The Saint Joseph’s field hockey team will have a bitof a new look this fall as a dozen new additions to theroster have head coach Michelle Finegan and hersquad primed for a charge to the top of the Atlantic 10.

“Our goal right now is to qualify for the Atlantic 10Championship,” said Finegan, now in her 17th seasonat the helm of the Saint Joseph’s program. “Fromthere, if we get into the tournament, our goal is to winthe championship.”

In order to achieve those goals, Finegan’s chargeswill have to navigate something of a new-look Atlantic10, as longtime local rival Temple departed the leagueand was replaced by new associate member SaintFrancis (Pa.). The Red Flash is the third new programto join the conference for field hockey in the past fourseasons, joining Lock Haven (2010) and VCU (2012).Davidson is set to bring the total field hockey member-ship to nine schools in 2014.

“I think, overall, having a larger number of teams isgood for the conference,” said Finegan. “It means thatif you make the Atlantic 10 Championship, you’ve beat-en some pretty tough teams, and it can allow theAtlantic 10 to qualify for an automatic bid to the NCAATournament.”

Competition will be fierce for the four postseasonberths, but Finegan believes the Hawks will be right inthe mix once conference play begins. Perennial leaguepowers Massachusetts and Richmond are expected tobe near the top of the conference once again, but withTemple’s departure, the competition for the remainingA-10 Championship bids will be wide open.

“There are probably four teams, including us, vyingfor those spots,” Finegan said. “The competition isgoing to be pretty wide open.”

Despite the new addition to the league and thenew additions to the roster, the SJU program has sta-bility on its coaching staff, as former All-AmericanJessica Javelet and former NCAA national championChelsea Cipriani return for their third and second sea-sons, respectively, on the sidelines at Ellen Ryan Field.

The staff will have a unique challenge this season, molding together a group of 10 freshmen and twotransfers and integrating them with the squad

“We have a fresh atmosphere and a good attitudearound the team,” Finegan said. “People are workingtogether and are very supportive of each other. I givethe upperclassmen a lot of credit; they’ve been veryencouraging and supportive of the incoming class.”

Two of those upperclassmen, Sara Kolobielski andShannon McNeill, will serve as the team’s captains thisseason. The lone seniors on the squad, Kolobielski andMcNeill will also be called on to lead the Hawks’ defen-sive efforts. Sophomore Eva Gekas returns this seasonas well; the trio combined to start every game for theHawks in 2012.

Joining them in the defensive backfield will besophomore back/midfielder Mia Tomkins and incom-ing freshmen Katja Hansen and Micky Saperstein.

Two newcomers will serve as the last line ofdefense this season as junior transfer Rachel Barnettand freshman Amelia Deibler will hold down the fort inthe cage for the Hawks. Barnett, who comes fromDublin City University in her native Dublin, Ireland, andDeibler, who also has experience as an ice hockeygoalie, are both expected to see significant time in goalfor Saint Joseph’s.

The Hawks will have a strong young core up themiddle, led by Nicole Gerdes, the squad’s second lead-ing scorer in 2012. Gerdes tallied five goals, good forsecond on the team, and a team-best five assists lastseason, and will be called upon to contribute on thescoreboard once again.

Joining Gerdes in the midfield will be junior CorieMcLaughlin, who missed last season but started fivegames as a freshman in 2011.

Captains Sara Kolobielski (left) and Shannon McNeill(right) are the lone seniors on this year’s squad. The pairwill lead the Hawk defense in 2013.

Freshmen Melanie Colozziand Nadia de Vries could crackthe starting lineup as well.Colozzi spent five years in theU.S. Futures Program and wasan All-State player last seasonat Governor Mifflin HighSchool, while de Vries is one oftwo Dutch imports that willsuit up for the Crimson andGray this season.

Juniors Lauren Brands, ToriPopinko, and Katie Walsh willprovide key depth to the mid-field corps, while freshmanEmily Nonnemacher is alsoexpected to see significant play-ing time in her first campaign.

Last season’s leading scor-er, junior Jordan Martin is backto help spearhead the Saint Joseph’s offense in 2013.Martin earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors asshe led the squad with seven goals and 16 points.

Sophomore Sarah Yerk played in all 19 games lastseason, making five starts, and should find herself inthe starting lineup this season. Freshman MarinVreeburg, another import from the Netherlands, isexpected to round out the starting frontline for SJU.

Claire McDugall, a sophomore transfer fromAmerican University, should be a contributor up top aswell, as should incoming freshmen Kristen Moisey,Julia Mustin, and Kerri Turk.

That lineup will face a good balance of competitionthis season, as the Hawks kick off the campaign with atrip to Virginia to face Liberty and Longwood on open-ing weekend. A road tilt at crosstown rival and CAApreseason favorite Drexel precedes a four-matchhomestand and a stretch where SJU plays seven ofeight games at Ellen Ryan Field. The Hawks will hostFairfield, Penn, Towson and Pacific before heading toQuinnipiac. Then it’s back home for Villanova, Rider, and Siena before Atlantic 10 play begins.

The Hawks will head across town to open up theconference slate at La Salle. After the non-conferencefinale at home against Cornell, Lock Haven returns to

Hawk Hill to continue what hasbecome a budding rivalry sincethe Eagles joined the league.

A visit to preseason favoriteMassachusetts follows beforethe Hawks close out the homeportion of the schedule withgames against Saint Louis andSaint Francis. SJU ends the regu-lar season back where it started,in Virginia, with games at VCUand Richmond.

The Atlantic 10 Field HockeyChampionship will be heldNovember 8 and 9 atMassachusetts’ Garber Field.

If the Hawks can come togeth-er early in the season andstrengthen their already-tightbond both on the field and off, it

should surprise no one to see them in the mix inAmherst come early November. And if the squad canmeet its own high expectations, there is no telling howhigh this young cast of Hawks can soar.

Jordan Martin led the Hawks in scoring lastseason and will once again be called upon toperform at the front of the SJU formation.

Nicole Gerdes led SJU in assists last season and ranked sec-ond on the team in total points. Her steady play in the mid-field will be key to the Hawks’ success in 2013.

Since returning in 2003 for her second stint as the head coach of the SaintJoseph's University field hockey team, Michelle Finegan has guided the Hawk pro-gram to new heights. Finegan’s return coincided with the program’s most success-ful stretch in 20 years, as Saint Joseph’s recorded five consecutive seasons withdouble-digit wins (2004-2008) for just the second time in its history.

In 2011, Finegan presided over the Hawks’ return to campus as the brand-new,state-of-the-art Ellen Ryan Field opened on September 24. The Hawks notchedtheir first win on the new pitch a few weeks later, toppling rival Villanova, 3-2 inovertime, on October 12.

A two-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, Finegan has notched more wins thanany coach in program history. Taken alone, either of her two stints at Saint Joseph’swould put her atop the all-time list; combined, Finegan has won nearly three timesas many games as her nearest competitor. She led the Hawks to the Atlantic 10Tournament in the first seven seasons after her return, including appearances inthe championship game in 2006 and 2007. She earned the 100th win of her careerin a 3-2 win over La Salle on October 19, 2003; exactly four years later, a 6-0 victo-ry over West Chester marked her 100th win on Hawk Hill.

Finegan returned to Hawk Hill after spending seven seasons as the head coachat Lehigh University. She previously guided the SJU program for six years, earningboth conference and regional Coach of theYear honors after leading the Hawks toboth the Atlantic 10 regular season andtournament titles in 1995.

One of the most respected names inthe game, Finegan built the SJU programinto one of the Mid-Atlantic's best duringher first stint as head coach. After spendingher first three years retooling the team, theHawks went 37-22-2 over her final threeseasons. She capped her run at SJU in 1995by leading the program to the best seasonin its history. That year, the Hawks wonboth the Atlantic 10 regular season andtournament titles on their way to a school-record 16 wins and a #17 national ranking

The Hawks called Finnesey Fieldhome for 24 seasons prior to

2008. Over the course of two-plusdecades, Saint Joseph’s won 125

games and notched a .559 winningpercentage on its home turf.

SJU ON FINNESEY FIELD

After spending three-plus seasonsplaying home games off-campus, theHawks returned to City Avenue in 2011when they opened up the brand newEllen Ryan Field on the Maguire Campus.

Named for the recently-retired for-mer assistant athletic director and sen-ior women’s adminstrator, Ryan Field isequipped with a top-of-the-line synthet-ic AstroTurf12 surface, state-of-the-artwater cannons, an irrigation drainagesystem, a mobile press box, and bleach-er seating for 200 fans.

Ryan, who retired from SaintJoseph’s in August of 2011, served in theathletic department for 37 years andwas the driving force behind the growthof the women’s athletics programs atSaint Joseph’s. She served as SJU’s firstwomen’s basketball coach and alsocoached the women’s tennis team for atime. Her vision and dedication are thefoundation upon which Ryan Field, andthe women’s athletics program at SaintJoseph’s, are built.

“When you think of women’s athlet-ics at SJU, the first name you think of is,and should be, Ellen Ryan,” said Directorof Athletics Don DiJulia. “We hope thatby putting her name on this field, theUniversity can honor her contributionsnow and forever.”

Saint Joseph’s spent the 2008through 2010 seasons playing predomi-nantly at Drexel’s Buckley Field. SJUamassed a 12-12 “home” record at thefacility during that stretch.

One of the most famous mascots in col-lege sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk hasbeen flapping its wings for 56 years.

The Hawk, which celebrated its goldenanniversary in 2005-06, is best known forstaying in constant motion by flapping itswings throughout every basketball gameand representing the Saint Joseph's motto,"The Hawk Will Never Die."

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams havebeen recognized with the nickname“Hawks” since 1929. At that time, theschool’s yearbook editor initiated a con-test among the student body for a sym-bol. More than 100 submissions werenarrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over“Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The namewas appropriate because it typified “thefighting spirit of our crimson and gray ath-letes and it is suggestive of the aerialattack which has made our football teamfamous.” Football, ironically, was discon-tinued at SJU following the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numer-ous accolades in its over 50-year history. Ithas been selected as the nation’s top mas-cot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated,Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’sBasketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketballmagazine and was nominated for theMascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what isnow the Atlantic 10 Conference was con-ceived. What started as an eight-school,men’s basketball-only affiliation has growninto a 13-university, 21-sport league that isuniversally hailed as one of the best confer-ences in the country.

That growth and prominence is adirect result of the ideals and commit-ments of the member institutions of theAtlantic 10 – The University of Dayton,Duquesne University, Fordham University,George Mason University, The GeorgeWashington University, La Salle University,University of Massachusetts, University ofRhode Island, University of Richmond, St.Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph'sUniversity, Saint Louis University andVirginia Commonwealth University. Theleague will add one more to its ranks in2014 when Davidson College becomes the14th institution to join the A-10.

In 2012-13, the Atlantic 10 continuedto be proactive in navigating sweeping con-ference realignment, adding GeorgeMason University for 2013 and DavidsonCollege in 2014. The additions follow a verysuccessful first year by VirginiaCommonwealth University, which beganfull membership on July 1, 2012. Theleague continues to draw national praisefor its decisions during conference realign-ment in selecting institutions driven by aca-demics and basketball. The league wasdeemed the “winner” of conferencerealignment in 2011-12. The three addi-tions were part of a five-year StrategicInitiative Plan that was adopted during the2010-11 academic year.

The 13 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by theirdiversity. Each is extraordinary in its edu-cational mission, whether of a Catholicfaith, a private university or a land grantinstitution. The varied pursuits of eachmember prove that there are manythreads that weave the fabric for a greatconference.

The Atlantic 10 Conference, with atotal population of over 82 million peoplewithin its geographic footprint of sevenstates and the District of Columbia, willcrown champions in 21 sports this year:baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, fieldhockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoortrack & field, women's rowing, men's andwomen's soccer, softball, men's andwomen's swimming & diving, men's andwomen's tennis, and women's volleyball.

The presidents and chancellors ofAtlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction withAtlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V.McGlade, have made a strong commitmentto making the academic and athleticsequation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to bet-ter recognize the academic accomplish-ments of its student-athletes. TheCommissioner's Honor Roll, which cites

every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a3.5 grade point average or better, recog-nized a record 3,255 student-athletes in2012-13.

The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports andhonors two student-athletes as the A-10Student-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduatescholarship grants to qualified student-athletes. In 2012-13, nearly 200 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conferencerecognition, while Saint Louis’ Alejandro(Alex) Aleman, Shane Basen of Charlotte,Nicole Cherok of Duquesne and SadieWonders from Dayton were namedPostgraduate Scholarship recipients. ThePostgraduate Scholarship program hasbeen so successful that the Atlantic 10’sDirectors of Athletics recently voted tomore than double the number of recipi-ents to 10 individuals and increase thevalue each recipient receives to $7,000.The program will expand beginning withthe 2014 honorees.

The Atlantic 10 Conference once againearned high marks in the latest AcademicProgress Rates (APR). This includes rankingfifth among all 32 Division I Conferenceswith a 984 average, 10 points above thenational average. The corporate title “S-a-i-n-t” Joseph’s University, which has been in place since Saint Joseph’s was granted university status by theCommonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1979, is now the public title of the institution for all aspects of its operations. Previously, the abbre-viation “St.” Joseph’s University was permitted in a number of alumni and athletic contexts.

The vast majority of academic and government publications have referred to Saint Joseph’s University since at least 1986, as havemost campus references with the exception of athletics. However, a university-wide “image campaign” has revealed the need to clari-fy this policy both internally and externally.

According to the most recent edition of the Higher Education Directory, there are at least nine recognized “St. Joseph’s” among thenation’s colleges and universities. Only one of them – Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia – is a university-level, Master’s I, NCAADivision I institution. A complete spelling of Saint Joseph’s University in all contexts will help eliminate any confusion among higher edu-cation and other public constituencies.

Style information for print, electronic and digital media is available. It includes accepted abbreviations of the corporate name (e.g.,“SJU” or “St. Joe’s” in headlines or certain informal references) as well as prohibited usages (e.g., partial abbreviations such as “St.Joseph’s” or “Saint Joe’s”).
