After celebrating a milestone decade of STRUT dance in 2012, this year sees us entering a new and exciting phase.

Our 2013 program, will interlace generations, trace imaginative patterns of dialogue, connect stories across states and continents, and combine bodies in space on a grand scale.

The primary focus of STRUT is to suppor t Western Australian indepen-dent dance artists in developing their creative concepts, while raising awareness of the potency of dance. This year, STRUT draws upon the expertise of Jean-Claude Gallotta and Mathilde Altaraz, Yvonne Rainer, Myriam Gourfink, Liz Lerman, Shaun Parker, Leigh Warren, Joanne Leighton and Rebecca Hilton.

Each guest artist brings a sense of historical depth that encourages the emergence of new ideas amongst artists and an increased knowledge of dance for audiences.

STRUT is pret ty much a whole of body experience — developing Western Australia’s independent dance ar tists, expanding oppor tunity, access and reach. In 2013, we step beyond the developments of Future Moves with a firm commitment to building oppor tunity for WA ar tists to develop new ideas and works, and being able to work and connect with ar tists of international significance.

STRUT is about the ar tist, but it is just as much about the audience. If we are to continue to seek to build contemporary dance to a position where it has a firm place in the cultural calendar, we need to continue to build our audience to make it possible.

Some of what you can experience in 2013 may be works in progress, others will have been finessed over a much longer time. Some pieces will be shor t and some long. Some may perplex and others will amaze. This year, we show there are no barriers of generation or geographical borders in contemporary dance.

It is all made possible through the support of the State Government of Western Australia through the Department of Culture and the Ar ts, The Federal Government through the Australia Council, and our program par tners — local, national and international.

OLWYN WILLIAMS

Each year STRUT dance initiates a program of choreographic activities and of fers a range of responsive programs to suppor t its members including:

• Creative residencies, both curated and responsive

• International exchanges• Studio showings and in-theatre seasons• Regular training and workshops

A single dance score per formed by three generations of stellar Western Australian dancers, expressing the dif ferent stages we go through in life: from the childhood innocence of play, to coming into adulthood with the world at our feet, and to the wisdom we acquire with maturity.

Choreographer Jean-Claude Gallot ta, who has been director of the Centre Chorégraphique National de Grenoble since 1984, has always enjoyed involving people from all walks of life in his dance works, especially children.

Trois Générations is proudly presented by STRUT dance, in association with Steps Youth Dance Company, the Centre Chorégraphique National de Grenoble (France) and the Per th International Ar ts Festival.

‘Dance is hard to see’, wrote Yvonne Rainer when making her seminal Trio A. This per formance-lecture by Sara Wookey examines Rainer’s statement and Trio A itself to raise questions of the transmission of dance from one body to another.

Exploring a methodology behind dance making and the engagement of process as material, Wookey will both per form iterations of Trio A and discuss her personal experiences of working with the esteemed Yvonne Rainer.

Trio A is presented by PICA and STRUT dance. Project initiated by Hannah Mathews with thanks to Per forma.

Presented by STRUT dance, the EYES WIDE – open dance platform – will take hold of the iconic King Street Ar ts Centre for six days in November, presenting a vast array of dance on a local, national and international scale.

All eyes will be on Western Australian independent dance and our connections worldwide, with a lively and playful program of activities, including:

MADE IN TAIWAN (FRANCE/AUSTRALIA)

Australian born Joanne Leighton, Director of CCN Belfor t (France), will per form her signature solo, introducing the Made in... series: a play on copy, erasure, and the variations that a changing perspective on the same material suggests. The piece is permeated by fractures, interruptions and cuts, of ten created by the public themselves.

DANCE SITES (WA /NSW/ VIC)

A newly established network for Australian independent dance, between STRUT dance, Critical Path (NSW) and Dancehouse (VIC). Select ar tists will work with Rebecca Hilton, engaging audiences with open rehearsals and more formalised presentations over three nights.

DYUETTO (SOUTH E AST ASIA-WA) WITH LEIGH WARREN (SA)

Launched in 2007, Dyuetto promotes cultural exchange between Western Australia and Asia through the duet form. Indigenous dance ar tist Simon Stewart work with Ly Ly Tran (Vietnam), accompanied by body-percussion dancer Alfira O’Sullivan (NSW) under the mentorship of Leigh Warren (SA).

IN SHORT CURATED BY UNKEMPT DANCE (WA)

Those over-caffeinated, lightly freckled, mischievous prime-movers at Unkempt Dance piece together a second season of choice new works by emerging ar tists, following their hugely successful first season in 2012.

STRUT ON SCREENCheck out a unique selection of dance films and documentaries, featuring prominent choreographers alongside films by Australian dance filmmakers and Western Australian choreographers.

STRUT dance has secured a new year of suppor t for up to four SEED Residencies, in the second half of 2013. SEED Residencies provide specific suppor t for choreographers in the initial “seed” stage of their projects, allowing them to explore their ideas in the studio towards the creation of new work.

STRUT regards SEED residencies as critical to its role as a choreographic development centre, building a dynamic contemporary dance culture and community in Western Australia.

SEED ar tists will be invited to present a 15-minute “snapshot” of their residency projects during the EYES WIDE – open dance plat form – in November.

The STRUT dance SEED Residencies are suppor ted through the WA Department of Culture and the Ar ts.

CRIT ICAL PATH E XCHANGE – SUSTAINABLE BODIES OF THE FUTURE

Two WA dance artists will be supported to participate in this Critical Path workshop series at Performance Space, NSW, in mid-June. Led by Myriam Gourfink (France), Paul Gazzola (NSW) and Garth Paine (NSW).

IETM E XCHANGE (F INL AND) – INTERNATIONAL RESIDENCY

STRUT Members Isabella Stone and Ella-Rose Trew will develop work at the Jojo-Oulu Dance Centre in northern Finland and present Sue Peacock’s Lost and Found as part of the Oudance festival in September.

DYUETTO – CRE ATIVE DE VELOPMENT
