Welcome to the fi rst Annual Report of the American Truck WWHistorical Society. Over the last several years we have made WWnumerous changes to the way we do business at the headquarters level in order to operate more like the business that we are. For some time, members have been asking for more information on how the fi nancial side of our operation works —more importantly, where the money goes. An Annual Report was long overdue.

I’m happy to report that the fi nancial aspect of our Society is stable at this time. Several changes to the way we do business havecontributed signifi cantly. Meaningful budgeting has put our annualconvention on a solid footing, and we are on track to be able to predict consistent profi tability from that venture. Our new Annual Giving Program has seen good response and also is contributing nicely to the operation. Th e Planned Giving Program is in itsinfancy, but will help us fund our Endowment as we move forward.

Without our members and their contributions, monetary orotherwise, we wouldn’t exist. I want to take the opportunity to thank each and every one of you for what you do for ATHS.Whether you simply pay your dues each year, hold an offi ce in yourlocal chapter, volunteer at convention, or contribute in the many other ways available, everyone has a part and it all counts toward the continued success of our Society. I look forward to many successful years ahead.

People join ATHS for many reasons: some enjoy the Wheels of Time and e Show Time magazines, others e

collect trucks, memorabilia, photos, die-cast models,etc. Whatever your reason for being an ATHS member, we strive to off er benefi ts and services related to yourparticular area of interest.

Annual membership dues are the lifeblood of non-profi t organizations like ATHS. Over the years, ATHS has been very fortunate that its membership stays for an average of ten years or more —a goal that other organi-zations strive for. It is considered much easier and costeff ective to keep a member than to gain new members.

While ATHS members typically renew at a rateof over 90%, and we attract an average of 1,400 new members a year, we have experienced a slight decreasein total membership in the past few years. However, there is one other aspect of membership that aff ects ATHS more than other organizations, and that is the average age of our members. ATHS experienced a net loss of 304 members in 2013; of this number wereceived notice that 128 had passed away. It is also pos-sible that some of the balance may also be deceased, but we did not receive notice of their passing.

Th is information is intended to reinforce the no-tion that attracting new members is very important to ATHS. In 2013 an incentive trial membership program was instituted, off ering two free issues of Wheels of Time to new members. Th e program attracted 598e newmembers; of those, 563 had not been a member before. Th is program helped ATHS gain 114 new members in

2013, and we are tracking these accounts to see if more will join in 2014. At fi rst glance it may appear that theprogram should have gained more members, but this program will be successful if even half of this group of new members renew for a second year or more.

Membership recruitment is important to the on-going success of ATHS, and as members we all need toshare what we like about ATHS with potential mem-bers as often as we can.

Th ere is a special group of ATHS members whodeserve to be mentioned. Listed below are the names of the ATHS Life Members. An ATHS Life Member isan individual or corporate representative who providesadded fi nancial support to the objectives and activi-ties of the Society. Donations to the American Truck Historical Society range from archival items, volun-

teer eff orts, and monetary gifts. Everyone can feel pride that so many ATHS members support the Society in so many ways.

Members have been supporting ATHS for as long as the Society has been in existence. In aneff ort to organize our giving programs in a moreformal way, the ATHS Annual Giving Cam-paign was established in 2013. Th e program will provide revenue that will be board-directed annually to assist with various projects and tobuild the reserve and endowment funds.

Th e ATHS library is named the Zoe James Memorial Library in honor of the Society’s fi rst managing director, above right.


In the last year, the Zoe James Memorial Library has seen a great many changes. ATHS has been focused

primarily on achieving immediate cataloging and ac-cessibility goals, as well as the implementation of writ-ten policies and procedures governing the collection of the Zoe James Memorial Library. Th e following is thelist of highlights that occurred in the past year:

• Magazine holders were purchased to betterorganize the Library’s collection of periodicals.

• Th e collection was reorganized to better facili-tate access to materials.

• An internship program was established with the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

• Th e Library participated in the Museum Assess-ment Program.

• Began utilizing the Past Perfect database systemto catalog materials in the collection.

The year 2013 marked Wheels of Time’s 34th consecutive year s

of publication. Th e bimonthly magazine of the American Truck Historical Society (fi rst published inOctober 1980) has undergone many changes in that time, including a recent redesign of both the iconic cover and inside content to keep current with publishing trends.

Among the subjects covered inWOT in 2013 were the restored TMotor Cargo/Consolidated Freight-ways sign outside ATHS headquar-ters; trucking in Yakima, Wash.,(the site of the 2013 convention)and Washington-state trucker CarlWagner; Vitalis Truck Line; Bob West’s seven-decade career in truck-ing; Sisser Brothers of New Jersey; Canada’s Mackie the Mover; and the

new home of theHays Antique Truck Museum.

A regular series,“Never Too Old,” about members who still work theirantique trucks every day, featured storiesabout Texas live-stock hauler Wayne Wyatt and his 1969Kenworth, Jeremy Sweeten’s 1971Autocar, and Randy Ogier’s 1969Peterbilt. “Th e Wrench Bench,” a series of technical articles written by former automotive engineer Doug Nettles, also is popular among the Society’s “gear heads.”

Dick Callaway, an ATHS mem-ber in Louisville, Ky., and a regular

contributing writer toWOT, wrote articles onTTArkansas Best Freight(ABF), Fageol trucks (a 2-part series), and Hen-drickson’s 100th anniver-sary.

Th e premier magazinedevoted to trucking histo-ry, “Wheels of Time is the e‘glue’ that binds ATHSmembers,” said Stormy

Wylie, editor of WOT and the an-Tnual convention issue, Show Time. “It is the one benefi t of membership that everyone shares. I can’t tell youhow many times members tell me that the minute they receive WOTin the mail, everything else stops while they read it. Th at is such a compliment.”

The year 2013 saw the advent of several projects at ATHS head-

quarters in Kansas City, including the Motor Cargo/CF sign, upgrad-ing the building HVAC systems,and re-arranging the Zoe James Memorial Library.

Th e library reorganization wasundertaken to allow for the use of a standardized numbering system accepted nationally in the archival community. See additional informa-tion on page 8.

Th e installation of the Mo-tor Cargo/CF sign was a big step toward completion of a project that

began in 2011 with the donation of the sign by Tim Kinsley of Kinsley Construction, York, Pa. After being refurbished in 2012 here in KansasCity, the sign was installed in front of the ATHS offi ce building.

Th roughout the rest of 2013, work was completed on the elec-trical system, brick patio, and thefi rst phase of the landscaping. Afterlighting the sign, we calculatedthe energy usage and determined that we could operate the sign on a

nightly basis for ap-proximately $1,000 annually. Shortly after the initial instal-lation of bricks in the patio area, the weather turned cold,ending any work for the rest of the year. Bricks may still be purchased and will be installed in May and October eachyear. Th e balance of the landscaping will be installed in 2014 as soon as weather permits.

Th e ATHS facility was built in 1988, and the HVAC system had only routine maintenance

since that time. In early 2013, it was becoming apparent that we were approaching the end of the service

life of that equipment. At that timeit was determined that an upgradewas needed.

We contracted with an engineer-ing fi rm to design the HVAC systemand review bids. After reviewing allbids a contractor was selected; work began in October and continuedthrough the end of the year.

Th e new system incorporated additional heating capability formore even heating throughout thebuilding. Th e inclusion of a variablespeed fan drive and an updated con-trol system reduce energy usage and improve comfort for guests, tenants, and staff .

ATHS has owned the property in Kansas City since May 2001. We have been very fortunate to keepthe building systems operating forso many years without any majorbreakdowns. To be good stewards of the property owned by the Society and its members, a regular pro-cess of reviewing and repairing orreplacing items in an appropriateand custodial manor is a priority. In the near future, the ATHS Board of Directors will be looking at other areas of the property that may needattention.

It is always good to have mem-bers visit us in Kansas City. If you have been here before, we welcomeyou to visit again. However, if you have not had the opportunity tovisit, please consider stopping by asyou are travelling in the Midwest.
