Stockton Ports outfielder Mitch LeVier is a man of few words, but with a good number of home runs.

Third in the roster with a total of 13 on the season, LeVier has proven to be a formidable opponent at the plate. We caught up with him briefly to see how he has gone about putting balls out of the park and being a member of this ball club.

How do you feel you’ve progressed as this season has gone on?

This will be my first full year, and I feel like I’ve progressed pretty well. I’ve been able to keep fresh all season long, all these games we play. But I feel like I’ve been progressing well.

What have you found works for you offensively?

Just getting a good pitch to hit at every at-bat, pretty much.

Do you approach certain pitchers dif-ferently, such as Trevor Bauer who you recently got a home run off of?

Yeah, you might pick one pitch out and be able to sit. Look for one pitch that he throws that you’re able to hit, and put a good swing on it.

What have you been working on de-fensively?

Just taking better routes. Trying to get to balls that I don’t think I can get to, pretty much.

How has your experience with the Ports been this year?

There’s a lot of good team chemistry here. We’ve had a lot of guys come in, get hurt, and all that, but all year long [the chemistry] has been really good. Good characters.

What are you hoping to take away from this season?

Just to be able to put some home run numbers up. The last couple of years of pro-ball I haven’t been able to put home runs up. There are a lot of things to work on, but that’s one of the main goals I’ve got to get to.

Some of the front office staff were discussing your “obscure” choice of walk-up songs. What kind of music do you normally listen to?

I’m into rap and reggae music. It seems whatever song they’ve been picking for me now has been working, so they can keep going with it. I’m fine with that.

Anything else Ports fans should know about you?

No, I think a lot of Ports fans know a lot about me!

Learning how to pitch

In a pitching staff as strong as the Ports, it is understandable that some guys may get overlooked, or taken

for granted. But one pitcher that fans should take notice of in the final stretch of the regular season is starting pitcher Rob Gilliam. He may not lead the start-ing rotation in ERA or strikeouts, but he has 11 wins (as of August 9), and is one of the most consistent pitchers on the Ports staff. With the second most strike outs on the team (125), Gilliam puts up a solid effort on the mound every night he takes the mound for the Ports, but is still very determined to improve his game.

“I’m making headway,” says Gilliam of his season so far. “It’s still a battle. I’m still trying to work on staying in line and working my change-up.”

Coming into the season, Gilliam had two main pitches he worked with: the first of which is his fastball, which clocks in at around 92-93 mph on average. A number, which according to pitching coach Craig Lefferts, is above the Major League average.

“With Rob, he has always had a very good fastball; he throws up to 96 MPH, which is very hard,” Lefferts observes.

“He averages 92 or 93 mph, which is above Major League average, which is about 91.”

The second pitch Gilliam says is a go-to pitch is his slider, which according to Lefferts is Rob’s go-to strikeout pitch.

“It has really become his best strikeout pitch, because it breaks away from a right-handed hitter,” Lefferts states. “It starts out in the strike zone, and as he starts to swing, the ball goes away from him very, very sharply. Most of his strike-outs this year have come on the slider.”

“I’ll mix a curveball in every now and then,” Gilliam adds.

But as the season has progressed, Gilliam has focused on developing a new pitch to add to his repertoire: the change-up.

“A change-up is a finesse pitch. It’s sup-posed to look like a fastball, but be 10, 11, 12 mph slower,” Lefferts explains. “The way you do that is by changing the grip but continuing to throw it like a fast-ball, so when it comes out of your hand the hitter sees your arm come through like a fastball, but the grip that you’re holding it makes the ball go slower.”

For a power pitcher, such as Gilliam, this can take longer than others, simply because he wants to throw everything hard.

Gilliam understands the importance of the change-up. It’s a fact that the Oak-land A’s organization has been drilling into his head the whole season. Work on the change-up. Develop the change-up. Learn to love the change-up.

“I’m really hoping I can develop my change-up, because the organization keeps telling me over and over how

Page 11: 2011 Game Day Edition 10

11

important of a pitch it is,” Gilliam states. “I see it more and more every time out. It can be a really good pitch if you throw it where you want it to go.”

Gilliam admits that sometimes he doesn’t always have perfect control of his change-up. “It’s a battle because I get a little out of control sometimes, so I just [need to stay] in control with my mechan-ics,” the righty observes.

However, even when he does get a little out of control, Gilliam is still a guy you can count on to stay calm and help get the Ports out of a jam. Despite the fact that opponents have a .320 average against Gilliam with runners on, their average drops dramatically with runners in scoring position (.265), and dips even lower with runners in scoring position with two outs (.237).

Part of Gilliam’s success in getting out of jams is his ability to slow the game down.

“[When I get in a tough situation, I] just bear down, take it one pitch at a time, and slow the game down,” Gilliam says. “If you speed up, you just dig yourself into a deeper hole, so the main thing is just slowing everything down.”

One could argue on days that Rob starts, everything moves a little slower for the righty. Gilliam is roommates with two other pitchers on the team, and is often the driver of the three, so while he arrives earlier than some of the other pitchers in the rotation, it just means that his pre-game routine occurs in the clubhouse rather than at home.

On days that Gilliam pitches, he stays mostly to himself. While the rest of the team is out stretching, running drills, and taking batting practice, Rob can be found in the clubhouse. Often sprawled out on one of the coaches, typically watching the television. His choice in programming

is always varied, from a random movie to cartoons. If you were to ever ques-tion his choice in viewing habits, you would be lucky to get much more than a couple words from him. Most often, I just get a raised eyebrow or nothing at all.

And once the rest of the team returns from batting practice, Gilliam stays away from the pre-game spread as well.

“I try not to eat very much,” Gilliam remarks. “I feel like I pitch better when there’s nothing in my stomach.”

Pretty soon, its game time. His uniform is donned, and Gilliam heads down to the field where he quietly and consis-tently develops his change-up, strikes out opponents, and earns wins.

“This year I see a lot of growth in Rob. His numbers may not be the best, his ERA is a little high,” Lefferts concludes. “But this is an offensive league, so I’m not worried about high ERAs.

“What I’m excited about with him is that he is now learning how to pitch. Instead of being a hard thrower, he’s learning how to pitch with his off-speed stuff. Because of that, this year has been a big success.”

Pink Night 2011

The Ports are hosting their 5th annual Pink Night supporting St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Breast Health Ser-

vices on Friday, August 26. All proceeds from this event, including $1 from every ticket sold go back to St. Joseph’s.

In 2010, over $7,000 was raised for this great cause, more than doubling what was raised in 2009. The Ports need your help…they can’t raise this money with out YOU!

The Ports will be hosting a pre-game “Bombs 4 Bombs Home-Run-a-thon” prior to the game at 7:05 PM. Gates will open at 5:05 PM and the event will begin at 5:30 PM. Come early and watch local talent, as well as Ports coaching staff, hit home runs in to the outfield at Banner Island Ballpark. Oakland Athletics great Rickey Henderson participated last year and we hope to have him again this year!

The Ports will be taking pledges per home run hit during the event. You can donate any dollar amount that you would like…all will be going back to St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Breast Health Services! Last year 48 home runs were hit, so we need to top that this year!

We will also be selling pink paper base-balls for our Pink Wall. Purchase a base-ball, write a message, and the baseball will be displayed on Pink Night.

Please go to the Ports Guest Relations booth to pick up a pledge sheet & pink baseballs. You can also visit our website at www.stocktonports.com for a pledge sheet.

If you have any questions, please con-tact Community Relations Manager Margaret Sacchet at (209) 644-1900 or [email protected].

Help the Ports make this night something to remember. Enjoy a fun summer night at the ballpark and help raise money for a great cause at the same time.

Q&A with Myrio Richard

25

Through the ups and downs of the Ports’ past few home stands, out-fielder Myrio Richard has proved

to be an offensive asset in Stockton’s lineup. Batting .294 over the season, and well over .300 in the past 10 games, Richard says he is actually more comfort-able at the plate when he has the op-portunity to drive in a run. We caught up with him to find out how the season has been going for him, and what he works on to get those hits for his team. How do you feel you’ve progressed through this season? I feel like I’ve progressed pretty good. Started off good, kind of got slow in between, but I’m feeling pretty good just trying to maintain through this last month. You’ve been hitting very well lately, is there anything specific you attribute that to? Just hard work, I’m always in the cages, always trying to critique my hitting and my game with Mac [hitting coach Brian McArn]. Plus I have some extra added incentives from a couple of people. Plus I have an extra little secret, but I can’t tell you that one! (laughs). Do you have a different approach at the plate when there are runners in scoring position?

Not really, I just feel more relaxed, actu-ally. I like hitting with runners in scoring position, I just think it makes my job easier when I come up and there’s a run-ner on second or third and less than two outs. I just feel relaxed. You’ve also been a successful base stealer (21). What do you attribute that to? Stolen bases is just like hitting. When you get in the groove and start running, it kind of flows. I can get them in bunches. I haven’t been running lately though, I haven’t had the opportunity the way the games have been going, but hopefully I can start that back up again. How has your overall experience with the Ports been? It’s been good, it’s been fun. We’ve had our ups and downs, but it’s alright, as long as we get back together and start picking it up as a team before the playoffs start, so we can get back into that nice groove we had when we had our winning streak. But it’s been fun. It’s a good group of guys, and it’s been good. What do you hope to take away from this season? Just gaining more experience, getting more knowledgable about the game. Just learn as I keep going up throughout the system so there won’t be anything that I haven’t been prepared for. Is there anything else you think Ports fans should know about you? Just stay tuned. I ain’t through yet! Just stay tuned, we ain’t through.

Ports center fielder, Michael Choice, had himself an impressive month to capture the title of TOPPS Cali-

fornia League Player of the Month for the month of July, Minor League Base-ball announced on Monday. This caps off an impressive month of July in which Choice led the Ports in batting average, home runs, and RBIs as well as securing a Cal League Player of the Week honor.

As the TOPPS California League Player of the Month, an honor voted on by all of the California League manag-ers, Choice dominated the opposition throughout July. In 22 July games, Choice posted an impressive .416 bat-ting average, blasted 10 home runs and drove in 22 runs.

Choice was a first round pick, and tenth overall, for the Oakland Athletics in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft. Choice cur-

rently leads the Ports in home runs (27) and RBIs (70), and is among team leaders with a .293 batting average. Choice is also among league leaders in the Cal League in home runs (1st-27), extra base hits (4th-52), and total bases (3rd-218).

This is Choice’s first TOPPS Player of the Month honor; he had previously earned Cal League Player of the Week honors for the week of July 4-10. 2011 marks Choice’s first full season of professional baseball. Last season Choice played 27 games with Short Season Vancouver Ca-nadians. He batted .284 with 10 doubles and seven home runs.

Fans can head out to Banner Island Ballpark throughout August to watch the TOPPS Cal League Players of the Month take the field with the rest of the division-leading Ports!

With just under a month left in the season, the Stockton Ports check in with the rest of the Oakland Athletics Affiliates as they enter the home stretch and make their final push for playoff contention!

In Triple-A, the Sacramento River Cats continue their domi-nance of the Pacific Coast League South Division. As of Au-gust 9, the Cats Magic Number was at 16. To find a team’s Magic Number, simply compute the number of games yet to be played + add one - subtract the number of games ahead in the loss column of the standings from the closest opponent. Leading the charge for the Cats is Athletics’ top prospect Michael Taylor, who, as of August 9, had hit .393 over his last 10 games to raise his season batting average to .299, which leads the team. Also having good fortune in the PCL is Ports shortstop Dusty Coleman. Coleman, who was called up after Cliff Pennington was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy, has made eight appearances with the Cats, bat-ting an even .300 with a double and three RBI.

In Midland, the Double-A RockHounds continue their push in the second half. Former Port Michael Spina is coming off a multi-game suspension after a confrontation with an umpire to end July. Spina currently holds the second best batting average (.288) on the team, behind Wes Timmons, who is batting .398 through 30 games. As a whole, Midland is second in the Texas league with a .274 team average.

Out in Burlington, it’s was a good week for Bees hitter A.J. Kirby-Jones, who was named Midwest League Player of the Week for the week of July 25-31. Kirby Jones went 8-22 with four home runs and 12 RBI in six games. Kirby-Jones is the first Bee this season to garner Player of the Week honors.

In Vermont, things look very promising for the Short Season Lake Monsters, who had five players named to New York-Penn League All-Star team. Catcher Nick Rickles, infield-ers Chih-Fang Pan and Sean Jamieson, along with relief pitchers Tanner Peters and Jeff Urlaub were all named to the All-Star team. According to the Lake Monsters website, Rickles has hit .348 (24-for-69) with six doubles, two triples and 13 RBI over 21 games since joining the Lake Monsters on July 3rd. Pan is hitting .327 (37-for-113) with 15 runs and 16 RBI in 28 games for Vermont. Jamieson is hitting .257 (43-for-167) with six doubles and 12 RBI. He is tied for the league-lead with 18 steals and is fourth in the New York-Penn League with 28 walks. The shortstop has also made just six errors and has a .966 field percentage in 43 games.
