Leaders in Training It is tough being a kid these days especially a teenager – particularly when dealing with the stress of belonging to a military family. Our Youth Development programs help kids cope while providing them  with positive, fun opportunities to get to know themselves and each other. The San Diego Armed Service  YMCA’s Leaders In Training (L.I.T.) Program is a leadership development and job readiness program for military teens. The program is designed to teach core skills associated  with preparing young people to enter the work force with confidence and competence. LIT gives military teens a greater understanding of how to succeed in the workplace through interactive training modules using group work, role play and games. Staff LIT staff are full time Armed Services

 YMCA Youth and Community Outreach (YCO) staff members that

 want to enhance opportunities for military teens and learn about their 

unique attributes.

Our staff is passionate aboutsupporting military youth and takepleasure in maintaining astructured, educational program inan atmosphere of fun andexcitement.

The ASYMCA takes seriously theimportance of child protection andsafety. We have specific, tested

policies and procedures for all staff that work with children.

The following are some of our proven safety practices:

1. The ASYMCA has comprehensivepre-employment screening for staff members and program

 volunteers, including interviews,reference and nation-wide

criminal history checks.

2. All LIT staff regularly work withschool aged youth in informaleducational settings and arecertified in pediatric First Aid andCPR.

Job Opportunity:

Camp Hero Jr. Counselor  Upon completion of the LIT programgraduates will be considered for apotential position as a Jr. Camp HeroCounselor for one week in August.Jr. Counselers will receive 40 hoursof community service and attend allfield trips with campers. Staff willselect teens based on their LITperformance, attitude, behavior, and

 work ethic.

Training ModulesTraining ModulesTraining ModulesTraining ModulesTeens participate in an interactive Training Block in

 which youth undergo a comprehensive training inorder to prepare them for future employmentopportunities within the workforce and potentially 

 within the ASYMCA. Training modules include Child Abuse Prevention, Professionalism, Interview Skills,Team Building, Risk Management and Leadership.Teens will engage in group work, role play, andgames to apply modules strategies and skills.

Professional OutingsProfessional OutingsProfessional OutingsProfessional OutingsTraining modules are supplemented with field trips tolocal San Diego businesses for hands on work experience and knowledge on a variety of potentialprofessional careers. Military teens will be able toengage in the day to day job responsibilities whilealso learning about the necessary skills, education,and requirements needed to fulfill the position. There

 will be a Q&A opportunity for teens to ask theprofessionals questions and learn more about thebusiness and professional position.

CPR/First Aid Training/ CertifiedCPR/First Aid Training/ CertifiedCPR/First Aid Training/ CertifiedCPR/First Aid Training/ CertifiedIt can be difficult to secure a potential job as ateenager with limited job experience and skill sets. Asan added enhancement and job readinesspreparation all LIT participants will receive a full day of CPR and First Aid training with the option of 

certification upon completion of the class and test.

ClothesTeens are required to follow traditional school dresscodes; closed toed shoes, no hats, no mini skits, dresses,and no mid-drifts. On professional outings to localcompanies dress code will be business casual (jeans, poloshirt, khakis , blouse, sweaters, etc.). Clothing withparaphernalia, inappropriate messages, or offensivelanguage is prohibited. Teens will be asked to changeinto ASYMCA attire or parents will be contacted to pick up their teen. 

 What to BringIt is recommended that teens come with a backpack tokeep all their belongings together. LIT teens must bringtheir own lunch and water bottle to training daily.Please send only non-perishable foods as refrigeration isnot available.

 What not to Bring Teens may not bring electronic devices (cell phones,iPods, video games), toys, jewelry, or money to LIT. The Armed Services YMCA is not responsible for any items

that are lost or stolen.

Staff Lyndsay Calhoun: Program Director 

Her third summer at the ArmedServices YMCA,Lyndsay is a SanDiego native andgraduate of University of 

California, SanDiego with adegree in Sociology. Teens have alwayshad a special place in her heart after  working closely with Juveniles onprobation . Lyndsay is eager to explorethe unique assets that military teensencompass with their strong resilience,maturity, and ability to persevere. She ishoping the teens will gain usefulstrategies to navigate the workforce andfuture endeavors in high school andbeyond!

 Andrea Fields: Program Leader 

 Andrea is more thanready to jumpstart her fourth ASY summer  with the new LITprogram! Andrea is aSouthern Californianative, graduate fromSan Diego State

University, with a degree in Women’sStudies and Social Work. Andrea’s

enthusiasm for working with teens thissummer, stems from her experience asan intern at Clark Adolescent TreatmentCenter and teaching English to teens inrural China. She’s passionate, energeticand excited to get started!

Cathy Tann: Program Leader 

Kicking off her second summer at the ASYMCA,Cathy, a Texasnative with a

degree inInterdisciplinary Studies from theUniversity of North Texas, could not be more excitedabout the addition of teen programs.She has had experience working withhigh school students in AVID program,and is looking forward to using her background to contribute to the Leadersin Training experience. 

Let’s Build!Leadership Eligibility LIT is open to children of military service members from all servicebranches. The military servicemember must be rank E9 or below and assigned to a SanDiego military installation or SanDiego based ship. Teens must be

between fifteen and seventeenyears old by July 18th to beeligible. There will be nononono ageexceptions.

Financial ContributionsThe Armed Services YMCA isproud to provide over 40 freeprograms to San Diego military service members and their families each month. Should you wish to make a contribution to the

 Armed Services YMCA in supportof programs such as LIT you may do so by sending your donation tothe Armed Services YMCA at 3293Santo Road, San Diego, CA 92124 or call 858-751-5755 for more information.

DepositsLIT registration forms and atwenty dollar non-refundabledeposit will be required to register for camp. Due to limited space in

the program, should the family 

fail to cancel their teen’s LITregistration at least two weeksprior to the first day or the teennot attend LIT, the family will beplaced on our ineligible for servicelist.

child during training please callour front desk at 858-751-5755.They will take your message andget the information to your child.Cell phones will not be permittedfor use by teens. If teens fail tocomply with the cell phone policy during the LIT program staff willconfiscate the cell phone andreturn upon completion of theprogram.

If your teen becomes ill at campour staff will contact you to pick them up. Please havearrangements to do so in a timely manner. If you teen is injuredcamp staff will take whatever steps are necessary to obtainmedical care. If we are unable toreach you and your teen needsmedical attention they will betransported to the hospital by anambulance. All expenses for emergency medical care are the

responsibility of the parent.

Field TripTransportation

LIT will travel by Armed Services YMCA buses for field trips to localSan Diego businesses for hands

on work experience andknowledge regarding potentialprofessional careers.

The following are some of our transportation safety practices:

1. Each bus driver is a ArmedServices YMCA staff member whohas completed comprehensivepre-employment screening

including interviews, drug andalcohol testing, and referenceand nation-wide criminal history checks.

2. Each driver is required to performa pre-trip inspection for their busbefore transporting passengers.

3. Each Armed Services YMCA bus isoutfitted with seat belts androutinely inspected by theCalifornia Highway Patrol.

 We do our best to maintain a reliableschedule of departure and arrival timesand accomplish all planned activities.Please do your part to help by arrivingon time to LIT and ready for the day’sactivities. We appreciate your understanding that field trips are subjectto change as necessary for health or safety of the teens and staff.

LIT Policies 

Drop Off LIT opens for drop off at 9:00 a.m.each day. LIT activities begin at9:30 a.m. and may includescheduled field trips. If you expectto be late or your teen will beabsent from LIT please call the Armed Services YMCA by 9:15a.m. at 858-751-5755. Campersthat arrive after field triptransportation has departed cannot be accommodated.

Pick UpLIT pick up is at 4:00 p.m. Teensmust be picked up and signed outby an authorized pick-up list or they may release themselves withpre-approved parentauthorization. Please show courtesy to LIT staffers by arrivingpromptly for pick up. LIT teens notpicked up by 4:30 p.m. will be

supervised by ASYMCA staff andevery attempt will be made tocontact parents and emergency contacts. If by 5:30 p.m. theparents are not reachable ChildProtective Services will be called.

 AttendanceLIT is a full day, week-longexperience. Teens routinely late toLIT picked up early or late, or absent will be dismissed from LIT. Any dismissed participants will not

receive certification of completion

of the Leaders in Training

Program.

Behavior ManagementGuidelinesIt is the Armed Services YMCA’sgoal to provide a healthy, safe,and secure environment for all day LIT participants. Teens who attendthe program are expected tofollow the behavior guidelinesbased on the four core values and

to interact appropriately in agroup setting.

Behavior Guidelines:1. We will carecarecarecare for ourselves and

all relationships andinteractions.

Our staff is trained and is expectedto resolve behavior problems in apositive manner. In the eventproblems persist the child may besuspended or dismissed from theLIT. Some acts may result inimmediate suspension or dismissalincluding but not limited to:fighting, intentionally harmingothers, theft, and possession of  weapons or drugs.
