Long known as a leader in intercollegiate athletics, the Lone Star Conference (LSC) is an innovative athletics conference that aims to provide a superior competitive

experience for member institutions and to allow for comprehensive development of student-athletes through academic services and life skills programming. The LSC continues to build upon its proud history while intending to be recognized as the premier NCAA Division II conference in the nation. The league’s mission is to foster student participation and success among member institutions in Division II intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of each institu-tion’s total educational program. The LSC strives for academic excellence, stresses involvement within the community, and prides itself in upholding traditions while continually seeking new opportunities to provide student-athletes with a unique and superior experience. The LSC - founded on April 25, 1931 - has developed from a five-team conference of Texas-based schools to a nine-member league that spans three states (Texas, Okla-homa and New Mexico). The league continues to assist its member institutions in the maintenance of intercollegiate athletic programs that are compatible with the highest standards of education and competitive sports. Throughout the league’s 82-year history, various institutions have competed un-der the LSC banner. Today, only Texas A&M University-Commerce (then East Texas State) remains from the original group that was formed in 1931 when North Texas State, Southwest Texas State, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin withdrew from the old Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The membership alignment has changed over the years, with current members having been added from 1954 to 1995. Texas A&M-Kingsville (formerly Texas A&I) joined in 1954, and Angelo State in 1968. Conference membership remained within the Texas borders until 1984 when East-ern New Mexico was admitted. Since then, the LSC has included members from Ar-kansas and Oklahoma. Cameron (1988, 1996) was added near the outset of an expansion phase, while Texas Woman’s (1989) and previous members West Texas A&M (1986, 1993) and Tarleton State (1968, 1994) joined the league soon after. Midwestern State was admitted early in 1995, while Harding reconnected with the league as an affiliate member in track and field in 2013. Past members of the LSC include Trinity, Houston, Lamar, Howard Payne, Sul Ross State, McMurry, Harding, Ouachita Baptist, Central Oklahoma, East Central (Okla.), Northeastern State (Okla.), Southeastern Oklahoma, Southwestern Oklahoma, Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word. While the LSC has maintained a long-standing tradition of competitive athletic programs for its members, many teams and individuals have gone on to distinguish themselves on the national stage. Entering 2013-14, LSC member institutions have collected 74 NCAA national championships since the league joined the Division II membership in 1982. The LSC conducts conference championships in 16 sports (seven men and nine women). Men’s championships include football, cross country, basketball, baseball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and golf. Women’s titles are determined in volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, softball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and golf. The conference office is located in Richardson, Texas, a northern suburb of Dallas. Stan Wagnon serves as Commissioner, with assistance from Jay Poerner (Compliance) Melanie Robotham (Media Relations) and Tommy Wright (Corporate Sales and Mar-keting).

LION SOCCER FIELDThe A&M-Commerce Lion Soccer Field has served as the home

of Lion soccer since 1999, serving as the host facility to a num-ber of thrilling A&M-Commerce soccer matches. Located on the southwest corner of the A&M-Commerce cam-pus, the Lion Soccer Field has been in its current location on the corner of Culver Street and Hubbell Drive since the start of the 1999 season. Prior to that the Lions played where the current base-ball field is at the Cain Sports Complex. Lion Soccer Field has proven to be a significant home field ad-vantage as A&M-Commerce has compiled an 93-38-7 (.674) mark at home. It served as the host venue for the 2004 Lone Star Con-ference Championship as the Lions clinched its second LSC title, defeating West Texas A&M 2-1. A&M-Commerce soccer fans also witnessed a 2-1 victory over second-ranked Metropolitan State in 2006. With seating for up to 1,000 fans, Lion Soccer Field has seen a handful of renovations over the past few seasons. Extended bleach-ers were added to the south side of the facility prior to the 2008 season, with lights added in 2009 as A&M-Commerce defeated Dallas Baptist 4-1 in the Lions’ first home night game on Sept. 1, 2009. New signage along the east and west fences behind the goals added a significant touch in 2010 with a new game operations box ready to go in time for the start of the 2011 season. The field was also resoded for the upcoming 2013 season.

The A&M-Commerce faithful have helped make Lion Soccer Field one of the toughest road trips in the Lone Star Conference.

The Lions have had three All-Americans play their collegiate soccer on the grass at Lion Soccer Field, including 2009 All-American MEAGAN LASLEY.

A&M-Commerce played its first ever home night

game on Sept. 1, 2009, de-feating Dallas Baptist 4-1.

DR. DAN JONESA&M-COMMERCE PRESIDENT/CEO

University of Texas, 1975 (B.A., B.S.)Rice University, 1978 (M.S)

University of Iowa, 1983 (Ph.D)Fifth year at A&M-Commerce

Dr. Dan Jones was appointed as the 11th president of Texas A&M University-Commerce by the Texas A&M University

Board of Regents in July 2008. Born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Dr. Jones earned a pair of bach-elor’s degrees from the University of Texas at Austin in 1975. He achieved his bachelor of arts in english and his bachelor of science in magazine journalism, graduating with highest honors in both disciplines. Jones then achieved his master’s degree in english from Rice University in 1978, followed by a master’s degree in American studies from the University of Iowa in 1982. While in Iowa City, Jones also attained his Ph.D. in American studies in 1984. Jones’ career in education began at Casper College in Casper, Wyoming, where he served as an English instructor from 1982-85. He continued his academic career at the University of Houston from 1985-2002, serving in a number of positions before ultimately being named dean of University College. Following his service at the University of Houston, Jones served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Texas A&M International University in Laredo, Texas from 2003-08 until his appointment to become the president of A&M-Commerce. As president, he is passionate about the power of education to transform lives, families and communities. He has partnered with the Hispanic, Black, Asian and North Dallas Chambers of Com-merce, and has implemented strategic initiatives geared at making A&M-Commerce both military friendly and a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). Jones has been a member of many organizations, including the Rotary Club, American Association of State Colleges and Univer-sities, Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Commu-nications and Texas Council of Chief Academic Officers. He has also served on numerous boards that benefit the community, in-

cluding Chamber of Commerce, United School Day and Project MEND (Medical Equipment Network for the Disabled). In his capacity as a University administrator, Jones has pub-lished several articles and made numerous presentations dealing with higher education and popular culture, while overseeing a handful of projects across the Texas A&M University-Commerce campus. One of the defining aspects of Jones’ career has been the tre-mendous growth of A&M-Commerce. When he took over in July of 2008, enrollment was just over 9,000 students, which has esca-lated to reaching 12,000 in the fall of 2012. A number of facility im-provements have been made throughout campus as A&M-Com-merce is one of the fastest growing universities in the state of Texas. Jones is also an avid A&M-Commerce sports fan and can be seen at countless athletic contests and athletic department func-tions. He and his family were present at the Lone Star Conference basketball tournament in both his hometown of Bartlesville as well as the Allen Event Center, as well as multiple Lion athletic de-partment functions. Jones has been instrumental in the success of the Harvey Martin Classic and played a key role in the hiring of a handful of Lion head coaches, including head football coach Colby Carthel. Jones is married to Jalinna Jones and the couple has two daugh-ters, Aislinn and Allyson.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR RYAN IVEYRYAN IVEY

ATHLETIC DIRECTORUniversity of Memphis, 2004

First Season at A&M-Commerce

Ryan Ivey was introduced as the Texas A&M University-Com-merce Athletic Director at a press conference on January 7,

2013, and since that day, he has hit the ground running. Just two weeks after his hiring, Ivey made his first significant impact on Lion Athletics, hiring Colby Carthel as A&M-Com-merce’s 19th head football coach. But that was just the beginning. In six months at the helm, Ivey has announced the addition of an intercollegiate softball program, which will begin in the spring of 2015. He also had a head coach in place, hiring Richie Bruister as the Lions’ first head coach just a few weeks after he led Texas Wo-man’s to an LSC championship and an appearance in the Division II National Championship. Additionally, Ivey has revamped the Lion Athletic Club and has made it a priority to reach out to Lion fans across the state of Texas, holding a series of town hall meetings as well as launching the Lion Safari Tour. He has also brought new ideas and initiatives to help push A&M-Commerce Athletics into a new era. Ivey comes to A&M-Commerce from McNeese State Univer-sity in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where he has been an integral member of the Cowboys athletic department since 2007. He has served as Associate Athletic Director since August 2010, handling the day-to-day operations of the department both in an internal and external capacity. Internally, Ivey’s key contributions have come in overseeing McNeese State’s nearly-eight million dollar athletic budget, han-dling the business operations on a day-to-day basis. He has also been responsible for implementing new money saving initiatives within the department as well as providing fiscal responsibility. Additionally, Ivey has overseen McNeese’s game day opera-tions, helping to provide an entertaining and memorable experi-ence for fans at Cowboy home athletic events while also handling the responsibility of scheduling for all 16 Cowboy and Cowgirl athletic programs. Working directly with head coaches, Ivey has

also played a key role in helping 15 of McNeese’s athletic programs increase their Academic Performance Rate to .925 or higher, im-proving from just four when he arrived. Externally, Ivey has handled the responsibilities of McNeese’s corporate sponsorship program. Since taking over the program, corporate sponsorship revenue has increased over 80%, bringing in over $750,000 per year. Ivey authored a revenue generating master plan for the Cowboy athletic department as well as spearheading two different marketing campaigns which resulted in record-break-ing results for the Cowboy football and basketball programs. In addition to his McNeese State responsibilities, Ivey has as-sisted in the execution of the 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012 State Farm Southland Conference Basketball tournaments. Ivey has also made his mark spearheading postseason events, serving as the tourna-ment director for the 2008 and 2012 Southland Conference Wom-en’s Soccer tournament, the 2009 Southland Conference Softball tournament and most recently, the 2011 and 2012 FCS National Championship games. Prior to his time at McNeese State, Ivey spent two seasons as the Director of Operations for the women’s basketball team at the Uni-versity of Memphis, his alma mater. He also has experience serving as the Marketing and Promotions Coordinator for the University of South Dakota as well as a Stadium Operations Assistant for the Memphis Redbirds of the Pacific Coast League. A native of Mayfield, Kentucky, Ivey was a four-year letterwin-ner at Memphis as a punter and holder on the Tiger football team, seeing action in both the 2003 New Orleans Bowl and the 2004 GMAC Bowl. He earned his bach-elor’s degree in sports management in December 2004, followed by his mas-ter’s degree in sport and leisure commerce in Au-gust 2010. He met his wife, Kelley, while attending the University of Memphis and has two sons, Jett and Ace.
