BACKGROUND

At the SIANI Annual Meeting, engaging more youth in the network came up as a main priority for 2015.

During the spring of 2015, a study has been done to understand how SIANI can increase its youth focus.

Main methods have been a digital survey and a few in-depth interviews.

INSIGHTS 1• Youth are very interested in the issues SIANI focus on,

but they don’t know that SIANI exists • There is an interest to connect agro-food discussions

to more everyday life aspects, like sustainable food consumption. How to consume in order to promote sustainable food systems?

• Also an interest to connect more to practical farming skills, urban agriculture, alternative markets etcetera.

• Many of issues relation to agro-food and development are interrelated, should be considered in a more holistic way.

INSIGHTS 2• Many are interested in engaging in agriculture

themselves, but there are many challenges in the way, which should be highlighted and discussed more.

• Swedish youth want discussions on agricultural transformation in developing countries to include Swedish agriculture as well, since there are similar challenges and solutions.

• Many would like to have a SIANI Facebook page (there is one already, though!)

• There are many other networks & organisations that focus on similar things, such as YPARD. Important to connect with them!

RECOMMENDATIONS 1• Identify main youth target group – such as university

students or young professionals (high school students = beyond SIANI’s scope)

• Improve reach-out through social media, for example on Facebook – evaluate how to get more engagement.

• More website content related to youth and the topics they find interesting. Post internship and job opportunities.

• Increase presence on various fairs and events, such as having a table at student fairs

• Market events with posters at SLU and other universities

RECOMMENDATIONS 2• Organize more activities at universities, especially SLU,

preferably in collaboration with the student unions. • Organize events that are more practical, such as field

trips and workshops. • Include perspectives from Swedish agriculture and

consumption patterns when discussing agriculture and development.

• Connect with key organizations and ask them to spread the word about SIANI activities in their networks.

• Organise events in collaboration with these key organisations.

RECOMMENDATIONS 3• Organize events with youth coming back from Minor Field

Studies (MFS) or SIDA-financed internships as speakers. • Organize informal hang-outs together with youth,

marketed mainly through social media to gather more ideas on activities.

• Make sure to include students as a target group when writing invitations for conferences and seminars, not just professionals and experts.

• Have more youth representation in presentations and panels for all seminars and activities. Consult student unions and alumni networks to find suitable representatives for different topics.
