SOuth carOlina State athletic MiSSiOnThe Department of Athletics fully embraces the University's mission and

enacts its policies, procedures, and initiatives with both the letter and the

spirit of that purpose. The administration and staff of the department of ath-

letics espouse a student-oriented philosophy, which ranks academic achieve-

ment as the number one priority for its student-athletes. Towards this end,

the Department is committed to providing a comprehensive intercollegiate

athletics program for men and women, which promotes the academic, phys-

ical, social, psychological, and total development of the student-athlete. Fur-

ther, the Department is committed to working collaboratively with other

constituents of the University to ensure the production of competent, con-

tributing graduates who are capable of making the transition from university

life to the workplace and into today’s multicultural society. Embodied within

this mission statement is the concept of an ethical athletics program which

values success in competition, success in academic and personal develop-

ment of student-athletes, and success in maintaining full compliance with

the rules of the University, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the

Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, and Title IX. In addition, the department

embraces the NCAA's Principles of Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct.

Coaches, student- athletes, cheerleaders, boosters, faculty, staff and all who

support intercollegiate athletics are committed to the fundamental values of

SOuth carOlina State univerSity, a senior comprehen-

sive teaching institution, is committed to providing affordable and ac-

cessible quality undergraduate and graduate degree programs. This

public university, with a student population between 4,000 and 5,000,

is located in Orangeburg, an area that has a traditional rural, agricul-

tural economy which has expanded to include a business and indus-

trial focus that is national and international in scope. South Carolina

State University’s 1890 land grant legacy of service to the citizenry of

the state is ensured through its collaborative efforts with local, rural,

and statewide businesses, public education, colleges and industry. This

symbiotic relationship provides a catalyst that spurs a reciprocal eco-

nomic and social growth for the University, state, nation and the international community at large.

SOuth carOlina State univerSity, through instruction, research and service activities, prepares highly skilled,

competent, economically and socially aware graduates to meet life’s challenges and demands that enable them to work and

live productively in a dynamic, global society. Since 1896, SOuth carOlina State univerSity has maintained a

legacy of excellence in education. The University has been home to generations of scholars and leaders in business, military

service, government, athletics, education, medicine, science, engineering technology and more.

THE MISSION OF SC STATE UNIVERSITY A BRIEF HISTORY OF SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY

Founded in 1896 as the state’s sole public college for black youth, SOuth carOlina State univerSity has played

a key role in the education of African-Americans in the state and nation. As a land-grant institution, it struggled to provide

agricultural and mechanical training to generations of black youngsters.

Through its extension program, it sent farm and home demonstration agents into rural counties to provide knowledge and in-

formation to impoverished black farm families.

The University has educated scores of teachers for the public schools. It provided education in sciences, literature, and his-

tory. The support of the Rosenwald Fund and the General Education Board helped the institution survive the Depression.

After World War II, the state legislature created a graduate program and a law school at SOuth carOlina State uni-

verSity to prevent black students from enrolling in the University of South Carolina’s graduate and legal education pro-

grams. The legislature also dramatically increased funding at the college in an effort to make “separate but equal” a reality in

higher education in South Carolina. During the 1950s and 1960s hundreds of STATE students participated in local civil rights

demonstrations and were arrested. In 1968 three young men were slain and 27 wounded on the campus by state highway pa-

trolmen in the Orangeburg Massacre.

Since 1966, STATE has been open to non-African American students and faculty, but it has largely retained its mission and

character as an historically black institution. In 1971, the agricultural program was terminated and the college farm was trans-

formed into a community recreation center, consisting of a golf course and soccer, softball and baseball fields. Today there are

nearly 5000 students majoring in a wide range of programs that include agribusiness, accounting, art, English, and drama as

well as fashion merchandising, physics, psychology, and political science.

South Carolina State is looking

to turn things around with a differ-

ent look and new team, after having

one of its worst finishes in school

history, going 5-26 overall and win-

less in the Mid-Eastern Athletic

Conference at 0-16.

After posting consecutive win-

ning seasons in 2008-09, and 2009-

10, the Bulldogs struggled the past

two seasons: 2010-11 (10-22 over-

all, 5-11 MEAC) and 2011-12 (5-

25 overall, 0-16 MEAC). Head

Coach Tim Carter is optimistic

that this season will be much dif-

ferent than the previous two

years, where the Bulldogs strug-

gled with talent and injuries

throughout the season.

The Bulldog coaching staff ba-

sically remains the same, with the

addition of assistant coach and for-

mer St. Augustine and Winston-

Salem St. assistant Ken Spencer

(UNC-Pembroke ‘91). Associate

head coach Murray Garvin returns

for his second season, along with

assistant coach Rio Pitt, who served

as Director of Basketball Opera-

tions, before being promoted to

full-time assistant with the depar-

ture of former assistant Kareem

Hodge.

“Make no mistake about it we

worked

really hard during the off

season to make sure that we don’t

have a repeat of the last two sea-

sons,” said Carter. “My staff and I

are committed to turning this thing

around and I feel we have the play-

ers that can get it done.”

The Bulldogs lost three starters

from last season’s team in leading

scorer guard Brandon Riley (17.3

ppg, and 3.8 rpg); forwards Presano

Bell (6.0 ppg, and 4.0 rpg) and

Omar Sanders the team’s rebound-

ing leader with 8.2 boards per

game, to go with 11.0 points per

game.

Meanwhile, SC State returns

three players from last year’s

squad among them team captain

and starting point guard Khalif

Toombs. Toombs (5-9, 160) a 3-

year starter for the Bulldogs, av-

eraged 10.8 ppg, 2.5 rpg and

played 34.7 minutes per contest.

He will be joined in the backcourt

by sophomore guard/forward Devin

Joint (6-4, 190), who was second on

the team in steals with 35 and aver-

aged 3.4 ppg and 3.2 rpg, while in

the front court, forward Luka

Radovic (6-9, 220)played a major

role from the bench, scoring 4.6

ppg and grabbing 4.2 rebounds per

outing.

Carter will also looking for help

from junior forward/center Do-

minique Youmans (6-10, 230) who

transferred midway through last

season from Snow(UT) Commu-

nity College, along with junior

walk-on guard Theron Stephens (5-

9,165- ), a transfer from Charleston

Southern University.

Despite the fact the Carter re-

turns only three players from last

season, he and his staff will be

looking for some immediate help

from eight newcomers, five of

whom are joining the Bulldogs

right out of high school.
