PART II. ASCE STUDENT ORGANIZATION GOALS
Summary statement:
The mission of the USF Student Chapter of ASCE is to enhance the personal and professional development of Civil
Engineering students, to promote the College of Engineering, and to serve the community. These goals are
accomplished through technical, professional, and civic activities, such as active participation in professional
meetings, technical presentations and tours, community service, and competition in the annual Southeast Student
Conference.
Goals and Assessment:
Goal #1: Develop a more structured organization that promotes a broad level of participation where all contributions
benefit the lives of ASCE Student Chapter members.
Action Plan: Organize more fieldtrips, create more activities, encourage existing members to promote ASCE, have
more meetings throughout the semester and give more insight for a better understanding on what ASCE can
offer its members.
Assessment of Goal #1: Member participation and the amount of Chapter meetings have increased, and more people
are aware of ASCE’s presence on campus.
Follow-up Plan for Goal #1: Current officers will help following years officers in a transition period by transferring
all knowledge and information. Establish a structured timeline of goals for next year; continue to attend
Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders (WSCL).
Goal # 2: Establish a new annual fundraiser in order to make USF-ASCE financially sustainable for years to come.
Action Plan: To participate in Raymond James ARMARK Concessions Fundraiser. Students will sell concessions
and our Chapter will receive a percentage of total sales. Start organizing an annual 5-K in junction with the
ASCE West Coast Branch.
Assessment of Goal #2: The Chapter earned $3,283.50. This was a successful fundraiser that was started this year
and will be continued for years to come.
Follow-up Plan for Goal #2: Continue provide incentives for students to volunteer in the ARAMARK Fundraiser in
order to achieve higher participation and revenue.
Goal #3: Provide more opportunities for students to gain knowledge and industry related experience outside the
classroom aside from the Conference Competitions.
Action Plan: By expanding the amount of activities of the Chapter and delegating responsibilities, ASCE can
provide more opportunities for students (executive and non-executive board members) to have leadership roles
and gain experience via various chair positions. Sending students to the Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders
(WSCL) can provide them with leadership knowledge that will enhance their ability as to perform in all aspects
of school, work, and most importantly, life.
Assessment of Goal #3: There has been more involvement in ASCE in activities other than just Conference.
Students have assumed roles that have traditionally been fulfilled by executive board members such as the
Stampede of Service Chair, the Conference Chair, the Engineering EXPO Chair, and the formation of a new
5-K Chair.
Follow-up Plan for Goal #3: Continue to encourage students to take leadership responsibilities in ASCE. Develop
new annual events for ASCE to host.
7
Goal #4: Utilize connections developed by students such as internship connections, family/friend connects, and
community outreach and/or social networking connections to establish new contacts for the student
organization.
Action Plan: Encourage students how to interact with professionals, interview, provide a resume workshop, which
are chances to meet and network with professionals. Establish a contact list of professionals that can be
followed up by next year’s officers.
Assessment of Goal #4: Students have managed to use contacts to obtain sponsorships in both materials and
monetary donations. Other relationships developed have resulted in new speakers talking to the Chapter.
Follow-up Plan for Goal #4: Maintain relationship with connections established with ASCE by sending thank-you
and follow-up letters. Continue to support the students professionally and academically. Hold more than one
resume workshop by different speakers in order to obtain a variety of viewpoints.
Goal #5: Increase campus awareness of the Chapter and attain greater volume in active membership.
Action Plan: Advertise ASCE in the form of flyers, internet, social media outlets, and verbally promote the Chapter.
Attend and continue to give presentations at the USF College of Engineering SMART Start and Engineering
Foundation Class monster lecture sessions.
Assessment of Goal #5: The organization has increased the amount of active members. The ASCE website has been
updated which has attracted more members now than in the past. The number of likes of our Facebook page has
vastly increased. The overall Chapter meeting attendance has increased.
Follow-up Plan for Goal #5: Utilize more of the media outlet offered by the Center for Student Involvement.
Continue to give more presentations to underclassmen. The Chapter should also host more events and activities
in order to encourage greater involvement.

Report Prepared By: Ana Pérez Martin
Activity Summary:
This meeting was mainly for the purpose of discussing the Engineering EXPO and 2013 Conference. EXPO Chair,
Gerson Monroy, spoke a little about each type of activity that was going to be displayed at the EXPO for this year.
Everyone participated in a small brain storm activity to get more ideas of what else could be displayed at the
Engineering EXPO.
Registration late fees, Conference competitions and deadlines for Conference were also discussed. Trang Luong, the
professional paper writer for the competition, presented what she had so far in the chapter meeting to get feed back.
Activity Assessment:
This activity was very successful and informative to chapter members.
Suggestions for the Future:
These type of meetings are crucial to prepare for Conference and make sure that everyone has all the information
that they need.

Activity Summary:
USF Engineering EXPO is a free event which is designed to educate students K-12 on the importance that math,
Science, technology and engineering has in their everyday lives. It is a hands-on activity where children are taught
basics of engineering which 2will hopefully encourage them to pursue the math and science fields. ASCE displayed
the concrete canoe where the children were able to get in it and float on the concrete canoe. The steel bridge was
also displayed. We also had children competing for prizes for building the strongest bridge across a box and
withstand domino pieces (load). Children also competed by constructing and loading aluminum foil boats with
domino pieces. We also had a Skee Balls made out of concrete which they played with.
Activity Assessment:
This is a very successful activity. It encourages children to pursue engineering as a career and see a little more of
what engineering is about.
Suggestions for the Future:
Make sure to test things before they are displayed. Have enough time to set up before children come.

Activity Summary:
For this meeting Skanska USA was our speaker. He went over some of the Constructions that they did such as the
University Mall, Interchange airport and a Subway in New York City.
Activity Assessment:
This meeting was very successful in showing students more of what Professionals do, what they are in charge of and
more of an inside look of what it takes to be part of these type of constructions.
Suggestions for the Future:
Invite this guest speaker for future meetings.

Report Prepared By: Ana Pérez Martin
Activity Summary:
Conference is held every year hosted by a different University in the southeast. All the schools compete in
engineering based competitions. Two of the biggest competitions are the Concrete Canoe and the Steel Bridge. The
Concrete Canoe is a canoe made out of concrete which is raced by up to four people at a time. The steel bridge is a
competition where a scale bridge is made and it is tested on different categories; such as, being able to withstand a
certain load while being economic and other characteristics. There are also competitions for geotechnical,
surveying, concrete, and others to test the knowledge and creativity of students.
Activity Assessment:
This is one of the most successful activities that ASCE does and will continue doing. It is a great way to apply all of
the things that are being learned in classes as well as learning how to work in groups.
Suggestions for the Future:
Make sure that there is a Conference chair to be able to keep competitions organized throughout the planning and
building period. Also, advertise the competitions well in advance.

These types of meetings are a great way to show what was accomplished with everyone’s help.
Suggestions for the Future:
Make sure to hold a meeting after Conference to be able to see what has been accomplished. Recognition of people
who participated would be a good idea for future meetings like this one.

This meeting was scheduled for elections. Each Candidate that was previously nominated had a couple of minutes to
speak about what they were running for and why they were the best fit person do take the position.
Activity Assessment:
This was recently implemented and was very successful to get a better idea of who each individual is voting for. To
elect them for more than just a name that seems familiar.

Pre-plan the date in advance to give time to promote that elections are coming. Stress the importance of each student
that is planning to run for a position to read and understand their role. If elected. Also, encourage to talk to past
