3 ARTS Oil City Profiled in PA Chamber Magazine While traveling throughout the western part of the state a couple of months ago, Alex Halper, manager of Governmental Affairs and Lesley Smith, Director of Communications, both of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, stopped by to have lunch in downtown Oil City with
Chamber Director Susan Williams. Alex and Leslie were impressed by the efforts made in Oil City to grow the arts community and suggested that the story was one worth sharing. Joann Wheeler provided the basis for the story. Susan snapped the picture and interviewed several of the Transit Studio artists for a featured article in the latest issue of Catalyst, the bi-monthly magazine of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry. Read about how the ARTS Oil City program is helping to redevelop the once-vibrant northwest town through its investment in artist relocation and downtown development on the chamber’s website at www.venangochamber.org.

Business Leaders, Chambers of Commerce Converge at Capitol for 2012 Chamber Day HARRISBURG, PA – The Venango Area Chamber of Commerce recently traveled to the state Capitol to participate in the 2012 Chamber Day, an annual event hosted by the Pennsylvania Association of Chamber Professionals in partnership with the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry. Held Tuesday, June 5, the day-long event offered representatives from more than 29 local chambers of commerce throughout the Commonwealth and their members the opportunity to meet with key policymakers, network with other chamber professionals, and attend policy discussions on issues that impact the business community.
“Chambers of Commerce play a critical role in communicating the needs of business to our legislators. We heard that message repeatedly on our trip to Harrisburg.” said Executive Director Susan Williams.
The agenda kicked off with a legislative breakfast at the state Capitol, where Senate Majority Leader, Dominic Pileggi, R-Delaware, offered opening remarks. Later, at the PA Chamber’s offices, PA Chamber President, Gene Barr, addressed attendees at a pre-lunch discussion that focused on the importance of local chamber support in strengthening business advocacy efforts.
Lt. Gov. James Cawley was the special guest at a luncheon meeting sponsored by APPI Energy. Cawley highlighted the Corbett administration’s commitment to job creation and fiscal discipline.
The day concluded with a series of issue sessions on topics ranging from labor policy to transportation, environment to energy and how Pennsylvania’s perceived business climate impacts its competitiveness.
The event was sponsored by Constellation, an Exelon company.

Free Lunch Program Provided by Child Development Centers Child Development Centers (CDC) will offer a free lunch program for children and teenagers again this summer at several local churches, schools, and other sites.
CDC has operated the program the past three years in as many as three locations, but this year will serve lunches at five sites, including two churches that were part of Oil City Area School District’s former summer lunch program.
If you are interested in supporting the summer lunch program; cash contributions are welcome, and these will be used to buy additional equipment or supplies. Also needed are a number of new or gently-used roaster ovens and supplies (paper products, etc.) for the various meal sites.
CDC still is recruiting churches and non-profit organizations to become sites this summer for the free lunch program. Any church or organizations that may want to take part can learn more by calling Mrs. Nerlich at CDC, 814-437-7288. Read the complete article in the chamber’s news items at www.venangochamber.org

Land of Laughter Work Session Held
The Venango Area has the good fortune of having many community playgrounds, notably several that were built by volunteers from the community. Those who have participated in one of these local “barn raisings” know what an accomplishment they are. But now, years later, the maintenance of such parks falls on the municipalities. This past month, one of the playgrounds received a much needed facelift, once again through a volunteer effort. Mitchell Avenue Playground now boasts many pieces of rebuilt equipment and a general clean-up of the entire park. Community members, local contractor, workers for the Oil City Area
School District and the City of Oil City worked together to complete the work. Funding for the project came from the Land of Laughter Fund of the Bridge Builders Community Foundations. Local contractor John Deemer coordinated the effort. John reported a long list of accomplishments from the work session but reminds us that there is more to be done. If you are willing to volunteer your time, or that of your business or organization, contact John Deemer at (814)-677-6740.

Governor Corbett Signs Unemployment Compensation Reform Into Law
Harrisburg - Governor Tom Corbett has signed Senate Bill 1310, a reform bill that modernizes Pennsylvania's Unemployment Compensation, or UC, law.
The new law enables Pennsylvania to repay a nearly $4 billion UC Trust Fund debt to the federal government. Pennsylvania was one of 36 states that borrowed from the federal government to keep UC benefits flowing during the recession. The measure also updates certain aspects of the state's UC law, including some relating to benefits and eligibility that had been neglected for nearly 40 years.
"Unemployment compensation reform equals jobs -- it's that simple," Corbett said. "The new UC law repays the state's debt, restores the fund's solvency, does not raise taxes and enables Pennsylvania to be competitive while still providing the UC safety net to unemployed Pennsylvanians," he added.
Specifically, Corbett said the new law will:
Refinance the UC Trust Fund debt by issuing bonds at a low, fixed rate.
Reform employer taxes by increasing the taxable wage base from $8,000 to $10,000 and lowering the State Adjustment Factor.
Modernize benefit eligibility by increasing the base-year wage requirement from an average of 37 percent outside the high quarter to at least 49.5 percent. This change will not affect any current claimants, and will affect less than 10 percent of all claimants when the law goes into effect in January 2013.
Use 5 percent of employee taxes collected to establish a Re-employment Fund for training initiatives to help jobless Pennsylvanians return to work.
State Representative Scott Hutchinson voted in favor of Senate Bill 1310.

Amazing Stitches Joins the Chamber
We are happy to welcome Dixie Gordon and her son Kurt Corah at Amazing Stitches to the Chamber community!
Amazing Stitches has been in operation in Emlenton for eleven years. While eight of those years were spent operating out of Dixie’s basement, the business was moved to 613 Main Street in Emlenton in November 2009. Gordon, who began sewing when she was six years old, says that the business started as “just something to do in retirement.” Little did she know the business would take off and be a full time job!
In Dixie’s own words, “I attempt to do almost anything somebody brings to me!” When asked about her busi-ness philosophy, Gordon says, “Like it says on our website, our goal is simple, we take your ideas and make them what you want them to be. When someone comes through the door, we want them to feel happy. We’re here to serve them.”
To this end, Amazing Stitches offers a range of services including embroidery, industrial sewing, alterations, screen printing, direct to garment printing, and vinyl services. In house, Gordon has a single head embroidery machine, a four head dual function embroidery machine, a direct to garment printer, a complete screen printing shop, three industrial sewing machines, and a vinyl cutting machine to help your embroidery and screen print-ing dreams come true. If you wish to order apparel to be embroidered or printed on, Gordon regularly works with nine different vendors to get you the best price and product. In other exciting news, the Emlenton location owned by Gordon (609-611 Main St.) is now going through some remodeling. When we spoke with her, Gordon hoped to be all moved in by July 1st. As part of the remodeling, Amazing Stitches has a brand new logo and sign, if you are in the area make sure to stop by and check it out.
Of the remodeling, Gordon says, “Things are really exciting right now; there is so much going on!” Gordon is “extremely appreciative of the local business and the local support that we have here in Emlenton.” Amazing Stitches is open from 10am – 6pm daily to walk-ins or by appointment. To contact Amazing Stitches you can call the shop at (724) 867-0880 or email Dixie at [email protected]. You can also visit their website at www.amazingstitches.net.

Welcome Interns!
Each year Venango County welcomes a fresh batch of summer interns and work-study students to the area from colleges all across Pennsylvania. While you as employers certainly benefit from these bright students, the community benefits in countless ways as well. So, once again the Venango Area Chamber and FLEX (Future Leaders' and Entrepreneurs' Exchange) are planning the 3rd Annual Intern Appreciation Luncheon to say thank you to our interns and show our appreciation for their decision to come back and work in Venango County.
This year we would also like to extend a warm welcome to interns to our Business After Hours Mixer at Hi-Level Golf Course on July 11th from 5-7 PM. These events are great opportunities not only for us to meet and welcome interns but also for the interns to meet other young professionals and get connected with FLEX, our young professionals group. Interns are invited to come early, bring their clubs, and play a round of golf with a cart for only $10!
The 3rd Annual Intern Appreciation Luncheon will be held Thursday, August 2nd at Wanango Golf Club from noon to 1:30pm. Once again, this is our opportunity to show our gratitude to area interns. We'd like to remind you that there is no cost to your business or your interns to attend either of these events! More information and flyers for both of these events can be found in this newsletter. Please don't hesitate to contact Katie Ragon at the Chamber (676.8521 I [email protected]) or FLEX member Jessica Nel-son (676.0613 I [email protected]) if you have any questions or concerns.
Chamber Members Serve with Appalachia Service Project
Last month several Chamber members and volunteers traveled to Johnson City, Tennessee to volunteer a week of their time serving with Appalachia Service Project. ASP is a service organization dedi-cated to making homes in Central Appalachia (West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Tennessee) warmer, safer, and drier.
This year, 26 volunteers from four area churches – First Presbyte-rian, Second Presbyterian, Trinity United Methodist, and St. Joseph – repaired four different homes throughout the week. The projects they worked on included building and repairing porches, replacing a floor, reframing and replacing windows, replacing doors, and reseal-ing the roof of a trailer home.
This was the 12th year that First Presbyterian of Oil City has sent a group of volunteers to work with ASP. We are proud to note that several local businesses including H&R Block, Culligan of Oil City, and Caldwell Printing Services donated both time and resources to make this year’s trip a huge success! If you would like to learn more about ASP you can visit www.asphome.org or contact Patty Feroz at (814) 677-3051.
