a celebration of the ways we interact with our world, is now a

signature program of the Center for Architecture. The Center is

a non-profit dedicated to educating design professionals, public

policy makers, and the public at large about how design and the

built environment affects us daily. The Center offers an array of

public lectures, tours, film series and special programs to further

that cause, and DesignPhiladelphia makes a lively and natural

addition to that effort.

As we move through our everyday lives, it’s easy to take the things

that surround us for granted. Every year, DesignPhiladelphia

invites us to take a fresh look around. The 120 events presented

for 2013 help us appreciate, once again everything we see, smell,

hear, touch and even taste.

This year’s theme EXPERIENCEdesign! expresses that engagement

and excitement. The interactive presentations will spark emotions,

evoke strong memories and create lasting connections.

What is it to experience design in all its facets? You have the nine

days from October 10th to October 18th to find out, plus a lifetime

to explore.

The Philadelphia Commerce Department and Community Design Collaborative will co-host the Good Design Is Good Business Conference to promote good design practices for Philadelphia storefronts. In addition to presenting a guide to the best practices, we will discuss available resources to help businesses undertake improvements, and invite guests to present their neighborhoods’ experience with good design guidelines.

Eating Architecture: a conversation with Paulette Singley and Jamie Horwitz Paley Library, Temple University 1210 West Berks Street Thursday, October 10, 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM

The environments in which we prepare, produce and consume our foods both reflect and affect those processes. Eating Architecture (MIT Press, 2006), edited by Paulette Singley and Jamie Horwitz, examines the interplay between food and design through twenty original essays. The Libraries and the Department of Architecture at Tyler School of Art, Temple University welcome Singley and Horwitz to discuss this innovative text, as well as the newest developments in the design and architectural analysis of eating spaces. Join a conversation about the synergy of design and manufacturing with William Sklaroff and his son, Stefan, owner of Cella Luxuria Furniture + Accessories. William Sklaroff has been recognized for his achievements in industrial design for over 50 years, having worked with some of the most distinguished names in the business. He established his design firm in an office on Rittenhouse Square in 1961. In 1966, he created Radius One, one of the most successful desk accessory lines of all time. Its unique curvilinear design in aluminum is an expression of the simultaneity of design, materials, and manufacturing. Radius One has decorated the TV desk of Johnny Carson, and more recently, that of mid-century ad-exec Roger Sterling of the TV series Mad Men.

Creative Action Projects will present plans and test prototypes for “Characterscape,” an installation by artist Nicholas Del Pesco. Collaboration for Innovation in Experience Design: A Dynamic Symposium Solmssen Court, Hamilton Hall, University of the Arts 320 South Broad Street Friday, October 11, 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM

The focus of this interactive symposium is collaborative approaches to integrative thinking in the creation of interpretive exhibitions/installations of all forms. Speakers will discuss case studies of how teams of advocates have been strategically built to apply new approaches in their processes for the purpose of having meaningful impacts on diverse audiences. These teams have utilized the museum or other public venues with socially responsive missions to facilitate local and global change. “Please bring back the escalator.”

That was one of the first requests I received when I joined PHS, and it came from longtime Philadelphia Flower Show visitors. They remembered gradually watching the exhibits of the Flower Show unfold from above at the Philadelphia Convention Hall and Civic Center, which closed its doors in 1996 and was demolished soon after. “I remember the scent of hyacinths and lilies when I entered the Show,” they said. More than anything else, this powerful fragrance stuck with them through the years—an indelible memory shared by hundreds of thousands.

Scent plays a key role in landscape design. It can mark a place, time and feeling. A well placed bed of roses around the patio, or a climbing tower of jasmine near a doorway certainly provides aesthetic value, but it also triggers the memory of that place and that moment in time.

Do you remember the first time you smelled a tomato plant? I do. My brother and I playing with trucks in our grandmother’s garden, reacted to that pungent scent. That singular experience in the garden remains with me today. In landscape design, we use scent to create moods and to engage: A subtle rosemary border to invite touching and tasting. A sweep of lavender to captivate and calm.

Take a walk through the dozens of beautiful landscapes that adorn the city. The connection to scent will help to complete and extend your experience long after the place—and the plants—have moved on.

We are immersed in a sea of waves. The Universe

seems to be nothing more than vibrations of sub-atomic

quanta, visible frequencies of electromagnetic radiation

and audible oscillations of air pressure. As humans, we are

built to experience these waves as a solid physical reality.

As designers, we shape them to form an existing reality or

propose an alternate one.

We all use waves to translate ideas. We commonly express

our experiences by manipulating air pressure with our

mouths through speech. In the same way, a sound designer

uses instruments to shape vibrations into experiences.

Sound does not require our gaze or attention. Its presence

has effect whether or not a listener is explicitly aware of

it. When immersed in audio, we are constantly processing

waves as conscious and subconscious experience.

Loudspeakers allow audio to be encountered in a public

setting, inspiring social interaction, dance or atmosphere.

Headphones create a more personal experience; we ex-

plore a constructed sonic landscape in the isolation of our

own mind-space.

Designing sound requires us to develop a deep understand-

ing of waveforms and how they can be used to express

ideas. Working with the raw materials of waves via synthe-

sizers, we sculpt changes in air pressure and monitor the

effects these changes have on human emotion. In this way,

our work is a constant reminder of the relationship between

waveforms and the experience of physical reality - between

ourselves and our own consciousness.

stadler-Kahn, a textile and design shop in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood, is premiering Josephine, a new carpet created in collaboration with the longest continuously operated Wilton carpet mill in the US, Langorne Carpet Company. Josephine was inspired by the wealth of remainder wool at Langhorne’s mill in Penndal, PA. Alex Stadler (designer/owner of stadler -Kahn) developed the striped pattern to utilize a continulously changing selection of “odd lots” of yarn into a finished and beautiful carpet. Josephine honors Philadelphia art collector and philanthropist, Josephine Albarelli, whose photos of her life in Mexico City in the 1940s and personal collection of Mexican textiles were the visual starting point for the pattern. Jason Rhoades, Four Roads Institute of Contemporary Art 118 South 36th Street Exhibition on view Sept 13 to Dec 29 Hours: see website below

Jason Rhoades, Four Roads is the first major American museum exhibition of this exceptional artist who died in 2006 at the age of 41 and is among the most ambitious exhibitions ICA has ever presented. Rhoades, who grew up in California, is part of a generation of artists who created vivid sprawling environments out of a wide range of materials. Rhoades counted Marcel Duchamp, Donald Judd, race car driver Ayrton Senna, actor Kevin Costner, and the movie Car Wash, among his many diverse cultural touchstones, both high and low. His spectacular, overloaded installations use found objects, neon, Lego, power tools, macramé, snaking wires, figurines, and a vast range of other materials. Rhoades’s engagement with American car culture, cowboys, power tools, consumer culture, and the ethic of the self-made pervades, evoking a version of the American ethos that is playfully supercharged and sometimes ironic but always peculiarly sincere.

the fashioners is a collective of designers and artists who use cloth as the main component for their individual works. Their goal is to share their expertise, ideas and resources with one another to create a lively community of support and collaboration. the fashioners’ installation for DesignPhiladelphia posits an alternative approach to the haute couture fashion house model that both illustrates and unravels the institution. Each fashioner has an affinity for particular aspects of the process resulting in: bespoke pieces that disregard rules of scale and repetition; functional garments animated by woodworked armatures; artisanal hand dyed and printed fabrics; and unique collage-accessories that reference the poetry of the process.

t O u c h To touch is human. We touch one another in greeting -

a handshake, a kiss on the cheek- and we crave touch as a

way to stay interconnected with other humans. Touch is a

pure and wonderful mixture of physiology, physics, memory

and intuition. It provokes lust, guides our way and heals

what ails us emotionally and mentally. Consider that when

we are born into this world, we feel the familiar touch of

parents’ skin before we see. At birth, touch is our guide to

sense and see the world.

Haptic technology attempts to mechanically simulate

touch through vibrations, forces and motion. For example,

haptic technology is being developed to better simulate

the hand and feel of fabrics - the potential cost savings in

product development are huge. Haptic devices are also

being explored by designers for modeling and prototyping

other materials through the computer.

Touch is probably the most complex sense to simulate and

design because while the sense of touch is very tangible

between human beings, its subtleties make it difficult to

replicate. The after-effects of touch reverberate out to our

emotions and wellbeing, and science has now documented

the healing effects of touch. How amazing would it be to

design sensory cues into our lives for both personal growth

and commercial ventures? Learn and experience how we

can design touch into our lives.

(MIT Press, 2006), edited by Paulette Singley and Jamie Horwitz, examines the interplay between food and design through twenty original essays. The Libraries and the Department of Architecture at Tyler School of Art, Temple University welcome Singley and Horwitz for a conversation moderated by Alicia Imperiale, Assistant Professor of Architecture at Temple.
