A Message from the Race Director

    Dear Athletes,

On behalf of the Ironman team, welcome to the 10th annual Ford Ironman Wisconsin!

We look forward to another exciting event this year. As thousands of spectators cheer from the shoreline, athletes will start race day with a swim in beautiful Lake Monona. Following the swim, a challenging two-

loop bike course awaits, set against the backdrop of rural Wisconsin. The run portion of the race takesathletes on a scenic tour of downtown Madison, past the University of Wisconsin and various historiclandmarks, including Camp Randall, State Street and Observatory Hill. Finally, athletes will enter theheart of Madison as they cross the nish line, located in front of the Wisconsin State Capitol.

I would like to thank the City of Madison, the Town of Madison, City of Fitchburg, City of Verona, City ofMt. Horeb and Village of Cross Plains for their continued support. I would also like to thank the volun-teers who give so much effort and support so that each athlete can realize their dream of becoming anIronman.

Enjoy your time in Madison and good luck to you for a safe and successful race.

A Message from the Head Referee2011 USAT Competitive Rules apply except as indicated in the Athlete Information Guide. In short, Ironmanwill operate under the three strikes and youre out principle. Even though DRAFTING is the only violation toincur a time penalty (to be served in the closest penalty tent, located along the bike course), every type ofviolation counts toward your three strikes, and every bike course violation requires a stop in a penalty tent. Anycombination of three violations results in a DQ.

Example: 1. DRAFTING violation (Red card): time penalty served in a penalty tent on the bike course2. BLOCKING violation (Yellow card): stop-and-go penalty served in a penalty tent on the bike

course3. LITTERING violation (Yellow card): this is your third violation (third strike) and results indisqualication (youre out)

So that you understand the rules on race day, please take the time to read and understand the rules in the AthleteInformation Guide and the 2011 USAT Competitive Rules. The POSITIONviolations are summarized below:

Triathlon is an individual event, and it is your responsibility to fully understand the rules and avoid penalties. Thereferees ruling is nal in the case ofPOSITIONviolations, and there are no protests or appeals. Other commonviolations include:

HELMETCHINSTRAP:Your chinstrap must be securely fastened whenever you are on your bike on raceday.

RACENUMBER: You must wear your bib number during the bike and run portions of the race. Your bikenumber must be properly attached to your bike and must be visible.

LITTERING:Do not throw ANYTHING outside of ofcial aid stations. UNAUTHORIZEDEQUIPMENT: Sorry, absolutely NO communication devices, MP3 players or other audio

devices. (Yes, that means NO cell phones, Oakley Thumps or Apple iPods). OUTSIDEASSISTANCE: Non-racers may NOT ride or run alongside you.

Remember that even though DRAFTING is the only violation that incurs a time penalty, youmustgotoapenaltytentforanyviolationtohaveyournumbermarked, andallviolationscounttowardyourthreestrikes. There will be no penalty tents on the run. If you are penalized on the run, the ofcial will mark yournumber on the spot.

Please treat other athletes, all volunteers, and your referees with courtesy and consideration. Not doing so isUNSPORTSMANLIKECONDUCTand may result in disqualication.

I sincerely hope you have a great race and achieve all your goals.
