John W. Speaker who developed products for the automotive aftermarket founded the J.W. Speaker

Corporation in 1935. Early products included tire repair equipment and kits, radiator fronts, car and

truck mirrors and automotive lighting. In the early 1940s J.W. Speaker developed the Heatab®, a

miniature portable stove, and the “P38” GI can opener both of which were widely used during World

War II through to the late 1970s.

In 1960, under the leadership of Jack Speaker (John’s son), the J.W. Speaker Corporation shifted

its focus to specializing in OEM vehicle lighting initially for lawn & garden and golf & turf tractors.

Since then, J.W. Speaker has developed and specialized in a variety of lighting projects for other

OEM manufacturers in agriculture, construction, heavy commercial, material handling, mining,

motorcycle, recreation, marine, aviation and aftermarkets.

Today J.W. Speaker is led by John’s grandsons Tim and Jamie Speaker. The company is focused

on developing innovative lighting solutions for customers around the world. J.W. Speaker continues

to not only embrace the latest in lighting technology but also works closely with manufacturers to

develop lighting solutions maximizing performance through High Intensity Discharge (HID), Light

Emitting Diodes (LEDs) and traditional light sources (bulb types) to meet customer requirements.

JW Speaker meets various regulations for lighting products for our customers on a global

market. The following are some of the standards and regulations which Speaker meets from

design to development and to the end product.

ASABE Standards

American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers regulations for agricultural equipment.

SAE Standards

SAE International (SAE), formerly the Society of Automotive Engineers, is a professional

organization for mobility engineering professionals in the aerospace, automotive, and commercial

vehicle industries. The Society is a standards development organization for the engineering of

powered vehicles of all kinds, including cars, trucks, boats, aircraft, and others. The SAE

standards are mainly used in the US and Canada and do not recognize ECE approvals.

ECE Standards

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Transport Division has been

providing secretariat services to the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations

for more than 50 years. The World Forum has incorporated into its regulatory framework the

technological innovations of vehicles to make them safer and more environmentally sound.

Most countries, even if not formally participating in the 1958 agreement, recognize the ECE

Regulations and either mirror the ECE Regulations’ content in their own national requirements

(ex. Australian Design Rules:- ADR’s), or permit the use and importation of ECE-approved

vehicles, or both.

UL Recognized

Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) is an independent product safety certification organization.

Based in Northbrook, Illinois, UL develops standards and test procedures for products,

materials, components, assemblies, tools and equipment, chiefly dealing with product safety.

UL also evaluates and certifies the efficiency of a company’s business processes through its

management system registration programs. Additionally, UL analyzes drinking and other clean

water samples through its drinking water laboratory in South Bend, Indiana and evaluates

products for environmental sustainability through its subsidiary, UL Environment.

UL is one of several companies approved for such testing by the U.S. federal agency OSHA.

OSHA maintains a list of approved testing laboratories, known as Nationally Recognized Testing

Laboratories.

CE Recognized

The CE marking (also known as CE mark) is a mandatory conformity mark on many products

placed on the single market in the European Economic Area (EEA). The CE marking certifies

that a product has met EU consumer safety, health or environmental requirements.

IP (Ingress Protection) Ratings

The IP Code outlines a system of classification for the protection of electrical enclosures against the intrusion

of foreign bodies ( i.e. tools, fingers, dust, etc. ) and moisture. The system of classification was specified by

the International Electrotechnical Commission and is officially designated as IEC 60529.

The rating is specified by the letters IP followed by two digits i.e. IP25, IP68, etc.

First Number - Degree of ingress protection

The first number of the IP code indicates the degree of protection against contact with moving parts and the

degree that the equipment is protected against solid foreign bodies intruding into an enclosure.

0 - No protection provided.

1 - Protection against entry of objects larger than 50 square mm.

2 - Protection against entry of objects larger than 12 square mm.

3 - Protection against entry of objects larger than 2.5 square mm.

4 - Protection against entry of objects larger than 1.0 square mm.

5 - Protection against entry of dust in sufficient quantity to prevent satisfactory operation.

6 - Complete protection against entry of dust.

Second number - Degree of moisture protection

The second number indicates the degree of protection for the equipment inside the enclosure against the

harmful entry of various forms of moisture (e.g. dripping, spraying, submersion, etc.)

0 - No protection provided.

1 - Protection against drops of water falling vertically.

2 - Protection against drops of water falling vertically when the luminaire is

tilted up to 15 degrees from its normal position.

3 - Protection from entry of water spray from angle of up to 60 degrees from vertical.

4 - Protection from entry of water splashes or spray from any direction.

5 - Protection from a low pressure jet of water in any direction.

6 - Protection against heavy seas or a strong jet of water in any direction.

7 - Protection against immersion up to 1 meter.

8 - Protection against submersion over 1 meter.

For example IP65 means:

Complete protection against entry of dust & protection from a low pressure jet of water in any direction.

LED lamp output values (Lumens) can vary dramatically depending on which values are being

quoted. The following information may assist selecting the right product for the right application.

Raw vs Effective Light Output

There are inherent losses associated with any lamp (LED, Halogen, HID or Incandescent).

The main losses are related to 3 items: Thermal Losses, Optical Losses and Assembly variation.

Thermal Losses:

The greatest challenge is thermal management of LEDs. LED Manufacturers typically measure

the light produced by their LEDs after 25 milliseconds (ms). That is equivalent to a flash bulb. It

gives a Lumen number that is the absolute maximum value. However, LEDs produce less light

as they get hotter. LEDs generate a tremendous amount of power in a relatively small area. As

the LEDs are powered for longer and longer periods of time, they typically get hotter and hotter

depending on the thermal management system. It’s not unusual for LEDs to reach over 100ºC.

For vehicle applications, most specifications require that the lamp be measured at 10 minutes

and 30 minutes to make sure that the LED temperature has stabilized. This will result in the LED

producing 10 - 20% less light than it’s advertised value.

Optical & Assembly Losses:

As light travels though an object (such as a lens), it loses intensity depending on the clarity of

the material. This is due to inherent losses internal to the material and to losses at the boundary

of the part as the light travels from air through the lens and back to air. These losses are present

whether the light source is an LED or a bulb. The losses associated with the lens material and

optics again can vary from 10 - 20%. There are also losses associated with assembly and

manufacturing variation. The LED output varies as the assembly tolerances may diminish the

overall performance from theoretical LED maximums.

Simply adding the expected values of the LED light sources together will never result in a lamp

that shines that amount of light on the ground.”

Raw

The raw Lumen output is calculated by simply taking the number of LEDs in a lamp and

multiplying by the LED rated output.

Example: 8 LEDs rated at 100 Lumen per watt

8 x 100 = 800 Lumens

Effective

The Effective Lumen output is calculated by taking the Raw Lumen value and subtracting the

Thermal, Optical and Assembly Losses.

Example:

Raw Lumens = 800

Less - Thermal, Optical & Assembly Losses = 40%

Effective Lumens = 480 Lumens

Raw Lumens8 x 100 Lumens / LED = 800 Lumens

Material Losses - light is scattered as it passes through material.

Light - is lost as it travels across boundaries (reflection).

Infrared light is defined as the band of invisible light found between microwaves and visible light on the electromagnetic spectrum

(see the illustration below). Because it is invisible to the naked eye, infrared light has found use in military and commercial

applications where visibility is desirable, but visible light is not (ex. night vision). Most applications combine an infrared lighting source

with a camera to create an infrared visibility system.

One common misperception is that infrared lighting and thermal imaging are the same thing. Infrared lighting “illuminates” an object

with invisible wavelengths of light, which can then be visualized using a camera and monitor. Thermal imaging, on the other hand,

utilizes a special camera & monitor to pick up subtle differences in surface temperature by detecting infrared radiation that’s emitted

from an object. Infrared lighting systems do not require heat emissions from an object in order to see it.

Traditional IR Lights

Traditionally, infrared lights combine an incandescent, halogen or HID lamp with a special lens that only allows the infrared

wavelengths to pass through. While relatively inexpensive and widely available, this approach has several shortfalls:

1) Because these technologies have breakable bulbs, fragile filaments, and/or sensitive electrodes, they are ill-suited for applications

where bumps, curves and pot holes will cause premature failure.

2) Bulb technology-based lights burn out relatively quickly and need to be changed. Not only do you have to purchase replacement

bulbs, but there are costs associated with changing out the bulbs and the downtime experienced while the maintenance is

performed.

3) Traditional IR lights are completely reliant on the integrity of the seals and special lens in order to be effective – should either be

broken, the light is no longer “invisible.”

IRED Lights – Superior Technology

Thanks to advances in technology, infrared emitting diodes (IREDs) provide a much more durable, efficient, and long-lasting solution

for infrared lighting applications. IREDs are a variety of light emitting diodes (LEDs) which generate light energy in only the infrared

wavelength. Because they are a solid-state technology (no breakable bulbs, fragile filaments or moving parts), they are ideal for

rough & rugged applications where shock and vibration are present. From a longevity perspective, IREDs out-live incandescent

bulbs 300-to-1, halogen bulbs 50-to-1, and HID bulbs 20-to-1. Best of all, the infrared “filtering” is built right into the diodes

themselves, so there is no reliance on breakable seals or special lenses.

C a p a b i l i t i e s

The J.W. Speaker Corporation provides research and

development, design, prototype, and manufacturing capabilities

for the world’s markets. To ensure excellence in the quality of

finished products, J.W. Speaker’s in-house capabilities are:

Virtual Reality

J.W. Speaker’s custom-designed Virtual Reality software allows

the input of varying customer parameters for lighting. Inputs

include relative placement on the vehicle, any bulb, LED or light

source option in an existing light or a design-concept light.

The program then generates optical predictions for intensity,

pattern and gradation. Reviews are done in real time and

immediately display the effects of adjustments made. Customers

are able to precisely define lighting expectations and performance

characteristics without expending additional time or the cost of

prototypes.

Once the specifications are defined, data is directly downloaded

to lighting design and application software again saving on

prototypes until our customer is confident the lighting will perform

as needed. In fact, at J.W. Speaker the Virtual Reality software

has shown a greater than 95% correlation to the final production-

run parts.

We also offer the ability to add environmental data (specific to

the customer’s market) to our custom VR application software.

Customers can then actually drive behind their beam pattern on

the road, in a field or another environment – all without leaving the

comfort of our state-of-the-art simulator room.

Product Development

J.W. Speaker engineers evaluate lighting concepts to find

cost-saving and value-added potential, and utilize Pro-

Engineering (Pro-E) models for finite element analysis.

This model is checked against equipment designs to

ensure accuracy.

Product development is structured in four main phases:

Phase 1: Styling, Concept Development, and

specification and/or regulation definition

Phase 2: Design/Engineering, product development,

prototyping, Verification

Phase 3: Tooling, Preproduction Run, process and

product validation

Phase 4: Production run

Each phase is gated & requires management sign off

approval to ensure that all customer deliverables are met.

In-House Modelling

In the concept stage J. W. Speaker uses rendering software

like “Flamingo” or “Studio Max” to help define the final look of

the product. Renderings can define day or night lit appearance,

depending on the product function. This capability has greatly

aided customers in establishing the product and vehicle look

earlier in the process, and greatly reduced “re-do” loops.

J. W. Speaker also performs quick optical feasibility during the

concept stage generating benchmark light maps and product

performance verification. J.W. Speaker maintains an in-house

three dimensional printer which is used to validate fit and

function. When required, our Pro-E models can be used to create

stereolithography (SLA) prototypes for customer use. If more

prototypes are required, cast-urethane models can be created

from the initial SLA. Upon customer request, J. W. Speaker can

make prototypes from real materials like plastic, aluminum, zinc,

magnesium or others in a 4-5 week time frame.

Optical Engineering

Customer needs and legal requirements determine the pattern

and intensity of Speaker’s lighting design. In order to design the

required lighting pattern to meet the appropriate application and

market, J.W. Speaker uses advanced optical-design software

such as “ASAP”, “Lucid Shape”, and several in- house developed

proprietary programs. J.W. Speaker then uses advanced

evaluation software such as Light Tools™ to analyze and validate

optical designs.

Optical designs often evolve during development with customers.

Speaker software allows for continual review and understanding

of the light patterns on or off the road. The virtual reality room

enables customers to experience realistic light distribution on or

of the road with all the dynamic attributes of driving.

Circuit Design & Manufacture

J.W. Speaker designs analog and digital circuitry to support all

lighting technologies (LED, HID, etc.) and I/O devices as well as

controllers, converters, etc. Most electronic circuits for LED lamps

are liner and/or switcher design. J.W. Speaker uses electronic

software like “PADS” and an in-house anechoic chamber to

minimize and prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI).

J.W. Speaker’s in-house Surface Mount Technology (SMT)

equipment produces most of the electronic boards used in our

products yielding higher quality control, greater flexibility, and

shorter lead times.
