From the Head of School

What powerful words! They introduce the Creeds of the Chris-tian Church and are implicit in the founding documents of our nation. They were used to underscore the platforms and poli-cies of both parties in the recent election. Closer to home at St. Pius X High School, what do we believe?

We began asking that question earlier this year of our parents and students, our alumni, our faculty and staff. Their answers provided us with seven core values which reflect our mission and what we believe. At St. Pius X High School, we believe

• In practicing what you preach• In embracing diversity as a beautiful thing• In recognizing that every student has a special gift• In ensuring our School should feel like home• In preparing our students for the rigors of college life• In a caring and supportive learning environment• In challenging our students to realize their full potential

These core values are also realized in the goals of our Set the World Ablaze campaign: to create 21st century learning envi-ronments for our students; to provide teaching environments to continue to attract highly qualified, talented faculty; and to maintain our commitment to diversity. It was with great satis-faction that as we opened school in the fall of 2011, we also completed Phase 1 of the Set the World Ablaze campaign.

The Paul A. Gilliam ’98 Learning Center officially opened, with 137 students enrolled in the fourth year of the formal Learn-ing for Success program. The physical space for the Learning Center was expanded from 700 square feet into 5,500 square feet, with classrooms, learning labs, testing rooms, and admin-istrative space specifically dedicated to the program. Other elements of Phase 1 included infrastructure upgrades such as wireless access throughout the campus, improved climate control, and the addition of an elevator. New classrooms were constructed, new administrative offices and a conference room

added, and restrooms were remodeled throughout the build-ing. After a brief pause to dedicate the new facilities on October 7 and celebrate their completion, the focus of the campaign turned to Phase 2, the construction of the new Science Build-ing and the West Campus expansion. At the end of this fiscal year, over $6 million had been raised toward our goal of $12 million.

We believe that our vision for St. Pius X High School — 21st century learning and teaching environments, of welcoming and supporting diversity in all its manifestations, of teaching truth and preaching justice—is one that will continue to define our School as unique within the private school community of Houston. We are grateful to all those benefactors who have partnered with us in the last year to make this vision a reality and we are thankful for the opportunity to recognize them in this Annual Roll of Donors.

As has been its practice since 1956, St. Pius X High School continues to provide an outstanding high school experience for our students. Strong academic programs, competitive ath-letics, and award-winning fine arts, built on the foundation of the Dominican charism, help to define a St. Pius X education. My two children, Kelly ’06 and Kyle ’08 greatly benefitted from their time at St. Pius X and were well prepared to take on the challenges of college life and years beyond.

Enrollment continued to be strong with approximately 665 students on campus at SPX in 2011-12. This, along with con-tinued growth in the SPX Fund and support from the St. Pius X High School Foundation, allowed us to provide some form of financial aid to nearly 30% of our student population. The Board emphasizes the need for a strong financial aid program and is proud that the School was able to increase its tuition assistance grants by 30% from the previous fiscal year, to nearly $675,000.

Our commitment to meeting the needs of our community was also apparent as we completed Phase 1 of the Set the World Ablaze campaign. Our first steps in addressing the future needs of the school included the expansion and dedication of the Paul A. Gilliam ’98 Learning Center, building additional classroom space, completing much need improvements to our infrastructure through the installation of an elevator and the first phase of a chiller system, along with upgrades to our technology.

As I reflect on the changes to the campus over the past 10 years, I am proud of what the St. Pius X community has ac-complished. However, our work is not done. Please join me in supporting the Set the World Ablaze campaign to ensure the School’s success for generations to come.

The Board’s role is to ensure the School is on sound financial footing and well positioned for future success. As I complete my term as your Board Chair and turn over the gavel to the very capable Terrie Sechrist, I am confident the School will continue to progress towards fulfilling its mission to help young men and women to embrace academic excellence and integrity, celebrate the community’s diverse gifts and heritage and embrace social justice and service.

Publishing the Roll of Donors each year is a small way in which St. Pius X High School can publicly recognize those who have made financial gifts to the School. Gifts included in this list are those made from August 1, 2011, through July 31, 2012. Every year, the list of benefactors grows with new friends who join the dedi-cated and consistent donors who have supported St. Pius X for many years. Each of these gifts is needed and appreciated.
