WORKING PARTY‘In order to save on expensive cleaning and maintenance, we hold a monthlyworking party on a Saturday morning starting at 09.30.Together we clean and tidy the church, do a bit of necessary DIY or gardening, have a coffee and often some home-made goodies – and finish by about 11.30.We are enormously grateful to the few loyal helpers who turn up month aftermonth – but we desperately need a few more. Please consider putting the dates into your diary and coming along. All arewelcome – if you can do basic DIY please let us know in advance so that thechurchwardens can plan jobs in advance.Working party is almost always on the second Saturday of each month…NOTE the next ones will be on 14 JULY and 14 AUGUST at 9.30.

See you there, JAN

PEACE CANDLE IN REMEMBRANCEOF THOSE THAT WENT BEFORE

You may well have seen the ‘Peace Candle’ that was used at the WW1commemoration service on 4th• August, 2014 now in the sanctuary.• Thecandle will remain in place throughout the 4 years of commemoration andwill be lit at each Sunday and Wednesday service, as a reminder to us

all to pray for peace in the manyareas of conflict throughout theworld.• When you see the candle, please remember to pray for thosecaught up in conflict. The sign nearto the candle records the areas ofconflict most in our prayers at anygiven time (though there are other‘hidden’ conflicts that rarely appearon our televisions). If you would likean area of the world added to thelist, please speak to Rev Jacqueline.

Come in and enjoy a cupof tea or coffee after the10.00 o’clockSunday service

FIRST STEPS13TH JUNE 2018

JESUS CALMS THE STORM

It’s a bit cloudy when our naughty little sheep getsus this morning, but there are signs of brightnessso he’s hopeful that the weather will be fine forour First Steps service this afternoon. And thereis cloudy sunshine for our walk to church later. Inwe go and as always our naughty little sheep andhis friends find somewhere comfy to sit while theywatch me get things ready for our service. Lindasoon arrives and gets busy in the hall. Then Janand Anne join us and it is time to open our bigchurch doors. First in today is Mum Ruth and hertwo sons Ethan and Louis. It is really good to seethem. New baby Rupert comes along later withMum Emma, big sister Abigail and Auntie Lisa.Soon we have a nice little crowd for our service. And with jingle bells at the ready, it is time for usto begin. I light our candles and we sing that “Godis here with us, God is in the light”Today we are thinking about Jesus calming thestorm. Our naughty little sheep and his friendsbegged me to tell this story because it is one oftheir favourites. It is a bit scary but it does havean amazing ending. We sing about our God whois so strong and so mighty and Jesus certainlyproves that at the end of our story. But we mustbegin at the beginning! Jesus has been very busytalking to people and healing them when they aresick and now he needs a rest. His disciples get aboat ready for a trip across the Sea of Galilee, which is a big lake. They set sail and the lake isvery calm and still. Jesus goes to the back of theboat, finds a soft cushion, makes himselfcomfortable and drops off into a very deep sleep.Well, he is very, very tired.Everything seems fine for a little while and thedisciples are relaxing while Jesus sleeps.Suddenly the wind begins to blow and the cloudsgather. There are little waves, then bigger wavesand then very big waves. The sky becomes very

dark and thunder and lightening fill the air. Ournaughty little sheep and his friends are beginningto get anxious, a bit like the disciples! Water startsto come into the boat and as fast as the disciplestry to bale it out, the faster it comes in. The boatcreaks ominously and they’re frightened that itwill sink and they will all drown. Jesus sleeps on,in spite of the storm. The disciples don’t reallyknow what to do so they wake Jesus up, tellinghim about the dire situation that they’re in. Jesusmakes his way to the prow of the boat, holds outhis arm and says, “Peace, be still.” The wind diesaway, the storm ceases and the lake is calm onceagain. The disciples are amazed and slightlyfrightened of Jesus because of his awesomepower. They look from one to the other inbewilderment, “Who is this man that even thewinds and the waves obey him!”Our naughty little sheep and his friends think thatthis is such a great story. They too are in awe ofJesus, just like the disciples. And so should webe, too. Wow! After all that excitement and thejingling bells and our singing it is time for ourprayers and everyone is very good and quiet, aswe thank God for bringing us together and for allthe gifts that he gives to useach day. Then it is time togo into the hall for a drink, abiscuit and some time to playand chat. Our naughty littlesheep and all his friendsmake themselvescomfortable after theirrefreshments so they canwatch the children play.Priest Jacqueline will betaking our next First Stepsservice on 11 July because Ican’t be there but I hope thateveryone will come and joinher, along with our naughtylittle sheep and his friends.God Bless Rosemary Austin

PCC REPORTReport from the meeting of the PCC on10th June, to discuss arrangements forappointing new vicar.

The PCC has been busy undertakingthe necessary legal formalities for a newVicar to be appointed. No steps could betaken until Sue had left. There is then atime-table for action, set out in churchlegislation. The PCC met on Sunday, 11June to take this forward and inparticular with two important matters:

The PCC had to prepare a “ParishProfile”, a document which enables apotential applicant to see what kind ofchurch we are, what our priorities areand giving considerable detail about theParish, its place in Gravesham and ourrelationship with other churches. Thiswas prepared by a sub-committee andapproved at Sunday’s meeting. It will bemade available on our web-site as soonas we receive approval from theDiocese.

The PCC also had to select two of itsmembers to represent the parish in theprocess of interviewing and selectingour new Vicar, together with the Bishop

or his representative and the Area Dean.At our meeting Jan Osborne and AndyNailor were chosen.

Any priest currently in post elsewherewill have to give three months’ notice, although this may be varied byagreement with his/her Bishop, so wehave to accept that we may be reliant onthe sterling service of Karen andJacqueline for some time yet.

We have a strong team here in ChristChurch and a supportive congregation. We are confident that we will pass on aparish in good order and heart as wemove into the next phase of our life heretogether.

We will keep you up-to-date withdevelopments in the selection process. Please feel free to contact me if youwould like any further clarification of theabove.

For information, the PCC has agreedthat we will publish a report on PCCMeetings in the future, on a regularbasis.
