Welcome to our quaint little town, the City of North Pole. Our motto is, “Where the Spirit of Christmas Lives Year Round” and is notable in our many festivals and holiday décor displayed throughout North Pole.

While you are here, you will find light posts shaped like candy canes, decorated roundabouts, and streets named St. Nicholas Drive, Santa Claus Lane and Snowman (where you will find City Hall). Great outdoor venues, highly charged sports and arts activities, friendly faces and pleasant conversations await you. You may be in time for one of our fun annual community events.

One of our hidden jewels is Beaver Springs Slough Nature Trail that provides an opportunity to relax with nature right in the middle of the city. North Pole is also the entry to Chena Lakes Recreation Area where you can camp, fish, and spend a day at the beach soaking up the sun. No visit to North Pole would be complete without a stop at the world famous Santa Claus House. Also be sure to enjoy a meal at one of our fine restaurants.

Whether you come in the winter or in the summer, there will be plenty to do and plenty to explore. I’m sure you will enjoy your time! Again, I welcome you to North Pole.

Sincerely,

Douglas W. IsaacsonMayor

Round and About in North Pole

Page 7: 2011 North Pole Visitor Guide

North Pole was first homesteaded in 1944 by a farmer named Bon Da-vis. He along with several other founding fathers, chose the name North Pole in an effort to attract toy manufacturers. While this dream was never fulfilled, the Spirit of Christmas thrives in North Pole through its street names, decorations, community events, and the efforts of an enterprising young mer-chant named Con Miller. As a bush trader and trading post operator in the 1950’s, Con developed a reputation for playing Santa Claus to the native children in Alaskan villag-es. He named his trading post in North Pole the Santa Claus House, and it has remained an important part of the North Pole landscape since the early days.

The city of North Pole was incorporated in 1953 and is a home-rule city covering 4.1 square miles in the city limits. It operated its own schools

until the Fairbanks North Star Borough was formed in 1964 and began operating all area schools. Today there are several pub-lic schools, christian schools, and charter school. North Pole is home to varied com-mercial businesses, retail shopping malls, medical practices, churches, service orga-nizations, and the farthest north Christian radio station, KJNP.

The city of North Pole maintains full-time fire, police, utility, and public works departments for its approximate 2000 residents, which is partially funded through property taxes and 4% sales tax within the city limits. The population of North Pole within a 15 mile radius outside of the city limits is approximately 30,000.

In 1975, the North Pole Refinery, now owned and operated by Flint Hills Resources, became the major industry of the area. Since then, a second refinery, Petro Star, has been constructed. Both refineries produce most of the aviation and heating fuels in the state. North Pole is situated mid-way between two large military bases, Eielson AFB and Ft. Wainwright, and provides most of the military and support service jobs that help sus-tain the local economy.

North Pole Attractions

North Pole Visitor Center Log Cabin is operated by the North Pole Chamber of Commerce and was built from local timber by homesteader and entrepreneur Dave Ainley in the 1960’s. The Visitor Center is open summers from Memorial Day to Labor Day and is located on the Richardson Highway near the corner of Mission Rd. Friendly travel and tourist information is available daily at the cabin, as well as coffee, North Pole gifts and local crafts.

The main tourist attraction in North Pole is the world-famous Santa Claus House, located along St. Nicholas Drive. In addition to sitting on Santa’s lap and giving him your Christmas wish list, you can visit Santa’s Reindeer living right next door to

the gift shop and take your photo by one of the nation’s tallest Santas.

Outdoor Activities

Trails & Parks to Enjoy!

Chena Lakes Rec Area - one of the area’s most popular outdoor parks is Chena Lakes Recreation Area located just a few miles from downtown North Pole. The park boasts a large system of bike, nature, ski, dog mush-ing, and snowmachine trails, several camp-grounds, picnic areas, swimming beach, boat launch ramps, and canoe and kayak rentals for fishing or a leisurely paddle along the shores of the lake. info: 907-488-1655

The Fishing is Good!

The Chena Lakes are stocked with plenty of silver salmon, Arctic char, and rainbow trout, and other nearby fishing holes, listed below, offer good fishing as well. Get your fishing license and regulation book with a map of the lake locations at Sentry Hardware in the North Pole Plaza Mall. Good luck!

Terry Miller Memorial Park - located at the corner of Santa Claus Lane and 5th Avenue, features a large grassy area and includes a pavilion and picnic tables, and a charming children’s playground. The Alaska Railroad chugs by the park several times throughout the day - a real thrill for the youngsters playing at the park.

North Pole Park & Monument - home for our “historic” red and white pole, is located on 5th Avenue. The story goes that the pole was made by the Northern Commercial Machine Shop in the 1950s and dropped off at the magnetic North Pole by airmen from Eielson AFB, presumably to make it “geographically authentic.” Sometime later the pole was retrieved from up north, lost again and later rescued from a local junk yard. It was finally spruced up and erected at its present location in the North Pole Park, which also features playground equipment and access to Beaver Springs Nature Trail.

Beaver Spring Nature Trail - trailhead near NP City Hall on Snowman Ln. and ends at the North Pole Park on 5th Ave., is approximately .5 mile in length, and offers a refreshing walk through a typical northern conifer forest.

Geography: North Pole lies 360 miles north of Anchorage and 125 miles south of the Arctic Circle. Interior Alaska’s Lat./Long. is 64.83° N, 14.7° W, the same as Oslo, Norway.

North Pole is located 11 miles southeast of Fairbanks, the largest city in the Interior, and mid-way between Eielson AFB and Ft. Wainwright Army post. The community of Salcha lies 10 miles to the southeast of North Pole, and Delta Junction is another 80 miles southeast via the Richardson Hwy.

The elevation of North Pole is 436 ft. Nearby rivers include the Chena, Tanana, Badger (Slough) and Salcha Rivers. The White Mountains lie to the north and the Alaska Range and Mt. McKinley to the South, with the Tanana Valley comprising the vast 200,000 square miles in between.

Weather: Locals claim Interior Alaska has only two seasons - winter and “break-up.” It is true that North Pole generally has snow on the ground from late September through April. The big thaw that follows marks the beginning of an all to short “spring-summer-fall” season. Average January temperatures range from -20 to -2 °F; average July temperatures range from +49 to +75 °F. The record high was +95 °F in 1983 and record low as -67 °F (that’s minus 67°F absolute, not “chill factor”) in 1975. Annual precipitation is 11.5 inches, with 67.8 inches of snowfall.

Moderate rainfall, dry air, and long hours of daylight characterize the summers, while moderate snowfall, even drier air, and many hours of darkness rule in winter. The longest day in summer has nearly 23 hours sunlight and the shortest day of winter has just 3 hours and 43 minutes of sunlight.

North Pole - Santa’s Official Post Office: Thousands of letters addressed simply to “Santa Claus, North Pole” arrive at the North Pole Post Office each Christmas season. Several North Pole businesses and service organizations endeavor to continue a long-standing tradition, started decades ago at Eielson AFB, of sending individual hand-written answers to each child’s letter.
