We are a melting pot of cultural diversity. For the past year I have been teaching an under-graduate liberal arts class called “Music and the American Identity.” It is an exploration of our current concepts of “American” music and its complex and amazing mix of cultural traditions. The course engages with the folk music of several continents and its in�luence on 20th century musical forms such as jazz, country, rock and the blues. Through this close contact over generations, new, authentic American sounds have emerged.

Music and American Identity

When Antonin Dvorak came to live in America between 1892 and 1895 he was outspoken about the need for the classical music of America to draw from the indigenous music of lower- and middle-class peoples. He predicted that it would be to African-American music that composers would eventually turn, and in a way he was right. When Dvorak composed his String Quartet op. 96, he was throwing down the gauntlet to a new generation of composers. Dvorak was showing them how a foreign composer from Bohemia could, in just a few years of listening, absorb the American soundscape into his compositional technique.

Our 2012 season seeks to explore how that challenge has been met by subsequent generations of American composers. Each work you will hear this season will be one answer to the question of what sounds “American.” Ragtime, jazz, the blues, folk music and rock has each had some impact on something you will hear at one of our concerts.

As in previous CVCMF seasons, you will hear familiar names paired with less familiar or unknown composers. All of these composers deserve an enthusiastic listen, since they are our voices. The expansive prairie, the urban night club, nostalgia for days past and the hope for a better tomor-row are all in these voices. When you attend our concerts this season you will come away with a better understanding of how American music in the 20th century manifests the idea of E pluribus unum... out of many, one.

Community OutreachCVCMF “On Call”

Enrichment and educa-tion are at the center of CVCMF’s ongoing mission to build new audiences for classical music. The 2012 season extends our traditional daylong outreach residencies into an entire week of events. Breaking up into small groups, CVCMF musicians will be working along side area hospitals, retirement communities, youth programs, farmers markets, and other community organizations to bring our music into the public forum. CVCMF musicians come from all around North America and this project is motivated simply by our desire to perform, teach, and converse with as much of our community as possible during our ten day festival. Check our website throughout the summer to see where and when CVCMF “On Call” will be performing for groups in your area.

Silent �ilms were often set to live music and, with a renewed interest in this genre, many composers are recreating the sounds and ambiance of that era. Join us as we accompany two comedic classics of Americana by slapstick artists Harry Langdon and Buster Keaton.

Written during Dvorak’s Spillville period, we use his quartet masterwork as a springboard that launches our program through the 20th century looking at how American folk and popular music in�luenced a new generation of composers to follow.

Chamber music based on popular songs and dances of the 20th century drives this concert. Everything from ragtime and jazz, to rock music underlies these works. Including some of the most well cherished American voices of the 20th Century, this is a concert that will have downtown Waterloo swingin.
