SERVICE AND LOYOLA’S COLLEGE OF MUSIC AND FINE ARTSIn a famous address at Georgetown University in June of 1989, former Secretary General HansKolvenbach, S.J., stated that the Jesuits proclaim the service of faith through the promotion of justiceas their primary mission, and that it must be integrated as a priority into each Jesuit work. The purposeof Jesuit education is to form men and women “for others.” The Society of Jesus has always sought toimbue students with values that transcend the goals of money, fame, and success.

Loyola wants graduates who will be leaders concerned about society and the world in which they live, graduates who desire to eliminate hunger and conflict in the world and who are sensitive to the needfor more equitable distribution of the world’s goods, and graduates who seek to end all forms ofdiscrimination and who are eager to share their faith with others. In short, we want our graduates tobe leaders in-service. That has been the goal of Jesuit education since the sixteenth century. It remainsso today, and in our College of Music and Fine Arts, this zeal reveals itself in our daily effort to connectmeaningfully with the world around us and to reflect and transform it through our art. Whether it isthrough our wonderful music therapy students working in local hospitals and schools, our musiceducation graduates teaching throughout the region, our many alumni and current students who workas church musicians throughout the city, or through our summer art and theatre programs for youngpeople, Loyola continues its service to the community in many ways.

Loyola’s College of Music and Fine Arts welcomesyou to another exciting year of the MontageSeries. Music lovers will enjoy an encore visit bythe Irish singing trio The Priests; a concert by theVienna Boys Choir; a celebration of Wagner andVerdi, featuring acclaimed opera stars GreerGrimsley ’76 and Alfred Walker ’96; and the con-tinuation of the LPO Masterclass Series. JazzUnderground will include more performances atthe U.S. Mint, and the Loyola Jazz Festival will boastclarinetist Victor Goines ’84. Our Department ofTheatre Arts and Dance will present an ambitiousseason, including Patient A, a powerful drama aboutAIDS; Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice;Michael Tremblay’s Albertine in Five Times; and theSherlock Holmes mystery, Hound of the Baskervilles. As usual, our fall and spring ballet concerts will beseason highlights. Loyola’s Art and Design depart-ment will present lectures and exhibits by prominentartists, as well as our popular student exhibits.

Through community outreach, we bring ourstudents closer to the original intent of Jesuiteducation—to save souls through service to others. It is through the actions of our faculty, students, staff and friends that Ignatius of Loyola’s profoundvision comes to life, invigorated and lifted throughthe arts. Our college provides an opportunity todiscover a depth of thought that is transformativeand spiritually nourishing.

As I enter into my fifth year as dean, I am honoredby the dedication of our Visiting Committee, whichprovides support through generous gifts and guid-ance. Donors like these have helped us purchase anew Steinway piano, stage large-scale produc-tions, create student scholarships, and joined us inplanning new and expanded performance facili-ties. Without our donors, many of these thingssimply could not happen—please keep this inmind during your visits, and if possible, assist uswith a gift which matches your own capacity.

We welcome you to our campus and encourageyou to participate in the life of this wonderfulinstitution!

Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D.Dean, College of Music and Fine ArtsDavid P. Swanzy Distinguished Professor of Music

DEAR LOYOLA ALUMNI,PARENTS, AND FRIENDS,

Shearer and Gabour in a 2013 Music Industry Forum. CMFA students participate in a service learning project.

LOYOLA’S NEW ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCELoyola is proud to announce that Harry Shearer, voice of more than 20 characters on the The Simpsonsand bass player for the satirical rock group Spinal Tap, recently signed on as an artist-in-residence atthe College of Music and Fine Arts. We are thrilled to have Harry working with us— he is a brilliantartist and a great friend of New Orleans.

Harry will serve as a source of professional advice and guidance in filmmaking for Loyola students andwill offer workshops on writing, acting, and directing. Many students will gain hands-on experience asinterns and assistants for the legendary funnyman, who will use Loyola’s state-of-the-art recording andfilming studios for many of his own productions.

A frequent guest in Loyola professor Jim Gabour’s classes and the college’s Music Industry Forums,Harry tackles his new role with the same humor and energy for which he is renowned. “For a curmudgeonlike me, seeing all those bright, optimistic young people is impossibly depressing,” Harry said. “But sinceI had tried teaching early in my youth (and liked it), these meetings revived my nascent interest inpounding my view of the world into malleable young minds. The offer to be artist-in-residence at Loyolaallows me to pursue this mission with renewed vigor. And who knows? When one of them becomes amovie mogul, he or she may throw me a halfway-decent part.”

Harry made his first on-screen appearances in Abbott and Costello Go to Mars and The Robe in 1953 atage 7. In a career spanning more than 60 years since then, he has worked as a writer, producer, director, actor, radio host, author, and voice-over talent.
