About the WWAC Symposium

Presented by the ISA Water/Wastewater Industries Division, in collaboration with the Florida Section of the AWWA (FSAWWA), the

Florida Water Environment Association (FWEA), and the Water Environment Federation (WEF) Automation and Info Tech

Committee, the 2012 ISA Water/ Wastewater and Automatic Controls Symposium helps professionals in the water and wastewater

industry understand how automatic control applications affect processing and distribution of water treatment. It also provides an

outstanding opportunity to gain valuable technical information and training.

Symposium Location, Size and Target Audience

Traditionally held in the Orlando area (Orlando, Florida, USA) during the first week of August, the symposium is a “niche event” that

caters specifically to the needs of automation professionals, technicians and engineers in the water and wastewater sectors. With a

typical attendance of 100-150 people each year, the ISA WWAC symposium routinely welcome attendees from USA, Canada, and

Mexico, as well as from abroad.

The symposium takes place in Orlando during the summer for many reasons. The state of Florida is an area with unique

water/wastewater challenges, hotels are plentiful and inexpensive, and there are many airline flight options to the Orlando area. Also,

with Walt Disney World, Universal Studios’ and Sea World right next door, the Orlando location provides attendees an opportunity to

bring along their families along for the trip. The symposium organizing committee sees value in our “niche format” because it allows

for a very focused, worthwhile event where all the participants get a chance to get to know each other.

History of the Symposium

The 2012 WWAC Symposium marks the seventh time that the symposium has been held with its current focus. In fact, the

symposium it has been an annual conference since 2007. The symposium organizing and program committees consist of a wide range

of dedicated individuals, from across the industry, who bring a mix of both seasoned experience and new ideas

The ISA Water and Wastewater Industries Division (WWID) is concerned with all aspects of instrumentation and automated-control

related to commercial and public systems associated with water and wastewater management. Membership in the WWID provides the

latest news and information relating to instrumentation and control systems in water and wastewater management, including water

processing and distribution, as well as wastewater collection and treatment. The division holds an annual symposium that features

It is my pleasure to welcome you to our 2012 ISA Water/Wastewater and Automatic Controls

Symposium. Now in its seventh year and with record attendance numbers, I am pleased to announce

that this year is our most successful symposium ever.

Thanks to our strong partnerships with the WEF Automation and Info Tech Committee, the Florida

Section of the AWWA, and the Florida Water Environment Association, we have tailored this year’s

conference specifically to the needs of automation professionals in the water and wastewater sectors. I

would also like to thank our many sponsors, exhibitors, and committee volunteers for being

instrumental to our success this year.

We have a strong program this year, with over 25 technical speakers, a keynote address, two invited speakers, and two

guest speakers. We also have a packed exhibit hall, a great general reception, and top notch catering lined up. Don’t forget

to also check out our plant tour and the optional full-day training course on cybersecurity. I look forward to meeting all of

you at this year’s symposium.

2012 ISA Water/Wastewater and Automatic Controls Symposium

On behalf of the entire program committee, I would like to formally welcome you to this year’s 2012

WWAC Symposium. Our focus is to help professionals in the water and wastewater industries gain a

greater understanding of how automatic control applications, utilizing the latest in instrumentation and

intelligent controls technology, can be applied to improve both process measurement water and

wastewater processing, collection, treatment, and distribution.

Our symposium is a three day event where attendees will experience a breath of learning and continuing

education opportunities. Our first day is dedicated to our cybersecurity training course and plant tour,

Our second and third days are dedicated to technical presentations. In addition to our 25 technical speakers, we have an

informative keynote opening, invited speakers, and guest speakers are part of our program

I also encourage you to visit our exhibit hall, talk with our sponsors, and network with your fellow attendees. From these

interactions you will find out about new techniques, products and approaches for your daily automation challenges.

We are pleased to welcome the full range of automation professionals in our sector to our symposium. This includes both

plant people, including operations, maintenance, engineering and management, as well as plant designers, instrumentation

specialists, and system integration firms. Please take advantage of the professional development opportunities afforded to

Welcome Message from the ISA Water/Wastewater Industries Division

Welcome to the 2012 ISA Water/Wastewater Automatic Controls Symposium. We’re very happy to be

back in Orlando and to announce three new strategic partnerships that are going to bring tremendous

values to the event and its attendees. The Water Environment Federation (WEF), Florida American

Water Works Association (FAWWA), and Florida Water Environment Federation (FWEA) are

technical co-sponsors this year for the first time. As a result, the symposium will be offering FDEP

approved CEUs for Florida-state licensed water and wastewater operators. Attendees from out of state

and ISA members can also receive 20 PDHs via the ISA.

With so many water and wastewater utilities facing aging infrastructure and challenging funding environments, our

keynote this year is timely. Celine Hyer, principal consultant with Red Oak Division of Malcolm Pirnie/ARCADIS in

Tampa, Florida will present “Facing Utility Challenges: Managing Risk and Addressing Aging Infrastructure Needs.”

I’m looking forward to our seventh symposium, as I know it will be our best yet. We’ll have a full day of training

followed by two jam-packed days of top notch technical content, all laser-focused on applying automation in the water

and wastewater industries.
