LEARNING AT THE WORKPLACE -FORMAL & INFORMAL

Increasingly organisations are utilising workplacelearning as a means to achieve their short-term goals aswell as long-term, strategic visions. Workplace learningcan be formal or informal.

The term informal learning was first introduced by MalcolmKnowles. Since then there has been various definitions/perspectives on ‘informal learning’ including:

• Informal learning is a process oflearning that takes place ineveryday experience, often atsubconscious levels. (Rusaw,1995)

• Not only is informal learningunique to the individual, butcontrol of learning rests primarilyin the hands of the learner(Marsick and Watkins, 1997)

• Informal learning is that in which the learning process isneither determined nor designed by the organisation(Stamps, 1998)

To understand the relationship between formal andinformal learning, it is usefulto refer to the metaphor ofbricks and mortar used byBell (1997). Formal learning isdescribed as bricks withinformal learning as themortar, facilitating theacceptance of the formallearning. In other words,BOTH kinds of learning areneeded as this provides thesynergy that produceseffective growth.

Whenever we initiate formal learning (training andeducation), we are ensuring that employees learnparticular work processes or pick up certain skills which aretoo important to be left to chance (i.e. informal learning).

While informal learning is not specifically determined ordesigned, certain strategies for facilitating informallearning at the workplace could be adopted.

IDEAS FOR INFORMAL LEARNING:1) The shifts at an assembly line

overlap by half-hour or more.During this time of overlap, workers and supervisors fromthe outgoing shift wouldupdate the incoming shift ofany problems that they hadencountered as well as discusspossible causes and solutions. Additional steps such asremoving barriers to learning, rewarding learning andproviding relevant resources will enrich the discussionand enhance the learning.

2) A specific time could be set aside where people cometogether for the purpose of exchanging information. These exchanges can be scheduled at a number ofdifferent times. They can exist as stand-alone sessions, designed solely for the purpose of exchanginginformation, or they can be adapted to staff meetings(weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc).

3) One organisation organiseda cross-unit sharing sessionwhich was held for an hourand a half first thing in themorning. During this session, employees from twoseparate units cametogether to learn more about each other. Coffee anddonuts were served, and each group was given onehalf hour to present, leaving another 30 minutes for a“cocktail-party” style discussion and networking.

4) Bell also suggests reading and study groups as meansfor facilitating informal learning in the workplace. Lunchdiscussions and book clubs are opportunities forinformal learning, but they require planning. Employerscan support these initiatives by providing meetingspace, resources to purchase the books, and evenfood, if the discussions are held during the employees'lunch hour. The important point is that the time bescheduled and “honoured.” Participation can bevoluntary or managers, supervisors, and/or peers cannominate an employee to attend.

Among some of the topics that could be shared are:software shortcuts, how to use new software, timemanagement, how to handle difficult customers,

information resources, etc. Employees may alsoconsider a brief discussion and/or presentation oncoursework recently completed through a company-sponsored training programme.

5) Among the types of informal learning documented inthe journals of employees from a manufacturingcompany were: a willingness to participate in meetingsor join a committee and an interest in engaging infocused workplace conversations with other employees.

At Palliser Furniture Ltd (the largest furniture manufacturer inCanada), the employees and instructors believe that thereis a synergy between formal and informal learning.Learning, whether it is intended or consequential occursfrequently in our work lives. What makes the learningexperience positive is the willingness by both learner andinstructor/trainer, or between co-workers to treat each

other with respect and to beengaged in the process.

In short, there are various strategiesused by different organisations, but the goal is the same - topromote and encourage learning. So let’s ask ourselves, “Are wepractising any of these strategies inour organisation?” Alwaysremember that “Knowledge isPower”.

LEARNING AT THE WORKPLACE - FORMAL & INFORMAL

Learning is a life long process that occurs within us andin doing so, we improve and progress in various areasin our lives. Each and every one of us has different

types of learning styles which we have adapted sinceyoung to assimilate the vast information available to us.There are eight types of learning styles and we can classifythem into four groups. These groups are explained below:

1. Active & Reflective Learning - Active learnerstend to retain and understand information best whendoing something active with it (discussing, applying or

explaining to others). This type oflearner would rather study in groups

as they can discuss and explaininformation to each other. On the other hand,

reflective learners wouldthink about theinformation first andstudy alone as they can

concentrate better.

2. Sensing & Intuitive - Sensing learners like studyingfacts and solving problems using established methodsand they dislike complications intheir studies. Sensors are patientwith the details of informationobtained and they would dobetter in laboratory work. Sensorsare also more practical andcareful in dealing with newinformation. On the other hand,Intuitive learners preferdiscovering possibilities andrelationships. They are the ones

who link problems and come up with new interestingsolutions. Intuitive learners are very comfortable withabstract mathematical formulation and they might bebetter in grasping new ideas.

3. Visual & Verbal - Visual learners remember bestwhen there are presences of pictures, diagrams, flowchart, films and alsodemonstration. Verballearners on the otherhand excel better whenthere are written andspoken explanations.Generally, we learn betterwhen information ispresented to us visuallyand verbally together.

4. Sequential & Global - Sequential learners learn in alinear motion where they follow step by step in alogical manner. On the flip side, global learners learn inlarge jumps, absorbing information randomly withoutseeing the connections and then suddenly getting thewhole picture. The sequential learners would be ableto explain to others how they come to the conclusionstep by step. Global learners might be able tocomplete complex problems fast but they wouldn’t beable to explain the method of solving it.

After knowing all the above learning styles, we should askourselves ‘what do we know about our own learningstyle?’ How can we improve our current learning styles toenhance our knowledge so that we can excel further inour respective line of work?
