Carden Academy Mission:

Carden Academy of Maui is committed to

educating the whole child through a balance of

academic excellence, character development,

and enrichment through the arts in a nurturing,

small classroom setting.

True education includes an adherence to fine character traits and worthy

citizenship. It enables the student to see life in true focus and orients the

individual to the real values of life.

Aloha,

Twelve years ago, Carden Academy of Maui was founded through the efforts of

four mothers who felt the need to create an environment that fosters Mae

Carden‟s philosophy that, “Life is a joy, so should be learning.” The school

started with 30 children ranging from Kindergarten to 3rd grade and a staff of

three. We now boast a Kindergarten through 8th grade with a diverse population,

and a dedicated group of classroom, enrichment, and administrative staff.

Throughout this time of growth and change, one thing has remained constant, and

that is our mission.

“Carden Academy of Maui is committed to educating the whole child through a

balance of academic excellence, character development, and enrichment through

the arts in a nurturing, small classroom setting.” Our mission statement is simple,

yet powerful; it guides and permeates all activities at the school. Step into our

classrooms, attend our weekly assemblies, watch a special performance, go to an

athletic event, or just watch the students on campus, and you will see the dedica-

tion to teaching the “whole” child. We celebrate progress as well as achievement,

and we work with each child to not only provide a strong foundation in reading,

writing, and math, but also to develop self-confidence, perseverance, and a sense

of responsibility.

Despite the difficult economic climate, we have managed to keep our

tuition rates steady, grow our tuition assistance program, and maintain our

quality education with a maximum class size of 16 students (18 in middle school).

We are committed to our small classrooms despite a growing waiting list to join

our school. Students at Carden Academy experience a rich day filled with rigor-

ous academics, art, dance, drama, music, French, and athletics.

We could not continue to accomplish our goals without the dedication and

generosity of our donors- parents, families, staff, and community. We value every

person and business partner as part of our „ohana and treasure your gifts. These

contributions allow us to nurture our young students and help them mature into

capable, committed, and caring young men and women- our future leaders.

Sincerely,

Nina Sato Charlie Buckingham

Ka Ono Ulu Ranch generously

donated the beautiful site for our

Jamboree.

Lisena Battersby and Cheri Campbell chaired a fabulous event

where we watched polo, danced the

night away, and raised money for

our school program and tuition

assistance.

The community joined us this

year, and we proved our event is

“The Party of the Year.”

Carden families donated their time

and energy to make this the most fun and successful Jamboree yet.

Fall Festival

October 16, 2010

It all started with pumpkins.

Our very own third grade teacher,

Miss Leval, offered our school

some freshly grown organic pump-

kins from Rice Farms. We sold those pumpkins to our own families,

raised about $700, and had an idea

to have a pumpkin festival.

Two years later, in 2010, Gloria

Buckingham chaired this Fall

Festival that raised $8600. All the

Carden families volunteered, and we

enjoyed food, entertainment and

making scarecrows.

We brought community awareness

to Carden, our families had a fun

day on campus, and a new tradition

began.

Carden Country Jamboree

April 30, 2011

When you can pull together

and utilize the totality of your knowledge,

that is education.

~Mae Carden

In the Starbucks Star Poets contest, four Carden elementary

students placed in the top five in the state.

Athletic leaders: Carden girls grades K-3 & 4-5 and boys grades

K-3 took first place in the 2010 VIRR Cross-Country Champion-

ships.

Seven Carden students won the County of Maui

Water Conservation Poster contest. We had at least one winner in

each eligible category, and all the winners attended a special

ceremony with the mayor.

In the community, Carden leads the way. Our music teacher,

Mary Lynn Goode, introduced

“Wear Jeans for Japan” to Maui

county, which raised $30,000 on

Maui. Our students were invited to

the mayor’s office in recognition of

Carden’s initiative.

Each year, our PE program

particpates in the Presidential Fitness

Award program. Almost 50% of our

students in grades 3-8 were

Presidential and National Fitness

Award recipients.

Carden students under the guidance

of volunteer mom, Tammy Bexton,

formed the First Lego League team–

the Mind Reapers. The kids came in

6th place out of 27 in the state.

Once again we filled our Math

Matters team with 8 students who

represented Carden in the annual

competition on Maui.

Under renowned artist and Carden art

teacher, Pam Hayes, Carden art

students enjoyed seeing their artwork

displayed at the Maui County Fair.

Our students excel in academics, arts and in the community.

Carden Pride:

Carden fourth grade student won second place,

out of all Maui contestants, in the 11th annual

“Character Counts” essay contest.

Ten Carden students won the Maui County

annual MOA juried art contest. The award

ceremony was held at Kaahumanu Center where

their artwork was on display.

CARDEN ACADEMY OF MAUI

is an independent, non-denominational private school located in Pukalani, in Upcountry Maui.

Founded in 1998, the school serves children in Kindergarten through Eighth Grade, with one

class per grade and a maximum enrollment of 150 students.

Academic Achievement: Laying foundation stones of learning, enhanced by the ability to

interconnect academic, social, and artistic skills, sprinkled with humor and service. In addition

to Carden’s core curriculum in verbal-linguistic, logical-mathematical, and naturalist

intelligences, students are immersed in Foreign Language, Physical Education, Athletics, and the

development of 21st Century skills. Carden philosophy recognizes the unlimited potential of

each child.

Enrichment through the Arts: Recognizing artistic expression that comes from within, Carden

Academy offers a curriculum that includes Dance and Drama, Theatre Arts, Visual Arts and Art

History, and Music (vocal, instrumental, and music appreciation). In addition, school

performances throughout the year celebrate seasons, holidays, culture, and Hawaiiana.

Character Education: Instilling values and virtues to last a lifetime. Character training is a cen-

tral element of the educational scheme from the earliest years. Students learn that concern for

others enhances their own well-being and enriches their learning experiences.

Nurturing Environment: Fostering a joy of learning. The Carden Method awakens children “to

the realization that learning is a privilege, an answer to an inner need, and a very interesting

adventure” (Mae Carden). Carden’s pleasant, purposeful atmosphere serves to make school a

positive experience where children are engaged and encouraged to do their best.

Middle School Curriculum: In addition to these features, the Middle School curriculum

involves real-world problem solving projects, so that knowledge and skills are acquired through

an extended inquiry process.
