Congratulations Nazareth Academy! Freddie’s Fanatics are named Comcast 2011 Battle of the Fans Football Champion. On February 22, 2012, Nazareth’s student section – Freddie’s Fanatics received the Comcast Battle of the Fans championship banner in which they earned 51% of the vote during a recent poll run on the Battle of the Fans website. Nazareth’s student section was selected for the competition for its tremendous energy and enthusiasm during its appearances on the CN100 Game of the Week this season.

On April 19, 2012, Nazareth Academy inducted a select group into the Nazareth Academy Fine Arts Hall of Fame. This evening celebrated the fine arts and those who have made a significant contribution to the arts while at Nazareth and beyond. An apprecia-tion of Fine Arts has been an integral part of the Nazareth Academy educational program since the inception of the school in 1900. This celebration occurred before a benefit performance of the spring musical, Fiddler on the Roof.

$301,000 raised at Nazzapalooza Auction. On Saturday, February 25th, Nazareth Academy held its 33rd Annual Parents Club Auction. This year, nearly 400 guests arrived at Drury Lane Oak Brook ready to bid on a variety of auction items. The generosity of those in attendance, as well as all of those who contributed auction items, helped make this one of Nazareth’s most successful events! Thank you for your donations, purchases, bidding, participation and sponsorship.

On Sunday, January 22, 2012, Nazareth Academy held its annual Call to the Heart Mass and reception. Generous supporters have made a tremendous difference in the lives of our exceptional students and school. These individuals and their families value the mission of Nazareth, heard the call for time, talent and treasure and responded with their whole hearts. This year’s honorees were Laura Kelly Smith ’74 and Charles and Nancy Usher. This special event allowed Nazareth a time to thank all its benefactors who have shared so many of their gifts.

On Saturday, January 14, 2012, six athletes, a coach and a friend of Nazareth were honored at Nazareth Academy’s Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony. They are: Thomas Richardson (Coach), David Geary (Friend), John Gardner ’86 (Athlete), Robert Krahulik ’92 (Athlete), Amanda Lindwall ’00 (Athlete), Patricia Ducey Miller ’86 (Athlete), Nora Strauch ’97 (Athlete), Baxter Swilley ’93 (Athlete)

We are fortunate to experience a daily exchange of gifts. We see it in the classrooms, on the stage, on the field and in the sometimes ordinary conversations including colleagues, students, parents and alumni. Our mission to educate the “whole person” draws forth the gifts and talents of our students. We are blessed to see the tremendous growth that happens in four short years! There is a fine line between where the gift giving ends and the receiving begins. It is gray at best. People are extremely generous with knowledge, care, time and money. The recipients of this generosity are often obvious but as many donors will tell you, it is they who benefit the most, knowing that their dedication and gift-giving has truly changed another’s life. We make no bones about it; we are dependent upon the generosity of others to operate our school at this level of excellence. We need the members of our faculty and staff to “go the extra mile” consistently, and we need the financial support of our parents, alumni and friends. When you share a gift with us it helps with our general operating budget (if given unrestricted) or supports a specific need (a restricted donation). We are always so grateful to receive your support on behalf of our students who undoubtedly benefit from whichever form of donation you choose. May each of us continue to recognize the ways our lives have been gifted and may we, in turn, “pay it forward” for future generations of Roadrunners!

Thank you for your generous support.

Throughout this past year, as a school community, we have reflected on the importance of these phrases. We have inventoried the many ways our students, colleagues, alumni, parents and friends have bestowed their gifts on us. We have reflected on the calls we have heard to share our gifts with others in the Nazareth community. The words that grace the cover of this issue are the words our students used to describe the many gifts they have received or been called to give because of their experiences here at Nazareth.

In this issue, you will meet some tremendous people who represent the community we call Nazareth...many have been gifting us for years with their time, talent, treasure and devotion...some are more recent with their gifts. Universally, they are all united in their generosity to Nazareth Academy.

Nazareth Academy is an amazing community filled with gifted students, faculty and staff, alumni, parents and donors who share their gifts with our fine school and with one another. We celebrate each other’s gifts because we truly believe that it is in giving that we receive.

Nazareth has been a positive influence in my life from the first day that I walked through its doors as a freshman student. It was very clear to me early on in my experience at Nazareth that teachers and staff were present not only to ensure that students received a sound education, but learning occurred in a caring, sensitive and personal manner. This unique approach to

each student was exemplified not only in the classroom, but in all of the extracurricular opportunities that permitted students to grow together with an eye towards concern for others. Whether it was time spent in the classroom, in a school-sponsored club or in a musical production, the message of teamwork and responsiveness to the needs of others was always present.

I was very fortunate to have the unique opportunity to give back to Nazareth when I was hired to teach and guide the School’s Drama Department shortly after I graduated from college. I attempted to carry out my responsibilities as a teacher and mentor in the same Christ-like manner I experienced as a student. I was especially grateful for the opportunities to be a spiritual partner with

Generosity and the gift of sharing is an intrinsic part of the Rocco family life. Their generosities are exercised routinely and abundantly, just ask anyone in the Nazareth community and you will hear heartwarming stories of how they share their time, talent and treasures. Mankie Rocco states “Ron, Nick ’06, Dominic ’08 and I feel that sharing is not an option but a responsibility.” The ways they have shared with Nazareth are endless and encompass every opportunity of gifting as well as across both generations. Nick and Dominic give an incredible amount of time and talent as coaches for the varsity boys basketball team. The family has given to The Annual Fund,

Capital Campaign, Fine Arts Program, Memorial Gifts and Legacy Garden, Father’s Club, Auction, Wheeler Golf Outing, Fashion Show, Walk, Boosters, Named Scholarship Program, Relay for Life, FISH Prom, and the boys Basketball program. And who among us hasn’t received a “Goodie Bag” from Rocco and Rocco Salon! They are humble and genuine about their sharing and quite emotional about returns (although they expect nothing)! “Nazareth promised that they would educate Nick and Dominic and provide them with a solid foun-dation that was rooted in scholarship, service, spirit and unity,” said Ron. “My boys received all that was promised and their well-being, safety and happiness was an added bonus.”

The Roccos’ generous spirit is like a mountain spring of goodness. They praise “their girls” (the staff at Rocco and Rocco Salon in downtown Downers Grove) for jumping aboard their causes. As Mankie states, “our employees are my best friends and they do not hesitate to give back.” Many of the staff members are also alumni of Nazareth and have spent countless hours doing hair and make-up for the plays, fashion show and most recently the Nazareth FISH Prom. The staff also supports Mankie and Ron’s benevolent efforts for other causes outside of Nazareth, such as the DuPage Homeless Shelter, and a gift to the Congregation of St. Joseph in the Rocco’s name at Christmas Mankie and Ron credit their giving spirit to both sets of parents. With limited resources their parents were constantly demonstrating their kindness in modest ways, making a meal for a grieving friend or spending time with a sick relative. “It doesn’t take a penny to help someone in need...acts of kindness just happen when you respond with your instinct” said Mankie. “The reward is as simple as a smile and the knowledge that you can make life better for someone.” The Roccos continue to give to Nazareth well after their boys have graduated. “I have met some of the most wonderful friends at Nazareth,” Ron says “people who are always there for us, so it gives me great joy in continuing to give back and touch people in so many ways.” They say a smile is infectious...you should see the smile on the faces of Ron, Mankie, Nick and Dominic!

students and a chaperone on retreats. These were times when hearts could be touched and shaped; times when lives could really be changed. This is an awesome responsibility, but the most important work of all. The giving and receiving of gifts flowed back and forth for me. As I was sharing time, knowledge and experiences with students, I was receiving gifts of a deeper understanding of myself and my place in God’s creative process. I was blessed to work with very talented and committed teachers and staff at Nazareth. They were wonderful friends and remarkable mentors. I have drawn on those experiences for years in teaching students ranging from high school to early childhood. I am still in touch with many of my former colleagues, and they continue to bless my life with their

sincere friendship. I always felt I was receiving so much more than I could ever imagine or give back in return. In recent years, and in a continuing effort to remain close to and contribute to the Nazareth “Family,” I have participated in various alumni activities. The initiative to retain contact with alumni who can contribute to the mission of Nazareth by carrying forward their positive experiences has flourished over the years right along with the school. Through alumni efforts, Nazareth has provided volun-teers to worthwhile charitable organizations. Nazareth alumni have contributed as volun-teers to Mission Outreach, an organization that provides donated medical supplies to healthcare providers around the world. Alumni have also provided labor and support

to ABLE Families in rural West Virginia helping them provide high-quality educational programs for impoverished families. The last-ing friendships that are created when alumni work side-by-side to improve the health and well-being of others are gifts that flow from these volunteer experiences. We clearly gain much more in helping others than we ever feel we give. Because of its mission to educate the whole student, challenging the mind, heart and spirit, Nazareth will always remain a place where you will receive far more than you ever attempt to give. Even after graduation, Nazareth calls us to share our time and talents with those around us to make our world a better place and ourselves better individuals.

Why do Carol and Dan Pelino give so generously to Nazareth? According to Carol, Kathryn ’10 and Megan ’11 enjoyed their Nazareth experience. Both girls not only received a great education but Nazareth helped develop and fine-tune their leadership skills. “By educating the whole person, our girls were given confidence to pursue their dreams at the college level,” said Carol. Kathryn is a sophomore at the University of Michigan pursuing a Sociology degree and involved in philan-thropic projects through Alpha Chi Omega. Megan a freshman at University of Notre Dame is in the Pre-Professional Science program and a coach for the ND Special Olympics soccer team. Dan and Carol are blessed and honored to be a part of the Nazareth community. The school has opened their eyes to the mission of the Congregation of St. Joseph. “The pillars of scholarship, service, spirit and unity are concrete and strong and we want to align ourselves with these values. As a family, it is important to make a difference in life. We do that by giving back to those who touch us, so we choose Nazareth!”

As a parent you want the best for your children. Having them reach their potential and be successful brings great joy. Of course, every parent has a different interpretation of what that success can be for their children. For Ann and Thom Serafin, successful children have a deep sense of community and commit-ment to others. On any given Sunday, you can find the Serafins at St. Francis Xavier Parish either lecturing or ushering. They are active partici-pants in the SFX Habitat trip to Clarksdale, Mississippi. Ann is on the Sunshine Committee for the LaGrange Newcomers where she cooks meals for neighbors in need. Thom is on the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce Board and a past board member of the LaGrange Park Little League. Ann and Thom are prodigious models for Mitchell ’10 and Matthew ’13. Mitchell is a sophomore at the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University, has joined a Habitat group in Evanston and volun-teers to feed the poor. Matthew is involved in the Nazareth FISH Program, Model UN, Roadrunner Club, Youth Initiative, the Announcer, Liturgy Planning Team, and will be a Kairos leader next year.

In addition to the many ways the Serafin family gives back to their parish and commu-nity, they also give generously to Nazareth. They are ardent donors to the auction, parent pledge, athletic department, and Kairos and theater programs. Why is Nazareth the benefi-ciary of their generosity? “We are grateful to Nazareth. They have provided Mitchell and Matthew an excellent education and validated for them the lessons on community and service we initiated at home” said Ann. “In educating the whole student, Nazareth provided a solid

moral foundation for our boys, something not found in other schools.” Ann and Thom state that they have been blessed in many ways. They are grateful for the lessons passed down to them from their own parents, those same strong models of community and success. “My mom always said ‘One person can’t change the world but you can change the neighborhood,’ ” said Thom. “You model what you know...we grew up helping those around us.”

Did you know the Fathers Club has raised over $1,000,000 for Nazareth Academy? Since the Fathers Club was organized

in 2003, its mission has been to promote the highest values of our school, to inspire fellowship, and to raise funds for bereavement and need based scholarships which assist Nazareth families and students directly. Our most recent event, the NCAA Championship Game at Edgewood Valley CC was a rousing success. Nearly 100 Nazareth dads, Fathers Club alumni, and incoming freshman fathers were treated to a special evening with great food and camaraderie, outstanding cash and raffle prizes, and the opportunity to rub shoulders with Nazareth faculty, coaches, and our President, Dennis Moran. All dads are welcome to join the Fathers Club and annual dues ($85) are applied to parent pledges. There is no need to attend meetings or sign-up for committees, but all dads are encouraged to participate in these annual events. The feeling of giving back to Nazareth is exceptional and...the reward is in the arena of fun and games!

Over the past ten years, Nazareth Academy has seen its share of facilities growth in keeping with rising demands for enrollment. From its state of the art audito-rium and its recently added Chemistry lab, to an accommodating dining hall, a beautiful library, and much more, Nazareth students reap the benefits of the generosity of count-less benefactors over the past decade. There is little doubt the surge in the Roadrunners athletic prominence over that same period can be attributed to the comple-tion of the RJ Sanders Baseball Field and Valenta Stadium on the north side of the campus. The next phase of this facilities plan will underscore the commitment Nazareth maintains to athletics and educating the whole person. With the summer 2012 completion of the new softball field and tennis courts Nazareth Academy will stand poised to welcome generations of students to a campus complete with academic and athletic facilities of the highest quality.

Nazareth Academy Announces Athletic Facilities Expansion

Nazareth remains committed to educat-ing the whole person and recently approved expansion of athletic facilities which will complement the school’s mission in remark-able ways. Every student at Nazareth Academy will benefit from recently announced plans to build a multi-purpose softball field, five tennis courts, and added parking on the school’s 22 acre campus. Nazareth will begin construction of these facilities in May 2012 with final completion slated for summer 2012. Students enrolled in the school begin-ning with the 2012-13 school year will all benefit from this expansion. These newly constructed facilities will occupy space along the school’s west and northwest boundaries, only steps from the school’s entrance, locker rooms, and parking lots. When added, these will round out on-campus athletic facilities for nearly every competitive sport in which Nazareth Academy participates in the prestigious East Suburban Catholic Conference. In addition, this will provide added facilities in which students can participate in physical educa-tion classes and intramural activities during and after school hours. Included in these plans are a softball diamond with an artificial playing surface to accommodate all levels of the school’s softball program, as well as intramural clubs, physical education classes, and even the band and pom and dance organizations. Permanent dugouts and fencing as well as a lighted scoreboard will create an enviable venue for Roadrunner athletes right on campus. In close proximity north of the softball stadium, Nazareth will construct five com-petitive tennis courts. These, too, will fulfill a number of student needs in addition to becoming home to the Roadrunner champi-onship tennis programs. The school will add parking spaces adja-cent to the softball diamond, increasing the already ample availability of safe and secure parking on campus for students and visitors.

Eleven Nazareth Academy students will have the opportunity to travel to New Orleans this June to participate in a service trip with students from Saint Joseph’s Academy in Baton Rouge. Together, the students will be able to meet some of the people in the area who are still feeling the affects of Hurricane Katrina. They are looking forward to helping the local service organizations in whatever ways are most needed. Some of the options include working with Habitat for Humanity, serving in food pantries and tutoring children. This trip is being made possible in part due to a Generous Promises Grant from The Congregation of Saint Joseph. Nazareth Social Studies teacher, Anthony Gonzalez and Principal, Deborah Tracy will be joining the students on the trip. They look forward to joining with Sister Jackie Schmitz, CSJ who will also be taking part in the efforts.

This July Nazareth Academy will again send a group of faculty and students to Solsberry Hill, Indiana to fulfill the essential pillar of service. This is the seventh Habitat trip for our students who will work and live with Bridget and Connor McIntyre. The McIntyre’s coordinate Habitat projects within rural Monroe County on their farm/retreat center which is located 15 minutes from Bloomington. Our students incorporate prayer into their daily life and are taught to understand the connection between making a difference with Habitat and how that action fits into the gospel. “The McIntyre’s offer a laid back lifestyle and promote simple living,” said Joe Wejman, Nazareth Social Studies teacher and six year adult leader. “Our kids witness extreme poverty and get to understand the struggles others endure daily.” All come back with a sense of pride, knowing they made a difference in someone’s life. The true gift for Mr. Wejman, is getting to know the students on a deeper level. “As an educator it is important to be a mentor and I am lucky to share their experiences during nightly reflections.” This year Joe, Anthony Gonzalez (Social Studies teacher), Kate Augustyn (English) and Laurie Stanton (Religion) will take 24 students.

Circle the City

Solsberry Hill Habitat

The senior class of Nazareth will Circle the City of Chicago on May 17th. In its eleventh year, this senior project sends forth the graduating class to provide one last opportunity to feel connected with our service mission. The seniors are offered a variety of opportunities, such as working at addiction centers, helping senior citizens, environmental clean-up, aiding handicapped adults and children, or working at food pantries. The project is rooted in the words of Sr. Kathy Sherman’s song of the same title and a collaborative effort with the Congregation of Saint Joseph, our sponsors. The 199 member Class of 2012 enthu-siastically “Circle the City with love, it’s time we showed the way, feed the hungry, heal the hurts, build bridges that unite...”!

Last summer a group of Naz alum and faculty traveled to Kermit, West Virginia to help build a playground for youngsters who participate in the programs offered by ABLE families. This is a Catholic non-profit agency in Appalachia that addresses the systemic causes of poverty by providing local low-income families with the tools they need to work their way out of poverty. They do that through high-quality educa-tional programs. These include in-home family education for maternal and infant health, afterschool, summer camps, nutrition education, and adult education. The current program director is a Naz alum, Sr. Patricia Ann Murray ’80 and a member of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart. This year we are hoping to gather a group to help with medical screenings (blood pressure, diabetes, etc.), exercise/dance classes for moms and young women, and assistance in upkeep/repair for local residents (no special skills needed). We are planning the trip for June 11th– 16th or June 18th–23rd. For further infor- mation please contact Debbie Soldato ’72 312-590-2997 or [email protected] to hear from you!
