MessaGe froM the PresidentIn our first year at The New School, my wife, Lisa, and I have met many individuals like you, supporters who believe in the university’s long-standing tradition of creativity, innovation, and public engagement. You enable us to tailor academic initiatives to the needs of a rapidly changing global society and confront pressing issues with solutions that promote equality and action. Your generosity allows us to attract top faculty that demand high standards of excellence from our students, our most important asset. As the cost of higher education continues to rise, your support helps us keep education accessible. Last year, The New School awarded more than $80 million in scholarships to more than 8,000 students. Donors like you also provide vital support for thought-provoking public pro-gramming and projects. Generous contributions enabled students from Eugene Lang College to travel to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to perform From the Fire, a critically acclaimed work documenting the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911 and the labor movement that arose out of that tragedy. Our public programs included discussions with authors Jonathan Franzen and Jhumpa Lahiri and a conversation on Mexican–American relations with Arturo Sarukhan, Mexican ambassador to the United States. The University Center, the largest capital project in New School history, is rising in the heart of our campus thanks to individuals who value the school’s past and support the promise of its future. Thank you for believing in our mission. The New School is grateful to you for supporting the legacy of an institution that develops informed world citizens and creative, engaged leaders. I look forward to our continued work together and to personally thanking more of you in the months and years ahead.

… volUnteer their tiMe Intrigued by her daughter Abby’s experience at Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts, independent educational book publisher SUsan MCClanahan joined the Eugene Lang College Board of Governors so that she could work directly with the faculty and administration to nurture the institution. Like many parents of New School students and alumni, Susan brings a fresh perspective to the table. “I support the Annual Fund because it helps the school continue growing each year,” said Susan. “Abby was thrilled with the variety and depth of the courses at Lang. The smaller classes helped her hone her creative thinking skills.” Annual Fund support helps keep classes small, provides scholarships for talented students, allows the university to attract top faculty, and enables students to participate in civic engagement projects.

… Grow oUr CaMPUsPraised as “a celebration of the cosmopolitan city” by the New York Times, the new University Center will add more than 354,000 square feet of space to the New School campus when it is completed in 2013. Its facilities will include an 800-seat auditorium, state-of-the-art media centers and classrooms, science labs, art studios, and a multimedia library. Six hundred undergraduate students will live in a dormitory housed on its upper floors. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the University Center will serve as a model for sustainable design and interdisciplinary education in New York City.

… ProMote indePendent voiCes in theaterLawyer Bill ZaBel became a member of the New School Board of Trustees in 1994 after reading about the school’s founding as the University in Exile. He took a particular interest in The New School for Drama and its cultivation of young playwrights. “Theater is ahead of other media in hitting current issues in a profound and significant way,” Bill said. As a trustee of the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust, Bill designated funds for the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Playwriting Fellowships, providing tuition assistance to graduate students in the Playwriting program. The fellowships have helped finance the education of five playwrights and will fund two more. The New School is grateful for Bill’s steadfast support across the university, including funds for scholarships and gifts to the Annual Fund and the University Center.

… BUild CoMMUnity resoUrCesThanks to a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan FoUndation, Insideschools—an online guide to New York City’s public schools— has moved to The New School’s Center for New York City Affairs. New School graduate students have visited schools throughout the five boroughs, gathering detailed infor-mation for the site. “It’s crucial that it be operated by an institution that is passionate about helping New Yorkers understand the city’s educa-tion system,” said Daniel L. Goroff, program director at the foundation. “The New School’s Center for New York City Affairs is just that kind of institution.”

… nUrtUre fUtUre Jazz GreatsLong-standing Annual Fund patrons PaUl Ash and CoBi Narita are committed to supporting and cultivating New York City’s jazz scene. Their unrestricted gifts to The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music enable the division to allocate funds where they are needed most. Gifts like theirs help the school recruit world-renowned instructors, finance studio maintenance and upgrades, purchase musical equip-ment, provide scholarship support, and expand academic programming. They also provide talented students with opportunities to perform in leading cultural institutions not only in New York City but around the world.

… sUPPort exCePtional MUsiCiansPursuing a passion for music that began in early childhood, pianist and piano teacher Natalie RisBeCk studied for several years at Mannes College The New School for Music. Her fond memories of Mannes inspired her to include the school in her estate plans. The Natalie G. Risbeck Piano Scholarship, made possible by her bequest to Mannes, gives young pianists the opportunity to study with Mannes’ outstanding instructors. This endowed scholar-ship, awarded to one piano student per year, will help students in perpe-tuity, enabling future generations to receive a world–class music education.

… assist fUtUre stUdentsRecognizing the importance of The New School for Social Research in shaping who he is today, psychologist and author GUido R. Zanni decided to help future graduate students by establishing an endowed fellowship in honor of his mentor and former professor, Mary Henle. Reflecting on his time as a PhD candidate at The New School for Social Research in the 1970s, Guido said, “I could not have asked for a more thorough preparation for my first job as an assistant professor. More relevant, however, is that my graduate studies improved my analytical thinking, a basic skill for any job.” He found that Mary Henle in particular challenged students to question long-held views. As a recipient of the Hiram J. Halle Fellowship at The New School for Social Research, Guido knows firsthand how essential financial support can be for students. “This funding made a huge difference in my ability to complete my dissertation in a timely manner,” he said. “I feel passionate about giving back to the institution that gave so much to me.”

The team worked with community partners, including Habitat for Humanity Washington D.C. and the DC Department of Housing and Community Development, to construct a second house in the DC neighborhood of Deanwood. The two houses, joined together to create a two-family home, will be a model for affordable net-zero housing that can be replicated around the globe.

rePort onUniversity finanCesThe New School’s fiscal 2011 financial results demonstrate an ongoing rebound from the economic challenges of recent years. Enrollments and investments produced top–line revenue growth, outpacing expenses and contributing to an increase in total net assets of $35.9 million for the year ended June 30, 2011. Fiscal 2011 was a positive year for the school from an accounting and financial reporting perspective. The university had an increase of $6.8 million from unrestricted operating activities based on revenues of $303.1 million, resulting in a 2.2% operating margin, comparable to last year’s 4.8%. The slight decline in operating margins from 2010 to 2011 reflects continued investments in academic programs. Undergraduate enrollment growth in particular contributed to the positive results. The most significant change in the university’s balance sheet is the addition of $301 million of tax–exempt debt. The debt was incurred to partially finance construction of the University Center. The debt, along with generous contributions for the building, has allowed the project to move ahead. I am pleased to report that Moody’s Investor Service and Standard & Poor’s rated the bonds A3 and A–, respectively. Although 2011 was a difficult year for contributions in general, unrestricted giving from trustees and friends remained robust. We depend on endowment investment return for only 3% of our expenses; we have only fixed–rate, long–term debt; we have no outstanding derivative instruments with counterparty or market risk; and we enjoy ready access to cash. Our financial position is strong.

Parsons fashion BenefitThe Parsons Fashion Benefit honors innovators in the fashion industry while raising funds to support scholarships at Parsons. This annual event also gives the graduating class of fashion design students an extraordinary opportunity—a runway show in which to display their work to industry leaders. In 2011, Parsons alum Reed Krakoff ’89, the president and executive creative director of Coach, was honored for his creative design aesthetic and his visionary management of an iconic American fashion brand. The 2011 benefit raised more than $1 million for scholarships.

lAGUardia award dinnerThe LaGuardia Award Dinner recognizes individuals who exemplify and honor the legacy of New York City’s illustrious mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia. Proceeds from this annual event provide support for academic scholarships to all the university’s divisions. Last year, the LaGuardia Award was presented to Jeffrey Immelt, chairman and CEO of GE, for his commitment to education and the environment. More than $760,000 was raised at the dinner to help students finance their education.
