PUBLIC ART TOUR

ARTS & CULTUREIt doesn’t matter if you enjoy being part of the audience or prefer the spotlight—there’s something for everybody in Greater Mankato. Our community is home to a long-standing community theatre, show-stopping performances at local universities and a wealth of drama and dance opportunities for children. Take a moment to explore one of Greater Mankato’s galleries or museums, visit an artist’s studio or check out work by local artists and artisans. One thing is certain—creativity is always around the corner.

If you love historical buildings and old architecture, be sure to tour the City Center, where many historical buildings—such as the First National Bank (Ellerbe Building), Graif Building, Lasalle and Martin buildings—still stand. An interesting point about the original site of First National Bank (1 Civic Center Plaza, F-5), which is now surrounded by the Verizon Wireless Center and is known as the Ellerbe Room, is that it was designed by the famous architect Thomas Ellerbe. Legend has it that the infamous robber Jesse James considered robbing the bank, but it was too busy. He went on to North eld, where he was later caught by police.

Mankato was inhabited by Dakota Sioux when Parsons K. Johnson and Henry Jackson staked claim to the city in 1852. Mankato was originally named “Mahkato,” meaning greenish-blue earth, by early inhabitants, but legend says it may have been accidentally changed due to a typographical error made by a clerk.

Mankato was settled at the con uence of the Minnesota and Blue Earth Rivers. The land was purchased in a treaty between the Dakota and the government. In 1862, the government broke this treaty, which led to the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. That con ict resulted in the largest mass execution in U.S. history, the site of which is commemoratedby the statue of the Buffalo at Reconciliation Park (100 E. Main Street, F-5).

2012 marked the 150th year since the US-Dakota War.

The Hubbard House (606 S. Broad Street, F-5) was built in 1871 and once described as one of the nest homes in Mankato. It had one of the rst phones, indoor plumbing, electricity and the most modern conveniences of the time. It is a perfect example of Victorian-style architecture. Tours are available. The gardens at the Hubbard House are open to the public and often used for photo sessions.

Historical ToursBetsy-Tacy – A step back in timeSitting quietly on top of Center Street Hill in Mankato, Minnesota, you’ll find the childhood home of Maud Hart Lovelace, beloved author of the Betsy-Tacy series of children’s books. As you are visiting the many significant Betsy-Tacy sites on this tour try to erase the view of modern advances and imagine a simpler time of the early 1900s when horses and buggies filled the streets. According to Maud Hart Lovelace, many of the characters in her books are based on real people. Their homes are located throughout the neighborhood Lovelace (Betsy) grew up in.

Maud Hart Lovelace wrote 13 Betsy-Tacy books from 1940 to 1955. These popular books were set in Mankato (Deep Valley) at the turn of the twentieth century and told the story of Lovelace (Betsy) and her best friend Frances 'Bick' Kenney (Tacy). Visitors from around the world have ventured through their preserved homes and around the sites they frequented. The homes are open to the public and offer a peak into life over 100 years ago. For information on tours, please contact the Betsy Tacy Society at 507.345.9777 or www.betsy-tacysociety.org. To find additional Maud Hart Lovelace artifacts, visit the Blue Earth County Historical Society. For business hours, you can reach them at 507.345.5566 or www.bechshistory.com

City Center History Walking TourThe History Walking Tour includes 25 historical sites in Mankato. The tour offers photos and brief descriptions of each site and a detailed map to help you find your way.

The US-Dakota Conflict of 1862 Self-Guided TourIt has been 151 years since the US - Dakota War. At least 450 white settlers and soldiers lost their lives along with many unrecorded Dakota causalities and forced removals. In 2013 we try to understand the events leading up to the conflict along with the grim outcome - the simultaneous hanging of 38 Dakota on December 26, 1862. It was the largest mass execution in US History. The US – Dakota War also was the largest attack on settlers in the history of the US. This Self-Guided tour brings you to 33 sites of the US-Dakota War. Each site offers a brief description of its significance.

Veterans Memorial TourHikers and bikers can honor the service of all veterans any day of the year by visiting the Greater Mankato area’s 14 memorial sites on the Trail for Heroes. This 12 mile scenic route winds through the two historic city centers and beautiful natural landscapes as it leads visitors to monuments that commemorate the sacrifices of veterans from the 1800s to the present day. The route uses public roads and trails that are easily accessible on foot and bike, and parking is available at most locations if you prefer to reach the sites by vehicle. Amenities along the way include parks with varieties of recreational opportunities, and businesses with shopping, dining and other services

Mountain BikingMount KatoBefore the snow flies and after it melts again, Mount Kato turns its attention to mountain biking. Slightly more than seven miles of mountain-bike trails are accessible during the non-winter months. The trails are open from sunrise to sunset. Call 507.625.3363 or visit www.mountkato.com for more information.

SnowbikingSnowbiking is gaining popularity in the biking world. Snowbikes or “fat bikes” typically have tires about four inches wide which allow for more flotation on packed snow trails. Snowbiking is best along packed snowmobile trails or frozen rivers and lakes. Always use caution when on frozen rivers and lakes.

BikingFor biking enthusiasts, Greater Mankato features some of the best trails in the state and scenic roadways with wide shoulders and little to moderate traffic. Our trail system offers a spectacular view of areas that may not always be explored, especially if you stick to the roads. Trail users will follow streams and cross upland and wetland areas, where one may see all kinds of wildlife. You never know what is around the next bend.

Come see why Mankato and North Mankato have been designated a "bronze" Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists, Washington, D.C.

Our popular Greater Mankato Bike Guide offers maps of the trails and paths around the community and suggested biking loops.

The rolling hills of the lush Minnesota River Valley sport many wonderful trails for walking, running, hiking, biking, in-line skating and more. Many of the local parks have pathways of their own as well. For a full listing of local parks and their amenities please visit our website visitgreatermankato.com under ‘Where to Play.’ Don’t forget about our other outdoor adventures like kayaking down one of the rivers in our river valley or downhill skiing this winter at Mount Kato.
