Congratulations to the following GMA and GMA News TV (GNTV) shows for being cited among the 10 Pinaka-Magiting na Programang Pantelebisyon :

GMA News TV (Channel 11) documentary program Reel Time won the George Foster Peabody Award and a Silver Medal at the 2013 New York Festivals.

GMA News TV, only on its second year, has won three New York Festival medals (including 2 silvers in 2012 for Front Row’s Yaman Sa Basura and Bente Dos).

The Peabody Awards is considered the Oscars of broadcast and electronic journalism and recognizes excellence, distinguished achievement and meritorious public service.

The winning episode of Reel Time, “Salat” (Bone Dry), is described in the Peabody website as an “unflinching portrait of a woman with six mouths to feed which personifies a brutal statistic: two out of every ten Filipino children are malnourished.” Although a first for the fledgling news channel GMA News TV, it is the third George Foster Peabody for GMA News and Public Affairs and the entire Philippines as well.

“There are many other malnourished children like Mary Rose who need government attention. This award

encourages us as documentary filmmakers to do a better job in telling these important stories,” says Reel Time Program Manager Nowell Cuanang (already a Peabody winner for previously directing I-Witness’ Ambulansyang de Paa).

Executive Producer Sharon Masula thanks all the viewers who began helping Mary Rose and her family after watching Salat, “Because of the viewers, we feel there is greater value in the documentaries we produce,” Masula said.

The producers received the New York Festivals medal at a ceremony held at the National Association of Broadcasters’ Conference in Las Vegas on April 9. They will accept the Peabody Award at the Waldorf Astoria in New York on May 20, 2013.

The award-winning documentary program Reel Time airs every Sunday night on GMA News TV Channel 11.

GMA Network maintained its TV ratings dominance in the key areas of Urban Luzon and Mega Manila in March, according to data from Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

For the period March 1 to 31 (March 17 to 31 based on overnight data), GMA registered comfortable leads against ABS-CBN and TV5 in these two areas which are particularly important to advertisers.

Urban Luzon and Mega Manila account for 76 and 59 percent, respectively, of the total urban TV household population in the country.

In Urban Luzon, GMA scored an average total day audience share of 33.7 percent, higher than ABS-CBN’s 29.4 percent by 4.3 points, and TV5’s 15.2 percent by a notable 18.5 points.

Meanwhile, GMA also kept its ratings advantage in its bailiwick Mega Manila

with a 34.5 percent total day household audience share, ahead of ABS-CBN’s 27.6 percent by 6.9 points, and of TV5’s 16.3 percent by 18.2 points.

17 programs from GMA made it to the list of the 30 most watched shows in Urban Luzon, while 18 programs from GMA were in the list for Mega Manila.

Multi-awarded news magazine program Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS) was a consistent top-rater in NUTAM, Urban Luzon and Mega Manila in March as it led all GMA programs in the respective lists of top-performing shows.

Other Kapuso shows that landed in the top programs list per area are the epic-drama Indio, weekly drama anthology Magpakailanman, movie special Kapuso Movie Night, recently-concluded primetime drama Pahiram ng Sandali,

GMA and TV5 subscribe to Nielsen TV Audience Measurement while ABS-CBN is the lone local major TV network that reportedly subscribes to Kantar Media, formerly known as TNS. In Mega Manila, Nielsen TV Audience Measurement gathers data based on a sample size of 1,190 homes as compared to Kantar Media’s 770 homes. Meanwhile, Nielsen has a nationwide urban sample size of 2,000 homes, which is statistically higher than Kantar’s sample size of 1,370.

After releasing its highly praised cinematic version of the Philippine national anthem in 2010, GMA Network launches another theatrical rendition of “Lupang Hinirang” on TV and in movie theaters.

The 2013 version pays tribute to present day heroes (fire fighters, teachers, farmers, traffic enforcers, doctors, OFWs, athletes, etc.) by drawing inspiration from heroes of the past.

“Every person who embodies the virtues of honesty, hospitality, dedication, integrity, among others, rightly deserves to be called a modern hero. You don’t have to die to become a hero; you could be one by making a difference in the lives of your fellowmen,” said GMA Chairman & CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon.

“We are proud to present our latest version of ‘Lupang Hinirang’ to Filipinos here and around the globe. In this iteration, deliberate focus was given to our present day heroes and the many ways they contribute to nation-building, wherever they may be,” GMA President and COO Gilberto R. Duavit, Jr. said.

“It is our hope that the featured vignettes serve to inspire us by recognizing and celebrating the efforts of our countrymen,” Duavit added.

The 2013 “Lupang Hinirang” project was made possible through the partnership between GMA Network and SM Cinemas.

The theatrical version is shown at the beginning of the first and last screenings in all SM Cinemas nationwide.

The music video airs on GMA during sign on and sign off.

The 2010 “Lupang Hinirang” music video won the Bronze World Medal at the 2011 New York Festivals World’s Best TV Programs and Film Awards in the Music Video category and the Bronze Anvil from the 2011 Anvil Awards by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP) in the Public Relations Tool category.

Kapuso Magazine (KM): How would you describe your job as (program) anchor? Jorge Guerrero (JG): Challenging.

KM: What is the most difficult part of your job as anchor? Why? JG: Finding the proper delivery for some Iluko words. Because Ilocos is a “multi-accent” region.

KM: What is the impact of Balitang Ilokano among local viewers? JG: Viewers identify themselves with the program.

KM: What makes Balitang Ilokano different from the other newscasts? Why? JG: It is the only local TV news program that carries the “name” of Ilokanos themselves.

KM: How important is it to have a local newscast in Ilocos? JG: Ilocos is one of the fast rising regions in the country today. Thus, a local newscast is needed to monitor its growth.

KM: Cite 3 significant stories aired by your program so far. JG: The alleged vote buying in Abra, the blacksand mining in Ilocos Sur and Pamulinawen Festival in Laoag.

When GMA Network opened its originating station in Ilocos in mid 2012, local newscast Balitang Ilokano, which uses the Iluko dialect, was also launched.

Now, Balitang Ilokano is a must watch program among households in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and Abra.

Its popular segments include Batang Ilokano (features achievements of children where the children themselves do the voice-over), Senior Ilokano (features achievements of senior citizens) and Live Report (on the spot reporting of hottest issues).

Other segments are Sport Ilocos, Intayon Agpasyar (tourism) and Exclusive Report.

Construction of classrooms in Kinablangan Elementary School and Cateel Central School is already in full swing, while the MOA singing and groundbreaking ceremony for Saoquigue Elementary School and Abihod Elementary School, and Boston Elementary School took place on April 5 and 6, respectively.

Earlier this year, GMAKF handed out roofing materials as an initial means to help local residents of Davao Oriental rebuild their homes. Several relief operations and medical missions were also held in succession, following the onslaught of the typhoon.

“We are targeting the completion of at least 30 classrooms before the start of the school year,” said GMAKF Executive Vice President and COO Mel C. Tiangco.

“This is going beyond providing temporary assistance especially in areas where our help is needed the most,” Tiangco added.

The Kapuso Foundation identified Kinablangan Elementary School and Saoquigue Elementary School in Banganga; Cateel Central School and Abihod Elementary School in Cateel; and Boston Elementary School in Boston as the beneficiaries of the first phase, with several other schools for the second phase.
