SEASON PREVIEW

2 Saint Joseph’s University

Returning its top four scorers and starting goalkeeper for the2010 season, Saint Joseph’s look to return to the Atlantic 10 post-season for the first time in five year. Coming within a victory of theconference tournament a year ago, SJU begins its quest with highexpectations.

"We are very excited for this years team. There is a lot moredepth on the squad than we have in the past and that will help usplaying two games in a weekend," said 10th year head coach JessReynolds.

While picked to finish 12th in the A-10, Saint Joseph's ispoised to prove voters wrong as it returns 15 letterwinners, including seven starters.

“We have nearly made the post season the past two years,”Reynolds said of her team’s predicted finish. “Obviously it was dis-appointing to see where the coaches picked us to finish, but wearen’t worried about that and are focused on our goals.”

Bolstering the Hawks' offense will be seniors Lauren Sawyerand Brooke Price, juniors Maggie Lupinski, Jen Pfeiffer andSandra Mackey and sophomore Ali Yozwiak.

An A-10 All-Conference Second Team selection last year,Sawyer recorded three game-winning goals and added a team-best three assists in her most efficient year on Hawk Hill.

Starting in a career-high 17 contests, Price will shift focus thisyear as she transitions from the midfield to forward position.

Despite missing four games due to injury, Lupinski tallied ateam-best six goals as a sophomore and led the team with 12points. The 2008 A-10 Rookie of the Year, Pfeiffer’s numbers weredown during her sophomore campaign, but still had a productiveyear that saw her score four goals and add an assist while beingmarked heavily by opposing defenses.

Coming off the bench for much of the year, Mackey andYozwiak add scoring touches and should press for starting time.Mackey is coming off playing in a career-high 19 games, whileYozwiak finished her rookie year fourth on the team in scoring(eight points) and goals (four).

“We have more options up top now than we have had in thepast,” Reynolds said. “There is a lot of talent and natural instinctsthat will automatically make our attack more dynamic.”

Between the pipes, sophomore Christine Neal earned All-Rookie Team honors after posting four shutouts and a 1.14 goals-against-average. With a full season under her belt, Neal is expect-ed to earn most of the starts, with rookie Lauren Jancuska chal-lenging for time.

“Christine has excellent confidence and adds great leadership, while Lauren brings steady play to the position,” Reynolds said.

On defense, SJU lost two starters, but will be led by talentedjunior Kayleigh Summers. Senior Kaitlyn Grimes brings experiencewith sophomore Taylor Mallory challenging for starting time.

“Kayleigh is a natural leader and ball winner,” said Reynolds.“Kaitlyn and Taylor all have experience and know what it takes tobe successful.”

In the midfield, senior Carly Salter and juniors Steph Lawall,Steph Maurer and Kelliann Rooney will look to push a faster-paced offense in 2010.

“The midfield will be a focal point for us as they will help holdour defense in order,” Reynolds said. “ Their style of play will allowus to have a more dynamic attack.”

The influx of 10 positional newcomers should give SJU thedepth and talent it has lacked in past years. The Hawks welcomeMorgan Duffy, Brianna Walsh, Nicole King, Devin Griffin, MoHawkins, Morgan Circe, Shannon Farrell, Courtney Paxson, EmilyIrons and Lindsey King to the squad with expectations high forthem and the team as a whole.

“The newcomers add a lot of talent to the team,” saidReynolds. “We’re expecting them to come in early and competefor starting spots and add much needed depth that we haven’thad in several years.”

Having fallen just short of its goals in past years, Saint Joseph'sis set to meet and exceed expectations in 2010.

"Our goal is to make it back to the Atlantic 10 tournament. Wehave just missed it the past two years and this year we feel we aregood enough to make it."Senior Lauren Sawyer earned A-10 All-Conference honors in 2009.

Junior Jen Pfeiffer is tied for sixth all-time in career goals with 13.

HEAD COACH

32010 Women’s Soccer

Jess Reynolds, the only coach in Saint Joseph’s program history to lead the Hawks to the Atlantic 10Tournament, returns for her 10th season at the helm of the women’s soccer squad. In nine seasons, Reynolds hasturned around a team that posted a single A-10 win in the year before she arrived, to a highly-competitive club thathas since made three postseason appearances, and came within a victory of the postseason in 2009.

Bringing in several highly-touted recruits and transfers in 2003, Reynolds led the Hawks to their first winningseason in four years. Saint Joseph’s went 9-8-1 overall and set a program record for Atlantic 10 wins with a 7-4-0record and qualified for its first A-10 Tournament. The seven-game improvement from 2002 to 2003 ranked amongthe best in the nation as Reynolds guided three players to All-Conference or All-Rookie recognition, including 2003A-10 Rookie of the Year Megan Schutt.

In 2004, Reynolds guided the Hawks to new heights as Saint Joseph’searned the team’s first postseason victory. Highlighted by a 1-0 win overLa Salle in the A-10 Championship Opening Round, the Hawks posted a 9-11-1 overall record and finished 6-4-1 in conference play.

Having graduated the Hawks’ top scorer and goalkeeper, Reynolds’coaching ability shined in 2006 as Saint Joseph’s fought into the finalweekend for a playoff spot. Despite falling shy of the program’s fourth-straight postseason appearance, Reynolds coached the Hawks to a sin-gle-season best 33 goals, while helping senior Ali Wean become thesquad’s first ever A-10 Offensive Player of the Year. Wean also becamethe second Hawk under Reynolds to earn A-10 First Team All-Conferencehonors, and the first SJU player to be named to SoccerBuzz.com’s Mid-Atlantic Third Team after scoring a single-season record 14 goals.

Compiling one of the toughest schedules in the region in 2007,Reynolds’ young club responded, going 3-4-1 at home and had a pair of

freshmen leading the way on offense.Boosted by the 17th-best ranked recruiting class by SoccerBuzz.com in 2008, Reynolds guided the Hawks

to the fifth most-improved record in the nation at 8-7-4. Additionally, Saint Joseph’s surpassed the previousrecord for consecutive victories, stringing together five straight in 2008. Individually, several Hawks postedcareer years, while freshman Jen Pfeiffer excelled under Reynolds’ guidance. Pfeiffer became just the secondSJU player - and second under Reynolds - to earn Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and All-Freshman Mid-Atlantic Team honors.

Last season, Reynolds pushed her team to the brink of a postseason berth as the Hawks remained in contention for the postseason heading intothe regular season finale. While SJU finished two points shy of its goal, the Hawks finished with a program-best 1.07 goals-against-average, with jun-ior Lauren Sawyer earning All-Conference honors and Christine Neal garnering All-Rookie accolades.

Away from the sidelines, Reynolds has also been instrumental in guiding the team’s previous trips to Brazil, Norway, California and Colorado thepast four seasons and has directed off-season camps to help raise money for the team, as well as local charities.

Prior to coming to Saint Joseph’s in August of 2001, she spent one year as head coach at West Chester University, where the Golden Rams com-piled a record of 10-9-1. In addition to her responsibilities of handling the soccer team, Reynolds also coordinated all aspects of West Chester’s exten-sive summer camp.

A four-year starter at Delaware, Reynolds earned her undergraduate degree in education in 1997 and is currently enrolled in Saint Joseph’s mas-ter’s in educational leadership program. Reynolds returned to her alma mater as an assistant coach in April of 1999 and also served as an assistantwomen’s soccer coach at Temple for one season. She presently serves as head coach of FC Delco Storm U-17 and assists with the FC Delco U-12 squad.

A native of Swarthmore, Pa., Reynolds played her high school soccer at Strath Haven. She currently resides in Philadelphia.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in con-

stant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the SaintJoseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”.

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. Atthat time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol.More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slimmargin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and grayathletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.”Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 50-year history. It has been select-ed as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids,Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee forthe 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame.

FINNESEY FIELD

52010 Women’s Soccer

Finnesey Field has beenhome to 10 different varsitysquads at Saint Joseph’sUniversity as it enters its 80thyear. Opened in 1929 as home tothe SJU football squad, the fieldhas undergone numerouschanges over the years and hasbeen home to over a thousandSJU varsity games, matches andtrack meets.

The most recent upgradehappened in the summer of 2008as the AstroTurf, laid down in2001, was replaced with new,state-of-the-art TigerTurf.

Additionally, the trackreceived a new coat of rubbermaterial in 2009 to better suit theathletes who use it for all sea-sons.

Home to the women’s andmen’s soccer teams as well as themen’s and women’s lacrosseteams, the field has seen othermodifications since its inceptionin 1929. The prospect of a 70,000-seat bowled stadium for foot-ball was dashed when the sport was discontinued following the1939 season.

Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Finnesey homeuntil 1959. In 1960, the original grandstand as well as the hillsideseating near Overbrook Avenue were eliminated as Villiger (nowPost) Hall and the Bluett Theatre were built. In the process of the1960 construction, the field’s elevation was raised five feet to itscurrent location.

In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Finnesey atrue multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights fur-thered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the

hill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to ahistoric stadium.

Saint Joseph’s women’s soccer was started in 1996 and playedevery season at Finnesey. The squad has compiled an overall 49-51-8 mark in 14 seasons at Hawk Hill.

The location has also been home to men’s soccer since 1958as the Saint Joseph’s men opened its playing grounds with a 6-0victory over Rutgers-South Jersey in October 24, 1958. Hawks’field hockey team wrapped up its last season on Finnesey in 2007.

Overall, the site has seen 1,120 games entering the 2010-11academic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 516-558-46 in 81 years.

Looking to make the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first timesince 2005, the Saint Joseph’s women’s soccer team entered theseason’s final game with a chance at ending its drought.Unfortunately for the Hawks, they would come up short of thatgoal, but capped a solid season that proved they could competewith the top squads in the conference.

Opening the season against Providence, Saint Joseph’s soph-omore Maggie Lupinski quickly proved to be a force on offense, tallying the Hawks’ lone goal in a 2-1 loss.

The Hawks got into the win column two days later as rookieAli Yozwiak tallied her first collegiate goal, while classmate KatKelble made one save for the shutout.

Lupinski’s scoring touch continued against Mount St. Mary’s,but the Hawks fell short in a 2-1 loss. Rookie goalkeeper ChristineNeal and her squad played to a 0-0 double-overtime draw atDelaware as the SJU defense limited the Fightin’ Blue Hens to justone shot on net.

An offensive outburst helped Saint Joseph’s back to .500 witha 5-2 win at Saint Peter’s. Lupinski registered her first career hattrick, while Lauren Sawyer and Emily Knesevitch each recorded agoal.

The Hawks went 1-1-1 in the final three games of the non-conference portion of their schedule. Following a 2-0 loss toTowson, SJU earned a 0-0 double-overtime tie against Penn, andLupinski lifted her team past Syracuse, 1-0.

Massachusetts handed the Hawks a 2-1 defeat in the A-10opener, but SJU bounced back with a dominant 4-0 victory overXavier. Sophomore Jen Pfeiffer struck twice, while Neal madethree saves to even the Hawks’ conference record.

Earning a point in a 1-1 tie with George Washington, SaintJoseph’s dropped a hard-fought 1-0 match at Richmond, butrebounded with a pair of victories over Duquesne and St.Bonaventure. Yozwiak recorded the game-winner in a 2-1 decisionover the Dukes, while Pfeiffer’s strike was all SJU needed in a 1-0win over the Bonnies.

Saint Joseph’s postseason chances were dealt two blows withone-goal losses at Fordham and La Salle, but the Hawks regroupedwith a 2-1 vicory over a talented Saint Louis club.

Controlling its destiny, SJU got an early goal from seniorTaylor Carr, but allowed three straight Charlotte goals, forcing theHawks to win their final game of the season against Temple andget help elsewhere.

Fighting valiantly to the final whistle, Saint Joseph’s couldn’trespond to an early second-half goal, as the Hawks’ season cameto a close with a 1-0 loss to the Owls.

While Saint Joseph’s fell short of the conference tournament, several Hawks had standout campaigns as Sawyer earned A-10 All-Conference Second Team honors and Neal garnered All-RookieTeam accolades.

Returning a majority of their starters, and playing with a fullyhealthy roster, the Hawks will build upon its successes in 2009 asthey strive to make a return to the A-10 Tournament in 2010.

One of just three Hawks to start every game in 2009, DanielleDeBernardo earned the team’s Player’s Player award.

THE JESUIT TRADITIONOF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognizedacademic reputation is confirmed by ongo-ing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S.News & World Report and Peterson’s. TheJesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry andpersonal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring fac-ulty. Graduate assistants do not teach, soundergraduates can be sure they arereceiving the very best educational experi-ence from trained experts. One-on-oneinteraction between students and facultyis a reality at Saint Joseph’s.

A solid liberal arts curriculum providesacross-the-board learning for every stu-dent. Supporting that curriculum are com-prehensive academic majors and learningfacilities. The result is a broad educationthat prepares students not only foremployment and graduate school, but forlife itself.

In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, whichhouses the Erivan K. Haub School ofBusiness, the Center for Food Marketingand the region's first "Teletorium" and"Moot Boardrooms." A HISTORY OF SERVICEThe students of Saint Joseph’s

University are dedicated to making today’sworld even better. A natural spirit of volun-teerism has enabled the University’s com-munity service programs to become themost popular extracurricular activities on

campus. In addition, a Service Learningprogram allows students to receive aca-demic credit for their work outside theclassroom.

SJU offers local, national and interna-tional opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.;from New Orleans to the AppalachianMountains, Saint Joseph’s studentsembrace the Jesuit mission of servingthose in need.
