Electromagnetic Spectrum Define Laser LED’s & SLD’s Laser Benefits for Wound Care
• Tissue Repair • Inflammatory response• Pain
Other Laser Uses Laser Wound Care Studies Anodyne vs. Lasers Contraindications
Ultraviolet (UV)—Visible—Infrared UV
• Wavelength = 10nm - 400 nmVisible Light
• Wavelength = 400nm - 750nm Infrared Light
• Wavelength = 750nm - 1000nm
Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation• Monochromatic = Single color w/ very little
spread of wavelengths• Collimated = Focused light w/ no divergence
(spread)• Coherent = Light / photon waves are in phase
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLT) • 700nm – 1000nm
Light Emitting Diodes (LED’s)• Narrow frequency range; single color w/
narrow range of wavelengths• Non-Coherent & Non-collimated light • Divergent narrow beam• 620nm – 690nm
Super Luminescent Diodes (SLD’s)• Narrower frequency range and beam angle
than an LED, but wider than laser• High-powered LED • 660nm – 880nm
Evidence shows that red and near infrared light have therapeutic benefits for:• Inflammatory conditions• Wound care and tissue repair• Pain Control
Recommended Rehabilitation Wavelengths• Visible red wavelength (620-690nm) for
shallow penetration (3-4mm) such as superficial wound
• Infrared Wavelengths (760-1260 nm) for 30-40mm of penetration
Wavelength (frequency)Power (mW)Time (seconds, minutes)Continuous vs. Pulsed
• Most research is on continuous; Pulsed decreases effective power
Energy (Joules) = Power x TimeEnergy Density (J / cm2) = Power x Time Area (cm2)
• Radiant exposure
Light speeds up many stages of healing• Accelerates inflammatory response• Promotes fibroblast proliferation• Enhances Chondroplasia• Upregulates synthesis of type I and II
procollagen mRNA• Quickens bone repair and remodeling• Fosters revascularization of wounds
(granulation tissue formation)
Results: After 6 treatments of monochromatic near infrared (890 nm) photo energy (MIRE), most subjects exhibited improved sensation. After 12 treatments, no subject continued to experience absent sensation to hot/cold: all had improved sensation based on Semmes-Weinstein (SW) monofilament test. Remarkably, 65% of subjects exhibited restoration of protective sensation (4.17 or below) and no subject had a SW value above 4.93.
Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) Facilitates Superficial Wound Healing in Humans.• Conclusion: The LLT resulted in enhanced
healing as measured by wound contraction. These data indicate that LLLT is an effective modality to facilitate wound contraction of partial-thickness wounds.
Defocused diode laser therapy (830 nm) in the treatment of unresponsive skin ulcers.• Conclusion: Defocused 830 nm diode laser
therapy was well tolerated and was very effective in the treatment….of compromised skin ulcers of different etiologies….
The influence of low-level laser therapy on biomudulation of collagen and elastic fibers.• Conclusion: ….low-level laser therapy
contributed to a larger expression of collagen and elastic fibers during the early phases of the wound healing process.
Influence of low-level laser therapy on wound healing and its biological action upon myofibroblasts.• Conclusion: Laser therapy reduced the
inflammatory reaction, induced increased collagen deposition and a greater proliferation of myofibroblasts in experimental cutaneous wounds.
Studies• Low-level laser treatment can reduce edema in
second degree ankle sprains.• Low-level laser treatment for shoulder pain.

What is Anodyne® Technology?Monochromatic Infrared Energy (MIRE™)
Monochromatic• Single wavelength of light (890nm)• Absorbed by hemoglobin
Infrared• Invisible to the human eye• Penetrates approximately 50mmEnergy• 780 mw power per therapy pad• Photo energy – not thermal
Flexible Therapy Pads• Maximizes efficacy and ease of use
Laser Benefits:• Application ease• Significantly shorter application time• Application parameters set
Cancer Photophobia or light sensitivity Irradiation of the eyes Cognitive difficulties Pacemakers Children Areas of hemorrhage Irradiation of the eyes, endocrine glands,
and/or fetal/uterine
