Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to present this year’s calendar of Continuing Medical Education programs. Our courses and conferences are designed to share new clinical concepts and techniques that will help your patients and enhance your practice. A variety of programs are offered to meet the needs of comprehensive ophthalmologists, subspecialists, ophthalmic nurses, and ophthalmic technicians.

Through lectures, case studies, and discussion, our faculty will update you on new approaches to the diagnosis and management of eye disease across subspecialties. We will also bring you the latest findings from research and clinical studies that are yielding promising new treatments for our patients.

While these programs are quite concentrated, each will have ample time for discussion and interaction. You will have the opportunity to review complex cases with colleagues and course faculty — and to share your best clinical practice tips. Attending these programs will also satisfy your accreditation requirements.

It is a special pleasure on behalf of the faculty and staff at Kellogg to invite you to take part in the wonderful series of events planned for this year. Please take a moment to review our upcoming programs and select a few that best serve your practice. I look forward to seeing you at one or more of our course offerings.

Sincerely,

Paul P. Lee, M.D., J.D.F. Bruce Fralick Professor of OphthalmologyChair, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual SciencesDirector, University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center

The techniques involved in the evaluation and treatment of children are a very important skill to acquire and perfect, yet pose some unique challenges. Pediatric eye care professionals will discuss techniques and pearls for testing vision, performing retinoscopy, evaluating for strabismus and amblyopia, performing prism measurements, and measuring intraocular pressures in the pediatric population. Additionally, treatment modalities for amblyopia will be discussed, including pearls on prescribing glasses in children. This course will include a hands-on portion demonstrating and practicing vision testing and prism measurements with the guidance and assistance of the lecturing faculty.

3 Saturday, March 22, 20148:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Basic Principles of Refraction, Retinoscopy, and Contact Lenses Two of the most basic, yet critical aspects of an eye exam are the assessment of vision and the subsequent refraction to assess and improve vision potential. Refractions can be guided with skillful usage of objective retinoscopy, and then perfected with subjective input from the patient. Our expert team of optometrists will provide an introduction to the optics of refraction. Lectures and tips on performing refractions for both glasses and contact lenses will be given, including a computerized and hands-on retinoscopy session. Pearls will be shared on refracting pediatric patients. Finally, contact lenses and contact lens options available in 2014 will be presented. Courtney A. Dewey, O.D. Paul J. Grenier, O.D.Amy L. Friday, June 13, 20141:00 p.m. – 4:15 p.m.An Overview of Ocular Oncology and Ultrasound Imaging Ocular oncology is a diverse field affecting all aspects of ophthalmology. Disease presentation, treatment, and prognosis vary widely based upon the area involved and type of tumor. This course will introduce participants to the various ophthalmic aspects of oncology. The basics of ophthalmic ultrasound and its uses will be highlighted, as well as the specific use of ultrasound and ultrasound biomicroscopy in evaluation of intraocular tumors. This course will include a hands-on portion demonstrating and practicing ophthalmic ultrasound with the guidance and assistance of the lecturing faculty. Cagri G. Besirli, M.D., Ph.D. César A.
