Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree.

Makini Thompson returns to Chowan for her second season at the

helm of the volleyball program. Thompson comes to Chowan with a

diverse playing and coaching background. Thompson will serve as the

program's third head coach since transitioning to NCAA DII status in

2006. In her first year as head coach, Thompson guided the Hawks to a

CIAA Northern Division Championship, and runner-up finish in the

CIAA Tournament. She coached Cindy Ehrich to earn CIAA Rookie of

the Year honors, and First Team All-CIAA selections Callie Armistead

and Karina Monroe.

Thompson has a diverse playing and coaching background, which in-

cludes international and professional play. A 6-0 outside hitter, Thomp-

son enjoyed three superb seasons at Florida State from 2005-2007. In

2006, she became the first Florida State player to earn All-AVCA hon-

ors as a junior when she collected an honorable mention nod.

Thompson recorded more than 1,200 kills during her three-year stint

with the Seminoles, the 21st player in school history to reach 1,000. For

her efforts, Thompson collected a First Team All-ACC award in 2006,

as well as a Second Team All-ACC selection as a senior in 2007.

In 2008, Thompson played professionally for Langenthal VBC in Swit-

zerland. She is also a member of the Jamaican Senior National team and

competed in the Caribbean Championships in Suriname, where she

helped the Jamaicans take fifth place two years ago.

During the 2010 season, Thompson served as a co-coach of Smash 18,

the top-ranked club team in New England. Smash won the Great

Nor'Easter and Mizuno Winterfest Tournaments and represented New

England at the USAV Nationals in Reno. She also has club experience

with the North Florida Volleyball Academy (2005-2008).

Following graduation from Florida State University in 2008, Thompson

served three seasons as the head volleyball coach for Robert F. Monroe

High School. She accumulated a 49-28 record while at RFM High

School. She also served as the Coordinator for Communities in

Schools, Inc. where she helped foster at-risk youth in the community.

In 2011, Thompson served as a volunteer assistant coach at Virginia

Commonwealth University. She worked with the outside hitters where

the team led the CAA in hitting percentage and blocking.

Thompson was selected to participate in the AVCA Minority Coaching

Program which was held at the 2011 AVCA Convention.

Thompson has had strong coaching influences over her volleyball career

but attributes her biggest influences to the Jamaican National Team

coaches.

Chowan University stands in the

old Albemarle region of North

Carolina between the Roanoke and

Chowan Rivers in the northeast corner

of the state. The Murfreesboro area

was first settled during the sixteenth

and seventeenth centuries, when the

principal inhabitants were several

Indian Tribes such as the Chowanokes.

Today, the stately old homes seem to

whisper of the storied colonial and

antebellum days.

Murfreesboro is located approximately

60 miles from Norfolk, Virginia and 120

miles from Raleigh, North Carolina.

Murfreesboro is the location of the

boyhood home of Dr. Walter Reed,

discoverer of the cure for yellow fever,

and home to Richard Jordan Gatling,

the inventor of the Gatling Gun. Tours

and special events are offered

throughout the year by local groups.
