RED RAIDER SOCCER - 2012 WELCOME

T hroughout his five-year tenure at Texas Tech, head coach Tom Stone has constructed the distinct brand of Texas Tech soccer. It’s a carefully crafted identity now clearly visible each fall weekend as

thousands of Red Raider fans flock to the the John Walker Soccer Complex and bring to life one of the unique atmospheres in college athletics. After averaging just 349 fans per contest before Stone arrived in Lubbock, the John Walker Soc-cer Complex has emerged as a national leader in attendance. Texas Tech ranked No. 13 in the country in home attendance during the 2011 season averaging 1,332 fans per contest. Meanwhile, the Red Raiders broke the single-game attendance record twice in 2011 en route to the 12 percent increase in average single-game attendance in just one year. Through the combination of building a successful program, one that matched its best Big 12 finish in school history in 2011, with a thrilling style of play - Texas Tech soccer has emerged into a powerful program on the South Plains. The true brand of Tech soccer has been cemented in its suffocating defense. The Red Raiders have established themselves as one of the top defenses in the Big 12 Conference and maintained that reputation by totaling 10 shutouts during the 2011 season. Tech tied for second in the Big 12 with just

18 goals allowed through 20 games last year - the total also tied for the fewest in school history. In the five years of Stone’s tenure, the Red Raiders have reduced opponents’ shots-on-goal by over 33 percent while also reducing goals-per-game by over 42 percent. The stifling 2011 Texas Tech defense was anchored by four-time Big 12 Player of the Week re-cipient Victoria Esson. Esson, who transferred from New Zealand prior to the start of the 2011 season, recorded a total of seven shutouts through 14 starts in front of the net. It marked the second most shutouts in a single season by a Tech goalie in school history and her four Big 12 Player of the Week awards set a new Big 12 record. Meanwhile, Texas Tech has proven its offense can exploade at any time. The Red Raiders twice scored five goals in a single match last season, shutting out Arizona State 5-0 on the road before de-feating Northern Arizona by the same score at the John Walker Soccer Complex a week later. The combination of a suffocating defense with an explosive offense has given the Red Raiders a unique and intimidating identity throughout both the Big 12 Conference and the nation – and it’s a brand of soccer played in one of the most intimidating atmospheres in the game.

Fans and Media, On behalf of the entire Texas Tech soccer team and staff, I would like to personally welcome you to our home at the John Walker Soccer Complex on the beautiful campus of Texas Tech University. We are extremely grateful and excited about your support and coverage of our team as we look forward to an in-credible opportunity during the 2012 season. The 2012 season provides our program yet another exciting chance to take a step forward both in the ultra-competitive Big 12 Conference as well as the national stage. We took significant strides in 2011, tying for the best Big 12 finish in school history (4th), defeating Texas for the first time since the 1999 season and Missouri for the first time since 2007 while ranking No. 13 nationally in home attendance. Now, with 19 returning letterwinners and a freshman class that features an exciting blend of speed and athletic ability, we are poised to compete for a Big 12 Championship and a NCAA postseason play.

We can’t do this without the unbelievable support from the best fans in the country. You make the John Walker Soccer Complex not only one of the most fun places to watch a college soccer match, but also one of the toughest places for opponents to play. Again, we thank you for your support of our program and hope to see you this year as we host an exciting set of matches.

THE TEXAS TECH

ATMOSPHERE

One of the pristine facilities in all of college soccer, the John Walker Soccer Complex is home to one of the most exciting atmospheres in the nation. The state-of-the-art $5 million facility

was completed and dedicated prior to the 2008 season with a capacity of 1,500. In the short time since, it has steadily developed an identity and reputation feared by each opponent that steps onto its field. That reputation has been developed through a loyal fan base surrounding the Texas Tech soccer program. Last season, the Red Raiders ranked No. 13 nationally in average single-game attendance with 1,332 fans packing the stands for each home match - a testament to the immense growth of the program during the Tom Stone Era. But the ranking and average attendance isn’t just a number. The game day atmosphere in Lubbock begins well before the start of each home match in the fall. Fans have embraced Texas Tech soccer, and consistently flock to the John Walker Soccer complex hours before the match. Each Friday night, tailgates line the parking lot outside the state-of-the-art team facility in celebration and anticipation of the match ahead. The John Walker Soccer Complex is the only in the Big 12 to feature state-of-the-art Field Turf playing surface – allowing the Red Raiders to train under virtually any weather conditions while maintaining the pristine playing surface. The John B. Walker Soccer Complex features a 1,500-seat grandstand specifically designed to keep fans close to the action and a includes a soccer house outfitted with team locker rooms, athletic training facilities, coaches’ offices, coaches’ lounge, the Red Raider lounge (a public lounge), a team lounge equipped with a state-of-the art video system for film study, a team weight room and an Under Armour equipment room.

Players also enjoy a “boot room” located immediately inside the facility as a place dedicated to their Under Armour footwear. Construction of the soccer complex began in 2006 with the soccer pitch installed in time for the 2008 season and the rest of the facility completed in time for the 2009 campaign. The John B. Walker Soccer Complex was designed by Parkhill Smith and Cooper, and features an iron entry gate emblazoned with the Double T. The gate, designed by Lars Stanley Metalworks of Austin is part of the university’s award-winning public art collection.

What They’re Saying About The John Walker Soccer Complex“It’s very impressive. It’s ELECTRIC and just a great atmosphere.”

- Rob Verby/Sports Director Fox-34

“It’s a family atmosphere first and foremost, but it’s not kind to the visitors, especially on a Friday night when it’s almost ALWAYS A PACKED HOUSE. It has to be one of, if not the toughest, place to play in the Big 12.”

RED RAIDER SOCCER - 2012 JOHN WALKER SOCCER COMPLEX

If the atmosphere on the field isn’t impressive enough, the soccer house located adjacent to the pitch at the John Walker Soccer Complex proves to be one of the most impressive aspects of the

Texas Tech soccer program. Red Raider soccer players enjoy access to one of the most impressive players’ lounges in the country, which also doubles as one of the newest facilities on the Texas Tech campus. The facility, hyperfocused on the student-athlete, is complete with a large and comfort-able locker room, training facilities, coaches offices, coaches lounges, the upscale Red Raider Lounge, a spacious team lounge featuring a state-of-the-art video system, a team weight room, and an Under Armour equipment room. The complete facility gives the Red Raiders one of the most prestigious and upscale homes in all of college soccer. The multi-purpose facility has helped to build the entire program into a regular contender in the fiercely competitive Big 12 Conference, as it is regarded as one of the top team facilities in both the conference and the nation. Meanwhile, the John Walker Soccer Complex also provides the local media a modern press conference area complete with custom Texas Tech backdrops. Throughout the year, the Walker Complex houses offices for the Texas Tech soccer staff, giving coaches the convienence of working with the team onsite on a day-to-day basis while providing Red Raider student-athletes with a luxury facility to call home. In all, the John Walker Soccer Complex, completed less than five years ago, cements the deep commitment from the Texas Tech University community to its soccer program.

14TEXAS TECH SOCCER

RED RAIDER SOCCER - 2012 JOHN WALKER SOCCER COMPLEX

With its first season in 1994, the Texas Tech women’s soccer program is still young, yet the Red Raiders have wasted little time in establishing themselves as a one of the top soccer

programs both in the Big 12 and in the nation. Texas Tech joined the Big 12 Conference in 1996, and a commitment to excellence in the sport became evident with the hiring of head coach Tom Stone in 2007. Texas Tech received perhaps one of the most significant signs of commitment to excel-lence with the completion of the state-of-the-art John Walker Soccer Complex in 2009. With it, Texas Tech suddenly boasted one of the top facilities in both the Big 12 and the nation. It’s no surprise that with the improved facility and one of the top coaching staffs in place, the Red Raiders have risen to top of the Big 12 Conference, most recently finishing fourth in the elite league in 2011. Now, loaded with one of the top recruiting classes in school history along with a core of returners, the Red Raiders are primed to continue their march towards a Big 12 Championship and NCAA Tournament berth in 2012. The noise Tech has made on the national soccer scene has been heard in recent years as the Red Raiders were informed prior to the 2012 season that the NSCAA ‘College Game of the Week’ would broadcast their primetime match up with Oklahoma State live from the John Walker Soccer Complex on Fox Soccer Channel. With the selection as a host site for the NSCAA ‘College Game of the Week’, Texas Tech will have the opportunity to showcase the unique atmo-sphere that is a Friday night home match in Lubbock, along with everything that Texas Tech has to offer - and do so in front of a nationally televised audience. The selection as a site for the NSCAA/Fox Soccer ‘College Game of the Week’ is a

culmination of the steady building progress during the Tom Stone Era at Texas Tech. Yes, it’s clear that Texas Tech soccer is on the rise, and there has rarely been a moment more evident of that than right now as the 2012 season begins in Lubbock.

RED RAIDER SOCCER - 2012 TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY

Located on the South Plains in West Texas, Texas Tech University rests as a beacon of academic excellence. The prestine campus sprawls out over 1,800 acres boasting

one of the top research institutes in the country. Texas Tech operates as a major com-prehensive research institute, while also serving as a smaller liberal arts university. With its size, Tech has the ability to provide some of the best facilities, both academically and athletically in the nation. Yet with an enrollment of just over 30,000, the school still focuses on the individual student. Texas Tech is home to students from all 50 states and more than 90 foreign countries. Students come to the campus with the opportunity to pursue over 150 undergraduate programs from within 11 separate colleges. Texas Tech is also home to 100 master’s programs, 50 doctoral programs, a school of law and the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. Texas Tech is the only campus in the state of Texas that is home to a major university, law school and medical school. The City of Lubbock boasts a lively arts and music scene, featuring the De-pot District which comes alive nightly with local bands and restaurants to create a truly unique entertainment hotspot just a few miles from the Texas Tech campus. Meanwhile, the United Spirit Arena, a 15,000-seat state-of-the-art multi-purpose arena nicknamed the ‘The Entertainment Showcase of West Texas’, regularly attracts the biggest artists in music including Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, George Strait while also having hosted Pearl Jam, Elton John and more. Lubbock offers the convenience and luxury of a metropolitan city, while never

losing touch with its small-town culture. The city has a comfortable population of 229,573 and offers students of Texas Tech and local resi-dents one of the most attractive lifestyles in the state of Texas. Graduates from Texas Tech have governed three states, flown space missions and even won Olympic Gold Medals. With such a wealth of opportunities at Texas Tech, it’s easy to see why FROM HERE, IT’S POSSIBLE.

Carol of Lights To celebrate the holiday season Texas Tech holds an annual event called the Carol of Lights. The event starts off with the Texas Tech University Combined Choirs performing selections of classic holiday songs at the Science Quadrangle. When the lighting ceremony commences, Students as well as those who came for the show stand in awe as over 25,000 red, white, and orange lights illuminate the 13 buildings surrounding memorial circle.

This tradition started in 1959 when Harold Hinn came up with the idea and provided the funds to cover the science quadrangle and the administration building with lights. Unfortunately students were away on Christmas break and did not see the display. The next year the Residence Hall Associa-tion created the Christmas Sing, which is now known as the Carol of Lights. Today, the Carol of Lights is one of Texas Tech’s favorite traditions.

The Double-TThere is no other symbol more recognized with Texas Tech than the Double T symbol. Though no one has yet stepped forward to claim credit for its design, historical evidence points to Texas Tech’s first football coach E.Y. Freeland, who put the Double T logo on sweaters for the football players.

Guns UpThe “Guns Up” sign is the widely recognized greeting of one Red Raider to another. It is also the sign of victory displayed by the crowd at every athletic event. The sign is made by extend-ing the index finger outward while extending the thumb upward and tucking in the middle, little and fourth fingers to form a gun.

The sign can be traced back to L. Glenn Dippel, a 1961 alum-nus of Texas Tech. He and his wife Roxie were living in Austin

and faced the daily presence of the “Hook ‘em Horns” hand sign used by University of Texas fans. So, the Dippels decided to retaliate. They looked to mascot Raider Red and his raised guns for their inspiration and in 1971 developed the Guns Up hand symbol. The Saddle Tramps and Texas Tech cheerleaders immediately adopted Guns Up and a new tradition was born.

Masked RiderThe Masked Rider is the oldest and most popular mascot of Texas Tech University that still exists today. Originally the Masked Rider started as a dare in 1936 and was then called the ghost rider, because no one knew the rider’s identity. These ghost riders circled the field at home football games and then disappeared.

The Masked Rider did not become an official mascot until 1954, when Joe Kirk Fulton led the team out onto the field at the Gator Bowl. Fulton, wearing Levi’s, red shirt, a black cape and mounted on a black horse awed the crowd as the team made one of the most sensational entrances ever.

Today the Masked Rider, with his or her guns up, leads the team out onto the field for all of the home games. The Masked Rider is one of the most visible figures at Tech.

Saddle Tramps Formed by Tech student Arch Lamb in 1936, this all-male booster organization supports men’s athletics at Texas Tech. The name Saddle Tramp came from the stories of traveling men who would come to a farm for a brief time, fix up some things and move on. Lamb said he decided that he could fix up some things himself before moving on, and the Saddle Tramps were born. Since that time the Saddle Tramps believe if something was for the betterment of Texas Tech then they would work at it.These Midnight Raiders “paint the campus red” with crepe

paper before big home games, form the legendary “Bell Circle” moments before

kickoff, ring Bangin’ Bertha, participate in parades and other campus events (including the Carol of Lights), and ring the Victory Bells after Red Raider victories.

Victory Bells In 1936 victory bells were given to Texas Tech as a class gift. The bells rang for the first time at the 1936 class’s gradua-tion. It is said that after the win over TCU, the following year, the bells rang through out the night. The bells kept Lubbock residents up all night. Thereafter, the bell ringing was limited to 30 minutes. Saddle Tramps ring the bells after Texas Tech victories and during special occasions. The Victory Bells - one large and one small, which combine to weigh 1,200 pounds - hang in the east tower of the Administration Building.

Will Rogers and Soapsuds One of the most well known landmarks on campus is the statue of Will Rogers and his horse Soapsuds. This memorial was dedicated on February 16, 1950 by longtime friend of Rogers, Amon G. Carter. Carter believed Texas Tech was the perfect setting for the statue and that it would fit into the traditions and scenery of West Texas.

RED RAIDER SOCCER - 2012 2012 OUTLOOK

TEXAS TECH RETURNS CORE FOR 2012 SEASON Another step forward. Yes, the Red Raiders did just that

last year under the guidance of fifth-year head coach Tom Stone. Texas Tech ended another banner season in which they tied for the highest Big 12 finish in program history (4th), and qualified for their fifth-consecutive Big 12 Tournament. Now, loaded with a core of returners along with one of the top signing classes in school history, the Red Raiders are set to take another step forward in 2012. Texas Tech returns 18 players who saw action last season and accounted for 78 percent of the team’s minutes. The returning core includes All-Big 12 Second Team selection and unanimous All-Big 12 Newcomer Team selection Jaelene Hinkle along with All Big

12-Newcomer selection Victoria Esson in front of the net. Esson posted six shutouts in 2011 in front of the net in her first season with the squad. Offensively the Red Raiders return 70 percent of their scoring from the 2011 season. With that nucleous of talent ready to take the field again in 2012, Texas Tech will enter the 2012 season as one of the most experienced teams in the Big 12. The Red Raiders are coming off of an impressive show-ing during the 2012 spring season in which they went 4-0-1 and didn’t allow a single goal while earning wins over LSU, New Mexico and TCU. Tech is set to face New Mexico in an early season showdown at the John Walker Soccer Complex on Aug. 19 before traveling to face TCU, a new member of the Big 12 Conference, on Oct. 19.

2012 Schedule In keeping pace with the continued growth and national exposure of the Texas Tech soccer team during the Tom Stone Era, the Red Raiders have set out to compete in one of the most competitive schedules in program history. Texas Tech will host several marquee home matches, while also traveling to face some of the top teams in the nation – all while compet-ing in the new-look Big 12 Conference. In all, Tech faces nine teams who advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2011, seven of those matches will be played on the road. Texas Tech will host a total of nine home matches at the John Walker Soccer Complex, including a season-finale showdown with 2011 Big 12 Champions Oklahoma State. The Red Raiders will host New Mexico on August 19 to wrap up a two-match homestand to open the 2012 season. The Lobos have won back-to-back Mountain West Championships. Tech then hits the road to participate in the TCU Invitational before returning home to face Nevada on Aug. 31.

Perhaps the most challenge stretch follows as the Red Raiders hit the road for a five match road swing. The trip begins with back-to-back matches against SEC opponents. Tech faces ‘Ole Miss in Oxford on Sept. 2 before squaring off with Auburn on Sept. 8. Tech then heads west to face Long Beach State and Cal. State Fullerton on Sept. 14-16. Big 12 play will open on the road for Texas Tech in 2012 with a showdown against Big 12 newcomer West Virginia. The Mountaineers enter 2012 as the reigning back-to-back Big East Champions. After 19 days on the road, Tech will host New Mexico State on Sept. 23 before three consecutive home Big 12 matches against Oklahoma (Sept. 28), Iowa State (Sept. 30) and Baylor (Oct. 5) before hitting the road for a showdown with Texas in Austin on Oct. 12. Tech will face Francis Marion in its final non-conference home match of the season on Oct. 14 before its final road swing of the season in which the Red Raiders will travel to TCU (Oct. 19) and Kansas (Oct. 21). In their home finale, the Red Raiders will faceoff with reigning Big 12 Champion Oklahoma State at the John Walker Soccer Complex on Oct. 26 while hosting the NSCAA ‘College Game of the Week’ in front of a nationally televised audience on Fox Soccer Channel.

Goalkeepers The Red Raiders return All-Big 12 Newcomer selection Victoria Esson in front of the net for the 2012 season. Esson, transfer from New Zealand, had nothing short of a stellar soph-omore campaign for the Red Raiders posting seven shutouts, including an impressive three straight from Sept. 16-2, in 15 starts. Her seven shutouts ranks second in school history for a

single season behind Stephanie Carter’s eight shutouts during the 1995 campaign. Esson earned Big 12 Player of the Week on four occasions during the 2011 season - including a stretch of three straight weeks. In doing so, she became the first Big 12 player in history to win the award four times in a single season. Esson ranked in the top-five of three Big 12 defensive cat-egories following the 2011 season. Senior Alexis Braziel, redshirt junior Erin Wikelius along with sophomore Cassie Garcia return for the 2012 season to give the Red Raiders ample experience in front of the net. Freshman Lauren Watson will look to make an impact for the Red Raiders in 2012 as she was a first team All-State selec-tion out of The Woodlands High School.

Defense The Red Raiders had one of their best defenses in school history during the 2011 season, allowing just 18 goals while posting a school record 10 shutouts. The 18 goals tied for the fewest allowed in school history – matching the 1994 season in which Tech played a total of just 15 matches. On the backline, Tech returns the services of third-team All-American and unanimous All-Big 12 Newcomer selection Jaelene Hinkle along with sophomores Bridgett Jenkins and Taylor Narviaz . The three combined for 52 starts during the 2011 campaign and look to both have significant impacts dur-ing the 2012 season. Tech will welcome two defenders from its highly touted signing class including Meghan Mitchell at center-back and Bethany Hale at outside back.

Midfield The Red Raiders return an experienced core in the mid-field led by Jessica Disabella, Sarah Ellison and Haley Haagsma. Despite only starting in three matches last year, Disabella led the group in attacking with three goals and two assists in 2011 while Haagsma and Ellison each added one goal. Meanwhile Erin Innman also returns for the Red Raiders after appearing in all 20 contests during her freshman cam-paign in 2011. Tech will also look for production from their talented freshman class as Hannah Devine, Ashley Casey and Caity Heap will look to add production for the Red Raiders in 2012.

Forwards The Red Raiders return their leading scorer from 2011 in Jessica Fuston , who enters her junior season ranked No. 4 in career game-winning goals at Texas Tech with seven and tied for fifth in career goals with 19. Fuston netted three game-win-ners during the 2011 which ranks eighth all-time for a single season. Senior Dawn Ward will also be a cornerstone to the Texas Tech offense. Ward enters the 2012 campaign tied for fifth all-time in career goals (19) and eighth all-time in career-points (43). Looking to add production for the Red Raiders will be freshman Janine Beckie. The 5-foot-8 Littleton, Colo., native and graduate of Valor High School was named the Gatorade Colorado Player of the Year for the 2011-12 season.

ERA

The winningest coach in program history, Tom Stone enters his sixth season at the helm of

the Red Raiders as the 2012 season arrives. During his tenure in Lubbock, Stone has built the Texas Tech program into an annual contender in the Big 12 Conference most recently guiding the Red Raiders to their highest finish in school history. The Red Raiders finished fourth in 2011 in what is consistently regarded as one of the toughest conferences in the country.

During his five-year tenure in Lubbock, Stone has steadily built the program with a fou-dation of strong recruiting, annually bringing some of the top talent in the state and the

country to Lubbock. Stone has guided to Red Raiders to five consecutive Big 12 Tournament appearances during his tenure. Prior to his arrival the Red Raiders had failed to reach the conference tournament in three straight seasons. Not only has Stone built the Texas Tech program into a power on the field, but he has created an identity for the entire program - one that the Lubbock community has embraced. On Friday nights in the fall, thousands of fans flock to the John Walker Soccer Complex - one of the premier soccer facilities in the country. That embrace of the Texas Tech soccer program was never more evident than the 2011 season where a new standard for attendance was set. A total of 14,657 fans attended 11 home games to help Tech rank No. 13 in the na-tion for average home attendance. Twice during the campaign the Red Raiders broke single-game attendance marks with an announced crowd of 2,176 attending the final showdown with Texas A&M on Oct. 7, while 2,228 fans watched the Red Raiders take on Kansas on Oct. 14. Tech hosted a total of 3,520 fans during the final weekend of home matches last season, which included the thrilling double-overtime victory over Texas. The figure was a new stadium record for a weekend series. In all, the average single-game attendance has ballooned by 280 percent during the Tom Stone Era, increasing from an average of 349 per-game during the 2007 season to last year’s mark of 1,332. Two Red Raiders, senior Taylor Lytle and freshman Jaelene Hinkle, were selected to the NSCAA All-Region team fol-lowing the 2011 season. Both were All-Big 12 members, joining teammate Victoria Esson. Hinkle received a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 Newcomer team. Stone has amassed a 44-42-10 record in five seasons at Texas Tech for a .458 winning percentage, the best of any coach in program history.
