This issue has a shortdiscussion on age-related maculardegeneration(AMD). As discussed

previously, the eye issimilar to a camera. Cataractsoccur in the lens of the eye whilemacular degeneration occurs in theretina. The macula is the area ofthe retina responsible for most

detailed vision used for reading, looking at pictures, sewing, anddriving. It is similar to the center ofthe film in a camera. AMD is one ofthe leading causes of vision loss ofpeople who are over the age of

    60. When a patient gets maculardegeneration, that area slowlybecomes unhealthy and visiondecreases--sometime mildly andother times greatly. There are twoforms of macular degeneration--wet

and dry. The wet form means thatthere is bleeding occurring in themacula. Wet AMD is less commonthan dry AMD but has the potentialto cause greater vision loss. Themore common form is dryAMD. This means that there areareas of the macula where drusen

have occurred. Drusen are yellowdeposits in the macula that lead todecrease in vision. Both forms ofAMD can be detected by dilatedeye exams. The treatment for wet

AMD may include injections in theeye or perhaps laser treatments, but there is no treatment for dryAMD. To slow the progression ofAMD, we encourage patients toeat green leafy vegetables like

spinach and kale or to take avitamin supplement as well aswear ultraviolet protection againstdamaging rays from the sun.

Prescription drug use ison the rise and so isprescription drug abuseand misuse. Mostpeople would not think

that seniors would not be involvedwith prescription drug abuse, butseniors are often prescribedmedications which can be addictive. These medications are calledcontrolled substances and are

    highly regulated by the government.

When you go to the pharmacy topick up your drugs, you may havenoticed that the rules aboutdispensing some classes of

medications are stricter than othermedications. These medicationsinclude narcotics (used formanagement of severe pain) andbenzodiazepines (used for anxietydisorders or sleep problems).

Seniors are frequently prescribedthese two classes of medications.Heres what you need to know whenyou come to the pharmacy if youuse narcotics or benzodiazepines:

Prescriptions for controlledsubstances cannot be called orfaxed to the pharmacy by yourdoctor. Your doctor may be

Prescription Drug Abuse In The Senior PopulationBy Ashlen Christie, Butler University Pharmacy Student &

John Cowan, Pharmacist & Owner Cowan Drugs & Parkside Pharmacy

willing to do this for your othermedications, but it is illegal forthem to do this with controlledsubstance.Strong narcotics cannot be

refilled. You must go see yourdoctor every time you need anew prescription.Pharmacists will not refillprescriptions forbenzodiazepines early. These

medications are often misused, and its the pharmacists job tomake sure that people arenttaking more than is prescribedby their doctor.

    Examples of Strong Narcotics:

    Morphine (MS Contin, Av-

    inza, Kadian)

    Oxycodone (Oxycontin)

    Hydrocodone (found in Lorcet,

    Lortab, Vicodin, and Norco)

    Fentanyl (Duragesic, Actiq)

    Examples of Benzodiazepines:

    Lorazepam (Ativan)

    Clonazepam (Klonopin)

    Alprazolam (Xanax)Diazepam (Valium)

    Temazepam (Restoril)
