Head Coach Ed Moore

Barnwell High head coach Eddie Moore wasn’t prepared for what happen to his football team last season.

In the previous season, the Warhorses made huge strides, going 8-4, including a 1-1 in the playoffs.

Last season, the Warhorses took a step backward with a 4-6 regular season record. Three of those losses by a total of 13 points.

But a new season, brings renewed hopes for the War-horses with eight starters returning on both sides of the ball.

Moore said he expects bet-ter results this year.

“Last season, we were a better football team than what our record showed,” Moore said.

“We definitely have the talent to bounce back. We had a very good off season

and the kids are motivated and eager to get better.”

One of the positives that came out of the 2012 season for the Warhorses was the discovery of Shakur Chi-solm as a true “home run” threat out of the backfield.

As a freshman, Chisolm torched opposing defenses for 1,321 yards and 11 touch-downs.

Chisolm is a powerful slasher, who will burst through a hole and bounce

runs to the outside. The Warhorses also pos-

sess three other proven backs in Tyrin Williams, Kenyon Hayward and Detravain Johnson.

Williams does a good job of darting through openings and finding cut back lanes. Hayward and Johnson are most effective in short yardage situations.

Junior Jevonte Dun-bar returns for his sec-ond tour of duty at the quarterback position. Dunbar is arguably the most athletic signal caller in the region.

Dunbar ’s big-gest attribute is his ability to elude defenders and throw on the run. William Barnes will be the backup.

The receivers will be Jalen Smith, Greg Singleton, Mar-cus Spann, Alex Donaldson and tight end Charles Wil-liams. Williams is a strong blocker who made several big catches last season.

Going into spring prac-

tice, Barn-w e l l ’ s offensive line was

c o n -sidered a

strength. That, however, changed

when guard Nathan Still suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury dur-ing the spring drills

Despite the loss, the War-horses remained a solid blocking unit with return-ers Charlton Bradford and Malcolm Hammonds at

the tackles. Preston Guest at the center position and guards Will Hair and Neal Wright.

“It’s all about being con-sistent and executing,” Moore said. “We were in all of our games last season, but we just didn’t do a very good job of finishing.”

On defense, the Warhors-es standard 5-2 set features a lot of movement along the line.

The defensive front will consists of Charles Williams and Harvey Garrett at the ends.

The run stoppers inside include Marcus Spann, De-travian Johnson and Charl-ton Bradford.

An active hard-hitting group of linebackers will be Regan Guest, Preston Guest, Jessie Brown and Will Lott.

The Warhorses have All-Region candidates in the secondary with returners Tyrin Williams and Dondre Adkins at the safety posi-

tions and Jevonte Dunbar and Shakur Chislom at the cornerback positions.

Adkins, who has deliv-ered some vicious hits over the last two seasons, is very good in run support and pass coverage. Last season, he finished with 14 pass

break-ups.Reserves in the secondary

includes Kenyon Hayward, Jamari Dunbar, Greg Single-ton and William Barnes

On special teams, Jevonta Dunbar will punt and kick. The return specialists are Tyrin Williams, Kenyon

Hayward and Shakur Chi-solm.

“I’m really encouraged about what I’ve seen so far in practice and the scrim-mages,” Moore said. “We believe we have the pieces in place to compete for a title in our region.”

All-Region candidate Dondre Adkins, left, returns at safety for the Warhorses.

Blackville-Hilda High legendary football coach David Berry returns for his 25th season with the team. Berry has averaged 10 wins a season.

Familiar faces can been seen all around the Hawks’ Nest for the Blackville-Hilda High (last season, 7-5 overall, 1-1 playoffs) football.

With only five starters graduating from last year’s team, Blackville-Hilda High will have 14 lettermen re-turning, including eight on offense.

Blackville-Hilda High head coach David Berry said the team has potential to be good.

“The learning process continues for our team,” Berry said.

“We’re sluggish in some areas so there’s plenty of room for improvement. We have a good group of returners, but a lot of them are inexperienced.”

The Hawks will look to

find a new leader for their offense after the graduation of two-year starter Darren Jones. Jones went 15-9 as a starter for the Hawks.

After several rotations at the position during the first three weeks, senior Chris-tian Sanders has emerged as the starter.

Sanders played four po-sitions for the Hawks last season, including tailback and receiver.

What Sanders brings to

the table is athleticism and competitive fire. Last sea-son, Sanders accounted for 637 yards, including 456 rushing.

“Christian Sanders is very versatile. He gives us a lot of options at quarterback,” Berry said.

In the backfield, Berry has a stable of good runners at his disposal.

Junior halfback Darren Ford tops the group. Last season, Ford was second on the team in rushing with 487 yards and five touch-downs.

Ford shows wiggle to make tacklers miss in the open field and will drop his shoulder and run off a defender.

The backfield also in-cludes Barry Armstrong Jr. Jaloni Jones, Trevin Rivers, Jarvis Washington, Kendrick Staley, Carl Williams and Richard Bell.

Armstrong rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown last

season.On the offensive line

Hawks seek to replace two starters.

The interior, however, looks solid with return-ers Darius Ephriam and Chris Boiser at the guards. Ephriam, who injured his shoulder in the playoffs against McCormick High, is one of the top guards in the region.

Ephriam gets into posi-tion well and, when run blocking, drives his legs and finishes the block.

Rounding out the line are Dayshawn Bamberg and Noah Villalobos at the tackles and Hunter McCoy at center.

“This group is working hard and coming along. Hopefully, we’ll get where we need by opening week,” said Berry.

At the wide receiver posi-tion talent is plentiful with returners Dwayne Prophet, Justin Hope, Montrel Isaac,

newcomer Isaiah Harrison and tight end Ricky Wil-liams.

The leaders of the unit, Hope and Prophet differ in style.

Hope is more of a posses-sion receiver, the player to look for on third down.

Prophet is the deep threat. Last season, he av-eraged 17.4 yards per catch. Prophet’s best performance came Sept. 14 in a 29-26 win over Wagner-Salley High.

In that contest, Prophet had three catches, includ-ing a 35-yard touchdown grab.

On defense, the Hawks allowed 19.3 points per game last season. Look for those numbers to be lower this season with seven re-turners.

On the defensive line, the Hawks welcome back four starters in Ricky Wil-liams, Chris Boiser, Darius

Ephriam and Justin Hope. Hope is the most productive of the group.

Last season, he recorded 69 total tackles, including six for losses.

The linebacking group is the best unit with return-ers Trevin Rivers, Jaloni Jones, Andre Jones, Jeramiah Priester and Darren Ford.

Rivers, who plays with a mean streak, is the most athletic of the group. He racked up 48 tackles, includ-ing a team-leading 17 on special teams. Andre Jones is another player who has stood out on the unit.

Jones has been one of the

better looking defenders so far. He recorded seven tack-les and a fumble recovery in the Aug. 9 scrimmage against Midland Valley High.

In the secondary, Juwan Jenkins, Christian Sanders and Dwayne Prophet all return.

Reserves include Bar-ry Armstrong, Cameron Brown, Carl Williams and Isaiah Harrison.

On special teams, senior Joseph Staley will kick and punt. Armstrong led the Hawks in returned yardage last season with 26.2 yards a return.

The Williston-Elko High Blue Devils hope to con-tinue their winning ways under head coach Dwayne Garrick.

In six seasons at the helm, Garrick has guided the Blue Devils to a 73-12 record, including four region titles and a state championship.

This season, the Blue Dev-ils have 15 of 22 position players returning.

Those numbers give Gar-rick a good chance of being in the region title hunt.

“Although we lost quite a bit of experienced players, we had a good group back” Garrick said. “ I believe our strength areas are offensive and defensive lines. Offen-

sively, we’ll mix it up a bit this season. However, our main focus is still running the football.”

For the third year in a row, Dalton Mundy returns at quarterback for the Blue Devils. Mundy is a pocket passer, who is very accurate

throwing the intermediate routes. Last season, Mundy completed 41 of 92 passes for 725 yards and nine touchdowns.

At running back the Blue Devils will have to find a way to fill the void left by Jarius Jenkins, who transferred to Hunter-Kinard-Tyler High during the summer.

Jenkins was the catalyst for the Blue Devils’ ground attack last season with 1,593 yards rushing and 22 touch-downs.

Due to his departure, the Blue Devils will look for a more balanced attack with a talented crop of backs in Antonio Coleman, Andrew Milligan, Marcell Wright, Faheem Richberg and De-von Fagans.

Richberg has the most ex-perience of the group, rush-ing for 432 yards and two

touchdowns last season. “This is a group that has

shown a lot of improvement during our scrimmages. We have several backs that have shown the ability to make big plays in the ground game,” said Garrick.

In the receiving depart-ment, the Blue Devils will have Laurence Phoniex at tight end. The wideouts in-clude Zhane Snider, Dalton Barrett, Da’Twon Owens and Christian Sapp.

The offensive line returns experience at four of the five spots. The anchor of the group is right tackle Taylor Hearn. Hearn is one of the best run and pass blockers in the state.

Hearn, who has commit-ted to Clemson University, has been the driving force on a line that has produced three 1,000 rushers over the

past two seasons.Joining Hearn will be All-

Region candidate Shawn Chavis at left tackle. Dan-iel Smith and Jacob Vargo return at the guards with Justin Lott the at center spot.

On defensive, the Blue Devils operate in the 5-2-4 alignment.

The front five consists of Jerome Evans and Andrew Milligan at the ends. Inside the Blue Devils will have Caleb Craig at the nose and Taylor Hearn and Daniel Smith at the tackles.

The backups include Lawrence Phoenix, Wyatt Rhoad, Jacob Vargo and Shawn Chavis.

A new look linebacking group will consist of Chris-tian Sapp, Jacob Vargas and

Page 12: Football Preview 2013

Blue Devils, continued from page 11Andrew Milligan. A player that has really shined during the first two weeks of prac-tice is Milligan. In scrim-mages against Allendale-Fairfax and Wade Hampton, he has racked up 18 tackles and two forced fumbles.

A Blue Devils secondary which was vulnerable, sur-rendering three touchdown

passes in last year ’s first round playoff loss to Ware Shoals High, should be bet-ter this season with the addi-tion of Trimayne Whetstone and Da’Twon Owens at the corners.

The safeties will be return-ers Antonio Coleman and Faheem Richberg.

The backups are Nate

Cunningham, Ji’Quez Finey and Keyshawn Ogletree.

On special teams, Antonio Coleman, Andrew Milligan and Jerome Evans will split time as the returners. Taylor Hearn will handle the punt-ing and place kicking chores. The returners will be Anto-nio Coleman, Devon Fagans and Faheem Richberg.

Senior Taylor Hearn, top, will help fuel the Blue Devils’ pass rush.

Jefferson Davis Academy’s young football team (8-man, 4-6 last season) of a year ago, which saw many freshman and sophomores take on primary roles, is now a year older and more importantly, more seasoned.

JDA head coach Curt Ott said he’s excited about his team chances this season.

“In terms of numbers, this is the best group of player I’ve had since I’ve been here,” Ott said.

“We have depth at almost every position. We have the potential to be really good if we play hard and execute.”

In the backfield players like Brandon Bennette, Ross Kinard, Colton Pritchard and Dalton Bell will have the

daunting task of trying to replace last season running phenomenon Trent Garvin. Garvin ran for more than 1,400 yards and accounted for 75 percent of the of-fense.

Expect Bennette and Ki-nard to get most of the touch-es out of the group. Bennette is a powerful runner, who

excels in short yardage situ-ations and is a good receiver out of the backfield. Kinard, who runs hard and low to the ground.

Against Patrick Henry Academy in the Aug. 17 jam-boree, Kinard rushed for 56 yards and two touchdowns in just one quarter of work.

Ott said several backs have looked good running the ball so far in August drills.

“Right now, we don’t have a clear cut starter at run-ning back. Last season Trent Garvin was our workhorse. This season, I think we’ve can get the same type of production, just with more balance,” said Ott.

At the quarterback posi-tion, Colin Thomas takes over after splitting duty as a receiver and running back last season.

Thomas is pretty accurate on his intermediate throws.

He does a very good job of selling the run well on play action fakes. Colton Pritchard will serve as the backup.

The offensive line will be the strength of the unit with three returning starters. Cameron Polston and Curtis Boiling are the guards. Law-son Holland will be at center and new comer Wesley Ott is at tackle.

Polston and Holland de-veloped into two the Raiders best blockers last season. Both players do a very good job of using their size to overpower defenders at the point of attack.

A reliable group of receiv-ers include Will Gee and McKenzie Webster.

Gee, who is small in stat-ue, has good speed and playmaking ability as a re-ceiver and returner. Last season, Glee had 12 catches for 121 yards.

Webster is one of the best blocking pass catchers in the region. He uses his body well to shield defenders off the ball in traffic.

On defense, the team has made steady improvement under Ott. Look for that trend to continue with six starters returning.

The front line will consist of Cameron Polston and McKenzie Webster at the ends.

The inside guys will be Hayden Kaigler and Curtis Boiling.

The starting lineback-ers are Ross Kinard at the weakside and Wesley Ott at strongside.

In the secondary, the Raid-ers have two very good cov-er corners in Colin Thomas and Will Gee.

On the special teams, Dal-ton Bell and Colton Pritchard will be the top returners. Gee will punt and placekick.

The 2013 season is all about unfinished business for the Allendale-Fairfax High football team.

Under the leadership of head coach Eddie Ford, the Tigers had a remarkable season last year.

The Tigers went unde-feated (9-0) and captured the region title before be-ing upset by Whale Branch High in the opening round of the class A playoffs.

“There’s definitely still a sour taste in our mouth of how we ended last season,” Ford said.

“We lost several outstand-ing players to graduation,

so we have to flop some players around.”

Gone from last’s year line-up are Shrine Bowl safety Jahnari Devoe, North-South All-Star defensive tackle De-vontay Moore, All-Region

quarterback Solomon Mc-Cormick and 1,000 yard rusher Jamaree Hartzog.

This season, Ford will have to look for younger players to step up as he tries to replace six starters from last season.

“We’ve had a good off season program and some of our younger players have re-ally developed,” said Ford.

“We’ve looked pretty good in scrimmages. Hopefully that success can continue into the season.”

If the first two scrimmages are any indication, the Tigers shouldn’t miss a beat at quarterback with sophomore Will Ward at the helm.

Ward shined in opening scrimmage against Willi-ston-Elko High, passing for more than 150 yards and two

touchdowns. His blend of athleticism and arm strength will give the Tigers plenty of options at the position.

The backfield is again solid with returner Brandon Jordan leading the way.

Jordan is a shifty and pow-erful runner, who has the knack for pulling away from defenders in the open field.

Last season, he ran for 1,133 yards, including a 167 yard outing Aug. 24 against Wade Hampton High.

Joining Jordan in the back-field will be Kenneth Smith and Richard Garvin.

Last season, the Tigers got a good performance from their offensive line as they paved the way for two 1,000 yard rushers. Look for that kind of productivity to continue this season with

four starters returning. Michael Taylor, an All-

Region candidate, has loads of potential because of an excellent frame and long arms. He plays to the whis-tle and rarely gets beat by a defender coming off the cor-ner. On the opposite side, the Tigers will have Deon Priester at right tackle.
