On Sunday, September 2, at 10:00 A.M., we will reopen our newly
renovated Sanctuary, rededicate it to the glory of God, and
celebrate the Lord’s Supper by Intinction.
We give thanks to God for the leadership and dedication of those
who worked so hard to bring this project to completion:
Long Range Planning Committee: Ken Craven (chairperson and dedicated organizer, manager,
director, and “angel” of the project), John Jackson, Ed Rainwater, Jad Smith, and
Ozzie Williams
“Technical Advisor”: Jacque Park, who got the project from vision to fruition with her
amazing ability to make dreams come true
In-reach Committee: Sara Craven (Jacque’s stand-in and “angel-in-waiting” for the
project), Sandy Swanson, and Lucille Rainwater
Worship Committee: Veronika Camehl, Debbie Shedden, Lois Atwood
Church Librarian: Susan Forrest and her “elf,” Caro Jackson
Tapestry Maven: Kay Stanley
Fall Worship:
We will also worship in the Sanctuary at 10:00 on Sunday, September 9. We will then return
to our regular worship schedule, 8:30 and 11:00, on Sunday, September 16. Sunday School
will also then return to its regular time, 9:30.
NOTE: The Church Office will be closed Monday, September 03, in observance of Labor Day

YEAR OF THE BIBLE
It was just one year ago when this newsletter announced Session’s endorsement of the
program we called YEAR OF THE BIBLE. We dare to implore, cajole, wheedle, shepherd,
even beg everyone in the congregation to read through the entire Bible together in one
year! Many of you signed on, and most of you who did are still at it now as we look ahead to
the final two months. Please do not give up now: we are in the home stretch!
This month, September, our Old Testament readings will focus on the books of Ezekiel and
Daniel. Ezekiel lived through the conquest of Jerusalem and was taken into exile. The
first prophecies are of the coming judgment on Jerusalem, then of judgment on other
nations, and finally on the future restoration for God’s people. The Book of Daniel speaks
through strange images to the sovereignty of God, assuring the people they can trust God
despite the difficulties and trials they face.
The New Testament readings are the seven so-called “general epistles,” which should be
relatively familiar and easy to read. They all reinforce faith and encourage exemplary
Christian living.

FROM THE InREACH COMMITTEE...
As stated in our Committee article last month, our church
family has been fortunate to welcome several new mem-
bers this year. We believe you would enjoy getting to
know more about them, so we are proud to introduce …
Jan and Chris Barker
The Barker's moved to the Coastal Bend in 2010 from the inland of East Central Kansas to enjoy the water year round. November 1st had always been the saddest day of the year when they had to pull their sailboat out of the water for the winter. Their free time is spent now enjoying weekends on their 40ft Marine Trader Trawler, "Moonshine" (hey it came with the boat...and it fit) or working on their current project a Privateer sailboat they are refurbishing to look like a turn-of-the-century pirate ship, which they hope to launch this Fall. They are loving their new coastal living.
Chris and Jan share their home in Aransas Pass with a rescue Doberman named Sasha and 3 beloved cats, Skooter, Sammy, and Buddy. They share 5 kids between them and 4 grandkids, with a fifth on the way in the Spring. Jan works as the Occupational Health Nurse for Christus Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi, Memo-rial and Christus Spohn Hospital, Beeville. She also does Fine Art and Professional photography. Chris is a Service Writer for Commercial Motors in Aransas Pass. Jan spent over a year looking for her church home after moving to Aransas Pass and knew from her first visit to First Presbyterian of Rockport she had found it. See you soon! Jan

Just a reminder that “Summer Worship” continues at 10:00 for the first 2 Sundays in September,
though we shift to our newly "spruced up" sanctuary for them. Then on September 16 and for the
remainder of the year, early birds will get to once again enjoy 8:30 worship in the Fellowship Hall.
Thank you to August's head ushers: Holly Hamilton and Sally Reynolds.
Communion was prepared by Debbie Shedden with wine provided by Sally Reynolds.
August’s Communion servers were: Nancy Melcher, Rick Roe, and Kay Stanley.
September head ushers are: Johnny Jackson and Sally Reynolds.
On behalf of the Worship Committee, please accept my sincere thanks for all of you that made our
summer of Fellowship Hall worship such a wonderful experience. At times we were not too sure of
what was going on (see how much we miss you Charlie) but we muddled through and had a joyous
time. For everyone who gave of their musical gifts, for those who assisted visiting clergy, for ushers
who had to adjust and do things a little differently, and for those members who gave so generously
of their time and talents........I say a very heartfelt THANK YOU!!!!!!!
FROM the Fellowship Committee—
WE’RE HAVING A

Music Department “Notes” ...
by Yvonne Jaggard, Music Director
… is beginning its 7th year. Wow! Rehearsals resume
Monday, September 10 at 5:30pm. Our weekly practice sessions rarely last more than 30 minutes, so we’re usually on our way by 6 o’clock. If listening to the Handbell Choir perform the last 6 years has piqued your interest, then come check us out! Our “Bell Choir” practice room is upstairs across from the balcony entrance (see Page 3 with the map of the 2nd floor).
“Ding-A-Lings” have great fun making “a joyful noise unto the Lord.”
The Chancel Choir resumed rehearsals Wednesday, August 29, after a VERY enjoyable summer off! We will return to the choir loft on September 2nd proudly wearing NEW robes and stoles which coordinate very elegantly with the renovated décor of the sanctuary. A newly stocked library of anthems have been distributed and previewed for September and October with the virtue of favorites extolled. And so it begins again…..
Our numbers have dwindled over the years as high school students graduated and headed to college. The result is, We need more voices!
If you like to sing COME JOIN US in the Sanctuary on Wednesday evenings immediately following Wednesday Night Supper and Supper at 7 o’clock. Dress is definitely casual and we have a relaxing, enjoyable time making music together.
On Sunday mornings we gather upstairs in the choir room about 10:40 to warm up our voices and rehearse the morning’s anthem, determine seating positions in the choir loft and processional placement to ensure we end up there; then head downstairs to wait …. when the processional music begins, we’re “on” and on the move!
Chancel Choir: Child Care is available during rehearsals! Should you have a youngster needing supervision, a certified child care attendant is staffing the nursery for Wednesday night rehearsals. This service is at no charge.

Name Tags - Looking for your name tag? The name tags are now hanging in the "old
kitchen" and are alphabetized for easy location. It is time to start wearing them again as Winter Texans will begin to arrive. Help them remember your name - wear your name tag. If you have never had a name tag or if you have lost your name tag, all you have to do is print your name in the book located on the small table below the name tag holders and one will be generated for you ASAP.
Looking for "Good Sams", "Su Casa" or "Support Our Troops" displays? Look no further than the "old kitchen". Good Sams is located immediately on the right as your walk through the door, Support our Troops is located on the countertop directly across the room as you walk through the door and Su Casa is located right behind the wall where the name tags hang. Please take a look around the "old kitchen" and get acquainted with its new look and its new functions. It is still a work in progress with more cleaning up and some rearranging so bear with us as the room goes through its metamorphosis. .

MINISTERING TO OTHERS …
THROUGH THE USE OF OUR FACILITIES ….
“THE COMMUNITY TABLE”
Our Church will be serving on September 4th and we will need you to help us set-up,
serve, wash dishes, and clean-up. We needed more people last month. Our cooking
crew will be contacted individually. People to set up the tables should show at 3:00,
servers by 4:00, dish washers by 4:15 and clean up crew by 6:00. Call Pete
Chamberlain (463-9086) or the church office to volunteer. The Schedule for
September is as follows:
Sept. 04 First Presbyterian Church
(Please put on your calendar)
Sept. 11 Holy Cross Lutheran Church
Sept. 18 The Lions Club
Sept. 25 First Baptist Church
Note the addition of the Lions Club who stepped up again to fill a vacancy. If you know a member of our
local Lions Club, tell them “thank you” for being involved.
We have averaged about 200 diners per Tuesday lately but occasionally it goes over 250. We have been
flexible and have been able to serve everyone generously but it is not always easy. We are seeing more
young families than in the past. We are looking for 2 more high chairs…. (hint to Castaways maybe).

Layman's 10 Commandments. Someone has written these beautiful words. It's a must read. Try to understand the deep
meaning of it. They are like the ten commandments to follow in life all of the time!
1] Prayer is not a "spare wheel" that you pull out when in trouble, but it is a "steering wheel" that directs the right
path throughout the journey.
2] So why is a Car's WINDSHIELD so large & the Rear View Mirror so small? Because our PAST is not as important as
our FUTURE. So, Look Ahead and Move on.
3] Friendship is like a BOOK. It takes a few minutes to burn, but it takes years to write.
4] All things in life are temporary. If going well, enjoy it, they will not last forever. If going wrong, don't worry, they
can't last long either.
5] Old Friends are Gold! New Friends are Diamond! If you get a Diamond, don't forget the Gold! Because to hold a
Diamond, you always need a Base of Gold!
6] Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, GOD smiles from above and says, "Relax, sweetheart, it's just a
bend, not the end!
7] When GOD solves your problems, you have faith in HIS abilities; when GOD doesn't solve your problems HE has
faith in your abilities.
8] A blind person asked St. Anthony: "Can there be anything worse than losing eye sight?" He
replied: "Yes, losing your vision!"
9] When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them, and sometimes, when you
are safe and happy, remember that someone has prayed for you.
10] WORRYING does not take away tomorrow's TROUBLES, it takes away today's PEACE.
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.

Pirates Landing, Summer - 2012, has come and gone. We served
between 90 and 100 registrants – some came every time it was open for them. Our
mission to provide a safe, lightly supervised place for youth in our community to gather,
enjoy recreational activities, and exchange stories, expanded to include providing small
earning opportunities for some great teens including Jenny Beth and Ashley who were
a part of our high school youth staff. We are making notes about this year’s successes
to use as we plan summer - 2013
Understanding the certifications, regulations, training, and insurance involved with
developing and providing Staff/volunteers to host a program for older youth was a challenge. There was a lot of
prayer-time! However, for some reason which we will understand later, I always felt our program was “Blessed by
the Spirit” because no matter what challenge we encountered, the sea parted in another direction if we just asked
for help and accepted the answers.
On behalf of the youth who attended the staff and volunteers who conducted the sessions, and the Steering
Committee who both volunteered and helped plan the program, John and I would like to say “Thank You!” The
use of the building and A/C with it’s facilities set the stage and the nest egg contribution from the Wonderful
Women of PW and the men & women of Castaway staff, was used to set up everything, pay staff, buy prizes,
signs, equipment and supplies was so important. Perhaps it helps to know that many of our permanent decorations
were $2 Pirate themed tee shirts purchased at Castaways. I always looked for the “P” on the label.
Our thanks to everyone who touched the program, who prayed for us as we worked, and who may have brought
young people there to release energy and learn the spiritual value of laughter and good fellowship. God bless
you for helping us – you were “The Wind beneath our Wings!”
John & Adelaide Marlatt
Editor’s Note: I am one of those who took “a young person there to release energy and learn the spiritual value of
laughter and good fellowship.” While my 11-year old grandson visited for a week this summer, he attended VBS and
ended the week with a Friday-night “Pirates Landing” adventure. I couldn’t be more delighted to report it and VBS
were highlights of his stay! When he won a door prize, he selected a Pirate’s t-shirt which he wore until his mother had
to peel it off. I strongly urge and encourage other grand parents to give this program a try next summer while
entertaining grand children. They, and YOU, will be glad you did.
A LITTLE HOLY HUMOR ... Did Noah Fish?
A Sunday school teacher asked, “Johnny, do you think Noah did a lot of
fishing when he was on the Ark? “ “No!” replied Johnny. “How could he,
with just two worms?”

The Good Samaritan Center
After 2 months spent out of the country, it is indeed wonderful to be
back in Texas catching up on events in Rockport, at First Presbyterian
Church, and at Good Samaritans! Once again I am indebted to Jerry
Hanson, this time for agreeing to help me by keeping our congregation
informed about Good Samaritans in Pres-By-Lines and with
announcements. Thanks Jerry!
At the Good Samaritans Board meeting on August 16, I learned aid to clients has not leveled
off making numbers for the first 6 months of 2012 about the same as the same 2 quarters of
2011, EXCEPT for food aid. FOOD aid remains the greatest need. The Food Bank in Corpus
Christi has been unable to provide, at 14 cents a pound, sufficient amounts of items most
needed by GS clients. Restocking of the GS pantry locally is costing $600 to $700 monthly.
During the remodeling and refurbishing at the church, GS baskets and envelopes have been
shifted around. Your diligence in successfully searching for the donation baskets and money
envelopes on September 2nd will surely be rewarded by adding joy to your Sunday! Our
continued donations of money or non-perishable foodstuffs on the FIRST SUNDAY OF EVERY
MONTH are greatly appreciated. Chili, dry beans and rice are always needed. As always,
peanut butter is much in demand, but when you shop for grocery items here is something to
consider about the versatility of cash donations. For example, a cash donation in the amount
of the cost of a jar of peanut butter would buy several jars from the Food Bank when it is available.
The Good Samaritans funded, ’Kid Care’ program is now busily involved in assisting needy
families with clothing required by ACISD for the new school uniforms. Each Rockport school is
allowed up to $750 in vouchers for this purpose.
NOVEMBER 15th “DAY OF GIVING.” Rockport-Fulton Good Samaritans has once again been
chosen as one of only two Aransas County organizations to receive funds. More details in
October of how we can donate and enable GS to receive matching funds from this “giving.”
DECEMBER 22nd CHRISTMAS BASKETS. In November I will include more information on how
we can participate in this yearly GS project.

To the Congregation at
First Presbyterian Church
Thank You for the thoughts, prayers and beautiful
cards when my youngest brother passed away
unexpectedly in mid-July and then my mother 2
weeks later. My brother Greg and I are still grappling
with the shock and enormity. Your kindness and out
pouring of sympathy has warmed my heart and lifted
my spirits on many occasions. And the prayer
comforter is doing just that, giving me comfort; I
treasure it.
A special Thank You to the Presbyterian Women
“quilters” who sewed two prayer comforters for me to
take to Montana for the double memorial service so
family and friends can tie prayer knots in them. My
mother, brothers and I gained much comfort when we
buried dad with his in 2008, now Greg and I feel the
same knowing Mom and Jay will be wrapped in a
blanket of love and prayers for eternity, too.
Hope all is well with
everyone and know I
think of you often!
In immense appreciation
and Christian Love,
Terry Jacobson
We would like to thank
everyone who offered
prayers and concerns
during the time Al was
in the hospital. Also
thanks for the prayer
quilt which has given us
a special sense of
warmth knowing there
are special prayers tied
directly to it.
Sincerely,
Jeane and Al Lind
Ministering to others…
through Prayer and Prayer Comforters
To all our special friends: It has been so nice to not be forgotten when we have been away from church for so long. People have been so kind to bring food to us. Jake is a very great cook, and I looked forward to what he fixed. The Sunday we had taco salad at church, Sandy Swanson brought us a nice meal. We enjoyed that so much. Also enjoyed what everyone else brought. Can’t thank you enough.
Blessings to everyone.
Jan and Jake Hose
D ear Rockport Church Family,
Thank you all so much for your thoughts,
prayers, and the prayer quilt. This has been the
hardest thing we’ve ever been through and it is
nice to know we have so many caring people
surrounding us. The prayer quilt is absolutely
perfecta and represents Daddy so well! It came
at the perfect time as well… reality was
beginning to set in and the realization that
Daddy is really gone was hitting. The quilt came
as an reminder of all the wonderful people we
still have.
Thank you all again SO much!
C arroll & Zach Schuler
Dear Friends at First
Presbyterian Church in Rockport,
I have received your special
prayer quilt and I want you to know how pleased and how grateful I am to be in your thoughts and in your
prayers. The quilt is so very special. My gratitude goes to all of you and especially to my dear long time friend,
Berta Little, for bringing my challenge to your attention
and to Bev Jacobson for actually sending the quilt to me.
First Church Rockport is my home church. I made my profession of faith there and for a time served as your
church organist. My dad, J. W. Wilkinson, was a deacon there. By profession he was a builder. He supervised
the building of the First Church construction when it moved to the present location. So my history with your
church runs deep.
Every day I see a sign on the wall at M. D. Anderson
Cancer Center that reads — ”When you have cancer it changes your whole life.” It is so true, I am humbled by
the challenge and I have been shown more love than I knew was being held for me.
Thank you again for your loving gift.
Peace, Ruby Wilkinson James
