Fighting Falcons

Fairmont State’s volleyball team en-tered the 2010 season picked to fin-ish near the bottom of the league, but the Falcons surprised the pundits by compiling a 12-2 record that put them squarely in second place in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Confer-ence (WVIAC).

Now, the Falcons can no longer sneak up on the competition. The Fal-cons got a good taste of winning last year, and the desire to stay at the top of the league is as strong as it was to stay out of the bottom of it. Things won’t be easy, though, FSU did lose three start-ers, including two players who earned first team All-WVIAC honors last sea-son, but the Falcons still return plenty of talent and a winning attitude that have the team headed in the right direction.

Head coach Larry Hill, who is the ninth winningest active coach in NCAA Division II, has just two seniors on the squad in setter Jess Seevers and libero Morgan Walls. Seevers has played in a variety of different spots for the Falcons during her career, but finally has found a spot as the team’s setter. She had a career-best 619 assists last year (5.5 per game). Seevers will be counted on to direct the team’s offense in addition to her leadership role as a team captain.

Walls, the other captain, has been spectacular defensively since her arrival in Fairmont, and the FSU record book will likely reflect that before her career is over. Heading into this season, Walls has 1,552 career digs and will likely sur-pass the school record for that category early in the season. Walls has the ability to keep play alive and get the FSU of-fense started.

The Falcons return a pair of strong hitters in sophomores Bri Swann and Amber Wilson, who each saw signifi-cant action a season ago. Swann was third on the team in kills with 223, and Wilson contributed 198. Swann led the team in service aces with 35, while Wil-son was also particularly strong at the net coming up with 75 total blocks,

which ranked second on the team. Fairmont State coach Larry Hill will

also look to other sophomores to step in on a more regular basis in 2011. Les-lie Giordon played in 29 matches and Kelley Canale played in 20 last year, but each will be counted on for a bigger contribution here in the upcoming sea-son. Sophomore middle hitter Alli Ber-tozzi and sophomore defensive special-ist Katherine Herrera will look to impact the team’s rotation as well.

In addition to that core of players, Fairmont State brought in several tal-ented newcomers who look to have an impact right away in 2011. Kara Crabill has an imposing presence in the middle and will try to help fill the void left by the team’s top blocker, Theresa Zapach.

Season PreviewTiff Smathers is a strong back row play-er, and Tabbie Bias will be the back-up setter to Seevers.

The Falcons have put together a schedule that will test them in non-conference action to prepare them for the grind of the WVIAC. The Falcons will once again host their annual tour-nament with nine teams coming to Fal-con Fest this year. FSU will then take on several schools from the PSAC at the Ram Rumble Tournament hosted by Shepherd. Another tournament awaits the Falcons at Davis & Elkins before Fairmont State starts the heart of its conference schedule. FSU will try to win its first conference tournament champi-onship since 1999 in early November at the WVIAC Tournament in Charleston.

Fighting Falcons

one of the most successful and consistent coaches in volleyball, head coach larry Hill begins his 28th season at the helm of the fairmont State volleyball program. He ranks ninth in ncaa division ii for victories among active head coaches with a mark of 559-446 – more than any other coach in the wviac. the falcons have had 18 winning times under Hill’s leadership.

coach Hill has led the fairmont State program since 1984, and has been named wviac “coach of the year” four times (1985, 1988, 1990 and 1998), and has led the fighting falcons to a winning season 17 times. coach Hill has also directed fairmont State to at least 20 victories in 15 seasons, including a record 42 wins in 1990. He has guided the fighting falcons to four wviac titles (1998, 1990, 1998 and 1999), and has produced three conference “Players of the year” in Jackie Burks (1988), tracey rowe (1989) and courtney fochtman (1994). fochtman and theresa Haggerty are members of the fairmont State athletic Hall of fame.

last season, the falcons notched their 16th, 20-win season under Hill after posting a 20-10 record and a runner-up finish in the wviac. the falcons also had a pair of first team all-wviac honorees.

two seasons ago, the falcons fell just one victory short of a 20-win season finishing with a 19-16 mark. Hill coached second team selection Micah Bell, and helped develop Meagan Gibson into one of the more dominant players in the league as she led the wviac in kills and kills per game.

in 2008, the falcons won 13 matches, and Micah Bell was named to the all-wviac second team. in 2007, Hill won his 500th career match on Sept. 26, 2007, against ohio valley. in 2005, Hill led fairmont State to its 16th winning season with a 20-19 record and the team posted an impressive 14-4 record inside the wviac and advanced to the semifinals of

the league tournament. He helped Skinner earn first team all-wviac honors.

in 1998, Hill was selected as the atlantic region ncaa ii “coach of the year.” that season, the falcons finished first in the region with a 23-1 record and hosted the regional tournament. another career milestone came on Sept. 12, 2000, as he garnered his 400th career win against Glenville.

Prior to Hill’s becoming the volleyball coach at fairmont, he was as assistant football coach for 13 seasons with the falcons. Born in weston, w.va., Hill attended east fairmont High School, where he participated in football and track and was named all-Big ten and all-Marion county for his play.

Hill then took his athletic talents to fairmont State, where he was a four-year letterman

in football and was named all-wviac as a linebacker helping the falcons to three, one-loss seasons during his career. He went on to serve on the coaching staff of the 1967 national championship team at fairmont State. Hill received his master’s degree from west virginia University in 1968. for the next two years Hill served in the United States army.

He returned to fairmont State in the fall of 1970, and has been a coach and professor in the division of HHP since that time. Hill also served as the head baseball coach for four years (1980-1983) and enjoyed a tremendous season in 1982 directing a team that went 21-13 (15-3 wviac) and won the northern division championship of the wviac.

Hill is married to the former Joyce lynn antolini.

after a successful career for the falcons, theresa Zapach has joined the fairmont State coaching staff.

Zapach was a first team all-wviac selection in her senior season with the falcons after ranking among the league leaders in total blocks last season with 138. She was a regular starter in the middle for fSU as a junior and led the team with 97 blocks while adding 162 kills.

a fairmont, w.va., native, Zapach starred at east fairmont High School. She was a two-time all-ncac player for the Bees and earned all-state honorable mention as a senior after posting 237 kills and 69 blocks. She also was a standout in basketball earning all-state honorable mention honors during her senior season after helping lead east fairmont to just its second state tournament appearance in school history.

Fighting Falcons

as a Marion county native and a fairmont State graduate, no one embodies the passion of falcon athletics like rusty elliott. elliott, who has been associated with fairmont State for nearly three decades, was named athletic director in august of 2007.

last season, fairmont State continued its excellence both on and off the field. once again, fSU boasted the highest grade-point average among student-athletes in the state of west virginia at a staggering 76 percent. in addition, fairmont State’s fundraising and sponsorship dollars have continued to grow in support of increased scholarship dollars for athletics. in the Spring of 2011, elliott traveled to indianapolis to accept an award for the best community engagement initiative in the country for the school’s “Put your Best fairmont forward” idea that helped attract nearly 6,000 fans for fairmont State’s nationally televised game against west liberty and helped collect books and canned food for the community.

in 2009-10, three fairmont State teams advanced to ncaa championships in historic fashion. the men’s and women’s basketball teams made it to the ncaa tournament in the same year for the first time in school history, and the softball team earned its first-ever ncaa tournament bid. in addition to the on-field accomplishments, the ncaa released its graduation rate in January 2010 and fairmont State’s student-athletes boasted the top graduation rate of any school in the state of west virginia. in the spring of 2010, the fSU athletic department was recognized as the wviac winner in the ncaa division ii’s community engagement initiative.

in 2008, elliott oversaw an athletic department that saw fairmont State finish third in the wviac President’s cup. the men’s golf team once again captured a wviac title and advanced to the ncaa championships, the men’s basketball team recorded 20 wins, the softball team set a school record for conference victories and finished runner-up in the league and the baseball team captured the wviac central division championship. in addition to the athletic successes, fairmont State student-athletes had

Rustyelliott

athletic director

Athletic directorunprecedented success in the classroom as the cumulative GPa for all student-athletes was 2.99. He also oversaw major improvements to the basketball arena with the installation of a state-of-the-art scoreboard and renovations to the feaster center as fairmont State continues its commitment to a superior student-athlete experience.

in his first year as athletic director, fairmont State won a pair of conference championships in women’s basketball and men’s golf, with each of those teams advancing to the ncaa tournament. the football team, playing its first season on a brand-new playing surface, finished with a winning record and the men’s basketball team finished with 19 victories.

elliott guided the football program for five years before accepting the athletic director’s position. in his last season as head football coach he landed six players on the all-wviac first team – tied for most in the league. the falcons closed the season strong down the stretch, winning three of their last four. in his five seasons, elliott’s players earned first team all-conference honors 29 times.

elliott spent 15 seasons as an assistant coach for the falcons from 1986-2000, spanning the tenures of wally Hood and doug Sams. in his first two seasons, he served as the wide receivers coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 1988. that season, the falcons were the west virginia intercollegiate athletic conference (wviac) champions and advanced to the national association of intercollegiate athletics (naia) playoffs. He remained offensive coordinator for the next four seasons.

from 1994-2000, elliott coordinated the falcons’ defensive and recruiting efforts under Sams. the falcons won two wviac championships (1996 and 2000) during those seven years. the falcons were conference runners-up in 1986, 1987 and 2005.

elliott served as the skill development coach for rich rodriguez at west virginia University during the 2001 football season before taking over the helm of the fairmont State program in the spring of 2002.

“this is home and this is definitely the place i want to be,” elliott says. “i want to be part of the development of this school, this community and this county. that’s a big part of my life, and i want to make this athletic program and this school a really positive thing for the community.”

elliott also served as a temporary instructor in the School of Health and Human Performance and had done so for 11 years at fairmont State. elliott received his bachelor’s degree from fairmont State in 1979 and obtained his master’s degree from wvU in 1988.

He taught and was an assistant football

coach at north Marion High School from 1980 until 1985. He served under head coach roy Michael at north Marion. the Huskies posted a 57-13 record and won the state championship in 1980 and 1981. north Marion finished as the state runner-up in 1982. from 1981-86, elliott was the head wrestling coach at north Marion. His teams posted a record of 73-26 and won five state championships.

He is married to the former Mary Jo thorne, and they are the parents of two daughters, devan (16), and addie, (6), and two sons, ryan (14), and Kyle (11).
