head CoaCh brenT bargenBrent Bargen is entering his seventh

year as the men’s basketball coach at Chadron State.

Last season he helped guide the men’s team to its most successul cam-paign in nearly a decade.

The Eagles finished the regular season on an 8-game winning streak to post a 13-13 record before falling in the first round of the RMAC Shootout to Nebraska-Kearney.

Six of the late season wins avenged losses from the first half of the season, including an upset of nationally-ranked Metro State in Denver. The win over the Roadrunners was the just the third in 31 games since they joined

the RMAC in 1996.The Eagles finished the season with

a 13-9 mark in the conference, which tied them for fourth place.

Bargen often says his team feeds off the Eagles’ strong crowd support and he encourages all fans and students to be vocal proponents of the program at Armstrong Gymnasium.

Bargen is a Nebraska native who was a Division I assistant coach for 11 years prior to being selected Chadron State’s head coach early in the summer of 2006 from among more than 100 applicants.

Prior to the 2011-12 season, the Eagles improved their win totals in four consecutive seasons. They nar-rowly missed qualifying for the RMAC postseason tournament in 2009-10 after posting their most conference wins since the 2002-03 season.

In his six seasons at Chadron State, he has coached 11 All-RMAC perform-ers. In addition, Bargen has coached five CSC players who have continued their careers professionally overseas.

During his coaching career, 37 players he recruited or coached have played professionally.

Bargen was an assistant at Long Beach State in California for six years prior to coming to CSC. Before that he was on the staff at Kansas State University five years. Those experi-ences helped prepare him to become

a head coach. The Bargen family was glad to return to Nebraska, where both Brent and his wife Leslie were born and raised.

The coach was born in Superior, Neb., and lived in Milford from kindergarten through his junior year of high school. As a senior, he moved to Crete, where his father, Bob Bargen, was an assistant basketball coach at Doane College.

Bargen was an all-conference football and basketball player in high school. He attended Doane, where he was on the basketball team four years and a starter two years when the Tigers were coached by the legendary Bob Erickson. During Bargen’s senior year, Doane won the Nebraska-Iowa Athletic Conference championship. He gradu-ated in 1993 with a degree in sports management.

After serving as an assistant coach at Dorchester High School and Nebraska Wesleyan each for a year, Bargen was an assistant coach under Tom Asbury at Kansas State University for five years. During this period, the Wildcats reached the NCAA Tournament in 1996 and played in the National Invitational Tournament in 1998 and ’99.

In 2000, Bargen went to Long Beach State, where he was an assistant two years under Wayne Morgan, later the

head coach at Iowa State. The next four years Bargen worked under Larry Reynolds.

In 2005-06, Bargen’s last year at Long Beach State, the 49ers were 18-12 and reached the finals of the conference tournament. They led NCAA Division I in scoring that season with an 83.7-point average.

Bargen’s wife, the former Leslie Grote of Harvard, Neb., was a volley-ball and track athlete at Doane. She is employed as the events coordinator for the Chadron State Foundation and Alumni Association.

The couple has three children. They are Ashley, a junior on the Chadron State volleyball team; Zac, who will be a junior guard at Chadron State this fall, and Jake, a junior at Chadron High and another budding athlete.

Will Pope is entering his first season as a graduate assistant at Chadron State College.

Pope, a native of Chadron, was a student assistant in 2011-12 when the Eagles qualified for the Rocky Moun-tain Athletic Conference Playoffs.

Matt Majkrzak (pronounced Mack-er-zack) is in his first season as a gradu-ate assistant coach at Chadron State College.

Majkrzak, a native of Elkhart Lake, Wisc., has been a successful 17-under coach the past two seasons. He found-ed the Wisconsin Jets and helped lead them to nine tournament champion-ships. He compiled an 87-34 record in two seasons.

This is the 22nd year that Chadron State College athletic teams are full-fledged members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The league was founded in 1909, and is second only to the Big 10 as the oldest continuous athletic conference in the nation.

The conference took on a new look as it began 2006-2007 when Western New Mexico at Silver City began league play. The Mustangs, who were in the RMAC from 1967-1990, replaced long-time member Fort Hays State, which opted to become a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, joining a number of other Kansas schools.

The RMAC expanded to 14 members in 1996 with the ad-dition of five schools from the Colorado Athletic Conference. They are Colorado Christian, Colorado-Colorado Springs, Metropolitan State, Regis and Southern Colorado. None of these members have football teams, but all have volleyball and basketball teams.

Besides Chadron State, the pre-existing members of the RMAC are Adams State, Colorado School of Mines, Fort Lewis,

Mesa State and Western State, New Mexico High-lands and the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

The conference members have conservative ath-letic budgets, but provide outstanding competition while emphasizing the educational, unifying and entertainment values of sports.

The conference members belong to Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

The conference commissioner is J.R. Smith and the assistant commission in charge of media relations is Sarah Meier.

The RMAC’s Web site, which contains information about each of its sports, is www.rmacsports.org. The RMAC of-fices are at 219 West Colorado Avenue, Suite 212, Colo-rado Springs, Colo., 80903. The telephone number is 719-471-4936.
