Jenny Pham“ACupofHope”Middle School DivisionCreekland Middle School PTALawrenceville, GA “Losinghope,anorphanembarksonajourneytoanewlifeandmeetsawomanwhoteacheshimthatthereisalwaysasilverlininginathundercloud.Thetheme,‘MagicofaMoment,’isproventhroughtheforeverchangedlivesoftheboyandwomanbecauseoftheirselflessactions.Thisstorywasinspiredbyeventsinmyhomecountry,Vietnam,andHowardKelly’smilkstory.ItrulyhopethatthisstoryinspiresotherstodokinddeedswithouteverexpectingarewardbecauseIknowthatthebestthingsinlifearenevergiven—theyareearned.”–Jenny Pham
A Cup of Heart Warming HopeTherewasnothingsopeculiaraboutNewYorkCityonabone-chilling,wintermorning.Likeasetofringingalarms,NewYorkCitywassetadriftubiquitouslyattheexactlyprescribedtime.Theenthusiasticstreetsellerswereseducingthepassingcrowdwithflashymerchandiseandthensome,whilethebustlingstreetswererowdywithimpatientbusinessmenandwomen,curious,quick-pacedtourists,andavidshopperswhowereallanxioustoarriveattheirdestinations,whetheritisthenextgrandsaleatthenearestmall,themajesticEmpireStateBuilding,orthedesolateofficesandcubiclesthatengulfitsprisonersinfatigueandboredom.Notsurprisingly,theear-deafeningnoisesmajorlyconsistedoffrustratedandhostileyellshurryingthecarstomove,withthecarbarkingbackanabruptbeep!asanoutragedresponse.Nowtotheeyeofthesimplebeholder,everythingintheBigApplewas,allinall,initsspecifiedpositionandcompletelynormal-butitabsolutelywasn’t. Becausenotmanypeoplehavetakenthelong,cobble-stonedpaththatmeandersbehindthethickshrubberyoftheparkaboutfourmilesfromthecityitself,theymightnothavediscoveredtheheaten-down,handwrittenadvertisementsignofalocalbakeryattheedgeofthebleakandsemi-erodedfountainthatneverseemedinthespirittospitoutanywater.Becausetheydonotseethesign,theymaynothavefollowedthealleywaybetweenthetwotowering,stoutbuildingsthatovershadowthestreetandtakenasharpleftto13Baker’sBoulevard.There,theywouldfmdthequaintestoffsetofbuildingstheyhaveeverwitnessedbutsmackedinthemiddle,wouldbethegrandprizewinner.Paintedperiwinklepurplewithvarious-colorpaintedcupcakesinsoftvanilla-whitepolkadots,thebakerywaspetite,crammedinbetweenbyanoddly-shapedbuildingoneachsideofitssquarestructure,andbehindalucidglasswindow,therewasatrayofjust-out-of-theovencupcakesandcustards.Ifyouwereluckyenoughtohavecomeatroughly8o’clockinthemorning,youwouldseeamid-agedbrunettedressedinadarkblue,over-washedtrenchcoatandaripped-up,pitch-blackscarfwalkintotheforestgreendoorofthebakery.Ifyoustoodtherelongenough,youwouldseeherwalkoutwithawoodenboxofsteaming-hotbreadeverysingledaydespitetheweatherconditions.Ifyoufollowedhertoseeifsheneededanyhelpontheway,youwouldbeledtoamelancholic,hauntedlookinghousewithasignhammeredintotherockygroundnexttoitsgravelroadthatweavesintothewoodenstairsoftheentrance,readingOrphanage.Theorphanageresembledacut-outVictorianhousefromanarchaic,black-and-whitephotograph. Itscreaky,ashenmahoganystairs,squeakinginexcitementeverytimesomeonewalkedintothehouse,ledtothewolf-grayfrontporchwhoseloftydoorhunghesitantlyonitshinges,almostabouttocollapsebecauseofthehouse’soldage.Theblood-redroseswereprotectedbehindblackgothictrelliseswhilerestingonthebrickbackgroundandsoaredtothesecondflooroftheorphanage,paralleltothetympanum.Outofallthebeautifulandoldcomponentsthatmadeupthisbuilding,therewassomethingelsemissing.Thistime,itwasnotjusttemporarily. Pit.Pat.Pit.Pat.Thegentlefootprintsonthesnowwerewindingthemselvesacrosstheemptystreetsthatexitedeastoftheorphanagewitheachstepgettingheavieranddiggingdeeperintotheground.Gaspinghuffsanddesperatepuffsescapedfromthemouthofablemishedboyofonlyabouttenyearsofage.Heran.Forthefirsttimeever,heran.Hesprintedlikethemajesticwinddancingthroughtheair,likeaglorioushorsegallopingintothehorizonoftheembracingeggyolk,andaboveall,likeafreechild.Theboywantedtodepartfromhismeekandcontrolledlifeintheorphanageandstartanewonewhereheheldthereinofhisownlife.Hehadtotakehisfateinhisownhands.Thisisjustthebeginning,hetoldhimself.]candothis.Hehadrememberedthosedaysofsittingontheinglenookbythefireplaceoftheupstairslibraryoftheorphanage,gazingsadlyoutofthewindowtotakeaglimpseofanewlyfonnedfamily,enviousoftheirapparenthappiness.Hestared,withinvisibleeyesofemeraldgreenbeneathhiswashed-out,grayorbs,atthesmilesandlaughterfromthem.Whycouldn’thebehappy?Lookingoutexcitedlyandeagerlyeverytimenewcouplescameinforanewrecruitfortheirfamilywithrejectionalwaysbeingthereply,theboysoonlosthope.Hislion-sizedheartwasshatteredandhisonce-believingsoulwascrushedtooblivion.Hefeltneglected,unloved,andworthlesseven.Itwasawhileuntilhesnappedoutofhisdepressingdazeandfmallyoptedtorenderuparoadmaptoanewlife.Thatwaswhenheplannedhisescape.(continued)
