2011 UMKC Volleyball Media Guide 2011 UMKC Volleyball Media Guide

After a disappointing 2010 season that saw the UMKC volleyball team post a 9-21 re-cord overall and a 6-12 record in The Summit League, the ‘Roos are primed to rebound under first year head coach Christi Posey.

Posey, who takes over the UMKC program after serving as the top assistant at Kansas for the past 11 seasons, inherits a 13 player roster that features 12 upperclassmen, includ-ing seven seniors and no freshmen. Joining Posey on the UMKC staff will be first year assistant Trent Jones, who previously served as the head coach at Missouri-St. Louis, sec-ond year graduate as-sistant Heather Adams and volunteer assistant Billy Ebel, while Ellie Coons returns for her fourth season as the manager.

With 11 returning letter-winners returning, in-cluding all six starters and the libero, UMKC is expecting nothing less than a trip to the 2011 Summit League Volley-ball Championship in

November.

OUTSIDE HITTERS

Leading UMKC offen-sively from the outside hitter position will be senior Kelsey Knoche, while junior Emily Lucas and sophomore Chloe Jarema will also see significant playing time on the edge for the ‘Roos.

Lee’s Summit, Mo., native Knoche, who enters her third sea-son in the Blue & Gold after transferring from Memphis, returns to the lineup after start-ing all 30 matches and leading the team with 34 service aces, while finishing second on the team in both kills (293) and digs (360) in 2010. In her two year career, Knoche has placed herself solidly inside the UMKC record books, as the senior ranks fifth all-time in attacks per set (8.85) and digs per set (3.16), while sitting eighth in the annals in kills per set (2.68).

Emily Lucas returns to the UMKC lineup for her junior season after

seeing action in 23 matches with 16 starts a season ago. In her 2010 campaign, the Sublette, Kan., native posted 141 kills, good for the fourth highest total on the team, while also registering the fifth most blocks (41) for the Kangaroos.

Rounding out the UMKC outside hitters is sophomore Chloe Jarema. As the Kanga-roos’ lone freshman in 2010, Jarema saw ac-tion in 21 matches with eight starts, recording 61 kills and 43 digs. With no freshmen on the 2011 roster, Jarema will once again serve as the youngest mem-ber of the squad.

MIDDLE HITTERS

A trio of upperclass-men will hold down the middle for the ‘Roos, including three-year starter and 2009 Sec-ond Team all-Summit League honoree Chris-tiana McQuin. McQuin will be joined up front by redshirt junior Brittany Fossier and first-year ‘Roo Annie Gladbach.

McQuin returns for her fourth season as a ‘Roo, where she has appeared in over 90 matches with 87 starts in the Blue & Gold. Last season, the Wel-lington, Kan., native finished third on the team with 240 kills, while her 112 blocks were tops on the team. Her 90 block assists, meanwhile, rank tied for the eighth most in school history, while the senior ranks third in UMKC history in block assists (277), fifth in hitting percentage (.255) and 10th in solo blocks (44).

Redshirt junior Fossier will make her return to the UMKC lineup this season after suffering an ACL tear in 2010 that forced her to miss the entire season. In her career, the Plano, Texas, native has posted over 250 kills and nearly 200 blocks, while starting 56 of 58 matches over her two-year career and captur-ing a Summit League Defensive Player of the Week award during her rookie campaign.

Gladbach, the third

member of the ‘Roos’ three-headed monster in the middle, joins the squad out of Kansas City Kansas Commu-nity College where the Fort Scott, Kan., native was named First Team all-Region and Second Team all-Conference in both her freshman and sophomore seasons as a Blue Devil.

RIGHTSIDES

Though featuring just two players, the right-sides will be a posi-tion of strength for the Kangaroos in 2011 as seniors Elizabeth Beck and Demetria Williams return from last year’s squad where they com-bined for 50 starts, 426 kills, 300 digs and 155 blocks.

Beck, who led UMKC with 294 kills in 2010, will again be heavily relied upon by Posey, as the senior was one of just three ‘Roos to start all 30 matches last season. In addi-tion to her team-high kills total, the Omaha, Neb., native finished third on the team in both blocks (74) and service aces (17), while ranking fourth on the squad with 276 digs.

Williams, meanwhile, shifts to the rightside in 2011 after spend-ing much of 2010 as a middle hitter for the Kangaroos. Last sea-son, the Wichita, Kan., native finished second on the team with 81 total blocks, including a team season-high 12 against IPFW, which earned her Summit League Defensive Play-er of the Week honors for her effort.

SETTERS

At the setter position, UMKC will turn to a pair of juniors to run the of-fense, as Ella Meier and Brittney Robers will see the majority of playing time at the position for the ‘Roos in 2011.

Meier, who returns for her third season in the Blue & Gold, is entering her second season as a setter for the ‘Roos after switching from the rightside following her freshman season. In 2010, the Lancaster, Pa., native started 14 matches for the Kan-garoos, finishing with nearly 600 assists in her first season as the setter. On the season, the junior recorded seven double-doubles after posting 200 digs

for the squad.Robers, meanwhile, returns to the setter position after spending 2010 on the outside for UMKC. Last season, the Allen, Texas, native posted 81 kills, 50 digs and 20 blocks in 22 matches, including 13 starts after recording a career-high 12 assists during her freshman season in the match with IPFW.

LIBERO/DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS

In the back row, three ‘Roo seniors will handle the libero and defen-sive specialist duties, including Nicole Kerk-man, who is poised to break the UMKC record for career digs, while classmates Erin Well-wood and Kara Thomas add depth to the posi-tion.

Kerkman, who sits 273 digs shy of the school record with 1,063 in her career, returns for her fourth season and her third as the full-time libero. Last season, the Omaha, Neb., na-tive recorded 296 digs and a 3.88 digs per set mark, each ranking as the eighth highest total in school his-tory. In her career, the

senior has recorded a 3.52 digs per set rate, ranking as the second highest mark in school history.

Erin Wellwood joins the back row rotation for her senior season after spending the previous three as a setter for the ‘Roos. In her career, the Omaha, Neb., na-tive has recorded 1,353 assists, placing her fifth all-time in school history, while record-ing over 600 career digs, including over 150 in each of her three seasons and more than 200 twice.

The final member of the back row will be first year senior Kara Thomas. Thomas, who spent the spring season with the ‘Roos, joined the squad after spending the 2008 season at Pittsburgh State where she helped the Gorillas to a 28-7 record.

THE SCHEDULE

This season, the ‘Roos will open up on the road with a pair of tournament, starting on Aug. 26-27 at the Black Knights Invita-tional where they will face Bryant, host Army

Christi PoseyHead Coach

First SeasonKansas ‘82

Christi Posey was named the new head coach of the Kan-garoo volleyball program on Feb. 14, 2011. Posey has spent the past eleven seasons as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at the University of Kansas, where she landed the No. 26 ranked class in the nation according to PrepVolleyball.com in 2010.

“We are thrilled to welcome Christi to our athletic family,” Hall said. “Christi has compiled an impressive resume through-out her years of coaching and is an ideal fit for our volleyball program. I am confident that she will develop the type of student-athletes we are looking for and have UMKC competing for Summit League titles year-in and year-out.”

“With the leadership of Tim Hall, his administrative staff, and the returning players, UMKC Volley-ball has a chance to become a program in which the University and the Kansas City community can be proud,” Posey said. “It was clear to me from the start of this process that their com-mitment to academic integrity, athletic excellence and provid-ing a meaningful student-athlete experience were goals of this athletic department. I am ex-

tremely grateful for the oppor-tunity to lead this program and I am eager to get started.”

While at Kansas, Posey worked with the team’s setters and defensive specialist, while also serving as the team’s recruit-ing coordinator, overseeing the team’s managers, team room and camp administration, and acting as a liaison between the team and its sports psycholo-gist, promotions department and the weight room

During her time on the sidelines, Posey oversaw the development of many impressive Jayhawks, including 2010 team members Melissa Manda and Nicole Tate. Under Posey’s guidance, Manda became the all-time digs leader at KU with 1,457 digs in her career, while Tate served as the team’s primary setter the past three season and was named to the 2008 all-Big 12 Freshman squad.

From 2002-05, Posey worked with Andi Rozum who became Kansas’ all-time leader in as-sists, as well as Jennifer Kraft, who was named 2002 Big 12 Defensive Specialist of the Year.

“I wouldn’t be in this position without the incredible support

and valuable experience I gained within the University of Kansas Athletic Department and most specifically my KU Volleyball family,” Posey said. “I have much to be thankful for.”

Prior to heading to Lawrence, Posey served as the head volleyball coach at Blue Val-ley Northwest High School in Overland Park, Kan., from 1993 to 2000. During that time, Posey led the Huskies to KSHSAA state tournaments in each of her eight season, winning the state championships in 1996 and 1997, while finishing third three times. At Blue Valley Northwest, Posey also served as head girls’ basketball and assistant softball coach for the Huskies and was named a member of its inaugu-ral Husky Hall of Fame class.

While coaching the Huskies, she was named the 1999 Johnson County Volleyball Coach of the Year by the Kansas City Star, the 1997 Coach of the Year by the Kansas Volleyball Associa-tion and Kansas Sport Magazine after leading her team to a perfect 44-0 record, including a second-straight KSHSAA state championship and the 1996 Coach of the Year by Kansas Sport Magazine and Sports Con-nection after guiding her team

to a 41-3 record and the state championship.

Before taking over the coaching duties at Blue Valley North-west, Posey served in the same position at Halstead (Kan.) High School from 1983-90 where she was selected to serve as head coach at the 1990 Kansas Volleyball Association’s annual All-Star Game after being named co-Coach of the Year by the KVA. Four times her squad’s qualified for the state tournament, includ-ing a third place finish in 1990.

In her 18 years as a high school coach, Posey compiled an over-all record of 392-171.

During her college career, Posey lettered in volleyball and softball at Wichita State as a freshman and sophomore before transfer-ring to Kansas for her final two years of eligibility, where she was a standout first baseman and outfielder for the KU softball team.

Posey, a Wichita, Kan., native, received a bachelor’s degree in education from University of Kansas in 1982 where she ma-jored in physical education and minored in health education.

Trent Jones has been named the assistant volleyball coach for the UMKC volleyball program after serving as the head coach at Missouri-St. Louis, an NCAA Division II affiliate.

“Trent has qualities consistent with our vision here at UMKC,” coach Posey said. “He is a proven winner with assistant and head coaching experi-ence, and with Trent’s technical knowledge, recruiting expertise, and enthusiasm for the game, the UMKC volleyball program is in a very good place. We are excited about him joining the Kangaroo family.”

Jones took over the UMSL volleyball program in 2008, leading the Tritons to a 64-28 record in his three season and the squad’s first trip to the NCAA Division II tournament since 1995 in 2010. Last season, he directed the squad to its first appearance in the AVCA top-25 since 1993, while being named the Great Lakes Valley Coach of the Year in 2008. In his three seasons, Jones produced 12 all-GLVC selections, four all-Region selections and an all-Region Freshman of the Year honoree.

Prior to heading the UMSL program, Jones served as First Assistant at Washburn University from 2004-2008, helping the Lady Blues to a 129-23 record during his time on the bench. In 2007, Washburn made its first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Final Four after achieving a school-record 35-3 record in 2005. Under his guidance, the Lady Blues placed seven players on the all-American team.

rs CATALINA SUAREZ -- NO. 8, NUMBER RETIRED OCT. 31, 1996UMKC produced one of the greatest collegiate volleyball players of all time when Catalina Suarez donned a Kan ga roos’ uniform from 1988—89. And on Oct. 31, 1996, UMKC retired the No. 8 in her honor. She joins former basketball player Ronnie Schmitz as the only two UMKC student-athletes to have their uniform number retired. Suarez transferred to UMKC following the 1986 season after a two-year stint with the Uni ver si ty of Kansas. After sitting out the 1987 season, she finished her career at UMKC from 1988—89. In 1989, she was named first-team all-Mideast and was an honorable mention all-American. She received UMKC’s David B. Milner Award in

both 1988-89 and 1989-90, which is presented to the department’s most inspirational athlete. She was also a member of the Colombian national team for four years and served as the captain for three years. The decision to retire Suarez’ number was made by the UMKC Special Recognition Committee, which was composed of selected members of the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee. In 2008, Suarez was selected to the inaugural UMKC Athletics Hall of Fame, where she was officially inducted on Dec. 5. Suarez still ranks at or near the top of several Division I national record charts.
