WINE CLUB

MUSIC GROUP Sock Hop: There was a whole lot of shakin' goin' on at our first 50's-style sock hop, hosted by the music group Nov. 6. We spent the evening dancing the old dances, singing along to the old records, and sipping on root beer floats. Highlights of the evening included a dance contest and a “Top 3” contest. The most popular songs, as voted by the audience, were “Rock Around the Clock,” “Wake Up Little Susie” and “Love Potion Number Nine.” We all had so much fun that we hope to do it again next year. Caroling 'round the tree: You're invited to join the mu-sic group Monday nights Dec. 2, 9, 23 and 30, at 7pm, for songs of the season at the clubhouse. We'll provide song books and vocal support, accompa-nied by a little guitar, mandolin, accordion, keyboard, fiddle or banjo. We may even mix in some special solos featuring our best vocalists and instrumentalists. This will be your only chance to sing carols with our BBV music group this season, so bring your family and friends and let's make some holiday music to-gether.

The Wine Club sure has been having fun lately. The Old World/New World comparison tasting and dinner we offered in October was a major, sold-out success! And November was a terrific break from the norm (not that we were in a rut!), when the group Happy Houred at Chez Stone and then boarded a chartered bus for Belling-ham where we attended a tasting of southern French wines at the Old World Deli. After dinner, the bus made it's way over to Mallard Ice Cream for a cool dessert. On Saturday, December 21st we're going to continue our exploration of wine and food at our annual holiday dinner. The evening begins at 6pm with luxurious hors d'ouvres and champagne followed by a sumptuous sit-down dinner of three expertly-prepared courses paired with outstanding wines. A grand holiday cookie table, dessert wine and coffee will round out the night. Cost for this event: $45 per person. As a reminder, everyone in the Village is welcome to attend. This group has no member-ship roster, no dues, and no officers. All it takes to join an evening with fellow wine and food enthusiasts is an advance reservation. To book a seat, contact Jenise Stone at 371-8610. Coming up in January: a vinous tour of the South Afri-can cape, where the first wineries were established in the 1600's.

GOLF NEWS CONT’D The above member information and the $5.00 fee may be given/mailed to any of the following officers: Bob Simpson (President; 360-371-2636; [email protected]); Jim Macmillan (Vice-president; 360-371-2933; [email protected]); Anne Brown (Secretary; 360-392-0887; [email protected]); Ron Bogen (Treasurer; 360-371-7350; [email protected]). Please consider joining one of these committees; be active in and support the new club. Don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime oppor-tunity!

Fall/Winter golf activities continue: Don’t put away the “sticks” yet! There’s still plenty of fun golf and activi-ties to enjoy for those who have not fled the Village for warmer climes: The Golf Shop is open when the weather looks promising and is conducive to play The “Monday Money Group” plays each Monday (weather permitting) at 11am; $10 entry fee with payouts for low net individual, low net team, skins and greenies The BBV Men’s Club still plays on Thursdays (11am tee-off) weather permitting Join golfers and non-golfers alike for Monday Night Football on the big TV screens at the Golf Shop: all-you-can-eat tacos for only $5.00, selected beers at reduced cost, and a football pool to try and win a few bucks; and, it’s a great way to give the cook of the household a night out!

Winter reminders for all: Non-golfers: The golf course may seem empty and inviting but it remains in use for golfing only. Believe it or not, many golfers (new and old) seem to “come out of the woodwork” at this time of the year to challenge the course and Mother Nature. So, please no walking, biking, playing, etc., on the course; don’t risk being injured or causing inadvertent damage to the course. Honor the ‘honor box’: If you don’t have a valid/current Annual Golf Pass and the Golf Shop is closed,

SOCIAL CLUB Welcome Committee: If you are a new owner in the Village and haven’t been contacted by the Welcome Bas-ket lady, please call Judy Lackey at 371-3387 or the Of-fice at 371-7744. We have a warm welcome and gift bas-ket full of goodies and local information we would like to deliver to you. The supply of small gifts for the Wel-come Baskets is depleted. Donations of items like small candles, generic lotions, note cards or note pads, fancy pens, etc. are welcome. Please contact Judy for more information on items needed for the Welcome Baskets. Helping Hands: We have a good group of volunteers who are available to provide temporary assistance to those in the Village who are sick, recovering from sur-gery or otherwise need help. We also have a good supply of medical equipment such as crutches, electric scooter, wheel chairs, shower chairs, walkers, and toilet risers, etc. There is a folding wheel chair ramp available for short-term loan. If you or someone you know needs a "helping hand," please call Sheryl Jensen at 371-3505. Please remember to call Sheryl when borrowing or re-turning all equipment. And thank you for returning it in a sanitized condition. Food Bank Donations: Food Bank donations are needed, especially during the holidays. Please check your cupboards and pantries for those extra food items that could be donated to the community food bank. Non-perishable food items can be dropped off at the Club-house any time it is open for any event. Please do not bring food that has an expiration date prior to De-cember 2013.

FROM THE MANAGER

CONT’D FROM THE MANAGER

With December coming, we are officially into our winter months. There are a few things to keep in mind. Animals looking for food may be foraging into your back yards, so keep garbage in your garbage cans and the lids secure. Also, members with children in school may want to know if school is going to run late or be

canceled for the day. Listen to the Seattle TV stations or KGMI radio for announcements (as early as 5:30am and no later than 6am), check the school district web site www.blainesd.org or the school snowline at 332-0789. As always, the roads may be slick or icy, so drive with caution and watch for children going back and forth from the bus stop, walkers, and/or joggers. It is also important to pick up after your own pets. We get complaints very often about doggie doo-doo along the roads where members have to walk, plus it affects the water quality of the lakes and ponds. Thanks. The Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce has asked me to remind people that they have three events tied around the New Year. The Ring of Fire & Hope is New Year’s Eve starting at 7pm with flares being lit to remember the past year and reflect on the new year. Flares can be pur-chased at area hardware stores. The Polar Bear Plunge is on January 1 with registration at noon at the Visitor’s Information Center 7900 Birch Bay Drive. There are prizes and you need to be registered to win a prize. No cost to register and you do not need to register to partici-

GOLF NEWS CONT’D you must pay the $10 day-fee. It’s still a bargain, so why risk a fine and/or the embarrassment of being caught not paying? Golfers: The course is more prone to damage during the winter, so please keep motor carts on the concrete pathways as much as possible, keep hand carts off tee boxes and greens, and repair fairway and green divots that you and others make to keep the course healthy and in good playing condition for those who follow. Also, when frost is on the ground, do not start play until it melts. And respect private property at all times. Thank you!

BRIDGE CLUB

YACHT CLUB As the calendar year comes to a close, the term for our new Bridge began (on November 1st). The Bridge and Com-mittees have been hard at work for the past month planning exciting events and cruises for 2014.

But before we move on I’d like to say a few words to Past Commodore Dennis Duncan:

Dennis, thank you for a fantastic year. Your leadership has been exemplary. On your watch you led us through some difficult changes and gave us all great memories to take away from the wonderful social events and cruises.

Thank you for all that you’ve done Our Education Coordinators have been hard at work putting together a very exciting lineup of educational events for us. On Friday, November 8th we held the first presentation in our series of education seminars– Winterizing and Spring Commissioning Your Boat. The seminar was a great success with over 25 attendees. Our guest speaker was Frank Shea, shop foreman at Blaine Marine Ser-vices. After a great talk and rousing Q&A session we raf-fled off two $50 gift certificates that were generously do-nated by Blaine Marine Services. The lucky raffle winners were Dennis Duncan and Al Oakley. Many thanks to everyone that came out and supported our debut educa-tion event! UPCOMING YACHT CLUB EVENTS: Sat., December 7th, 6:00pm – Christmas Party – Please join us for Songs, Sweaters, Stew & Sweets! Oh baby it’s cold outside! To ward off the chill our wonder-ful Social Events Committee is preparing a heart-warming main course of beef stew. We ask you to pull out your favorite holiday recipe and bring an appetizer or side dish to share. After dinner we’ll sing a few songs of the season accompanied by our own Steve Brand on key-boards. And don’t forget that we’re having a contest for the most “distinctive” holiday sweater! So dig that sweater out of mothballs that your Aunt Ellie knitted for you and join in the fun. We’re awarding a prize for the sweater that gets the most votes. Who knows? It might be you! If you haven’t already done so, please call 360-224-2260 or email [email protected] to RSVP.

YACHT CLUB CONT’D Thurs., January 9th, 7:00pm – Post Holiday Blues Movie Night - By early January we’ll all be climbing the walls. The weather will be dismal and many of us will be in a post-holiday funk. To beat those blues, please join us at the Clubhouse for a nautical movie and treats. Travel to the tropics with Captain Ron, whose seamanship techniques are, shall we say, “unique”. Stay tuned for more details about this event. Wed., January 15th, 7:00pm – Yacht Club Education Series Seminar - Our education seminars will be held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7pm in the Club-house. Our next event will cover two top-ics: Emergency Contact with the Coast Guard fol-lowed by Customs Clearing, Nexus & Immigration . Jordan Galloway from the US Coast Guard Bellingham office will be on hand to review what to expect when talking to the Coast Guard on the radio during an emer-gency. Two representatives from Customs & Border Pa-trol will help clarify the rules and regulations associated with clearing into Canada and back into the U.S on your boat. Please plan on joining us at the Clubhouse for what promises to be a very informative evening. Dawn Baker Commodore
