There has been no team hotter in baseball than the Stockton Ports have been in June and the begin-

ning of July. Since June 11, the Ports have won 20-of-22 games (through July 7). Over the course of that span, the Ports have compiled an impressive list of team and individual streaks that have helped lift the Ports to victory.

After struggling in May, the Ports were looking to rebound with a big month of June. And the Ports delivered, giving their fans a run that was not matched at any level of baseball. Bats started to connect, pitching stayed hot and their defense started to click.

“You just can’t stop working,” says manager Webster Garrison. “Things may not be going as well as we want it to, because we were playing a lot better earlier, but we just have to work through it.”

And work they did. After failing to win a series since May 5-8 against Lake Elsinore at home, the Ports came home to face two incredibly offensive teams to start June: the High Desert Mavericks and the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. Both were at the top of the league of-fensively and were looking to continue their mashing ways against the strug-

gling Ports. And that’s when it clicked. The Ports swept both teams. After that, the Boys of Banner Island were off to the races, and Garrison knew it.

“I was excited early, it was early. It was that first homestand we came back from Bakersfield and we played the south divi-sion teams,” Webby recalled of when he knew things had clicked. “Guys started putting good at-bats together, and we continued to pitch well and we started playing some real good defense. It just all came together.”

And did it ever come together. As a team, the Ports raised their batting average from .248 to .276, and blasted 25 home runs during the 17-game win streak. Players such as Michael Choice, Rashun Dixon, Dusty Coleman and Mi-chael Gilmartin all seemed to find their stride at the same time, and once one guy got hot, another followed.

Coleman, who had struggled with his timing early in the season, was one of the first guys to get hot, going on a 14-game hitting streak that included 21 hits, six doubles, a triple and three home runs. Oh yeah, and he was hitting .404 during the streak.

“[The hit streak] was good.” Coleman said. “I was definitely coming off strug-gling a little bit. I just got a little more consistent at the plate, and contributing every game was nice. It’s definitely some-thing you try not to think about but it’s a good thing when it happens.”

Following in Coleman’s footsteps, Mi-chael Choice got equally hot. The former first round pick of the A’s has a 29 game on-base streak (through July 7), which is the second longest streak in the Califor-nia League this season. And Choice has

Lets Go Streaking

one other rather impressive streak: a five-game home run streak that went from July 2 to July 6.

“It was a lot more fun, easier to come to the park every day with no stress,” Said Choice of all the streaks. “Basically I’m just implementing what [hitting coach] Brain McArn and I have been working on, just staying with the same approach. In baseball you might be locked in, hit-ting baseballs right at people, or things just don’t roll your way some days, you can’t just change your approach. So I’m just staying with my same approach no matter what happens. ”

One thing that everyone on the team stresses however is that it was a team effort on the offensive side that helped propel the Ports past their opposition.

“It’s just everybody,” said Garrison. “We weren’t relying on one guy. One day it was this guy, the next another guy would step up. When everybody is going at the same time, it’s just awesome to see.”

While the team effort on offense has helped the Ports surge in June, strong pitching also played a key role in the length of the streak. Ports starting pitchers were phenomenal through the streak, capturing 10 of the 17 wins. But it was the work of the bullpen that truly impressed their manager.

“Let’s talk about big contributions [from the bullpen]. I mean that bullpen has been tremendous all year. Those guys have been doing an outstanding job,” Garrison said in praise of the pen. “Sometimes they have to come in early and get overworked a little bit, and no one is complaining. All they say is ‘I want the ball.’

“That’s good to hear, because sometimes in the beginning of the year when the bullpen gets over worked, they aren’t going to say they don’t want the ball, but you can see it in their eyes like ‘Man, I’m up here again?’ But those guys want the ball, and it showed. They came out and kept putting up zeros. They kept us in games that we were losing to give us a chance to win and when we were winning they just closed the door.”

No one takes individual credit for the streak, be it from the guy that is hitting the bombs to the guy that is shutting the door on the opponent. And because of this cohesive sense of team togetherness, they had the chance to revel in a feeling that not many teams have had the oppor-tunity to experience: a streak that makes people stand up and take notice.

“It feels good,” Garrison said. “I’ve never been part of a 17-game win streak, like I told the guys when we finally lost. As a player, coach, or manager, so that was fun for me. And none of the guys have ever been a part of a streak like that. That was fun for me, I’ve never been a part of anything like that. We just always found ways to win.”

Right-handed pitcher James Sim-mons has been on a long road to recovery. Simmons had been a first

round Oakland A’s pick in 2007. In his 2009 season with the Sacramento River Cats, he injured his shoulder, and ended up missing the entire 2010 season trying to identify the cause of the injury and then resolve it. Now he’s back on the mound, having made his first start with the Ports on June 30, when he went 3.1 innings giving up no runs and just one hit. Catch up with Simmons as he gets back into the swing of things after his rehab process!

How did you feel about your first start with the Stockton Ports?

I was real excited. I had that long layoff because of the injury, and was out for close to a year and a half. So it was really exciting to get back out there and have some success right off the bat. I’ve been working real hard on this rehab process so it was kind of nice to see the reward, the light at the end of the tunnel.

Can you tell me a little more about the injury?I got hurt at the end of the 2009 season

in Sacramento. I rehabbed that for three weeks. It was my shoulder, and it got better and I went and pitched in the fall league in Arizona. After that they told me to take a month and a half off, no throw-ing, and just give my arm a rest. I started getting ready for spring training in 2010, and I started playing catch and it just felt like someone was stabbing a knife into my shoulder. I told them I wanted to get an MRI, and I got the MRI and it came back negative, it didn’t show any tears or anything like that, it just said I had some inflammation, and that put me on some anti-inflammatory medicine and sent me to physical therapy. I did that for a month and it didn’t get any better, so they gave me a cortisone shot. That didn’t work, and I requested another MRI, because I knew something was wrong, but it just wasn’t showing up. So I got the second MRI and it showed a little white spot on the supraspinatus tendon, which the doc-tor said wouldn’t be causing the pain I was having. So they gave me a PRP injec-tion and I rehabbed that for three weeks, and that didn’t work either. So finally I called up out head trainer, and I let him know that none of that stuff worked, and I should probably do the arthroscopic surgery and find out what the problem was. So they did that almost a year ago. They went in there and I had a frayed labrum, frayed supraspinatus tendon, and bursitis. So they shaved off the fraying, took out the bursa, and I’ve been rehab-bing it ever since.

That must have been frustrating! How did you stay motivated throughout the process?

Yeah, it started getting frustrating. The doctors kept telling me to take this anti-inflammatory and give it a month and you’ll be good to throw. And so I’d go out and throw about 15 pitches, then

throw one straight into the ground and grab my shoulder because it hurt so bad. So after about four or five times doing that, I finally got a little frustrated and said there’s something wrong, because I can’t throw at all! I mean, I stayed optimistic throughout the whole thing, but it was tough. The hardest part, the whole time I was in physical therapy before I had the surgery was not knowing what was wrong with me. It would have been a lot easier for me to know, okay, this is what’s wrong with you, let’s go ahead and take the proper procedure to get it fixed. So that was the hardest part, and once I had the surgery, I knew it could only get better from there, because I knew exactly what was wrong and fixed it. Or they said they fixed it, so all my trust was in them, that they did the right thing, and they did. And so it could only go uphill from there.

How did it feel coming here to Stock-ton and getting to start again?

I was really excited. Obviously I want to get back to where I was, but I was just excited to be back on the field, because you never know how long you have to play. I’m real fortunate that it wasn’t anything serious and I’m able to come back out here and do what I love.

What goals do you have for this season?

I’d like to just keep progressing and getting better. I know my velocity needs to get a little better, and I think that’ll come as time goes by, and it’s only been a year since I had the surgery. So I feel like I’m on track, and obviously I just want to stay healthy. That’s the main goal.

Being from California, does playing here give your family a chance to catch your starts?I think we’re in High Desert for this next road trip, and that’s about an hour from my house, and I’m scheduled to pitch, so my family’s going to make the drive and watch me. They haven’t really been able to see me throw much since I’ve been in pro-ball because our AA team is in Mid-land, and AAA is in Sacramento, and they work, so it’s hard for them to find time to get out to a game. They probably come once or twice a season. So it’ll be nice for them to be able to drive an hour and see me play. And I know they’re dying to see me play since I missed a year and a half. My dad’s favorite time of the year was watching me play or listening to it on the Internet broadcast, so he’s real excited.

Is there anything else you think Ports fans should know about you?

I’m definitely here to help the team win. Whether I’m here for the rest of the year, or I get sent out, that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going go out there and compete and give the team a chance to win. I know that’s what the fans like to see.

Ports shortstop, Dusty Coleman, has come alive the past week to capture the title of California League Player

of the Week for the week of June 27-July 3, Minor League Baseball announced on Tuesday. Coleman hit .458 in seven games with four doubles, a triple, a home run, eight RBIs, eight runs, and three stolen bases on the week.

Coleman missed the 2010 season with a wrist injury, but got off to a good start with the Ports to begin the 2011 season. In April Coleman batted .299 with five doubles and a home run. After struggling in May, hitting just .171, Coleman found his swing and raised his batting average from .211 to .244 in 14 games. Cole-man is currently on a 14-game hit streak heading into the July 5 game against High Desert after going 2-for-5 with the game-winning two-run home run in the Independence Day game in Adelanto.

This is Coleman’s first Player of the Week honor. He had been previously named to the Midwest League (Low-A) mid-season All-Star team in 2009. While with Kane County in 2009, Coleman hit .254 with 22, 4 triples, 8 home runs, and 42 RBIs.

ones that most people don’t realize that if you don’t have them working right, then they aren’t going to have as much fun as they’re supposed to.”

Ports fans know Rod better as Hot Rod, the Stockton Ports’ on-field MC. He is the voice and personality of the Ports game day entertainment.

“My job is just to make sure that when the fans aren’t watching the game that they are still enjoying their time at the ballpark,” he said. “I think everybody loves the idea of what we do. I think there are some people that are old school and could do without the on-field activities, but I think for the most part everybody identifies with what we are trying to do. We are trying to get up and act a little goofy, and keep the between innings a little more entertaining. I really think the crowd feeds on that.”

The team runs several games and pro-motions throughout each game, from the “Asparagus Race,” to “Dance For Your Dinner,” to “Super Catch.”

“My favorite promotion is probably Super Catch, because it is with a sling-shot,” said Promo Squad member Ste-ven Allyn. “And I like to see the kids run and miss… I mean catch the ball!”

The Promo Squad also has the help of everyone’s favorite mascot, Splash. Splash gets involved in the games as well, encouraging the participants and the Promo Squad to play and have fun.

“Oh I am the best, best friend of Splash,” said Allyn. “I know Splash way personal.”

Stockton Ports fans know that when they come to Banner Island Ball-park, they’ll be getting more than

just a great game of baseball. From the moment you step through the gates, you will be greeted by a team of people who will help ensure that you have a good time throughout the game. They are the Stockton Ports Promo Squad. “Their biggest responsibility is, first of all, to greet fans,” said Margaret Sacchet, the Ports’ Community Relations Man-ager. They’re very welcoming at the front gates. Their other main responsibility is to handle all the on-field promos. They have to get ready pre-game, put out all the supplies, and makes sure we have everything. Then, they have to execute all the promos on the field, and it’s impor-tant because a lot of them have sponsors. It’s important that they do them correctly, they’re on time, and on and off the field quickly.”

This behind-the-scenes team works throughout the game to ensure the crowd is involved and having fun. They only have so much time between innings for promotions, and must work efficiently to keep the fans entertained.

“The Promo Squad keeps things mov-ing,” said Rod Villagomez. “They are the

the off-season. Every year, the Stock-ton Ports recruit a group of energetic people, who have shown that they have the personality and drive to get the crowd motivated. Sacchet says that this year’s group is one of the best Promo Squads she’s seen.

“The more energetic they are, the more energetic the crowd is,” said Sacchet. They think, ‘Oh, this kid is acting silly, so it’s okay if I act silly too.’ They’re defi-nitely a positive influence.”

“Lose you inhibition,” encourages Vil-lagomez. “I would say just come in, and forget that you are an adult, forget that you have a job, forget that you have responsibilities. Come into the ballpark, expect to have fun, and interact. Don’t be too full of yourself thinking ‘Oooh, I’m at a baseball game and I must portray this level of maturity.’ Come in and act like a kid! Cheer for the people down on the field, laugh at something you think is funny. Don’t come in and think you have to be serious for nine innings.”

Look out for the Promo Squad when you visit Banner Island Ballpark and don’t be afraid to interact – it’s what they want you to do! Check out the brand new signs they use during the games and get

loud with them!

The promotions are really fun,” said Promo Squad member Amanda Bentley. “Even though people say, ‘Oh, I’ll do it next time.’ No! Do it this time, because it’s fun!”

There are games and promotions for fans of any age. To participate, all you have to do is find a Promo Squad mem-ber in a peach-colored shirt before the game, and ask if you can get in on the fun! The team will be more than happy to get you involved!

As the Ports continue their domination of the California League in the second half, we catch up with the rest of the A’s affiliates from Sacramento to Vermont.

The first-place Triple-A Sacramento River Cats hit its big-gest speed bump of the season at the beginning of July, going on an eight-game losing streak which dropped their record to 50-36, just 4.0 games ahead of the Las Vegas 51s. The Cats pitching staff continues to be dominant in the PCL, posting a collective ERA of 4.35.Jermaine Mitchell, who was called up to Sacramento on July 2, has made an instant impact with the Cats. Through four games, Mitchell is hitting .368 with two doubles, three RBIs and two stolen bases. Mitchell has a hit in all four games he has played.

In the Texas League, the Midland RockHounds have com-piled a 27-43 record. They have several new additions to their roster for the second half as Ports pitchers AJ Griffin, Brett Hunter, and Andrew Carignan, as well as Ryan Ortiz have all been called up to Midland in the past two weeks. Griffin, who started the season in Low-A Burlington, is cur-rently 1-0 with a 4.76 ERA. Ortiz, who was red hot for the Ports before being called up, is hitting .357 through four games with the RockHounds.

The Burlington Bees of Burlington, Iowa, have had a rela-tively slow start to the second half after claiming the First Half Crown in the Midwest League, posting a 6-8 record. New to the Bees is Jose Crisotomo, who has gotten a solid start through 13 games, batting .293 with a double. A’s fans should also keep an eye on Jonathon Joseph, who made the move to the bullpen in mid-June and is 1-0 with a 5.06 ERA in the relief position.

Finally, in Short Season Vermont, the Lake Monsters have started the month of July off to a hot start, posting a 5-2 record. New to the Lake Monsters is Nick Rickles, who was promoted from the AZL A’s after hitting .304 with two doubles and two triples. In his first two games with the Lake Monsters, RIckles has been solid, posting a .333 bat-ting average, and looks to continue to make an impact.
