Schedule A Program

• First day: Check in at Wright Residence Center at 8:30 a.m. Your program will conclude by 9 p.m., with optional evening programming following. Your parents will have optional evening activities.

• Second day: The second day is personalized for you and begins as early as 8 a.m.; all students should be finished by 2 p.m. Your parents may have some free time while you complete individual advising and registration.

Schedule B Program

• First day: Check in at Wright Residence Center at 11 a.m. Your program will conclude by 9 p.m. Your parents will have optional evening activities.

• Second day: Final sessions conclude in the morning. The afternoon is personalized for students; you will be finished by 6 p.m. Parents will have free time in the afternoon while students complete individual advising and registration.

This is a required reading. Bring this article with you as we will be discussing it during orientation.

• Parking permit. Please cut out the parking permit in this packet and place it on the front dashboard of your vehicle when you arrive on campus. It will be valid for two days before and two days after your New Student Orientation program. Vehicles without this permit will be ticketed.

• Immunization and health history information. Review the letters from the IU Health Center and take

action as instructed.

Orientation Events Throughout New Student Orientation, you and your parents will have separate sessions to attend but will reconnect with each other for several sessions during the late afternoon and evening. Bringing young children is not recommended, as the program is designed for adults.

Specific times for program sessions vary and depend on whether you are on Schedule A or Schedule B. Student sessions extend into the evening on the first day, but parents have no formal sessions after dinner.

MealsWe will provide lunch and dinner for you and your parents on the first day. Meals are not provided on the second day.

Students or Parents with DisabilitiesIf you or your parents require specific accommodations or have mobility limitations, you must contact the Office of First Year Experience Programs at fye@indiana.edu or (812) 855-4357 well in advance of the New Student Orientation program so that we can provide you with information on the services available. You may want to bring along a family member or friend for additional help, as we do not have staff assistants for this purpose.

Check-in and SchedulesPay special attention to the check-in times listed under your program schedule. If you plan to take an optional exam in either biology or calculus on the evening before your scheduled program, you will still need to check into your orientation program the next day.

Getting toIU BloomingtonBloomington is located one hour south of Indianapolis. Wright Residence Center is located at the corner of Tenth Street and Jordan Avenue on the IU campus. Additional directions and information about shuttle services from the Indianapolis International Airport are available at fye.indiana.edu. The street address for Wright Residence Center is 501 N. Jordan Avenue, Bloomington, IN 47406-7504.

Note: There will be road construction in and around the IU Bloomington campus this summer. Please allow plenty of time for travel.

Parking on CampusBe sure to cut out this parking permit. The primary lots for parking during New Student Orientation are designated in black on the map provided in this booklet; signs will guide you once you are on campus. Your parking permit serves as a free pass to any campus parking garage. Meters are not free, even with the permit. You may park in any space designated as A, C, D, or E, with the exception of 24-hour D-2 zones, reserved spaces, or “No Parking” areas. Parking in IU accessible spaces requires the appropriate IU permit. Vehicles not parked in appropriate areas or without this permit will be ticketed.

Don’t Get a Ticket!Place this parking permit with the other side facing up on your vehicle’s dashboard.

Your Evening at IU BloomingtonWhile you’re on campus, you will get a sneak peek of IU Recreational Sports by visiting the Student Recreational Sports Center (SRSC). Challenge other new students to a game of dodgeball, take a tour of the facilities, or participate in SERVE IU, an introduction to community service and the work of local nonprofit agencies. If a campus tour is more your style, don’t miss seeing IU Bloomington at night. We’ll take you through campus showing you some of the architectural highlights, student hot spots, and historical landmarks. We might just throw in some of our favorite campus legends for you as well. NSO Late Night will give you the opportunity to hang out with the Orientation Leaders and other new students in Wright Residence Center. We’ll have the music and games—you bring the good company.

Overnight AccommodationsStudent HousingWe encourage you to stay on campus during orientation. You will be housed in Wright Residence Center with other new students. Orientation Leaders will be available to answer questions and will plan social events during the evening. No prior housing reservations are required.•The fee is $35 per night. This fee includes tax and will be billed to your IU

bursar account when you sign in for housing.•You can sign in either the night before or the morning of your orientation

program, just before you check into the program. There is also time at dinner to sign in. Rooms are double occupancy, and roommate assignments will be made when you sign in.

•The common areas in Wright are air-conditioned, but the individual rooms are not. Rooms are equipped with window fans.

•You will be provided with a pillow, sheets, and a towel. Bedspreads will be available upon request. Please bring your own toiletries and an alarm clock. Phones will not be provided in residence center rooms.

•A list of housing rules and guidelines, including policies prohibiting drug and alcohol use, will be provided when you sign in for housing. Students who disregard the rules may be sent home and will not be permitted to register for classes during New Student Orientation.

Parent HousingThere are several lodging options available to parents and family members.

Willkie Residence CenterParents who choose to stay on campus will be housed in Willkie Residence Center, located at 150 N. Rose Avenue, at the intersection with Seventh Street. No prior housing reservations are required. Students are not permitted to stay in Willkie.•The fee is $48.40 plus tax for one to two people per night.•Parents can sign up to stay in the residence center any time before the

orientation program begins or in the evening on the first day.•All rooms are air-conditioned. Rooms are single occupancy and share a full

bath with one other room. Rooms do not have televisions or alarm clocks.•Parents will be provided with a pillow, sheets, and a towel, but they should

bring all toiletries. Bedspreads are available upon request.

Placement ExamsRequired Mathematics Skills Assessment andForeignLanguagePlacementExamsAll students must take the required Mathematics Skills Assessment and the Foreign Language Placement Exam during New Student Orientation. You do not need to arrive early to test in mathematics or foreign language.

OptionalBiologyandCalculusExamsStudents may also take optional exams in biology and calculus on campus during the evening before or the morning of New Student Orientation. These exams are offered for advanced placement or IU Bloomington credit. You can take either the biology or calculus exam at any of the following times, depending on whether you are on Schedule A or Schedule B. You’ll need to sign in at Wright Residence Center. Please plan your arrival accordingly.

OptionalOnlineChemistryPlacementExamScience majors intending to take chemistry at IU Bloomington should plan to take the Online Chemistry Placement Exam before June 1, 2011. Information and a link to the exam site can be found at www.indiana.edu/~fye/students/cpe.html.

New Student Orientation FeesStudent FeeThe student fee is $125. This fee helps cover all orientation costs, including testing, staffing, publications, your CampusAccess Card (student ID), all program materials, and meals on the first day. It also covers programming throughout Welcome Week and your first year at IU. The fee will be on your first tuition bill from the Office of the Bursar.

Parent/Family FeeThe parent fee is $30 for one person and $15 for each additional person and includes one set of materials per family. You may authorize parent fees to be included on your first tuition bill.

Orientation ChecklistReceive and review this Confirmation Packet.

Prepare for your academic advising appointment. Follow the instructions on University Division’s website: ud.iub.edu/fs.php.

Be sure to follow the instructions included in the immunization and health history information.

Make your travel arrangements. Visit fye.indiana.edu and www.indiana.edu/~bypass for more travel information, including updates about road construction in and around Bloomington.

Make your lodging arrangements. Participants staying on campus do not need to make prior reservations.

Pay overdue balances from any IU campus at least 24 hours before coming to New Student Orientation. Current fees may include ACP, IFS, IUBeginnings, or other early program costs. Your IU billing accounts must be current in order to register for classes.

Bring your 10-digit university ID number with you. Log into FY(Me) at fye.indiana.edu where you can find this number in the “My Profile” section.

Make sure your computer accounts are fully set up at itaccounts.iu.edu, following the instructions provided.

What Should You Bring?Your 10-digit university ID number and your username and passphrase for your IU computing account.

All materials from this packet, including your parking permit. The permit must be displayed on your dashboard.

Comfortable clothes, shoes for walking and evening social activities, and an umbrella.

Toiletries, an alarm clock, other overnight needs, and money for food and snacks.

A photo ID. You will not receive your CampusAccess Card (student ID) without photo identification.

A canned food item to donate to the Hoosier HillsFood Bank. Last year students donated almost two tons of food to the local community.

Help FYE support campus sustainability initiatives. Bring a reusable water bottle. We will provide locations where you will be able to fill it up.
