A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

f this were a football game and we were ending the first quarter, any spectator would have to admit that our team is not only in the lead, but impossible to beat. The amount of events, seminars, mixers, committee meetings, affiliate activities, general information and member

information is exhausting. Ours is definitely not a static organization. Our 10th Annual Expo at the Clearview Mall was once again a sell out, with a full compliment of businesses and the amount of attendees clearly indicates that our economy is on the upswing.

The Officers and Board (Varsity) of our Chamber have never been shy when it comes to new and innovative programs and events, and our Leadership Butler County Class and Butler County Young Professionals (Junior Varsity) followed suit with an impressive array of activities. The second annual “Polar Bear Plunge” at Moraine State Park was a sight to behold, as the ice was broken and the bravehearted proudly entered 30 degree water to achieve their goal. Perfectly coordinated, perfectly conducted and perfectly successful.

Our first and second string is very strong, but we also have a great number of interested players “on the bench” and in the “training camp”. It is through the diligence and involvement of an extremely active Board of Directors, an interested and informed membership, and a positive reputation and position in the community that we consistently have new involved professionals. I continue to be grateful for the interest and involvement exhibited by our “Past Presidents Advisory Council”; proof of how strong our organization remains. Add to these past leaders the Butler County Young Professionals and we have established a competent, well-informed and interested group of team players.

March will provide our membership with new opportunities to network (Spring Meet-N-Move, Mixer hosted by The New Baglier Mazda) and learn (Trio of Marcellus Shale Seminars conducted in cooperation with Butler County Community College and Penn State Extension, Sales training seminars hosted by Sandler Training, NexTier Bank and C.W.Howard Insurance). Our team is built on partnerships, collaborations and constant training and evolution. If it is in the best interest of Butler County, then it is in the best interest of our Chamber Team to lead these efforts.

April is the time to recognize and award your employees at our Employee Appreciation Luncheon as well as bringing non-member businesses into our chamber through our “Member - Guest” Breakfast and New Member Orientation. We once again partner with the PA CareerLink for a Jobs & Career Fair as well as continuing our “Breakfast Briefings” professional training. May brings us our Home and Garden Show in partnership with the Spring Garden Market, Human Resource Forum, and Chamber Mixer at the Butler Little Theatre. In June, our thoughts turn to golf, more educational seminars and the list goes on.

Each month provides a wide variety of events and opportunities to take advantage of your investment in our Chamber. I trust that all of you have received our brochure of events and activities for 2012 and that you noticed the large amount of company logos. Sponsorship indicates pride, interest and most importantly “confidence” in the Butler County Chamber of Commerce. I commend you on making our Chamber the strongest, most active, most highly respected, and most “evolutionary” business organization in the area.

The next three quarters of this 2012 game promise to be full of activity, innovation, education, networking, camaraderie and most importantly, fun and satisfaction with belonging to the best Chamber of Commerce in Western Pennsylvania.

Taste of Home Cooking School Show

Marcellus Shale Summit II & Expo Coming to Butler County

It is no secret this new natural gas find has begun to rejuvenate our ailing Butler County economy with jobs, equipment sales, financing and more. The Gift of Warmth

T he Oversight Committee for the Butler County Emergency Relief Initiative (BERI) is pleased to announce the receipt of $6,000 from the Butler PM Rotary Club. The mission of BERI is to complement existing agencies in meeting

essential needs of Butler County residents whose lives have been affected by a significant emergency. Individuals and families in our community continue to struggle to make ends meet. However, this very generous donation will help Butler County residents stay warm during these cold winter months.

From July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011, BERI provided $15,642 in assistance to approximately 151 households. The Utility Integrated Point of Contact at Center for Community Resources (CCR) fielded 4,663 calls for assistance and did intake on 1,250 unduplicated households. Of those households, 313 received direct assistance.

Overseen entirely by volunteers, with 100% of the funding raised going directly to client aid, the Emergency Relief Initiative continues to seek solutions and establish a network of resources. The Butler County Humane Society Hosts Its 6th Annual Fur Ball

G et ready to party for the animals at the Butler County Humane Society’s 6th annual signature gala Fur Ball at the Butler Country Club. They are expecting a sell-out crowd to support and celebrate the exceptional work done by

BCHS. This year, BCHS will be spotlighting ARMSTRONG for their production of Critter Corner each month. Critter Corner has proved to be an important matchmaking tool for the dogs and cats at BCHS and has helped place many animals in their fur-ever homes.

Guests will start their evening with a Yappy Hour followed by exceptional food, delightful desserts, and exciting auction items along with the company of the adorable, adoptable animals from BCHS. Ron Vodenichar will host a live auction with an incredible array of prizes and trips. The 6th Annual Fur Ball will take place on Saturday, April 28, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. at the Butler Country Club, 310 Country Club Road, Butler, PA 16002. CDC Annual Meeting March 30

T he Butler County CDC (Community Development Corporation) will hold its annual Membership Meeting on Friday, March 30th, 2012, at 7:30AM at the Butler Country Club. Keynote Speaker will be Carolyn Boser-

Newhouse, the Deputy Secretary of Innovation and Investment at the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED). Boser-Newhouse was appointed to the newly created position in January and brings over 20 years of private sector experience to the position which consolidates the Offices of Business Assistance, Technology Investment and Tourism, Marketing and Film, under a single Deputy Secretary with the goal of improving interagency communication and cross-collaboration within the department.

In addition the CDC will elect its officers for 2012 and recognize those businesses, governmental agencies and additional firms and individuals who have worked with the CDC throughout the past year to provide a business environment conducive to creating and retaining jobs in Butler County.

T his year’s Young Artist Competition sponsored by the Butler County Symphony Association at Swope Hall on the campus of Slippery Rock University on January 22 resulted in two winners. They are16-

year old pianist Hannah Che of Beaver and 17-year old violinist Andrew Percy of Lyndora. These two musicians will perform with the Butler County Symphony Orchestra on March 10, 2012, “A Night of Beginnings”.

The competition was open to any high school age musician within a 25-mile radius of Butler or any high school age musician in a PMEA District 5 school. Peggy McGuirk, Chairperson of the competition committee, said, “the judges had a difficult time picking only one winner because all of the musicians who competed were extremely talented.”

O n March 5, 6 and 7, 2012, the Butler County Chamber of Commerce is teaming up with Butler County Community College and Penn State Extension to offer a series of seminars designed to educate, inform

and connect. We hope to answer many of the questions surrounding Marcellus Shale issues and connect resources, which will provide opportunities in Butler County. All three seminars will be held at Founders Hall on the campus of Butler County Community College.

On Monday, March 5, 2012, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., we invite landowners to join us for Marcellus Shale updated overview and information session. The evening will begin with a summary by Jon Laughner from Penn State Extension (Marcellus Shale 201) and update, followed by a discussion of Water Quality studies by Mark Madden of Penn State University. Attorney William White will discuss leasing. The final presenter will be Bud Shuffstall from Northwest Savings Bank who will discuss estate planning. Attendees will have the opportunity to present their questions and concerns to the panel, and will receive helpful information including a reference guide. The cost is $10.00 per person and required reservations must be made through Penn State Extension at 724.287.4761. This seminar is sponsored in part by Northwest Savings Bank.

Tuesday, March 6, 2012, is designed for municipal officials. The dinner meeting will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and will touch upon Marcellus Shale updated current information as well as issues pertinent to government officials. Mel Bliss, Coordinator of the Public Safety Training Facility at BC3 will begin the evening. Attorney William White will present leasing issues followed by Water Quality study reports presented by Mark Madden from Penn State Extension. A representative of Governor Corbett will present impact fee legislation. Cost is $15.00 per person for non-sponsored municipal representatives. Reservations are required and can be made

“Marcellus Opportunities for Products & Services: How?’ On Wednesday, March 7, 2012, we invite businesses, suppliers, training entities, contractors, and industry representatives to participate in an informative lunch and mini business expo. From 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., area businesses will be updated by Jon Laughner from Penn State Extension on Marcellus Shale. Bob Garland; Senior Technical Advisor at Universal Well Services will present procedures. Financial Planning Options will be presented by Bob Shuffstall from Northwest Savings Bank and workforce development opportunities and Dr. Stephen Catt, Executive Director of Workforce Development at BC3, will discuss challenges. Businesses including industry representatives are encouraged to interface and network with industry representatives. They are encouraged to set up a display table with information on their operations and services. There will be time to network and visit the variety of businesses prior to and following the formal program. Cost is $10.00 lunch only or $100.00, which includes two lunches and one 6-ft. exhibitor table. Space is limited and will be assigned on a first come first serve basis. C elebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Butler Health System Foundation at its annual black tie fundraiser, the Crystal Ball. The St. Patrick’s Day Celebration will be held on Saturday, March 17 at the Pittsburgh Marriott North in Cranberry Township beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The evening will include a cocktail hour, a silent auction where participants can bid on a wide variety of items – from entertainment to sports memorabilia, a specialty basket auction, a wine paired sit-down dinner and specialty drinks, casino games and dancing.

“Given how quickly these tickets go, we really encourage those who want to attend to secure their tickets now,” says Kris Bowser, Development Specialist.
