Reveals the intimate and everyday relations between age groups, between the living and the dead, and between people and things.

The aim of this book is to explore how medieval life was actually lived – how people were born and grew old, how they dressed, how they inhabited their homes, the rituals that gave meaning to their lives and how they prepared for death and the afterlife.Its fresh and original approach uses archaeological evidence to reconstruct the material practices of medieval life, death and the afterlife. Previous histories of the medieval life cycle begin with birth and end with death. Here, in contrast, the author argues that medieval Christian understanding of the “life course” commenced with conception and extended through the entirety of life, to include death and the afterlife. Gilchrist examines daily life from the eleventh to the early sixteenth centuries in terms of the body, the household, the parish church and cemetery, and the relationship between the lives of people and objects. The author draw on a wide range of sources: costume, material culture, osteology, iconography and evidence excavated from houses, churches and cemeteries in the medieval English town and countryside.ROBERTA GILCHRIST is Professor of Archaeology at the University of Reading.

While the terms used to describe the tracery of medieval church windows are familiar (Early English, Decorated, Perpendicular), there has been no really detailed attempt to examine it as a distinct, stylistic architectural form, a gap which this book seeks to address. Based upon a visual catalogue of over 250 images of surviving types and styles from churches throughout England, it traces the progression of ideas and the continuity of motifs and themes in tracery patterns from the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries, showing how different themes emerged within the main architectural styles; it also looks at the distinction between a window’s architectural form and its tracery style, and describes the several different tracery techniques. Despite countless books on American musicals, there has never been a book that deals specifically with the history of American musicals produced in London. This book is a history and a re-evaluation not only of the London productions but of the works themselves. Beginning with a brief account on the origins of the Broadway musical and the period of World War II, the book goes on to cover in chronological order every American musical in London’s West End between 1945 and 1972, the ‘Golden Age’ of the American musical. The difficult conditions of war-time Britain prepared the ground for the changes that would come with peace; while Britain clung to old formulas a new wave of musical theatre was evolving in America. With the end of war, new writers and composers emerged, along with changing attitudes to what musical theatre might be. Works that had proved successes in New York collapsed in London, where the works confronted a very different social context, and a strikingly different critical stance. The wider relevance of this history is accentuated as is the fact that these works effectively imported America’s social history into the culture of a Britain coping with aftermath of war. The composer’s final decade sees a new outpouring of creativity.

The sixth and final volume of correspondence covers the composer’s last decade. The genesis, composition and premieres of major stage works such as Owen Wingrave, commissioned by BBC Television, and Death in Venice are fully documented, as are the church parables, The Burning Fiery Furnace and The Prodigal Son. Important concert works from this period include the powerful Brecht setting, Children’s Crusade and the Third String Quartet. The volume also traces the conversion of Snape Maltings into the Aldeburgh Festival’s principal concert venue, its destruction by fire on the opening night of the 1969 Festival and its miraculous rebuilding in time for the following year’s Festival, as well as major concert tours by Britten and Pears. Close attention is paid to Britten’s final years, when his failed heart surgery left him a near invalid. As in previous volumes, Britten’s letters to his life partner and principal interpreter, the tenor Peter Pears, remain central. Other significant correspondents include the Queen and Queen Mother; librettists William Plomer and Myfanwy Piper; artistic collaborators Frederick Ashton, Colin Graham and John Piper; musicians Janet Baker, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Mstislav Rostropovich; and composers Oliver Knussen, Dmitri Shostakovich and William Walton.

Benjamin Britten will be promoted internationally as both a cultural force and as a man of progressive social views. It will almost certainly be the most comprehensive celebration yet of a composer’s life and work.Britten is the third most performed C20th composer after Puccini and Richard Strauss.There will be major Britten festivals in London, NYC, LA and Moscow in 2013, and the centenary will be celebrated by top orchestras, opera houses and museums, but also through grass-roots celebrations by amateurs. The Foundation is aware of performances in over 60 cities in 22 countries.There will be exhibitions in a number of venues, including the British Library, the Barbican Centre and the Royal College of Music in London; Carnegie Hall in NY; others are being finalised.

There will be a new documentary film by John Bridcut – of Britten’s Children fame – on the final years of the composer’s life. There will also be a feature film on Britten and Pears.EMI and Decca will be reissuing CDs of Britten’s work and Tony Palmer’s documentaries will be reissued on DVD. There will be a new Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra app.The Britten-Pears Foundation will launch a new website – www.britten100.org – in a beta version in May 2012, with the full site going live on BB’s 99th birthday in November. It will include a database of events and celebratory material. There will also be AV material for free use on websites.Boydell & Brewer will publish or distribute five books related to Britten and his circle, and our extensive backlist will be available again – many in re-designed editions.

22nd November 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of Britten’s birth. To celebrate this, the Britten-Pears Foundation are planning, sponsoring and in many cases supporting a number of events starting with a press conference in September 2012.
