In 2006, the AHP Journal article “In Search of a Best Practice Model for the Hospital/Foundation Relationship” was the fi rst comprehensive piece published in health care philanthropy literature to explore the unique relationship between hospitals and their foundations. Promoted by the appearance of documented cases of legal confl ict between hospitals and foundations, and drawing on wisdom and ex-perience from the fi eld, the article espoused a best practice model refl ective of a high-functioning, synergistic relation-ship between hospital and foundation in the shared mission of philanthropy.

Since 2006, the issue of the hospital/foundation relation-ship has become of even greater concern to development leaders. In 2010, a national survey of Canadian hospital foundations by KCI asked leaders to defi ne the top ten issues of concern; the number one issued identifi ed was “relationship with the hospital”. Why is the hospital/foun-dation relationship now of emerging concern for hospital foundation leaders? What are the factors present in the relationship and/or the environment that have given rise to this concern? How does the health of the relationship impact philanthropic outcomes?

This session will examine issues inherent in the hospital/foundation relationship, strategies to build (or rebuild) the relationship, elements deemed essential to a high-function-ing relationship between the two, and how best to set and manage expectations for both parties.

Registration Attendees must have 10-plus years of experience in execu-tive leadership role. You must pre-register for this forum. See the registration form on page 23.

Growing Pains: Communicating Change in an Expansion Environment

The Cornerstone Campaign is the employee giving program at University Health Network. It is an integrated program reaching out to 13,000 staff at 4 hospitals, and offers a multitude of giving modalities (payroll deduction, monthly giving, major gifts, legacy giving, signature and employee-driven events, and a monthly 50/50 raffl e.) What makes it unique, however, is that our employees may individu-ally or collectively designate to the programs they care about most. This has been particularly successful when teamed with our capital campaigns. UHN employ-ees have contributed/pledged nearly $5 million over the past 3 years. Governance in the New Era of Health Care: What the Research Revealed

The governance model for most hospitals across Canada has changed dramatically over the past fi fteen years as hospital boards disappear and regional or provincial boards with a broader mandate govern. Qualitative research conducted by Barbara Dunphy-Gotell, as part of her Ex-ecutive MBA, examines the roles of hospital foundations and how hospital foundations are function-ing in this new era of healthcare. The study revealed that founda-tion boards and their development directors are being forced into new roles such as advocacy and fi lling the void left by a reformed health-care structure. Learn how hospital foundations must look at their own governance model to determine if their role needs to change in this new era of health care.

Welcome to Calgary!

Nestled in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Moun-tains Calgary is a destination where uncommon energy transforms dreams into reality. This young, vibrant city offers one of a kind cosmopolitan fl air with genuine hospitality. Revitalize your spirit with the world-class arts and culture, thrill-seeking outdoor adventures and delectable cuisine. You will fi nd it all in Calgary, the heart of the “New West”.

Look beneath Calgary’s Wild West exterior and you’ll fi nd a vibrant arts and cultural scene. Calgary’s active theatre community and fi ne art offerings will take you on journey of the imagination far beyond the confi nes of “Cowtown.”

To name a few:

Glenbow Museum: Western Canada’s largest museum, hous-ing both a museum and art gallery means visitors can enjoy world-renowned art and fascinating historical exhibitions all under one roof.

Military Museum: Discover the victories, tragedies and sacri-fi ces of the Canadian Forces. Interactive displays and artifacts offer a glimpse of our military past and present. Experience life at the helm in a Second World War wheelhouse, walk through a First World War trench and witness a bomber squadron’s mission over enemy territory.

Philharmonic Orchestra: Led by internationally renowned Music Director Roberto Minczuk, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra has been a cornerstone of Calgary’s multi-faceted arts community since 1955 and is one of North America’s fi n-est and most versatile live music ensembles.

Art Central: A hub of visual art and culture, featuring more than 50 shops, galleries and artist studios together under one roof. This downtown venue serves double duty as a vibrant artistic gathering place and a one-of-a-kind shopping destination.

Art Gallery of Calgary: Engage your inner artist with a visit to the Art Gallery of Calgary. This public gallery celebrates contemporary art in all its glory, offering cycles of innovative and cutting-edge exhibitions each year.

Calgary Opera: One of Canada’s most innovative professional opera companies, presenting three main stage productions ev-ery year. Each season, Calgary Opera presents three full-scale operas, from traditional masterpieces to world premieres.

ShoppingCalgary has a number of indoor shopping malls that qualify as destinations unto themselves. Find everything on your shopping list in the hundreds of name-brand stores at Chinook Centre, Market Mall or the new CrossIron Mills. Try one of Cal-gary’s farmers markets or independent shops for unique gifts.

Night LifeCalgary’s nightlife heats up after sundown. Clubs, lounges and great restaurants of all sorts are dotted around the Downtown, Beltline and Uptown 17 Avenue districts.

Family FunLooking for fun activities for mom, dad and the kids? Calgary has one of the youngest populations in the country, and where there are kids, there are things for kids to do. Fun things. Stalk life-sized dinosaurs at the Calgary Zoo or see the Rockies upside down aboard Calaway Park’s Vortex roller coaster—these and other family bonding experiences are Calgary’s bread and butter.
