2011 Annual Report

The Warsaw Education Foundation (WEF) continues to benefit from the support of ourcommunity and friends of Warsaw Community Schools.

The Red Apple Grants are awarded twice a year to teachers in the Warsaw Community Schools (WCS) who support innovative and enriching academic opportunities in the classroom. Who knows better than our classroom teachers how to motivate students to reach beyond ordinary learning. In 2011, we awarded nearly $16,000 in Red Apple Grants. Please read about the wonderful grants awarded inside this report.

The 2011 Community Quiz Bowl, held in March, was a huge community success once again. Thanks to our teams along with our major sponsors, we were able to raise over $18,000 for the Warsaw Education Foundation. This event continues to grow each year. We had 47 teams representing area businesses and community organizations who answered questions about Academics, 2010 Year in Review, Kosciusko County History and Food Trivia. If you have never had a chance to attend this event as a spectator or as a member of a team, we invite you to join us in the future by cheering on the competitors from the audience or by entering a Quiz Bowl team of your own.

The WEF continues to sponsor the N.E.W. Workshop, WCS Chess Tournament, Academic Reception for WCHS students and the recognition of the WCS Teacher of the Year.

I am proud to report that 100% of our board and staff contributed to our Foundation in 2011. Our board is dedicated to “Investing in academic excellence today; returning excellent leadership tomorrow.” As we begin the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Warsaw Education Foundation, I would like to thank you - our donors who have allowed us to assist our teachers of WCS in striving for academic innovation and excellence. It seems like only yesterday that our community business leaders gathered together to establish the Warsaw Education Foundation. We thank them for their vision and leadership.

Partnership Program The Warsaw Education

Foundation’s Partnership Program strives to build a true community that works together to help our students. Each school in the Warsaw Community Schools district is paired with a local business that provides outstanding learning opportunities.

An exciting example of this is Claypool Elementary School’s partnership with Louis Dreyfus Agricultural Industries. Jeremy Mullins of Louis Dreyfus arranged for Claypool students to receive a freshwater aquarium for the school and invited Dr. Nathan Bosch, Kosciusko Lakes and Streams Director, to speak to students about our local lakes and streams environment. Students learned how important it is to preserve these natural resources for generations to come.

Other area businesses have their employees volunteering in schools with homework clubs, canned food drives, robotics clubs and tutoring. Warsaw Community Schools’ students have visited area businesses to present choir programs, tour company facilities and even deliver produce from their school garden to a local grocery store to sell to shoppers.

2011 Community Quiz Bowl

Warsaw Education Foundation’s signature event, The Community Quiz Bowl, raised over $19,000 for education when it was held in March 2011 in the Tiger Den at Warsaw Community High School. The Quiz Bowl featured 47 teams from area businesses and organizations who competed by correctly answering questions about Kosciusko County History, 2010 Year in Review, Academics and Food Trivia. Lake City Bank provided half-time refreshments and WCHS’s own Dave Baumgartner was master of ceremonies.

The Warsaw Education Foundation is proud to sponsor the Warsaw Community Schools’ Annual Chess Tournament. The 11th annual tournament was held in November 2011 at Madison Elementary School. Featuring 125 participants from kindergarten through 12th grade, the students squared off in chess matches during the Saturday morning event. Warsaw Community Schools’ has earned a top-notch reputation throughout the state of Indiana for producing strong chess teams. Over the past few years, individuals from Warsaw have qualified for and placed at numerous state-sanctioned chess events.

The WEF is honored to support Jay Bolduc, WCS Chess Club Coordinator, and all students engaged in learning the game of chess!

Select Indiana’s “Committed to Education” license plate at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and $18.75 of the $40 plate fee comes directly to the Warsaw Education Foundation to fund educational programs for Warsaw students.
