Advertising Supplement to Columbus Business First | 04.19.13(614) 225-6063 | ColumbusRegion.com6 2013 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT reportthe columbus region’s growth strategy

The Columbus Region has experienced tremendous success since Columbus 2020’s inception in 2010,

making significant progress toward some aggressive goals:

The Region has added nearly 46,000 net new jobs, well on its way to the goal of 150,000 by 2020.

Per capita income is up 41.7 percent – well above the goal of 30 percent.

The Region has secured $3.15 billion in new capital investment, representing nearly 40 percent of the 10-year, $8 billion goal.

Perhaps the most powerful example of the Region’s continued success is its ability to attract and retain

business. In 2012, 111 companies announced new locations, expansions or retentions in the Region. Over the past year, the Columbus 2020 team executed 56 business development missions in more than 20 states and six international markets.

The Region is well on its way to being a national leader in economic development, with recognition from multiple organizations including the International Economic Development Council.

This success is due not only to a stable regional economy, but also to the time and financial support provided by visionary public and private investors committed to growing the Region.

Economic development efforts continue to build momentum

CHALLENGE

Over time, the top technology officials from the Columbus Region’s powerhouse companies recognized they

had similar needs and wants – especially in the evolving landscape of big data analytics. The CIOs – from the likes of Cardinal Health, Nationwide and many more – decided to create a taskforce surrounding these technology needs. They realized big data analytics was a priority, and its importance was only going to grow. Their companies needed to be prepared, and wanted to develop the necessary skills to succeed in the new territory.

SOLUTIONTo prepare for this wave of big data analytics, officials at Nationwide, Cardinal Health, Huntington Bank and Limited Brands reached out to top technology companies to explore bringing an analytical center to the Columbus Region. Having access to data analytics resources in their own backyard was a priority.

A key economic contributor for more than 95 years, IBM saw this as an opportunity to continue supporting the Columbus Region, and also a chance to expand its analytics capabilities and extend support beyond the Region.

IBM’s decision to bring its first dedicated advanced analytics center to the Columbus Region was strategic. Companies like Nationwide and Cardinal Health receive assistance with their analytics challenges, while IBM is able to tap into a robust network of thriving customer companies.

RESULTSThe IBM Client Center: Analytics Solutions Lab is the result of IBM’s partnership with Columbus 2020 and some of the largest companies in the Columbus Region. This unique collaboration also initiated a partnership between IBM and The Ohio State University to deliver a pipeline of talent for the growing field of analytics. IBM’s Analytics Solutions Lab could bring hundreds of jobs to the Columbus Region and will help position the area as center for innovation and advanced technology.

With no single industry representing more than 17 percent of overall employment, the Columbus Region offers a diverse economy attractive to companies seeking a stable environment for

growth. Key sectors include manufacturing, logistics, science and technology, headquarters and business services, agbioscience, and international business – adding up to a plethora of employment opportunities for the Region’s talented workforce.

The Region is within a 10-hour drive of nearly 50 percent of the U.S. population, manufacturing capacity and headquarters operations, making it a strategic logistics hub – as evidenced by MSC Industrial’s $55 million investment last year, and many similar projects. Manufacturing also is strong, anchored by

automotive giant Honda and its various regional suppliers. The Region’s largest employer, JPMorgan Chase, is just one of the many business services companies that call the Columbus Region home.

A hotbed of science and technology companies, Columbus has earned Forbes magazine’s nod as the country’s third best city for tech jobs. The Region also is leading the way in agbioscience, experiencing dramatic growth in agricultural and food science technicians and scientists at companies like Battelle and Abbott Nutrition. The Columbus Region also is home to nearly 600 international firms, providing even further reaching opportunities for employment and business partnership.

COLUMBUS CHAMBER:

No one knows the Columbus Re-gion business community like the Columbus Chamber, an organiza-tion dedicated to helping compa-

nies grow through connections, resources and solutions. In its nearly 130-year history, the Chamber has evolved to become the Region’s largest business services organi-zation and primary advocate for businesses large and small.

With nearly 2,000 member businesses—90 percent of which are small businesses with 500 or fewer full-time employees—the Co-lumbus Chamber nurtures business growth. It serves as an extension of its members’ teams, working to save them time and money and propel their businesses forward.

Key services and solutions:

Customized connections to the right people, resources and information. Last year the Chamber staff conducted 1,000 meetings and facilitated thousands of con-nections.

Business advocacy at the local, state and federal levels of government. The Chamber carries the business message on issues like comprehensive tax reform, including mu-nicipal tax uniformity, regulation reform, education reform, workforce development and economic development.

Individually-tailored market research. A research team provides regional economic analysis, as well as local demographic and socioeconomic analysis.

Workforce solutions to find and retain talent. The Chamber connects talent to businesses through consultative services and tools like columbusinternships.com and semi-annual logistics job fairs.

Logistics Council:

A catalyst for

logistics growth

Strategically located between Chi-cago and the East Coast and

within a 10-hour drive to 50 percent of the U.S. population, manufactur-ing capacity and headquarters op-erations, the Columbus Region has become an attractive logistics hub for companies looking to efficiently distribute products nationwide.

Made up of representation from vari-ous logistics and distribution com-panies in the Region, the Columbus Region Logistics Council (CRLC) helps lead implementation of a stra-tegic roadmap, focused on growing the Region’s logistics sector through initiatives like the LogisticsART pro-gram, logistics job fairs, and relevant networking and professional devel-opment events.

According to a report issued by the CRLC in late 2012, the Region’s more than 80,000 employees in transpor-tation, warehousing and wholesale industries represent a concentration of logistics employment 41 percent greater than the national average.

What Columbus 2020 investors are saying...

It was an easy decision for Continental Office Environments to become an early investor in Columbus 2020. I totally buy in to the strategy that Kenny McDonald and his team

have put in place, and believe they are doing outstanding work. They have been extremely successful in landing new companies for our Columbus Region and have many more prospects underway.

Continental Office thrives on economic development and we depend on new companies entering the Central Ohio market to help fuel our own growth. Our investment means that we are helping to fund business attraction, which benefits not only our company but also our clients and business partners. It also keeps us close to the action in terms of Columbus 2020 monthly progress updates and investor meetings that we attend.

What Columbus 2020 investors are saying...

JOELLE BROCKPRESIDENT AND CEO

Leading EDJE chose to become an investor of Columbus 2020 because we fi rmly believe

the partnership is run by exceptionally talented individuals, who with the right support, will help take the Columbus Region to the next level. Our investment means we are helping the community thrive and bring new opportunities, particularly in the technology fi eld, to the Columbus community. As a technology fi rm focused on the Columbus market, local economic development is of the utmost importance as we discover and grow technically talented individuals.

Kegler Brown was an early supporter of Columbus 2020 because we knew it was going to be a critical

gateway that would attract business investments to the Central Ohio region from around the world.

The team that Kenny McDonald has led has done an outstanding job in not only reaching out to attract new companies to invest in the Columbus Region, but also in continuing to assist existing businesses that call Central Ohio home.

Kegler Brown recognizes the immense value of Columbus 2020, what it means to the future of our community, and the benefi ts it brings not only to our fi rm, but especially to our clients.

Columbus is on the move and we want to see the positive momentum continue

locally, nationally and globally. That’s why Plante Moran considers it important to support the economic development eff orts of Columbus 2020. As an investor, we receive valuable information that helps shape our business strategies and growth plans for Greater Columbus and the Region. We value the partnership between Columbus 2020 and Plante Moran, because we have built some great business relationships that have allowed us to continue to grow our practice and create more career opportunities throughout the Greater Columbus Region. Keep up the great work!

We are investors in Columbus 2020 because we believe in their work

and are proud to be part of their success. As a growing marketing fi rm, we have benefi ted directly from their attraction and retention of great businesses. We have also witnessed a growing number of talented people move to Columbus for our fi rm and many Central Ohio companies. The Columbus Region is on fi re!

SWACO is a strong supporter of Columbus 2020 and their focus on economic development

throughout Central Ohio. We have recently experienced their commitment and eff ectiveness in this role. Last year Kenny McDonald and his staff brought to our attention a Florida-based company, Team Gemini, who was looking to develop a sustainable energy green industrial park somewhere in the Columbus metropolitan area. The result of this collaboration, facilitated by Columbus 2020, is a private-public partnership formally executed this past January (2013) in which Team Gemini is investing over $300 million to create a green industrial park on SWACO property. The industrial park will not only increase area recycling rates by using trash as feedstock, but will also create hundreds of new jobs in the area. The value of Columbus 2020 speaks through their accomplishments in advancing the economy of the greater Columbus area for all of us who live and work in the Region.

BRANDING COLUMBUS

Marketing the Columbus Region with a consistent message and creative approach remains criti-cal to establishing the Region as a thriving, desirable business climate. Numerous organizations market Columbus to various au-

diences—Columbus 2020 and the Columbus Cham-ber to businesses, Experience Columbus to visitors, corporations to executives, universities to educators and students, hospitals to physicians and even Co-lumbus residents to their friends.

HISTORICALLY, our community has not marketed itself with a consistent foundation. Visual identities were unique to each organization, providing no rec-ognizable differences between Columbus, Ohio, and the other “Columbus” locations nationwide. As the Columbus Region strove for unity in its branding ef-forts, these inconsistencies posed a problem.

About two years ago, various organizations and stakeholders worked with local agency Fahlgren Mortine to come up with a common theme consis-tent with the Region’s brand essence: a ColumbUS marker and campaign signifying not only the Region’s unity, but also its position in the domestic and global marketplace.

IN THE LAST TWO YEARS the cohesive brand has been adopted by various organizations around the Region, including more than 20 City of Columbus de-partments. The brand also is visible at Port Columbus International Airport and shone brightly last year in New York’s famed Times Square.

Although collaboration has been effective, the brand-ing initiative is far from finished. One of the key pieces of this program is an online toolkit that provides all the necessary visual and communications elements to leverage the Columbus brand, encouraging even more organizations to get on board.

Columbus’ workforce of tomorrowis preparing here today.

Columbus State is the front door to higher education—and a career—for more Central Ohio residents than any other college or university. Most of our graduates remain in Central Ohio, starting businesses and filling key jobs in high-growth fields like health care, information technology, logistics and hospitality. Our alumni generate more than $900 million for Central Ohio every year in higher earnings and the increased output of businesses. We see the workforce of 2020 here today, and they have us excited about Central Ohio’s future.

At Columbus State, we see 2020.
