Steph Marcon enters her fifth season in Loretto in 2011 and – for the second year in a

row – is coming off of one of the most successful campaigns in Saint Francis University

history.

The 2010 season was the best in school history for the Red Flash, who went 6-11 over-

all and 2-7 in the Northeast Conference. Saint Francis recorded the longest winning

streak in school history, notching three wins from March 19 to March 23. In that span,

the Red Flash defeated NEC foes Wagner and Long Island, marking their first conference

wins since 2005.

Led by 41-goal scorer Kate Simmons, Saint Francis’ 2010 squad set the program

season records for points (244), goals (173) and assists (71). Simmons’ individual goal

tally was also an SFU single-season record.

Two members of that squad earned distinguished honors after the season. Freshman

Danielle Conwell earned an NEC All-Rookie team selection. Then-junior goalkeeper Danielle

Pokusa also carved out a notch in the NCAA record books, wrapping up the Division I

Statistical Championship for ground balls with 61.

Illustrative of Marcon’s emphasis on academic excellence, Pokusa was also named to the

2010 IWLCA Academic Honor Roll by earning a GPA of 4.0.

During Marcon’s tenure, lacrosse student-athletes have performed at a high level in the

classroom with 29 players being named to the NEC Academic Honor Roll with GPA’s of

3.2 or higher over the past four years.

In 2009, Marcon’s Red Flash squad earned the school its first win in four years with a 20-

3 decision over Howard University on March 18. The squad’s 201 points shattered the

previous program record, more than doubling the old mark of 98 set by the 2006 squad.

SFU’s 152 goals that season nearly tripled the old record of 68 and their 59 assists were

also a new program mark.

Marcon has also involved her team in numerous community service projects during her

tenure at Saint Francis. The Red Flash have winterized plants at the Dorothy Day Center,

participated in the Adopt-a-Family program during the holidays, helped with the Annual

Johnstown YMCA Marathon and led activities for S.M.I.L.E. among other things. Marcon

is also a team captain for Relay For Life.

Prior to being named head coach in the fall of 2006, Marcon served as Assistant Director

of Student-Athlete Development at Saint Francis.

Before arriving in Loretto, Marcon was a four-year member of the lacrosse team at

Lafayette College. A goalkeeper, she finished her senior year in 2006 with five starts and

two wins. In 2004, Marcon helped the Leopards to an appearance in the Patriot League

Championship Tournament.

She was also a member of Lafayette’s 2003 team that earned a ranking in the national

top 25 by the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Committee. The Elbridge, N.Y. native was named

to Lafayette’s Athletic Academic Honor Roll in six semesters, the Patriot League Honor

Roll two semesters and was a three-time dean’s list honoree.

As a senior, Marcon served on Lafayette’s Student - Athlete Advisory Committee while

completing coursework towards a bachelor of arts in Africana Studies, which she received

in May of 2006. Marcon also holds a Master of Education degree from Saint Francis.

S e a s o n o u t l o o kThere’s no doubt about it: Saint Francis

University is home to a lacrosse program on

the rise.

Head coach Steph marcon enters her fifth

season in Loretto in 2011 and – for the

second year in a row – is coming off of one of

the most successful campaigns in team history.

The 2010 season was the best in school

annals for the Red Flash, who went 6-11 over-

all and 2-7 in the Northeast Conference. Saint

Francis recorded the longest winning streak in

school history, notching three wins from March

19 to March 23. Last season’s squad also set

the program season records for points (244),

goals (173) and assists (71).

ATTACKWith a year of collegiate experience under her

belt, sophomore danielle conwell should

continue to lead the Red Flash on attack. The

15-game starter racked up 29 goals and four

assists during her rookie campaign. She

collected 28 ground balls while ranking second

on the team in draw controls with 36.

Sophomore kara ledgerwood is expected to

see the first action of her Red Flash career in

2011 after sitting out her first year in Loretto.

After building a reputation as a scorer and

assist artist throughout her scholastic years,

Ledgerwood should provide an additional spark

to the SFU offense.

casey burk has the ability to have a standout

freshman year after an impressive high school

career. The Flash attach should benefit from

the addition of a gritty attacker of her caliber.

A healthy Jenna griffiths will also provide depth

on the attacking end. Griffiths scored six goals

in nine games during an injury-shortened

freshman year and sat out the entire 2011

campaign.

Sophomore megan ross scored three goals in

12 games as a rookie and will be another

weapon to the young-but-talented SFU attack.

mIDFIelDkate Simmons will continue to be Saint Francis’

‘go to’ on the draw. The junior captain enjoyed

an outstanding sophomore season controlling

a team-leading 61 draws and pacing the NEC

with 3.59 draws per contest. She will also be

counted on to spark the attack after accumulat-

ing an SFU-record 58 points (41goals/17 as-

sists) in 2010. Her 110 career points are also

a Saint Francis all-time best.

Also essential to the Red Flash transition will be

juniors catherine Helming and Sheri Fort.

Fort's speed, knowledge of the game and work

ethic all were evidenced by her 24 ground balls

and nine points in 17 games as a sophomore.

On defense she proved a proficiency at causing

turnovers, forcing a team-leading 13 in 2010,

and providing a spark on the defensive end.

Helming, in addition to her aptitude in the

midfield, has the ability to contribute on attack

with her hard shots which resulted in 21 goals

and five assists last year. She also added 28

draw controls to her stat line in 2010. The 17-

game starter will serve as a captain in 2011.

Junior catherine Jenkins also returns in the

middle for Marcon’s squad.

DeFenSeJuniors lauren kerley and katie dacanay are

expected to be steady contributors on what

should be a solid defensive unit in 2011. Their

vocal leadership and understanding of the

game will also aid in the development of the

younger players in the backfield.

Kerley caused four turnovers and collected 17

ground balls for the Flash in 2010, while starting

each of her team’s 17 games. Dacanay, while

seeing action in only six games due to injury,

made the most of limited opportunities last

season. The Virginia product picked up 19

ground balls while causing seven turnovers.

Fellow junior Pariss townsend-griffin also

started all 17 contests in 2010, scooping up

an impressive 40 ground balls which was

second only to Pokusa among the Red Flash

ranks. She also earned 16 draw controls and

caused eight turnovers during her sophomore

campaign.

lauren bezman, Sam dicastelnuovo, Alexa

Joanow and emily Patterson return for their

sophomore seasons in Loretto. Dicastelnuovo

leads the second year laxers with 15 starts

under her belt, during which she racked up an

impressive 25 ground balls.

GoAlKeePeRSaint Francis’ lone senior, danielle Pokusa, re-

turns in goal to anchor the defense. The NCAA

Division I leader with 61 ground balls a season

ago, the Cinnaminson, N.J. native racked up a

Red Flash program-record six wins in 2010,

while appearing in 16 games. During that

stretch Pokusa started 15 games while ob-

structing an impressive 194 shots.

SCheDUleSaint Francis opens its 10th varsity season on

Saturday, Feb. 19 when it visits Duquesne for a

noon match. The Red Flash will play their first

five games on the road before welcoming

Howard on March 13 for their home opener.

SFU begins conference play at Quinnipiac on

March 25 and wraps up its 17-game regular

season slate at home against Robert Morris on

April 21.

When the Northeast Conference (NEC) was first

established as the ECAC-Metro Conference back in

1981, the league’s founders had one goal in mind: to

create a competitive NCAA Division I men’s basketball conference

for unaffiliated schools on the Eastern seaboard. A single-sport

entity at its inception, the NEC has grown far beyond expectations

over the past three decades, having transformed itself into a

burgeoning 12-member, 23-sport conference. To mark the NEC’s

30th Anniversary season in 2010-11, the Conference will proudly

celebrate its heritage as its builds toward a promising future.

The NEC and its member institutions are committed to providing

opportunities for student-athletes to achieve their fullest potential

both in athletic competition and in the classroom. Likewise, the

Conference continually strives to be an NCAA Division I leader for

athletic success, academic achievement and integrity,

sportsmanship, equity and diversity, community partnership and

national engagement.

The remarkable success story of the conference began to unfold

in 1985, when the league began sponsoring additional sports.

Three years later, a change of name was in order and the

Northeast Conference as we know it today was born. With

membership and sport sponsorship continuing to grow over the

next 25 years, the NEC now enjoys qualification or play-in access

to 14 different NCAA Championships (baseball, men’s and

women’s basketball, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s

golf, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball,

men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball).

Though the NEC has featured various incarnations since its

inception, charter members Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island,

Robert Morris, St. Francis (NY), Saint Francis (PA) and Wagner

remain part of the current 12-school alignment. They are joined

by Monmouth (admitted in 1985), Mount St. Mary’s (1989),

Central Connecticut State (1997), Quinnipiac (1998) and Sacred

Heart (1999). NEC expansion continues with the addition of

Bryant University in 2012 as the league’s 12th member, which

will give the league a six-state geographic footprint with access to

such major media markets as New York City, Baltimore,

Pittsburgh, Hartford and Providence.

NEC member institutions now compete in 23 championship sports:

baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s bowling, men’s

and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s and

women’s golf, men’s and women’sindoor track and field, men’s

and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and

field, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming,

men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball.

Give a Gift, Build a Legacy...Alumni, parents, friends, students, faculty and staff are among those whohave generously supported the Saint Francis University Stokes Club.

The Stokes club is an organization which provides assistance and support to student-athletes participating in our 21-sport Division I Athletics Program. Our student-athletes and coaches work hard to represent Saint Francis University, and you, in a positive manner year-round.

With your recent contributions, Saint Francis Athletics has enjoyed improvements at DeGol Field, which also includes Fr. Bede Hines Track, and the Stokes Softball Field. Contributions have also helped to improvedevery day working conditions within the athletic department.

We are extremely proud of our past athletic and academic accomplishments. However, with your help we can move forward andtake our programs to even greater success in the classroom, in the community and in our competition. The future of Red Flash Athleticsis very bright because you care about our student-athletes.
