The Butler County Chamber and the Butler County Master Gardeners are joining forces once again to host the 2012 Spring Garden Market & Home Show on Saturday, May 19, 2012. The committee is relocating the show to Alameda Park this year, to provide additional space for vendors and attendees. The facility will be transformed into a showcase of exhibitors geared to helping you welcome spring! Area businesses and organizations will be on hand to offer solutions and ideas for your home and business including home improvement and

landscaping, financial planning, personal care, and more. Sponsored by Eisler Landscapes and Kenmac Rentals & Sales (additional sponsors are welcome),

the event is from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. with specialty food items, crafts, landscaping materials, live plants and more available for purchase throughout the day. And, we encourage businesses participating to sell items.

ow more than ever since I started my Chamber career in 1987, is your investment in our organization as valuable. In tough economic times as well as in booming economic times, each business and organization in our area has to assure himself or herself that they maintain a connection to

the local, regional and national communities. Our chamber, founded in 1896, has proven that we do not build our success on what we promise to accomplish, but upon our solid history of service to the Butler County Business Community - Our Membership.

The high number of business activities, flyers and member news is proof that our “Leading Edge” remains “Cutting Edge” in the world of Chamber publications and in many respects in the world of regional business publications. Something for everyone…Diversification of events…Business Education…Networking…Friday Morning Coffee Club…Cooperative Partnerships…Affiliations with Butler Human Resources Association, Leadership Butler County, Slippery Rock Business Association, Butler Downtown and Butler County Young Professionals…past successes as well as current services and planning for the future. Our reputation is solid and proven.

I am so proud of what we have achieved already this year, and excited at the prospect of our future plans. The trio of Marcellus Shale Seminars was a sell out, giving each unique audience timely and targeted information. Sandler Business Training offers blue ribbon sales training to our membership in an affordable and professional environment. We want to be the information conduit for our membership to get to know our County Commissioner Candidates. While our Officers, Directors and Members continue to conduct, assist, sponsor and attend events, they are sometimes too busy to realize just how much of a success our Chamber is. More importantly we need to be proud of the impact we are making on our community and our region and how valuable Chamber membership is.

Very few organizations (non or for profit) are able to conduct such a wide array of social, educational, informational, legislative and cooperative business and community events and do them so well. Not only are we event and seminar packed, but also our image through our website and publications is consistently traditional as well as modern and up to date, a reflection of our past and current success. A large number of our services are offered at no charge to our members due to the numerous sponsors who have stepped forward, providing a wide variety of opportunities for promotion and networking. Once again, you are the facilitators of these efforts, both through your financial support and your involvement.

We have strengthened our affiliation with the Community Development Corporation of Butler County and the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau as our collective scope of interest and influence grows. Meet-N-Move luncheons with the Allegheny Valley, Zelienople Harmony Area, THE CHAMBER, Inc. and Armstrong County Chambers have broadened our members marketing territories. Joint events with the Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce and Young Professionals, Mercer County, Clarion, Franklin and Venango Area Chambers of Commerce provide additional avenues whereby our members can become exposed to a new audience of customers and hopefully suppliers.

We tweak and repeat proven events and services and never cease to experiment. By supporting us, you reassure the citizens of Butler County that the business community is not only thriving, but also concerned with our area’s future and how we can continue to shape it. If you live, work or play in Butler County, we are convinced that our reputation is reflective of our past and current success which in turn gives credibility to our future successes.

Member NewsButler Health System and The Ellwood

City Hospital Sign Management Agreement - Crystal Ball overwhelming success.

T he Boards of Trustees of the Ellwood City Hospital (ECH) and Butler Health System (BHS) announced that they have entered into a 5-year Management and Collaborative Initiatives Agreement. Under the

agreement, Ray Beck, ECH President & CEO, will become a member of the BHS executive team. Mr. Beck will continue to have primary responsibility for The Ellwood City Hospital. ECH will maintain its Board of Trustees and governance structure.

Ken DeFurio, BHS President & CEO, said, “The Board of Trustees at ECH decided that it wanted a strategic partner. ECH faces the same uncertain and difficult future that challenges Butler Memorial Hospital and all U.S. hospitals. After a period of due diligence, our organizations decided that there is an excellent cultural fit, and both organizations are committed to working together to improve upon existing foundations of high quality and solid financial performance. This is proof that in these turbulent times it is possible for independent community providers to come together, work collaboratively, and do it with mutual respect – all for the betterment of the communities they serve.”

The Butler County Chamber of Commerce congratulates both organizations for their insight and spirit of cooperation.

In other Hospital News, Butler Health System Foundation’s annual Crystal Ball was held Saturday March 17 at the

Pittsburgh Marriott North in Cranberry Twp. The capacity crowd of guests enjoyed a “St. Patrick’s Day” celebration and raised nearly $120,000. This year’s proceeds are being directed to fund vehicles and staffing to create access to healthcare services for those in our community who have little or no transportation. BHS Foundation staff, along with a group of committee volunteers plans the event. Vicki Hinterberger of the Butler Media Group was this year’s Committee Chair.

The “Women of Legacy Award” was presented to Sue Bennitt of Butler Township. Sue has contributed to many segments of the civic community and has served on the boards of directors for several organizations. She is currently serving as chair of the BC3 Foundation. She was a founder of the Butler County Day Care Center, now known as Butler County Children’s Center, and served as president of its board of directors. She was honored with the Butler County Chamber of Commerce Junior Distinguished Service Award in 1978.

The “Women of Legacy Award” honors those who have notably contributed to the health and well-being of the Butler county community through excellence in patient care, overcoming personal illness or crisis, or improving some aspect of our community’s health. Birding Festival scheduled to take flight in Foxburg

T he Seneca Rocks Audubon Society, Allegheny RiverStone Center for the Arts, and The Foxburg Inn Hotel will be hosting the “2012 Foxburg Birdfest” on Saturday and Sunday, May 5 & 6, 2012. On Saturday, there will be an 8:00 a.m. birding tour and lunch at the historic

RiverStone Estate, a 5:00 p.m. buffet dinner at the Allegheny Grille, followed by educational presentations and an 8:00 p.m. Owl Prowl at RiverStone.

Seneca Rocks Audubon Society member Michael R. Leahy will present grassland bird calls, and keynote speaker Jason Hill, BS, MS, PhD. candidate, will discuss his current research findings regarding population dynamics of grassland breeding sparrows and their relationship to grassland habitat created by reclaimed surface mines in PA.

On Sunday there were will be an 8:00 a.m. birding tour at the Mount Zion/Piney Tract Important Bird Area near Sligo, PA, which houses rare and unique grassland breeding sparrows. Birders staying at the Foxburg Inn Hotel will receive special lodging rates. Tickets will be sold for each event individually so you can mix and match which ones you would like to attend. Butler County Symphony Orchestra closes 63rd season April 14th

T he Butler County Symphony Orchestra will close the 63rd season at 7:30 p.m. on April 14, 2012, at the Butler Intermediate High School Auditorium. The theme for this season is “A Night Of…,” and this concert is focused on “A Night of Remembrance.” Guest conductor is Matthew

Kraemer.

The featured guest artist is saxophonist Aaron Patterson who was the Symphony Association’s Young Artist Winner in 2002. He will play Decruck’s Sonata in C# for Saxophone and Orchestra. The concert will open with Three Dances from Gayane by Aram Khachaturian: Sabre Dance, Lullaby, and Dance of the Young Maidens.

The orchestra will also play Titanic, a composition Peter Boyer wrote as he was fascinated with the crowd of passengers stranded on the deck of the ship as they were calmed by the playing of ragtime, waltzes and finally hymns. The concert will close with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, a suite inspired by the composer over Russian painter Vladimir Hartmann’s art exhibition in St. Petersburg in 1873. It was one of the most important pieces of Russian piano music, but now is more familiar in the orchestral version arranged by Ravel.

Reserved seat tickets for this concert can be purchased at the Butler County Symphony Association office, 259 South Main Street, Butler. Second “Luncheon for

Literacy” to be sponsored by The Rotary Club of

Butler April 22

T he Rotary Club of Butler will hold its second “Luncheon for Literacy” on Sunday, April 22, 2012, at Founder’s Hall on the campus of Butler County Community College in Butler, PA. The event is a

fundraiser benefitting the Adult Literacy Program at BC3. Doors open at 12:00 noon, with lunch served at 1:00 p.m.

Each table at the luncheon will be decorated in the theme of a different book. This year’s tables will include such readers’ favorites as “The Help,” “Water for Elephants,” Beatrix Potter’s “Peter Rabbit,” and “The Secret Life of Bees.” The event features a guest speaker, used book sale, silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, and a delicious lunch. Tickets are $20 and must be purchased by April 11, 2012.

If you would like to do more, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities. We need table decorators, underwriters to sponsor tables, silent auction items, used books for the book sale, and bakers to contribute cookies to our dessert table.

J oin the Butler Media Group for a free informational and educational discussion of Marcellus Shale Drilling and its impact on Butler County on Thursday, April 19, 2012, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Butler Days Inn

Conference Center.

The second installment of the Marcellus Shale Summit will provide Butler County citizens with a free, daylong event of education aimed to inform and connect them to Marcellus Shale. The Summit will specifically feature several authorities on the Marcellus Gas Shale play, including Professor of Geosciences at Penn State University Dr. Terry Engelder, Host of the American Entrepreneur Radio Show “Marcellus: The Economic Miracle” Ron Morris, The Lt. Governor’s Office, The Department of Environmental Protection, and other leading authorities and organizations. Numerous vendors will also be available to view throughout the day, as well as various panel discussions.

“As we progressively enter into the Marcellus play, the Butler Media Group realizes it’s our responsibility to keep our community informed,” said Kathy Gregory-Steiner, General Sales Manager. “It is our pleasure to again partner with XTO Energy and bring you the very latest information and updates concerning the Marcellus Region.”

In early 2008, Terry Engelder and Gary Lash, a geology professor at the State University of New York at Fredonia, surprised everyone with estimates that the Marcellus might contain more than 500 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. That volume of natural gas would be enough to supply the entire United States for about two years, and carry a value of about one trillion dollars.

The presence of this enormous volume of potentially recoverable gas in the eastern United States has a great economic significance, for everyone. However, the mining practices used have not come without controversy, as environmentalists lament the toll taken on the earth as well as the industrialization of previously zoned agriculture and forestlands.

Whether you are a Butler citizen, landowner, business or part of our local government, education is key to understanding the unique opportunities and challenges arising from Marcellus Shale. The potential for economic impact upon every business in our region is incalculable and will open doors for new ventures and opportunities.

This is a pure comedy — a fictional, farcical Paris-set yarn about a young painter, the real-life Jean-François Millet, who fakes his death to score fame and fortune.

TKids Day America Takes Place In Butler On May 12

Dedicated to Children’s Health, Safety & Environmental Awarenesshe 17th Annual “Kids Day America” is scheduled for Saturday, May 12, 2012, from 10:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (rain or shine) at the Butler Farm Show Grounds, Evans City Road, Butler, PA. As the coordinating sponsor

of this event, Care Chiropractic Center will be giving out information on crime prevention, healthy lifestyles, child safety and environmental awareness issues. This will be a fun-filled day with activities including ‘learning to build’ projects, hayrides, kids activities, inflatable slides, food, musical entertainment and much more.

Due to its popularity, the event will once again feature the 3rd Annual “Cruza for Kids” car cruise. “Cruza for Kids” is judged by the children at the event and is open to all classic cars, trucks and motorcycles. Registration is from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. with the event to follow from

11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Donations are requested and benefit the Moraine Trails Council Boy Scouts of America. Last year’s event attracted over 2,400 people and benefited the Autism Society of Butler County. Opportunities for tax deductible sponsorships exist at multiple levels to help support this county-wide event.

Kids Day America is a day dedicated to health, safety and environmental issues that affect individuals and our community as a whole. Mark your calendars and bring the family out to this fun and free community event!

Learn how to gain your prospects and clients trust and what your personal presence and body language is saying. Breakfast begins at 8:00 a.m. and workshop concludes at 10:30 a.m. The seminar will be held at NexTier Bank, 100 Moraine Pointe Plaza, Butler, PA 16001. May 24…What is Effective Communication?Extended DiSC Profile

On Thursday, May 24, 2012, after having completed your own personal DiSC profile assessment, you will learn not only your own personality traits but also how to identify DiSC traits in others. In addition, you will learn how you, your employees and customers make decisions as well as the “do’s” and “don’ts” of communication with each personality type. This extended workshop begins at 8:00 a.m. with breakfast and ends at 11:00 a.m. Each registrant will receive the online extended DiSC assessment. The workshop will be held at NexTier Bank, 100 Moraine Pointe Plaza, Butler PA 16001. Cost is only $75 for Chamber Members and $125 for non-Chamber members. Registration is required and seating is limited. Owners are encouraged to invite their management team for this interesting insight into effectively and equally managing a mixed bag of personalities.
