Medieval LifeROBERTA GILCHRIST

Reveals the intimate and everyday relations between age groups, between the living and the dead, and between people and things.

The aim of this book is to explore how medieval life was actually lived – how people were born and grew old, how they dressed, how they inhabited their homes, the rituals that gave meaning to their lives and how they prepared for death and the afterlife. Its fresh and original approach uses archaeological evidence to reconstruct the material practices of medieval life, death and the afterlife. Previous histories of the medieval life cycle begin with birth and end with death. Here, in contrast, the author argues that medieval Christian understanding of the “life course” commenced with conception and extended through the entirety of life, to include death and the afterlife. Gilchrist examines daily life from the eleventh to the early sixteenth centuries in terms of the body, the household, the parish church and cemetery, and the relationship between the lives of people and objects. The author draw on a wide range of sources: costume, material culture, osteology, iconography and evidence excavated from houses, churches and cemeteries in the medieval English town and countryside.ROBERTA GILCHRIST is Professor of Archaeology at the University of Reading.

Medieval Church Window Tracery in EnglandSTEPHEN HART

“A perceptive, informative, beautifully written, and well-illustrated study of the topic.” SOCIETY OF ARCHITECTURAL HISTORIANS NEWSLETTER

While the terms used to describe the tracery of medieval church windows are familiar (Early English, Decorated, Perpendicular), there has been no really detailed attempt to examine it as a distinct, stylistic architectural form, a gap which this book seeks to address. Based upon a visual catalogue of over 250 images of surviving types and styles from churches throughout England, it traces the progression of ideas and the continuity of motifs and themes in tracery patterns from the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries, showing how different themes emerged within the main architectural styles; it also looks at the distinction between a window’s architectural form and its tracery style, and describes the several different tracery techniques. The volume is completed with a detailed glossary.STEPHEN HART is a retired architect, and the author of numerous works, including Flint Flushwork.

Medieval PetsKATHLEEN F. WALKER-MEIKLE

First book of its kind; an engaging survey of medieval pet-keeping.

Animals were to be found everywhere during the Middle Ages, as a source of food, as beasts of burden, or as aids for hunters. Dr Kathleen Walker-Meikle examines in detail their role as beloved domestic companions to their human owners, whether they were dogs, cats, monkeys, squirrels or parrots. This book is an engaging survey of medieval pet keeping in Western Europe, underpinned by extensive scholarship, that looks at the realities of pet ownership: how you acquired one, kept it, fed it, exercised it, displayed it, the problems you had living with it, and finally how to mourn the pet on its passing. It also examines critical views on the practice, and studies the representation of pets and their owners in art and literature. In this innovative study, medieval historian Dr Walker-Meikle, draws upon a wide ranging of sources, published and unpublished, including chronicles, hagiography, letters, sermons, poems, and iconography, to present to the reader a highly entertaining and informative account of medieval companion animals and their owners.Dr KATHLEEN WALKER-MEIKLE is a Wellcome Trust Fellow at the University of York, working on animals and medieval medicine.

Church Bells and Bell-RingingA Norfolk ProfilePAUL CAT TERMOLE

A general introduction to the historical background of church bells and bellringing.

The beginnings of scientific changeringing now seem most likely, from the considerable body of evidence which has emerged, to have taken place in the eastern counties.Paul Cattermole offers a case study of the development of bell-ringing in Norfolk, from its beginnings to the present day, drawing heavily on local records and documentary sources (some dating back to the 14th century). He also explores bell-ringers’ links with the church and with their communities, and studies in detail the technical development of church towers and bell frames. Norfolk is important in this respect because the restoration work which took place in many counties in the 19th century passed many Norfolk villages by. This, combined with the often conservative approach of local bell-hangers, has meant that many historic bells and frames have been preserved.PAUL CATTERMOLE was Adviser on Bells to the Diocese of Norwich.

Lionel Tertis The First Great Virtuoso of the Viola JOHN WHITE

In this exhaustively researched and compellingly written biography John White encapsulates this noble man and artist as never before...White’s achievement is to bring not only his subject fully to life but also the times in which he lived via an impressive range of articles, recollections, reviews and letters...magnificent. BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE

Lionel Tertis (1876-1975) stands in the company of Ysaÿe, Kreisler, Casals, Thibaud and Rubinstein as one of the greatest instrumentalists – and arguably the greatest viola player – of all time. Such composers as Arnold Bax, Holst, and Vaughan Williams all wrote significant works for him; he was a member of a number of prominent string quartets; and he was later to design and promote his own ‘Tertis model’ viola. He is virtually synonymous with the increasing importance of the viola as a solo and recital instrument alongside the violin and the cello.JOHN WHITE is a prominent viola teacher and performer; in 2000 he was awarded the International Viola Society’s highest award for distinguished scholarship and contributions to the viola.

Dear DorothyLetters from Nicolas Slonimsky to Dorothy AdlowNIC OL AS SLONIMSKY; Edited by ELECTR A YOURKE

The fascinating letters of conductor/author Nicolas Slonimsky (1894-1995) to his wife, sharing his adventures as he traveled around the world to conduct new American music.

Among many achievements, Nicolas Slonimsky introduced modern American music to foreign and domestic audiences through conducting, writing, lecturing, and interacting with composers and musicians of all nationalities. From his travels, he wrote letters to his wife, the art critic Dorothy Adlow, vividly and humorously describing his adventures. Though personal, these letters are valuable in documenting his life as a musical ambassador who introduced the new to the resistant old and brought the outsiders inside. He carried out this mission by writing, talking, conducting, performing-always energetic, persuasive, eager to be heard. The letters provide important new information that will be of interest to scholars and students, yet are written in a lively, humorous style, depicting places, people, the vagaries of travel, and the anxieties of stretching limited funds to cover an ever-expanding itinerary.ELECTRA YOURKE is the daughter of Nicolas Slonimsky and Dorothy Adlow. NICOLAS SLONIMSKY was a Renaissance man in the modern-music world: Composer, conductor, critic, lexicographer, and author of several books.

West End BroadwayThe Golden Age of the American Musical in LondonADRIAN WRIGHT

The first book dedicated to a detailed history of the American Musical in London.

Despite countless books on American musicals, there has never been a book that deals specifically with the history of American musicals produced in London. This book is a history and a re-evaluation not only of the London productions but of the works themselves. Beginning with a brief account on the origins of the Broadway musical and the period of World War II, the book goes on to cover in chronological order every American musical in London’s West End between 1945 and 1972, the ‘Golden Age’ of the American musical. The difficult conditions of war-time Britain prepared the ground for the changes that would come with peace; while Britain clung to old formulas a new wave of musical theatre was evolving in America. With the end of war, new writers and composers emerged, along with changing attitudes to what musical theatre might be. Works that had proved successes in New York collapsed in London, where the works confronted a very different social context, and a strikingly different critical stance. The wider relevance of this history is accentuated as is the fact that these works effectively imported America’s social history into the culture of a Britain coping with aftermath of war. ADRIAN WRIGHT is the author of numerous books on music. He lives in Norfolk, where he also runs Must Close Saturday Records, a company dedicated to British musical theatre.

Making MusiciansA Personal History of the Britten-Pears SchoolMOIR A BENNET T

An insider’s perspective on forty years of the Britten-Pears School, generously illustrated and with quotations from the eminent staff and their students – many of whom are now internationally famous.

Moira Bennett worked at the Britten-Pears School in its hectic heyday in the 1980s. She charts its forty-year history, embodying its founders’ initial vision of a bridge between conservatory and career for gifted young musicians, from ad hoc classes in a grainstore at Snape, to an annual calendar of non-stop courses for singers, string players and ensembles in its own building and fully staged operas in the Maltings, to its current incarnation as the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme. Some of the most eminent teachers from Europe, the United States and beyond have come to teach at Snape. These include founder-director Peter Pears, Hans Hotter, Joan Sutherland, Galina Vishnevskaya, Jacqueline du Pré, Mitsuko Uchida, Mstislav Rostropovich, Ton Koopman, and members of the Amadeus Quartet. This authoritative and anecdotal historical survey of the work of the School is generously illustrated and studded with quotations from many faculty members and former students.

Letters from a Life: the Selected Letters of Benjamin Britten, 1913-1976Volume Six: 1966-1976Edited by PHILIP REED & MERVYN C O OKE

The composer’s final decade sees a new outpouring of creativity.

The sixth and final volume of correspondence covers the composer’s last decade. The genesis, composition and premieres of major stage works such as Owen Wingrave, commissioned by BBC Television, and Death in Venice are fully documented, as are the church parables, The Burning Fiery Furnace and The Prodigal Son. Important concert works from this period include the powerful Brecht setting, Children’s Crusade and the Third String Quartet. The volume also traces the conversion of Snape Maltings into the Aldeburgh Festival’s principal concert venue, its destruction by fire on the opening night of the 1969 Festival and its miraculous rebuilding in time for the following year’s Festival, as well as major concert tours by Britten and Pears. Close attention is paid to Britten’s final years, when his failed heart surgery left him a near invalid. As in previous volumes, Britten’s letters to his life partner and principal interpreter, the tenor Peter Pears, remain central. Other significant correspondents include the Queen and Queen Mother; librettists William Plomer and Myfanwy Piper; artistic collaborators Frederick Ashton, Colin Graham and John Piper; musicians Janet Baker, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Mstislav Rostropovich; and composers Oliver Knussen, Dmitri Shostakovich and William Walton.

Britten in PicturesEdited by LUCY WALKER

A photographic journey using a selection of previously unpublished images; a new and often surprising portrait of this major musical genius.

Benjamin Britten was one of the most important cultural figures in England in the twentieth century. Internationally renowned as a composer, performer, and founder of the Aldeburgh Festival and English Opera Group, he had a career spanning nearly five decades, producing a series of works such as Peter Grimes and the War Requiem that caught the public imagination, and becoming a familiar figure to worldwide concert and TV and radio audiences through his conducting and song recitals with his partner, the tenor Peter Pears. Behind this public face, however, Britten was an intensively private man, who valued perhaps more than anything the time he spent at home on the Suffolk coast, composing and enjoying a settled domestic life.Britten in Pictures celebrates the many facets of Britten’s life in a major new photographic treatment timed to coincide with the composer’s centenary in 2013. Using the wealth of images housed in the collections of The Britten-Pears Foundation at Aldeburgh, the book charts the curve of Britten’s life, using a selection of rare and previously unpublished images to reveal him anew in all phases of his career, catching a multitude of informal glimpses of the man ‘behind the scenes’ at work and play as well as in more familiar formal settings. The result is a new and often surprising portrait of this major musical genius.

Britten’s Gloriana Essays and SourcesEdited by PAUL BANKS

Britten’s Gloriana was planned as a national opera of broad appeal as part of the Coronation celebrations in 1953, but the opera failed to establish itself in the repertoire until a new production in 1966 revealed it to be a powerful and stageworthy work. This volume explores the opera’s cultural background, the early stages of its creative evolution, the first critical responses, and various other aspects of the work.
