ADC Security Survey Global Key Findings

description

F5 designed the 2011 ADC Security Survey to explore this issue. Specifically, the survey explores: • Threats - What are the hardest threats IT currently has to defend against? • Effects - what is the effect of this new breed of threat on global organizations? • Safeguards - How are traditional safeguards, such as firewalls, faring against the new threats? • ADC Security - How does IT feel about using ADCs to augment traditional safeguards?

• 1,000 organizations (100/country)

• Senior IT management

• Respondents with role >50% in:• Network infrastructure (one fifth)

• Endpoints (one fifth)

• Applications (one fifth)

• Security (not compliance related) (one fifth)

• System administration (one fifth)

• APAC• Australia (2,000+ employees)

• Hong Kong (2,000+ employees)

• India (2,000+ employees)

• China (2,000+ employees)

Attacks Getting More Difficult to Defend

• Most frequent are most difficult to defend AND highest impact:

The ‘cyber attack index’ is comprised of frequency, difficulty to protect against, and impact on organization, as reported by the respondents

Attacks Driving High Costs to Organizations

• 100% of organizations saw losses from cyber attacks

• Typical cost: $682,000 in past 12 months

Traditional Safeguards Falling Short

• 42% had a firewall fail due to network-layer DoS traffic load

• 36% had a firewall fail due to app-layer DoS traffic load

• 38% say safeguards understand traffic context less than ‘somewhat well’

• 36% say safeguards protect against complex, blended threats less than ‘somewhat well’

• 53% say network performance impact from safeguard ‘somewhat’ to ‘extremely challenging’

IT Sees Role for ADCs for Security

• Only 1 in 12 say traditional safeguards suffice

• Half say ADCs can replace many or most traditional safeguards

• 92% see specific roles

Adopting of ADCs for Security is Growing

• One third to one half are already using ADCs for security

• Nearly 100% are discussing

Recommendations

• Build a unified framework

• Make sure your safeguards understand context

• Employ safeguards that are extensible and adaptable

• Lean on your peers

• Make sure your security infrastructure can scale
