WELCOME TO THE 2012 NSF S-STEM PROJECTS MEETING

On behalf of the National Science Foundation, we welcome you to the 2012 NSF S-STEM Projects Meeting hosted by the American Society for Engineering Education at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, VA.

The NSF S-STEM program makes grants to institutions of higher education to support scholarships for academically talented students demonstrating financial need, enabling them to enter the STEM workforce or STEM graduate school following completion of an associate, baccalaureate, or graduate-level degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics disciplines. The program emphasizes comprehensive approaches that integrate recruitment, academic support, mentoring, and facilitated career placement.

While meetings of project teams have been regularly held in other NSF programs, only one analogous meeting has been held in the S-STEM program (in 2003 when the program was named CSEMS). As S-STEM PIs and team members, you are encouraged to use this meeting to network with colleagues who have or are experiencing similar challenges and opportunities to the ones you face as you implement your S-STEM grant. A summary of the results of the meeting sessions, especially the results of the discussions during the breakout sessions, will be compiled and collated with distillation of key lessons learned.

We hope the accommodations at the Crystal Gateway Marriott, along with many attractions of the nation’s capital will enhance your enjoyment of this event. We look forward to spending time with each of you and trust that you will find the meeting to be an energizing and rewarding experience.

SINCERELY,

Her works have been published in BlueInk, an annual Marymount University anthology for the past 3 years. Her summer research projects have ranged from mycorrhizae to computational modeling of the spread of toxoplasmosis. Currently, she is working on her Honors thesis which focuses on lupus. After graduating, she plans to attend medical school. Her major career goals are to find the cure to lupus and promote cultural diversity in the workforce. In her spare time, Cyndi likes to read novels, write poetry, and travel with her family.
