Young blood How do we generate enthusiasm for boating and water sports?

Sarah Dhanda, senior federation director of the British Marine Federation, acknowledged the challenges in an excellent presentation at the UK Marina Conference in May: “We are keeping our core boaters but not retaining the casual ‘have-a-go’ boaters. The gap has closed between male and female interest but there is no growth and ‘time’ – above ‘cost’ – is the biggest reason given for lapse in boating activity,” she said.

“Age is a huge concern. The 54+ age group is increasing (possibly due to demographics) but there is no growth in the under-35 age bracket,” she added.

“Children are a major target market,” said dual Olympic gold medallist, Malcolm Page, and sport development director, Ross Kilborn, at the Marine13 conference in Sydney, Australia in April. The lifetime value of one child spending US$1,000 a year on sailing will give US$50,000 to a club over 50 years. A class of 20 children would therefore have a potential lifetime value of US$1 million...

A panel session, chaired by Mike Townshend of Dean & Reddyhoff Marinas at the UK Conference, specifically addressed the topic of attracting young people to boating. Gary Sutcliffe of LeeSan stressed the need to ‘make young people aware that boating is affordable’; Mick Bettesworth of MDL suggested that the UK should ‘take lessons from other European countries where they are very keen on getting youngsters interested in sailing at an early age,’; and Steve Arber of Tingdene Marinas noted ‘we can’t do much about price but we ought to add as much value as we can – and we should concentrate on a mix of social media.’

All panellists rated social media as an asset not to be overlooked, with Townshend describing Facebook as a great place ‘to capture compliments and really engage with your customers’. Sutcliffe noted that social media ‘had to be accepted as part of the marketing toolbox’ and Bettesworth described it as ‘pretty much the future.’ “Young people don’t ‘do’ email,” he said.

The vast majority of conference delegates freely admitted that they didn’t understand social media or, if they did, they didn’t have time to engage with it.

Time for a sea change? At Marine13 social media was described as ‘the bar, club or cocktail party of the online city’, and it’s a club greatly favoured by the young people who form such a worrying gap in boating demographics.

If you want them in your club, you should seriously consider joining theirs.

WOW factor in BournemouthUK: Over 100 delegates attended the 2013 Marina Conference, held in Bournemouth 8th-9th May.

Delegates welcomed a return visit from Derek Williams, whose ‘WOW’ concept for delivering great service made for lively discussion.

Further topics included inland versus coastal marinas; growing boating participation; working with marine police; climate change; and health and safety. Breakout sessions addressed: hiring top performers; legal challenges; marketing; and environmental best practice.

The UK Marina Conference is organised by the British Marine Federation, supported by the UK and Europe CMM Group and sponsored by Walcon Marine.

Expansion at ChathamUK: MDL’s Chatham Maritime Marina is now able to offer berth holders significantly more space, courtesy of 60 new marina berths. The marina now caters for 360 vessels up to 24m in length.

Tax change boosts charter fortunesSPAIN: The Ministry of Finance and Public Administrations, acting on a proposal made by the Ministry of Development, is to abolish the ‘registration tax’ (IEDMT) law for Spanish owned charter vessels of more than 15m in length.

The tax currently sits at 12% in addition to VAT. This seriously affects the competitiveness of charter firms and encourages them to relocate to other countries with a resulting loss to Spain during the summer season and for wintering.

Blue Haven opensTURKS & CAICOS: IGY Marinas has officially opened Blue Haven Resort & Marina on the leeward side of the island of Providenciales.

The project, which comprised installation of two main 4m wide piers, was completed by Walcon Marine using its System 21 pontoons. Piling was undertaken using a mobile rig.

The work forms part of the Chatham Maritime Project, in which MDL works in partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency and Chatham Maritime Trust to help regenerate the area.

The marina welcomes yachts up to 220 feet with a draft restriction of 8 feet (at mean low tide) and no beam restrictions.

Part of the Blue Haven Resort, the marina offers guests access to a wide selection of amenities including a condominium hotel with infinity pool, private beach and gym. Guests can also take advantage of a conference room with complimentary WiFi, showers, work stations, a volley ball and

horse shoe court, and resort and marina concierge services. Provo Golf Course, one of the leading courses in the Caribbean, is just minutes away.

Marinas International “thriving”USA: Recent reports that Marinas International, as it is commonly known, has filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 require clarification. Marinas International (MI) director of marketing, Shannon Funk, supplies the following information.

International Marina Group I, LP dba Marinas International is a professional marina management company that has been around since 1985. It has managed more than 40 different marinas to date and manages 29 marinas today. Of these 29, a group of 11 are owned by CNL Income Properties (a REIT based in Orlando, FL). The 11 properties are leased to three entities (Marinas International Consolidated, LP; Marinas International Consolidated II, LP; and Marinas International Consolidated II - Ouachita, LP). These three tenant entities – and not the management company Marinas International - filed for bankruptcy protection in June.

“Marinas International is very much a going concern and is thriving,” Funk confirms. “MI is continuing to professionally manage and operate all 29 marinas in its portfolio, including the 11 marinas involved in the filing. MI is working closely with the debtors (tenants) and creditors to come to a resolution quickly so as to minimise any impact to the members of the respective marinas during this peak time of year when our members need us most.”

Georges Cove proposalAUSTRALIA: Benedict Industries is seeking permission to build a AU$45 million marina at Georges Cove in Sydney’s greater west. The facility would be constructed on the company’s site at Moorebank, which has been rezoned for medium density residential, commercial and private open space development.

CHINA: Expected to be launched in 2014, Keppel Land China’s integrated marina lifestyle development in the Shenwan town of Zhongshan in Guangdong Province is targeted at upper income homebuyers. It will be a high-end marina resort and residential estate comprising over 1,600 low-density landed homes with private berths, high-rise apartments and a marina.Photo: Keppel Corporation Ltd.

If approved, the project will include a marina with 186 wet berths, 250 dry berths, a function centre, kiosk, and recreational and club facilities.

Benedict Industries managing director, Ernest Dupere, said the development would boost local tourism and lead to an increase in property values within the immediate area. “It will provide a

place where people can store their boats, rent boats and also allow boating enthusiasts from outside the local area to visit the Georges River waterways,” he said. It will also offer fuel, supplies and a range of on-water restaurants and cafés.

If the council approves the plans, construction is estimated to take 18 months to complete.

Burnett Heads redesign approvedAUSTRALIA: Bundaberg Regional Council has approved a significant upgrade to Burnett Heads Marina, Bundaberg, Queensland.

Giant marina for VaraderoCUBA: According to local media reports, construction is under way to expand Marina Gaviota Varadero on the tip of Hicacos peninsula into potentially the biggest marina in the Caribbean.

Ultimate plans are for 1,300 berths and six megayacht berths, residential properties, golf courses and hotels. A hotel in the Spanish Melia chain is near completion. Phase one of the expansion features 400 berths.

Michael Wieser, Chief Operating Officer at Island Hideaway, sees the partnership with the Dubai-based marina management company as mutually beneficial. “It will offer a new upscale destination for yachtsmen and

will increase our brand recognition in the Middle East and Asia in general,” he said.

Island Hideaway, built by Walcon Marine, is the only fully-equipped modern marina in the Maldives.

The new marina precinct will include 273 berths, a café and restaurant, commercial and retail areas, car parking and berth holder facilities including a lounge, gym, laundry and bathroom.

Councillor Ross Sommerfeld spoke positively about the proposal. “This would represent a major development for the port of Bundaberg which has

been recognised as one of the most accessible ports on the Queensland coast below the reef.”

He said the Burnett Heads area was the perfect location for a state of the art facility.

“There is an existing marina facility but this is going to make a major difference to that. I am hopeful it will kick-start development for the region.”

Seeking bigger boats and a year-round marketA mountainous island of wild beauty, Corsica has a Franco-Italian heritage and a tentative tourist industry. In recent years, greater focus has been placed on nautical tourism. Donatella Zucca reports

MARKET UPDATE: CORSICA

Although the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean with 1200km of coastline, Corsica has rugged scenery – just 300km of beaches and massive mountain ranges covered with coniferous forest. Over 42% of the population lives in the port cities of Ajaccio and Bastia leaving much of the hinterland and coast sparsely inhabited. Secluded bays in areas like Lavezzi

and Cavallo islands offer much-coveted summer moorings.

So-called tourist ports have been the focal point of efforts to promote tourism. The Union des Port de Plaisance de la Corse (UPPC), comprising 19 ports with around 6,500 berths, has played a leading role in promotion by developing a specific plan. The first step was to create a network of ports via an

Internet portal and a central booking facility. This was followed by creation of the first European cultural-maritime itinerary, ‘Odyssea’; a project launched in 2007 by the Federation Francaise des Port de Plaisance (FFPP) and Euromarina, and involving France, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Malta, Tunisia and Turkey.

The itinerary adopts nautical, cultural, natural and gastronomic themes, and ports are distinguished for one or more of these attributes. Some, such as Solenzara, Bonifacio, Port Charles Ornano at Ajaccio, Port de Calvi, Saint-Florent and Macinaggio are noted for all.

The first breakthrough for nautical tourism came in 2005 when the Assemblée de Corse established a development plan for tourist ports and in 2010 the Cap Nautic, a measure of yachting excellence, launched European and cross-border co-operations via Innautic. In 2012, Ajaccio played host to the first Euro-Mediterranean Tourism Meeting, aimed at improving competitiveness in Corsica, Liguria, Sardinia and Tuscany.

Saint-Florent Marina on the north west coast is a highlight in the Odyssea Itinerary.

Page 13: 2013 July August Marina World

www.marinaworld.com - July/August 2013 13

A budget of €6 million was made available, €1.7 million of which went to Corsica.

Supported by ATC (the agency for tourism), ADEC (the agency for economic development), the Corsican Environmental Agency and other institutions, UPPC was able to develop new management systems, expand and upgrade ports, co-operate better in the Mediterranean market and create a ‘Grand Plaisance’ division to focus on maxi-yachts. The goal was to use nautical tourism as a driving force for boosting the economy while maintaining maximum respect for the environment, and to ‘de-seasonalise’ the yachting sector.

However, visiting boats still tend to stay on the island for just a few weeks. Around 50% come from overseas – especially Italy – despite the fact that numbers have fallen since 2012. The 2007 agreement between UPPC and the Rete dei Porti Della Sardegna network (Sardinia) still results in too short a season.

The Corsica planThe so-called Plan Nautique la Corse, in which UPPC is the major player, involves regional, national and European input even in terms of funding (the 2009/11 forecast was for over €1.35 million) and the results are noteworthy:

• Marine structures have been refurbished in the port of Propiano, the water plan has been modified and a careenage area and road created.

• Work at Bonifacio was even

more challenging. In addition to refurbishment of the main pier, the maxi-yacht dock near the yacht club was extended to 100m and various historic buildings were modified for different use. Video surveillance services, Wi-Fi, organised waste management and improved road networks were actioned.

• Porto Tino Rossi in Ajaccio benefited from the Grand Plaisance project to enable it to accommodate 20 yachts up to 40m in length also during the winter months. Ingemar was involved in replacing existing infrastructure with galvanised steel king size jetties that are more suitable for maxi-yacht mooring.

• Porto Vecchio has emerged as one of the most environmentally advanced marinas in France due to an innovative vacuum, filtering and water cleaning system.

Various Corsican ports are also being improved courtesy of companies such as Corse Travaux Maritimes. There is little standardisation and the supply of services varies; sometimes missing a travel lift, sometimes a crane, for example. The Wi-Fi coverage is, however, fairly reliable and often free. Ensuring that every facility maintains its own individual identity is a deliberate policy, as UPPC president, Jean Thomas, explains: “The idea is to boost local social development. We do not want everyone to offer the same services and ports must retain their own identity. We build on the environment, local culture and art de vivre within each area but avoid creating resorts. We want to enhance the existing relationship of each port with the sea.”

In addition to the network of marinas and 14 fishing/pleasure ports, there are 26 mooring fields with buoys and anchors. Some of these are part of the UPPC and ResaPortCorse central booking scheme and others within the Odyssea itinerary.

“The ports are now in one central booking network and Italian ports, such as those within the Rete dei Porti della Sardegna network, are also with us,” Thomas confirms. “Unfortunately, in 2012 Italian visitor numbers fell by about 50%. Many Italians no longer keep a boat here.”

Another misfortune, in terms of continued marina development, is geographical. The tendency for boaters to moor up, either in designated mooring spots or elsewhere is prevalent. “There are many organised mooring fields that are used during the summer when the weather is good but, in most cases, boaters drop anchor where they want to – often in secluded coves,” Thomas notes. “This is one of our greatest problems. In Corsica this is difficult to control and could cause damage to the environment. I never tire of saying that creating more ports and extending existing facilities will give us the chance to demand a greater respect for nature.”

Ongoing developmentsThe marina sector nonetheless continues to inch forward, as UPPC director, David Donnini, outlines: “Currently, work is concentrated mostly on dams, careenage and the clean ports operation. At Propriano, Solenzara, Tino Rossi, Macinaggio, Calvi and Porto Vecchio, we are committed to efficient collection of boat wash and storm water, and in all our ports we have undertaken work to reduce negative environmental impact and to control water consumption.

Corsica and SardiniaSharpening the competitionAlthough both Corsica and its ‘rival’ island Sardinia operate within the Sardinian port networks, Corsica – as a French island – has a major advantage with lower French VAT. As such, it is more appealing to investors.

Marinas in Corsica, defined under French law as offering ‘tourist accommodation’, are subject to 11% VAT. In Sardinia, the VAT rate was 20%, is currently 21%, and could well rise further.

On 6th June a proposal was filed at regional level in Italy to lower Sardinia’s tax burden to 10% (initially) and ultimately 11% and thus establish a level playing field for the co-operation.

In a further boost for tourism in Sardinia, Tirrenia Shipping Company has signed an agreement with Rete dei Porti della Sardegna to offer discounts of up to 30% on all Sardinia routes during the summer months. A similar agreement is being finalised with Meridiana airline for the remainder of 2013.

As in the rest of France, we carefully monitor water and energy consumption. In ports, the use of water must often take place at predefined hours. This is also why we want to increase the use of prepaid cards, something that few ports aside from Porto Vecchio have adopted. Unfortunately, no specific systems are linked to control of water consumption and most customers pay a flat rate that varies depending on the port, size of boat, the season, drought restrictions, duration of stay and local municipality regulations.”

Focus also continues to build for maxi-yacht berthing, and second phase works in Bonifacio via the Grand Plaisance scheme are due to complete by early summer. “We are also organising ongoing works in various ports to improve reception facilities for maxi-yachts,” Donnini confirms. “Our development policies are aimed at meeting the needs of large yacht owners and minimising any associated environmental impact.”

“Although we have many Spanish, Italian and French customers with medium sized boats, via UPPC Grand Plaisance we are focusing on larger vessels and intend to create better conditions for wintering maxi-yachts. Owners of maxi-yachts have already asked to stay and have contacted us from other parts of the Mediterranean.”

BOAT HANDLING & YARD EQUIPMENT

OK trailer custom built for ‘tricky’ rampA custom designed fixed gooseneck trailer, large enough to handle Oklahoma City’s passenger ferry boats, has been delivered by US marine transport systems specialist, Hostar. The trailer will be used by Central Oklahoma Transportation and Parking Authority (COTPA) to haul out and launch the boats for annual maintenance and inspection.

Hostar is well versed in designing machines to suit specific boat ramps at marinas and yards and, in this instance, it tackled the task twice over by setting aside its first design bid when the operator decided to designate a different ramp for the trailer.

The new choice ramp posed some safety concerns due to its length and water depth access leading Hostar to modify the trailer suspension to allow for more lift; ensure that water levels could be adjusted by opening dams when needed; and adding a bow eye to each ferry to enable the trailer to haul vessels aboard using an 18,500 lb winch.

As each ferry measures 65ft long x 14ft beam, the trailer was lengthened from its initial 54ft to 57ft and has overall width of 10ft.

Oklahoma River Cruises provides access to historic Stockyards City, the bustling Meridian Corridor and the Regatta Park/Boathouse District. A purpose-designed shed is currently under construction to house the new trailer, which was delivered in May.

High spec boat scaffoldingUS manufacturer Scaffoldmart has further improved its specialist boat scaffolding to offer a low cost standardised solution for yards handling all kinds of boats.

Free standing and requiring no cross braces for easy set-up, the scaffolding provides an unimpeded work area along the entire length of the boat and can be contoured to suit the curvature of the vessel. A lever arm can be used to easily adjust the standing height.

The platform width has recently been increased from two boards to three, providing ample space for two people to pass each other on the platform. The overall design has also been modified to form a two-piece rather than one-piece arrangement for ease of assembly and storage. The base has been strengthened in specific areas so as to eliminate the bracing between the base and vertical tube that was a feature of earlier models. This allows for passage underneath and a far lower minimum height.

A range of accessories is also offered, including a special shelf bracket. This is attached at waist height on the back of the unit and joined by planks to create a shelf. Level jacks and a wheel kit for additional ease of movement are also available.

Rigidity has been enhanced by introduction of 20mm tightening nuts that lock the L-bracket into place and eliminate shaking. Older scaffolding models don’t take plank overlap into account when a working platform

is being created so the height of the end tab on the revised scaffolding has been doubled to 3 inches to secure two overlapping boards. The base size has also been increased to double the ‘industry standard’; legs have been lengthened for a 4:1 OSHA stability factor; and the vertical beam has been elongated to increase the L-bracket overlap and thus improve overall safety.

Studs are incorporated on the back of the working platform for a scaffold safety rail and end safety bars are now optional.

In addition to updated boat scaffolding, Scaffoldmart also manufactures a range of heavy-duty boat stands and hurricane cradles, which will be reviewed in the September/October issue of Marina World.

Boat scaffolding is priced at US$259.

Stylish solution for Limassol MarinaA stylishly co-ordinated marine hoist and trailer will enable Limassol Marina in Cyprus to become the first marina on the island to offer integrated boat services. The IDRA 100 ton capacity hoist and 40 ton capacity boat trailer were designed, built and delivered by Italian company PDN Engineering and, together, represent one of several orders that boosted the company’s marine division in 2012.

The ability to safely handle and move vessels is paramount, and the PDN hoist has all-wheel 90° steering and four mobile trolleys for this purpose. All steering, winches and load weighing is electronically controlled. The remote-controlled trailer also has all-wheel steering and is equipped with fixed and telescopic supports so that it can safely handle sailing boats. Both machines have Perkins diesel engines, which can be easily maintained.

In addition to the Limassol contract, PDN has also recently delivered a 180 ton capacity hoist to a marina in the port of Xufre in Isla Arousa, Galicia (Spain). In early 2013 it also secured orders for a 50-ton straddle carrier for Element AG in Tafers, Switzerland and a 30 ton IDRA hoist for the port of Le Havre, France.

Most recent success is partly due to well thought out plans to develop products, which were devised in 2004 when Luca Strata founded PDN, to suit both marine and civil fields. When Italo Focherini joined the company in 2008, he focused further on technical and commercial developments to ensure that PDN could offer customised as well as standard solutions.

In the marine sector, the company offers hoists with 30 to 1,000 ton capacity and trailers with standard capacity of 20 to 400 tons.

Motorists traversing the 936m long Fehmarn Sound Bridge to the German island of Fehmarn in the Baltic Sea cannot fail to notice a striking new landmark; a giant crane installed at the Josef Martin Boatyard.

Designed, manufactured and delivered by Vetter Krantechnik, the ‘Boss’ slewing crane has a 24 tonne lift capacity and adjustable outreach from 2.8 to 6.5m. This special feature comes courtesy of a twin jib supporting a moving two-rail trolley.

A slewing gear with lifting beam that accommodates electric wire rope hoists is mounted on the trolley, and the rope hoists support the boat lifting beam. The operator is thus able to move the suspended boat horizontally as well as vertically to position it precisely on a

trailer. A load indicator keeps a check on weight during the lifting operation.

Slewing speed can be continuously adjusted for fine tuned movements or for a quick 180° slewing operation. The slewing range extends to 320°.

Vessel width has also been taken into account. The lifting beam carrying the boats has been fitted with two adjustable crossbeams for easy width adjustment (from 2.4 to 4.0m) by means of two trolleys at the lifting beam. Several load fastening points have also been provided at the cross beams to give an

extensive range of settings for width and length of vessel.

Location, location, location...According to Dutch company, Roodberg, many marina related boatyards around the world continue to lose revenue by not making best use of available yard space.

Greater efficiency at Nielsen BeaumontCalifornia-based Nielsen Beaumont Marine is one of many operators to order a Marine Travelift (MT) 75 BFM11 mobile boat hoist in order to boost yard efficiency.

Despite investing in quality lifting and boat moving equipment and offering a good range of services, operators often miss out because they are not storing vessels as efficiently as possible or are tying up prime space with activities that could be conducted equally well at greater distance from ramps or lifting docks.

The Roodberg solution is a towed Boatparker, an arrangement that enables a marina to store up to 35% more boats than is possible when using just a mobile hoist. One of the first marinas to invest in the machine, Jolly Harbour Marina in Antigua, has significantly boosted income by compact yacht storage. The manoeuvrability of the Boatparker and its slender profile enable Jolly Harbour to offer more customers safe, secure landside storage and this also frees up

promptly,” Hof continues, adding that there are environmental benefits too in keeping a wash-down area in a designated place.

Contact Roodberg in the Netherlands on email: [email protected]

In Nielsen Beaumont’s case investing in the new machine formed a core part of plans to remodel the San Diego boatyard and ensure all operations were environmentally friendly.

Details were important for co-owner Tom Nielsen when selecting a machine. One of the most significant features in the MT hoist was the wireless remote with mechanical back-up. “With so many other machines, if the transmitter gets damaged or if the battery goes down and you lose electrical power, you’ll lose the whole machine,” he explained. “With a Marine Travelift you can operate the machine mechanically from the cab so there’s no downtime. Our operation won’t come to a standstill, which would be terrible for our customers and our employees.”

He also appreciated that the hoist’s design incorporates separate pumps for each winch as “back-ups are really important.”

The 75 BFM11’s environmentally friendly features also helped to clinch the deal: it has a zinc coating under its top coat to help prevent corrosion; has a sound shield to address noise pollution; boasts a biodiesel Tier 3 engine to meet California’s rigorous clean air standards; and makes use of mineral oil for hydraulic pumps and winches.

“Marine Travelift helped us get that hydraulic fluid, which is biodegradable and eco-friendly,” Nielsen confirmed. “It’s far more biodegradable than oil, and here in San Diego if you spill even a drop of regular oil the US Coast Guard wants to be notified.”

The new hoist also increases overall efficiency as it replaces an antiquated rail system for hauling and launching vessels. “It was so old, we didn’t push it anymore,” Nielsen said. “We limited it to 50 tons, which limited our entire business. Now, with the MT 75, we’ve

been able to increase our maximum length and weight for haulage...and we’ve also been able to increase our square footage of boats by a factor of four or five.”

The total renovation project and introduction of a modern hoist has transformed Nielsen Beaumont into an impressive zero-discharge facility and made it one of the most efficient and environmentally advanced boatyards in the USA.Contact Marine Travelift in WI, USA on email: [email protected]

wet berths for visitors and owners who prefer to have their boats afloat. Efficient use of yard space is particularly important at a facility within the hurricane belt to ensure that as many boats as possible can be lifted and stored.

Storing boats properly is one important economic factor; better utilising all space is another. “Wash-down areas can still be found located in front of the lifting dock,” says Roodberg’s Bas Hof. “This means that whenever a boat is lifted, all activity stops until the hull is clean. Waiting, waiting, waiting – all at unnecessary cost to the boat owner.”

“Cleverer solutions locate the lifting bay, wash-down area and service facilities in different places. The logistics are then much faster, much more flexible and clients can be assisted

Family addition at Keystone PointIn the 1950s a local developer wanted a place to dock his boat. He purchased two acres in North Miami and built 35 slips and a small building to serve as an office. He retired his boat captain and made him the dockmaster of Keystone Point Marina. When he was ready to retire, he sold the marina to local businessman Ed Hamilton of Active Development Co.

difference. “Many marinas paint their forklift equipment to blend with the property colours - we’ve decided to take it a step further with custom-designed artwork by marine industry artist Hugo Cardonne,” she announced. “Since Miami is known for its international art reputation we decided that we could make our brand new forklift a ‘work-of-art.’ Who knows, maybe next year you’ll see our custom-designed forklift at Art Basel,” she quipped. Named ‘Bull’, the machine is wrapped with artwork depicting a bull dolphin.

“The engineers at Wiggins Lift Company have designed a powerful piece of equipment that fits our customer’s boat type, with some room to grow our larger boat owner customer-base. We are excited that the hard work over the past year has paid off and now we are having some fun with the process of taking delivery.”

Trish Hamilton summed up: “Lately, when I look at 18 year old girls I wonder how I did what I did back then. They look so young. I guess that’s how I looked. I was one month into 18 when Dad died unexpectedly. I was legal. And it was my decision to run this place myself. Almost 27 years ago, I can still say with confidence that I made the right decision. I was so determined to succeed. And even though Dad wasn’t around anymore, I knew he would have been proud.”

Mike Wiggins, president of Wiggins Lift Co., concurs: “I have known Trish from the early ’90s and have seen the years of hard work she has put into making Keystone Point Marina the success it is today. I know the late Ed Hamilton would be very proud.”

In 1968, Hamilton bought three additional acres to the east of the existing marina and in June of 1969 began construction on a 30,000 sq ft boat storage building. This building would ultimately house 228 boats under 28 feet long and was complemented by a full service boatyard and alongside dockage.

During the 1980s Ed Hamilton died unexpectedly. His daughter Patricia (Trish) who had just turned 18 stepped up and took on the job of running the marina. Trish Hamilton, “determined

to succeed”, continued to grow and improve the marina.

Over the years, as boat manufacturers began to build larger and faster boats, Keystone Point Marina kept pace by adding larger capacity boat racks and buying higher capacity boat handling equipment. This prompted the demolition of the enclosed boat storage building and erection of new outdoor racks in 2006. The drystack capacity was reduced from 450 boats to 350 larger boats and up to 65 boats could be docked in the water at the bulkhead and the finger piers.

Hamilton bought her first Wiggins Marina Bull in 1995 to handle her larger boats. She named it ‘Eagle’. In 1999 another Bull came along and she called it ‘Phantom’. In 2002 she brought in number three, ‘Pirate’, to safely handle even larger boats. Her drivers pick the name for the lift they operate and Hamilton says they take care of the equipment like it was their own. “Naming them is an easy way to tell the kids apart,” she says.

In February this year at the Miami International Boat Show Trish Hamilton formally took delivery of a brand new Marina Bull – with an aesthetic

NY marina buys ‘updated’ trailerA new Conolift 60 ton capacity self-propelled hydraulic boat trailer (below right) has been put to work at Winter Harbor in Brewerton, New York.

Fifth boat stacker soldItalian manufacturer, Ascom, has sold its fifth boat stacker; a cost-effective machine for drystack use that has so far attracted customers in France, Italy, Spain and Turkey. Featuring negative lift, the unit is able to retrieve vessels directly from the water, lift, transport and stack them on different levels on a boat rack system.

The company’s trailer division, ABI Trailers, has also contributed to boatyard efficiency with delivery of a special self-propelled 40 tonne boat mover. The machine, which is adjustable in terms of both width and length via hydraulics, is able to handle boats ranging from around

39 to 70 feet. If needed, an additional 30 tonne module can be quickly connected in order to boost capacity to 70 tonnes and handle vessels up to 85 feet. Such versatility enables the operator to utilise yard space to the maximum.Contact Ascom in Italy on email: [email protected]

The machine, built and delivered by Canadian company Kropf Industrial, is in use to safely and efficiently transport vessels from an existing hoist to a storage building. The trailer is able to position boats in close proximity on storage stands without the use of additional equipment.

Featuring an updated open-end design to minimise overall length without sacrificing stability, it offers good manoeuvrability and minimal footprint. The frame expands in width to allow transportation of a wide

range of vessel types and sizes and has a lift of 65 inches. The trailer has 180° steering and a full radio remote control package with microprocessors and digital read-outs for reliable and consistent operation.

In addition to hydraulic trailers, Kropf manufactures a variety of key ingredients for marina and yard infrastructure, including marine lifts, boat storage stands, floating docks and breakwater systems.Contact Kropf Industrial in ON, Canada on email: [email protected]

Nordic lift in full operationNordic Yachts OY of Helsinki, Finland, put a 25 ton capacity Sublift into service in May. Working alongside other equipment, the hoist has been in full operation since installation.

Powered, as standard, by Kubota diesel engines and with radio remote control, the Sublift also features hydraulic arm adjustment and electric sling locks for easy one-man operation.

With adjustable width for maximum flexibility and no top beam to interfere with

the mast or forestay on sailing vessels, it is ideal not only for day-to-day handling operations but for use by Nordic Yachts at the Helsinki Fair.

Malaysian marina welcomes Aseanarean sailorsA refreshing distance from the hustle and bustle of cosmopolitan city Kuala Lumpur, Admiral Marina lies on the south west coast of Malaysia. Marina World assistant editor, Charlotte Niemiec, paid a visit to ask marina manager, Prakash Reddy, to talk shop.

Admiral Marina is one of the 12 marinas that form the Aseanarean Bluewater Alliance, launched last September to promote cruising in the region. The alliance encompasses

Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The Aseanarean region is home to some of the world’s most diverse marine life and, with thousands of islands to choose from and warm weather all year round, the region has enormous potential as a cruising hot-spot. However, the area has a distinct lack of marinas. Prakash Reddy explains that the government of Malaysia has tried to exploit the area’s potential by building more marinas but, in some part due to location problems, they have not always been successful.

Reddy’s journey to marina manager began while studying engineering in Singapore. “One of my teachers persuaded me to try dinghy sailing, so that’s how I started. I was sponsored for

my instructor course and boat licensing. After I graduated, I still wanted to sail, so I applied to a Chinese sailing club in Singapore. Straight away, I got a job and for two years looked after activities such as instructor courses and racing at the marina. Then Raffles Marina in Singapore asked if I was available and I worked there for four and a half years. It was a lot of fun.”

While Admiral Marina is smaller than Raffles, Reddy explains that he wanted a different environment and a new challenge. He completed the Intermediate Marina Management course with the Marina Industries Association of Australia (MIAA) – now Marina Industries Association (MIA) – last year and took on the role of marina manager at Admiral in November.

Resort focusThe marina was built in 1994 as a hotel and marina resort by Pacific Marinas of Queensland, Australia, a company later bought by Bellingham Marine. John Clark Associates of the UK was appointed the concept architect, and land reclamation was carried out by a Dutch company within four months. The project cost a total of RM200 million (US$64 million). Primarily a club marina with over 500 members, it offers visitor berthing as required at a current rate of one visitor per day. The average length boat is 60-80 ft. Strategically located, it is a good base to explore Kuala Lumpur. The marina is a retreat, says Reddy: “It offers you peace and quiet while remaining close to popular destinations in Malaysia. If you want to go shopping, you can go to KL. You can go sightseeing in Malaka or sail to Pankhor Island around 140 miles away.”

TALKING SHOP

Admiral Marina has 100 berths for boats up to

superyacht size.

Modern facilities include a 3-star hotel, infinity pool and sporting and recreational areas.

Prakash Reddy: “Boats attract boats.”

Page 31: 2013 July August Marina World

www.marinaworld.com - July/August 2013 31

The marina is a popular stop off on the annual Darwin-Bali-Langkawi Yacht Rally, or for boaters sailing from Singapore, says Reddy. “This is a great resting point when you come from the south. A sail boat from Singapore will take a few hours, so this is a good place to rest, fuel up or take a short break. This marina can be the gateway for you to fly off somewhere or visit popular tourist destinations – it’s all just a one hour drive away.”

Admiral can accommodate boats up to superyacht size and has modern facilities, including a 3 star Avillion hotel on site. Additional leisure facilities include a swimming pool – the only one to be found in a Malaysian marina – tennis courts, restaurants, bars and an animal petting area for children. Reddy highlights that security of the marina is taken very seriously, with manned security at the entrance gate, a 24-hour camera focused on the gangways and nightly checklists of boats.

A hard stand area offers light repairs and boat lifting services up to 10 tons. Other offerings include a fuel dock, shore power connection and clean fuel, along with internet services, a library and map room. Charter boats are available for hire if sufficient notice is given and taxi services are also easily secured.

The breakwater of the marina is unique in Malaysia. Wide enough to accommodate large houses, it keeps

the marina extremely calm and protects it against westerly winds and the strong storms that blow in off the Indian Ocean. The marina boasts clean water and, while it does not currently have a pump-out system, Reddy says this is in the plan as he intends to take out membership with MIA’s Clean Marina Programme in the near future.

Space for allReddy estimates the ratio of sail to power is currently 50/50. With 100 official berths for both club members and visitors, the marina is always

able to offer space to boaters. When asked if he’d like to expand the marina, Reddy was enthusiastic, but noted the challenges: “Personally, yes I would, but it all depends on demand. It’s very seasonal here – in November, we get lots of yachts from Australia. Starting in Darwin, they sail up through Indonesia. In November, the marina will be a full house. But it’s a chicken and egg situation. You can see that there’s plenty of space here for expansion, but what do we do first? Do we wait for more visitors to come before expanding the marina, or do we expand in the hope that more will come?” While he has no current plans to expand, he is nevertheless focused on keeping his facilities up to date and is in the process of refurbishing the lobby area.

The overriding question for Reddy is how best to market the marina. His method is to share with others what inspires him: sailing. He prefers to promote the marina by organising boating events. “In the past there hasn’t been a lot of marketing of this club with boat shows or regattas. I’m trying to build this up by being involved in organising regattas or cruises.” Unlike the annual rally from Darwin, his events are relaxed and focus on boaters having fun and enjoying good food after a race. He is confident that “boats attract boats,” and that is his strategy.

PUMP-OUT SYSTEMS

One pump – instead of threeWith 48 in-slip pump-out connections and over 1800 feet (548m) of suction piping, the recently renovated phase one section of Riviera Beach Marina in Florida, USA, is a showcase for modern and ultra efficient sewage pump-out design and technology.

Keco Pump & Equipment successfully implemented its newest ultra-high performance peristaltic pump model M68 to provide a robust single-pump solution. If the system had been designed around traditional peristaltic pumps, up to three individual machines would have been needed to provide comparable pump-out performance.

Operating at over 100 gallons per minute (380 litres/min) and only 7.5hp (5.5kW), the industrial pump is able to provide performance and efficiency once only possible with a vacuum tank pump-out system. “The impressive part of this system is not just the 100 gallons per minute performance, but the incredibly slow operating speed of this single peristaltic pump,” says Keco senior vice president, Andrew Bleier. “The consequences of operating any peristaltic pump quickly are high maintenance costs and downtime associated with the replacement of the internal pump hoses,” he adds. The recently installed pump unit, which operates at less than 60 rev/min, will provide maintenance intervals in the thousand hour range rather than the hundred hour range common to smaller, competing units.

The pumping unit, which is located on land, is housed under an inconspicuous 316L stainless steel enclosure and is silent and odourless when operating. The unit is controlled via an integrated UL listed panel including digital wireless pump activation and the MS1 pump-out monitoring service provided by MarineSync. In addition to simply recording equipment telemetry and automating the reporting requirements of the CVA grant, the MS1 system will alert via text message and email of potential system problems. “Including the MS1 monitoring system as a standard feature was a simple decision. We are able to actively monitor the equipment, rather than react to a failure,” Bleier explains. “The MS1 technology has proven itself and enables us to provide the industry leading five year warranty on the equipment.”

The M68 pump platform has been used worldwide in industrial applications, such as mining and municipal wastewater treatment, for over 20 years.Contact Keco Pump & Equipment in CA, USA on email: [email protected]

In-slip system at AlmoujAlmouj Marina, one of the premier marina facilities in the Al Marsa Village of The Wave, Muscat, has been fitted with an ‘under deck’ pump-out system provided by UK company LeeSan and its global partner LeeStrom. The Omani marina accommodates 112 yachts of 10 to 65m.

The installation includes a dual system pump station, which provides suction via LeeStrom’s custom-built, under deck, stainless steel flush fittings to individual berths. The fittings enable 2 inch (50mm) flexible hoses to be connected to each vessel. Each connection can be independently operated from a central control station.

LeeSan also installed an LSPH-100 pump-out station on the fuel dock. This comprises an LS30T peristaltic pump and key-switch operated control panel, all contained in a high grade stainless steel housing. The latter has an extra protective coating that is ideal for the Middle East environment.

In addition to carrying out installation and commissioning, LeeSan is responsible for the ongoing maintenance contract.Contact LeeSan in the UK on email: [email protected]

The tap water of the futureThe first company to supply pumps for waste water in the Netherlands back in the 1980s, Seijsener has now installed hundreds of systems at European marinas and helped water sports enthusiasts become ever more environmentally aware.

In-slip and on the moveAlthough many marinas now have pump-out stations that are open 24/7 and located at easy-access docks, they still become crowded at peak times – especially if adjacent to fuel docks. In-slip pump-out eases the pressure and is becoming more and more popular at larger marinas.

PUMP-OUT SYSTEMS

EMP Industries has made major in-slip installations over the past couple of years – at Alamitos Harbor, City of Long Beach, CA, for 800-900 slips and for 1,000-slip 31st St Harbor in Chicago. Most recently it has also delivered an in-slip system to Stock Island Marina Village in Key West, FL and a central vacuum system at the rebuilt Pink Shell Marina in Ft Myers Beach, FL.

Walt Jackson, regional sales manager, and Chris Barjuca, national sales manager, are instrumental to the promotion of EMP in-slip systems. “A typical in-slip pumping system will be a central vacuum system comprising a pump, suction hydrants positioned to serve multiple slips from one point, and a portable hose reel or cart. Plumbing is run along the docks to connect the

The company offers clear reasoning for the continued importance of pump-out stations – ‘generally speaking, today’s waste water is tomorrow’s tap water.’ Recent analysis reveals that, using existing filtering methods, it is impossible to eliminate 100% of substances such as hormones (residue from contraceptive pills). No one knows how this will impact on long term human health.

Around 80% of all pump-out systems sold by Seijsener are of the stand-alone type. The main advantage of this type, which is available in many variations, is visibility – but it must be strategically positioned in the marina as this will determine how much it is used.

Stand-alone models are fine for use ‘on’ existing marina jetties but, technically speaking, a pump housing is better when positioned in the

lowest possible position, e.g. ‘under’ the jetty. The liquid flows more easily, less suction power is needed and the suction process starts more quickly.

If circumstances allow, Seijsener builds a pump housing underneath the jetty with a connection under a hatch. This also saves space, as was proven at Amsterdam Marina, equipped earlier this year with a pump-out system underneath the pontoon. The same principle was applied to the design of an advanced central (in-slip) pump-out system for Marina The Eemhof in Zeewolde.

Another Seijsener novelty is the use of thin, transparent hoses for wastewater pumps. Not as appalling as it might seem, transparent piping is handy for the operator who can see when the flow has stopped and the tank has been emptied. There’s an educational aspect, too. Anybody

witnessing the pump-out process realises that what they see flowing through the hose, would otherwise end up in the water.

discharge line from the hose reel to the suction hydrant on the dock, and the suction line from the reel to his boat, then push the radio control button to activate the pump and empty the holding tank,” Barjuca continues.

One happy customer, Dave O’Conner, marina manager at Pink Shell Marina has a central vacuum system and the newly patented (March 2013) Vortex hose reel; a multi-position reel that achieves optimum vacuum through the reduction of lift and drag

throughout the hose on the reel.

“The Vortex hose reel is by far the best pump-out hose cart I have used in my 20 years managing marinas,” O’Conner says. “The large tyres are easy to get over obstacles and the reel is very easy to coil the hose on and off of. I can use the built-in remote on/off control at any slip in the marina. I would recommend any marina operator to look at this product.”Contact EMP Industries, Inc in FL, USA via email: [email protected]

hydrants to the pump, which is ideally located on the docks or floats, and then discharges to the upland sewer system or holding tank,” Jackson explains.

High performance ‘diaphragm’ cuts costsCustomers and dealers have responded extremely positively to the newly released, competitively priced Model 2500 electric double diaphragm pump from Edson International.

PUMP-OUT SYSTEMS

Equally suited to fixed dockside pump-out, as well as boat, cart and trailer mounted mobile pump-outs, the

pump has been described as reliable, powerful, user friendly and easy to service and install.

Designed on the same principles as the popular industrial air-powered double diaphragm pump, the 2500 has two vertically orientated pump chambers mounted on each side of a common drive that alternately suck and discharge through common ports. But, unlike the air version, it is powered by an electric drive.

Just another marine diaphragm pump? No. According to Edson, with its powerful continuous suction and discharge, the 2500 will do most of what a peristaltic pump will do – at half the cost.

The best pump-out pumps are those that work under a wide range

In-slip pump-out is provided via four Edson 2500 series double diaphragm pumps installed under stainless enclosures. The pumps are linked to multiple pump-out hose connections along the docks. Photo: C T Larsh & Sons

of conditions and are made of components that are immune to the corrosion of sewage, salt water and the harsh demands of marina use. Any material parts in the 2500 that are likely to become wet are thus made of 316 stainless steel, Viton elastomers or plastic polymers. Cliff Larsh of C&T Larsh & Sons – who has bought and installed over 30 of the new pumps for his marina customers – sums it up neatly: “there’s nothing here to go bad.”

As all marinas are different, Edson provides an array of quality accessories that can be used to customise every system to meet the needs of the operator and the layout of the marina. Accessories include pump enclosures, both stainless steel and glass fibre, pump-out hoses, hose storage devices, hydrants and electrical controls.

In addition to the 2500, Edson also manufactures a range of peristaltic and vacuum pump-outs and has extensive experience with in-slip pump-out systems.

PUMP-OUT SYSTEMS

Claiming to be the only supplier that could deliver in terms of engineering design, rated performance throughput, reliability and ongoing support, WMW custom designed a system for each ferry port to remove up to 6,000 gallons of sewage and grey water during passenger loading and off loading – typically 45 minutes.

The system meets the growing trend to pump waste quickly and efficiently, especially in commercial settings where time is limited.

The technology for this kind of arrangement naturally filters down to smaller systems in use by most recreational harbours including megayacht facilities – whether shared-use or in-slip. “For the larger megayacht marinas, we see a growing trend towards having a pump-out point at every slip,” said WMW president,

Brad Oakley. “Boat owners are requesting ready access to all related services including water, electricity, cable, and sewage disposal. A pump-out system to handle large yachts must be carefully engineered to meet the requirements of multiple users simultaneously.”

“Providing a cost-effective pump-out solution for megayacht marinas poses no concern,” he adds.

WMW also manufactures and distributes reliable and competitively priced off-the-shelf systems designed for smaller marinas where up to four pump-outs are strategically positioned on site. All systems are manufactured in Canada using quality components, primarily sourced from North America and Europe.Contact WMW in ON, Canada on email: [email protected]

Marine13: inspiration for a united industryWhat is the marina market potential in Thailand? Should I invest in the young? How can I make boating appeal to women? Is there an app for that? These questions – and many more – were addressed at Marine13, Sydney, Australia from 28-30th April. With 450 registered participants representing 15 countries, the conference was a resounding success. It hosted 47 plenary and breakout sessions with 96 speakers and presenters across three streams focused on boating business, marinas and boating safety.

membership structures and offering bite-sized trials. Children are a major target market, said dual Olympic gold medallist, Malcolm Page, and sport development director, Ross Kilborn. The lifetime value of one child spending US$1,000 a year on sailing will give US$50,000 to a club over 50 years. A class of 20 children would therefore have a potential lifetime value of US$1 million.

Women are another major – but often neglected – target market, in some part due to lack of knowledge in how best to appeal to them. Jeni Bone, editor of Marine Business World, said that by 2015 women will outnumber men in the Asia Pacific Region. They are better educated, more demanding and more willing to spend than ever before. Women have returned to the workforce in massive numbers, resulting in more discretionary spend, more control of household budgets and a more technological and social media-savvy population. Are club owners missing out on profit by not marketing to 50% of the population? The challenge, said Bone, is to connect with women without boxing them into a stereotype; marketing to women is more than making things pink or glittery, adding happy kids or stating that a club is ‘family friendly’. It would pay more to understand symbolism and invest in quality content and images for all communications.

An online worldOf enormous importance in today’s world, the conference frequently examined the impact of technology on the marina industry. Bill Owens, independent company director at Technology, Strategy and Risk explained that, thanks to social

media, ‘apps’ and web content, the modern boating enthusiast is more knowledgeable, has broader purchase choices, is empowered

to negotiate and is more demanding on service and support. Today’s consumer has the online tools and time to research, enquire, compare and purchase without ‘touching the industry’.

‘Going online’ can be done anywhere and at any time. Last year, Owens said, consumers used mobile data devices more than desktop machines to go online, at a ratio of 2:1. Social media is the bar, club or cocktail party of the online city. It provides a way for people to share ideas, content, thoughts and relationships. Anyone can create, comment on and add to social media content.

In this world, the consumer will find you online. This gives the industry a tremendous opportunity to engage with boat owners, kayak owners, marina users, club members, yacht owners, anglers and many more, but it must also deal with a new range of risks, including navigating through a plethora of technical solutions with increased technical complexity and heightened security concerns.

Capitalising on emerging marketsThe marina sessions drew on maximising profit for marinas and examining marina maintenance and development. An overriding theme for the marina sessions was that of emerging new markets, with China, Korea, Thailand and the countries of South East Asia in the spotlight.

Zhenan Zhang, chief executive manager of Qingdao City Construction Investment Group in China, explained how China’s rapid economic development had produced a ‘golden age’ in which to maximise marina expansion. The number of boat manufacturers in China increases every year and over 100 yacht clubs have been established in the country. The need for more marinas is clear, not only for domestic use – as living standards improve and

living patterns change – but also internationally.

Qingdao’s Olympic Sailing Center in China has proved a huge success. Offering 600 berths, it is the first fully functional modern marina in China. The government is focusing more on the waterfront economy and it supports the marina industry, but Zhang explained that marinas in China are highly dependent on support and are easily affected by the external environment. With little experience in sailing, marina development knowledge is not readily available.

Korea’s ambitious marina development plan includes the construction of 45 marinas in the next ten years to offer 5,000 berths. There are currently 17 existing marinas along Korea’s 5,620km of coastline, offering a total of 1,100 berths. While the government strongly supports Korea’s marina industry and interest among Koreans is steadily growing, it is nevertheless a non-waterfront culture, with a lack of knowledge and experience in waterfront development. The country offers great marina opportunities, but extreme weather and failure in initial projects has diminished enthusiasm.

Scott Finsten, harbour master at Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Thailand, examined how traditional cruising routes around Thailand are changing and emphasised the need for continued development in order to capitalise on increased demand.

Thailand is a strong candidate for further marina development. The region has good quality marinas and repair facilities, with regular organised events in all areas. Thailand is internationally accessible, the cost of living is cheap with low labour costs, and the weather is warm and tropical year-round. The opening up of Cambodia and Vietnam has created a new/alternative cruising route and safe haven during the monsoon period, encouraging boating throughout the year. With a zero duty on importing boats into Thailand, its proximity to other Asian countries and with a growing number of retirees entering the country from Australia, Thailand’s marina sector has great potential.

However, the country does not benefit from government support, unlike Korea or China. Thailand’s political instability further complicates developments and different applications of the law in some areas leads to confusion. Firmer environmental regulations need to be implemented with higher standards in the fishing industry.

Additive specialist expands networkHarbour Town Yacht Basin on Hilton Head Island (South Carolina), Del Rey Landing in Marina Del Rey (California) and Dana Point Fuel Dock in Dana Point (California) are amongst US marinas and fuel docks to join the ValvTect Marine Fuel sales programme so far this year.

As certified ValvTect Marinas, they will also be in the running for a future ValvTect Marina of the Year Award, presented annually at the International Marina & Boatyard Conference (IMBC) and won by Island Marine Fuel of Balboa Island (Newport Beach), California, for 2012.

All three newcomers have significant market reach: Marina Del Rey is one of the largest marinas in the world and Del Rey Landing is the only fuel dock servicing its 5,300 vessels; Harbour Town Yacht Basin is an iconic marina that attracts a wealth of transients; and Dana Point Fuel Dock opens up a broader sales area for ValvTect fuel.

“Dana Point Harbor is one of the most beautiful portside communities in California,” says ValvTect Petroleum president, Jerry Nessenson. “By offering ValvTect Marine fuels, it gives us an important position in the southern California market. In addition to providing ValvTect fuels to the harbour’s 2,500 slip

holders, it makes ValvTect’s specially formulated marine grade fuels available to boaters cruising south to San Diego and Mexico,” he adds.

Over 600 US marinas are now involved in selling and marketing ValvTect fuel via the fuel sales network but additional marketing has also been secured in recent months from boat builders.

In April, ValvTect announced that Century Boats of Zephyrhills, Florida had agreed to include a sample of ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment with each new boat to help its new boat owners avoid problems that can be caused by ethanol blended gasoline (petrol). In June, Key West Boats of Summerville, South Carolina – another builder of saltwater recreational fishing boats – followed suit.

Florida marina invests in top spec fuelling systemStock Island Marina Village in Key West, the largest deep water marina in the Florida Keys, will operate the largest and most advanced marina fuelling system in Florida when its ongoing expansion plans are complete.

Designed to suit the needs of many different vessels, from sports fishing boats to megayachts, the system will be constructed with the most up to date environmentally compliant equipment. The contract bid, conducted by invitation only to pre-qualified contractors, was won by Petroleum Marine Consultants; the only contractor able to meet all of the strict guidelines set out by the client.

The design and build of the marina storage and dispensing system, which offers both diesel and gasoline (petrol), meets no fewer than eight codes and standards. It offers fuel capacity of 40,000 US gallons for diesel and 20,000 gallons for gasoline. All fuel is stored in modern welded double wall UL-142 underground tanks.

Diesel fuel is pumped to multiple fuel dispenser locations using two 5hp submersible pumps and 1,750ft of secondary containment 4 inch and 3 inch piping. Gasoline is pumped to multiple dispensers using one

5hp pump and 1,750ft of secondary containment 3 inch and 2 inch piping. Five dual-hose dual-product PMC Commander dispensers are to be located on the new Bellingham Marine concrete floating fuel dock.

The entire system including tanks, piping and sumps, will be continuously monitored using an Omntec OEL 8000 II

electronic monitoring system, which will include inventory, overfill alarm, interstice and all secondary containment using discriminating sensors.Contact Petroleum Marine Consultants LLC in FL, USA on email: [email protected]

Autonomous fuel stations suit challenging environmentsFuel Systems Engineering (FSE) – a recently formed floating fuel station company operating from offices in Russia and Finland – offers customisable and economical fuel stations for use in harsh environments.

they can double up as fuel stations for snowmobiles. Both stations are ecologically safe, with double-wall hulls, double-wall tanks and a fuel leak protection system, and contain cisterns for sewage and oil collection. Photovoltaic panels can be installed on request.

The stations are claimed to offer a more economical solution than onshore fuel complexes as they have very low maintenance costs. General maintenance is simplified by the presence of automatic equipment on board which limits the need for staffing and reduces costs.

FSE has recently installed an FSE-1 at the River Yacht Club in the centre of St Petersburg, Russia, and an FSE-2 in Kaliningrad, the Russian territory situated between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic Sea. The company plans to install two further stations in this region, as part of the international programme to create the E70 waterway. Additionally, it plans to create and manage its own network of fuel stations in St Petersburg over the next couple of years.

Marina Dobrinchuk, deputy operation general manager at FSE Marketing, visited METS in 2012 to promote the new fuel stations to an international audience. “We received considerable interest from over 20 different countries, from China, India and Egypt to Norway, Belgium and Spain,” she told Marina World. “There is interest from developing countries and from Europe, including Croatia, Italy and Norway.” FSE is also interested in the market potential on lakes located in Switzerland, Austria and northern Italy, where the environment can be particularly challenging.

The FSE-1, at 15.5m x 5.5m width has a full-load draft of 1.5m (0.4m when empty) and a total tank capacity of 50m³, which can be divided into two or three tanks in required proportions. The standard model has two tanks, each of 25m³.

The tanks have a double bottom, double deck and are double-sided, and have six internal bulkheads to eliminate depressurisation and offer protection in harsh conditions.

The FSE-2 station at 9m x 3.2m has a full-draft load of 1.1m (0.3m when empty) and a total tank volume of 13m³.

The two-storey operation area in the FSE-1 comprises a deckhouse and under-deck compartment. The

deckhouse includes an operator’s desk and control panel, shop, WC and shower, and temperature control system. The under-deck compartment includes an office desk with computer and video-surveillance terminal, recreational and working space for two persons, locker storage, a domestic hot water system with heater and a waste water system.

In the FSE-2, the construction of the tank and deck equipment is similar to the larger station, and the deckhouse includes an operator’s desk and control panel.

FSE floating fuel stations are suitable for most locations due to their shallow draft and autonomy, and can be installed in open or protected water – even in icy conditions where

Turning fuel dock pain into profitable gainAs a marina owner, you want your fuel docks to be a customer convenient, environmentally responsible and financially efficient part of the revenue stream but, in the face of skyrocketing fuel costs, ageing equipment and increasingly stringent environmental regulations, how do you do that? The technical team from US company, Sylogist, believes that its automated fuel dispensing software system will make all the difference.

Most marinas have implemented software solutions for the rest of their operations and now the fuel dock is set to undergo its own technological renaissance. A Sylogist automated fuel dispensing software system speeds up the process for boat owners eager to get out on the water, streamlines fuel revenues and lowers logistical costs. It enables you to modernise your fuel dock to today’s standards while keeping your existing pumps and dispensers. Better inventory control and easier environmental reporting is all part of the package. There’s no need for expensive pump upgrades and it ensures your marina is ready for the next wave of credit card changes and chip and pin payment processing requirements. It doesn’t require a POS (Point of Sale) software system (runs with or without), and it can integrate to an existing POS system if you already have one.

Outfitting the fuel dock with a weather resistant, user friendly, outdoor payment terminal changes the whole experience for boat owners who are used to the speedy convenience of filling up their cars with the swipe of a credit card. No more running back and forth from pump to office authorising pumps or processing payments. Eliminating the old fuel dispensing payment bottlenecks and the chaos of paper slips lets you

get more boats on their way during peak rush hour periods. The stand alone, state of the art, front end software console from Sylogist lets you authorise, de-authorise, pre-pay and cash out fuel sales on the spot and it ensures that fuel inventories and sales receipts will balance perfectly at the end of the day no matter how busy it gets. Marina staff can use a cashier card for cash sales, and a dockside payment terminal provides

a convenient way to accept commercial fleet cards at all hours for increased revenue opportunities.

All day, all yearThe world runs 24/7 and so should your pumps. Wayne O’Neil, long time user of the Sylogist solution and owner of Twin Lights Marina on the Jersey Shore agrees. “One advantage of having 24 hour fuel with commercial fleet cards and credit cards is that now we’re seeing commercial fishing vessels getting their fuel in the middle of the night and navy, police and fire department craft using their cards at the fuel dock. That’s big for these folks. They need to get out there in a hurry and no one wants to wait for fuel. And on those slow, rainy days, people can still get fuel whenever they need it.”

Twin Lights Marina has worked hard to achieve a reputation for premium quality marine fuels and it wants easier ways to sell it. “The cashier card works great. It saves the dock attendants from running back and forth between the boats, the pumps and the store. They can authorise the pump right there and process everyone that much faster during those peak busy periods,” notes O’Neil. “People go boating to have a good time. No one wants to get aggravated waiting

or trying to figure something out. They want to get in, get their fuel and get out on the water. The pump instructions are self explanatory and everything goes straight into our accounting software.”

“Fuel might be the highest inventory cost but often it has the least actual control with respect to missing fuel, leaks, short dropped deliveries, honest mistakes and outright fraud or theft. With today’s fuel prices, the loss of even one tank of fuel can cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars,” explains Jim Yelle, Sylogist director of fuel management solutions.

The Sylogist fuel management system, with its ability to receive manual or automated fuel tank gauge readings, can give your marina 100% accountability before, during and after fuel is delivered into the system. This ability to track, monitor and streamline the fuel inventory, dispensing and billing processes is great for preventing losses, detecting leaks and automating the required EPA reporting. Implementation is quick and easy and a simple intuitive, stand alone console allows seasonal and temporary workers to operate the software with a few quick instructions.

“This is more than just a way to pay for gas – it’s a comprehensive solution that also lets you offer automated coupons and customer loyalty programmes as part of your fuel receipts to improve sales in other areas,” Yelle says. “It provides the inventory reports you need to satisfy the environmental reporting requirements. It lets you track, manage and control fuel related expenses. It lets you keep your existing equipment and still stay ahead of the competition. It creates the kind of customer experience that increases traffic to your fuel dock and keeps them coming back for more. It makes the fuel dock the revenue generator it was meant to be.”

Baltic network goes Blue StarThe Marina Network Association (MNA) has opted for International Marine Certification Institute (IMCI) Blue Star certification for its marina network along the Baltic coast.

The MNA – founded in 2003 – is an international marina network comprising 23 harbours in Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Poland. It was formed to establish a strong association and maritime lobby. Since its foundation, the MNA has garnered public praise and expanded its activities by launching its own website and exhibiting at international boat shows.

The MNA will become the only network in the world to receive Blue Star certification for all its marinas and believes firmly that high quality standards are important in order to fulfil the increased needs and expectations of customers. The Blue Star system is immediately recognisable as a standardised quality certification system.

Falk Morgenstern, chairman of the Board of Directors, says that the objective of the organisation is to ‘bring destinations closer to the hearts and

minds of customers’. By establishing a network that covers the entire Baltic region, it is possible to provide boaters with up to date regional information and also encourages active information exchange between network members.

A significant element of the promotional exercise comes in the form of the Bonuscard. This is a harbour brochure, currently in German and English languages, that provides information about the harbours and their services and also offers savings to customers on berthing fees. The brochure is available in each harbour office, at

boat shows, by mail order, app or via the Internet.Contact the MNA in Germany on email: [email protected] and IMCI in Belgium on email: [email protected]

Rolec pedestals earn IPX6 certificationFurther to some minor upgrades, the Spinnaker and Seawave pedestal ranges - manufactured by Rolec Services - have been awarded IPX6 certification. The award follows successful certification to IP65 back in 2009. The Baliza range is currently under test and expected to also receive the coveted IPX6 award.

IPX6 gives clients assurance that pedestals offer the highest grade of

Remote control managementPort Vauban in Le Havre, northern France, has become the first showcase for R-marina, a new remote marina management solution that can carry data from video, audio, voice and Internet on one very secure wireless network.

Developed by French company S2F Network, R-marina is a high speed remote control system offering multiple applications, to suit both marina operator and boating customers. Modular in format, it can be used to create a custom design from scratch to suit a new facility, or be integrated into an existing system.

Further to a call for tenders, Port Vauban opted for an extensive R-marina solution that would enable the harbour office staff to control the entire site remotely. The selected system opens and closes security gates by remote control or smartphone; powers up CCTV cameras wherever they are needed throughout the site and relays images safely to the harbour office; and remotely accesses an intercom network.

Real-time information including tides and weather forecasts, event information and safety instructions is displayed on dynamic outdoor display screens, which can also generate revenue by carrying advertising.

Not only is the system cost-effective and convenient for marina staff but visitors also benefit. Upon arrival, they are issued with a single card giving access to all areas such as pontoons and washrooms and for use in water and electricity pedestals. The universal card can be deactivated by remote control when the visitor leaves.

Port Vauban opened with 200 berths in May 2012 and is entirely managed from a main harbour office. “After one year of operation, we consider that R-marina is probably the best investment made by the marina in

terms of customer satisfaction and ease of use in remotely controlling our applications to manage the marina,” says harbour master, Julien Lebas. “We can now concentrate on added value tasks for our customers.”

International focus for 7th Edition TYHA CodeThe Yacht Harbour Association’s (TYHA’s) 7th Edition Code of Practice was launched in May at the 2013 UK Marina Conference.

Eighteen months in the making, the Code has been carefully drafted and endorsed by a range of experts to offer a guide to best practice for marina designers, developers and operators. It takes into consideration the needs of TYHA’s expanding international membership and the impact of new industry guidelines, and has increased emphasis on the operation of marinas.

“We are really excited for the launch of the 7th edition which contains several thousand updates, making the Code of Practice even more invaluable to marina operators around the world,” said TYHA general manager, Gareth Turnbull. “The Code draws on the best regarded practices in the industry, making it essential reading for avoiding serious risk and implementing the most proven solutions to technical issues.”

The Code contains over 4,000 technical updates, which have been independently reviewed by legal, health and safety experts in conjunction with UK consultancy firm Marina Projects, TYHA’s key consulting partner for the project. Marina Projects director, Mike Ward, described the Code of Practice as an ‘invaluable reference document for anyone embarking on a marine leisure related development.’

“It is a useful starting point for the design process, identifying essential principles as well as highlighting key issues and areas of complexity. It is our experience that its reach extends well beyond the UK and it is particularly well used in new and emerging markets,” he said. “We were delighted to provide assistance to TYHA with the latest revision.”All TYHA members will receive a free copy of the Code of Practice.
